• How to distribute a unique database already in production?

  Let's assume a successful web spring application running on a MySql or PostGre kind of database. The traffic is becoming so high and the amount of data is becoming so big that a distributed dataase solution needs to be implemented. It is a scalability issue. Let's assume this application is using Hibernate and the data access layer is cleanly separated with DAO objects. What would be the best strategy to scale this database? Does anyone have hands on experience to share? Is it possible to minimize sharding code (Shard) in the application? Ideally, one should be able to add or remove databases easily. A failback solution is welcome too. I am not looking for you could go for sharding or you could go no sql kind of answers. I am looking for deeper answers from people with experience.

• Adsense ads are not a good fit for my site

  I run an academic network for college students to communicate at particular universities and we run Google Adsense. The site pulls in a decent amount for a side project but our CTR is horrible <0.2% and our RPM is equally low. The problem lies in the fact that Google pegs us as an education site (which we are) but shows our users ads for U of Phoenix, Devry U and other for-profit universities. All of our users are students of the more higher-caliber institutions and therefore have no use for these ads. I've known about this problem for some time but I don't know what to do to show more relevant ads instead (i.e. Spring Break, school apparel, poker, sports, etc). What would be the best way to change this?

• Tales from the Coal Face - Speeding up a C# compilation

  At one place, I was faced with a C# solution which when XML documentation was turned on, the compilation time increased from 45 seconds to over 8 minutes. This slowdown was unacceptable, however some digging revealed an excellent suggestion by Eric Woodruff at http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/devdocs/thread/9bbad4cc-e229-49da-a6f7-3cdf470ac53a/ where he suggested "just suppress the warning by entering it's number (1591 for C#) in the Suppress Warnings field on the Build tab of the project properties". I followed Eric's suggestion and the compilation time went back down to 45 seconds. Now that CS1591 is suppressed how was missing documentation to be found? All that was necessary was to run StyleCop!

• How do I completly remove software? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Why are the hidden settings-folders not deleted when purging an application? Ok I have 8GB on my desktop dual booting win 7. I installed a few games, assualtcube, tremolous, and spring. But I had removed them using 'remove --purge' and only to find they are still lingering and purge does not well truly purge them. I need them completely gone and not secretly hogging space when I purged them. How can i completely remove software, like it is gone and not going to take any more of my precious space? Shrinking 7 and growing Ubuntu is not an answer I am accepting, i want to know how to completely remove software. Thank you for your time and your answers.

• GA tracking utm query params after hashbang

  We currently use a hashbang for the portion of our site that generates dynamic content which can also be deep linked. Our analytics team wants to use utm params to track the referral traffic from social networks. We are using Universal Analytics (analytics.js) as well as GTM. Will GA pick up the query parameters after the hashbang or does it always have to go before? For example: example.com/#!/some/content?utm_source=foo&utm_campaign=bar example.com?utm_source=foo&utm_campaign=bar/#!/some/content In #1, I'm concerned that the utm params won't be recorded and in #2 the page will break or the url could be incorrectly written. How does GA pull in those parameters - location.search? regex? Can I get away with using either?

I have IT and developer FTE resources available to me but I am trying to build a list of branding, project, and functionality points to review. What guides or lists can/should I use to evaluate this website before I begin adding features, creating new projects, or even redesigning and redeveloping the site? (I have been a webmaster/designer/developer for small, WordPress/Drupal sites for 10 years. I have been an unofficial webmaster (director/content manager) for a large site for 3 years (no direct development control over Sharepoint administration, IIS, or hosting ... but everything else, I did.   Recently I have been having a lot of fun building a competition Slice of Kevin intended in part to teach people about Web Slices in New Zealand. The competition has been very successful and has created a loyal group of users. Since launch 2 months ago we have had 26,843 users of the slice. Each of those users have spent on average 4.1 hrs each engaged inside the web slice over that time. We also reached out through social media and found that facebook worked as a perfect companion to the Web Slice...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Consultant in a firm that doesn't understand the tech!

  I got the job as a Consultant in a firm that has 3 other programmers. My job is to rewrite all the old system in Java, Spring etc but the staff programmers only know perl and the manager does not know any programming. I am trying to get them to understand that I have 6 projects to rewrite here but no one has design docs or spec. the staff programmers never had to write any documents. Plus I cant get the manager to understand the new java tech stuff.. he keeps asking some of the staff for views on things but the staff don't know it or understand it. Where do I go from here to make the manager understand that the staff programmers or someone has to write a design document so I know what to build. or if I have to write the documents how do I get the information?

  I was thinking about developing a small community website where people of a certain profession can register and post their own blogs (Which includes an optional photo). I then got to thinking about how people might use this and the fact that if they are given the option to add a photo, they might be likely to use one that they simply find on Google, another social network or even an existing online blog/magazine article. So how do I cover myself from getting a fine slapped on me and to make it purely the fault of the individual uploader? I plan on having an option where the user can credit a photo by typing in the original photographers name & web link (optional) and to make them tick a check box stating that the post is their own content and that they have permission to use any images but is that enough to cover myself? How do other sites do it?

For this period I have been working on my project- some sort of business network - and I did few small jobs, so right now I feel I am far behind in terms of my skills and the skills needed today. I lingered too long on Struts and Hibernate and thought that could the job for my project. I need to get a job, right now, so I am spending most of my time brushing my skills. • Web App vs Portal Platform - convincing the customer

  We're evaluating a set of requirements for a customer who wants Liferay which mainly has AAA and Web CMS requirements, and allowing user to upload their own content. Also all inetgration is via web services. However there is no need for other features such as actual "portlets", i18n, mashups, skins, themes, tagging, social presence, no collaboration etc So we feel we can do this as a standard JEE web app and not use Liferay (or any other portal product) since these are overheads we dont need. The customer feels the Web CMS requirements + user upload justify the "portal" product. Can anyone help me with some points to convince the customer? Assuming our point of view is right.

  I want to run a browser-based social media (Twitter, Instagram,...) account management tool (justunfollow.com) which monetizes through ads. But many affiliate networks like Google AdSense or media.net require your website to have "high quality content". AdSense explicitly states: "Google ads, search boxes or search results may not be: * Integrated into a software application (does not apply to AdMob) of any kind, including toolbars. * Placed on any non-content-based page. (Does not apply to AdSense for search, mobile AdSense for search, or AdMob.)" Are there serious & trustworthy affiliate networks which allow ads to be published on a web application?

In it, we see (in the words of the immortal Richard Dawson, RIP) "Surveys Says!": Java computer programming language is on top.
