• Perl: Value of response code in HTTP::Request

- by lola
Hi all, So, I am writing a code to get a document from the internet. The document size is around 200 KB. This is the code: !/usr/local/bin/perl -w use strict; use LWP::UserAgent; my $ua = LWP::UserAgent->new; my $url = "SOME URL"; my $req = HTTP::Request->new(GET => $url); my $res = $ua->request($req); if($res->is_success){ print $res->content ."\n"; } else{ print "Error: " . $res->status_line; } Now, the only problem is I can't mention what the URL is. However, the output is: "Error: 500 read timeout". When I checked the link externally, the data is being downloaded in under 5 seconds. I even changed the timeout to 1000s, but it still didn't work. How should I go about finding more information related to the response. The size of the file (around 200KB) is also not too great to warrant a read timeout. The server is also not a busy one, didn't give a problem whenever I checked the link on the browser. Thanks.

• Is there a Form.Invoke() method?

- by rubicon
Hi, I am new to multithreading (and also to C#) so I hope this is not obvious: In my Form (WinForms application, .NET 2.0) I subscribed to an event that is raised by another object, and on handling this event I wish to change several Controls on my Form. As this event is raised in another thread than the main (UI) thread I want to marshal the call to the Form's thread. I understand I could use the Control.Invoke() method on any Control that I want to change, but as there are several of them I do not wish to do that. When searching the internet I found hints that the Form class itself provides an Invoke() method. See for example: http://marioschneider.blogspot.com/2008/04/invoke-methode-fr-multithread.html (Sorry, as I am I new user I can't seem to post more than one link. I will add more links as comments if possible.) With that, I could just wrap my event handler and then use it as if it was called on the UI thread. However, this doesn't seem to be defined in my environment, and in MSDN's System.Windows.Forms.Form documentation there's also no sign of it. Does this method exist in the .NET-Framework? I find it hard to believe that Form would not supply such a method, as it uses the same message queue the Controls on it do. (Or am I missing something here?)

• VB.NET Program Locks Up with Internet Explorer Opened

- by aaronsj
I'm using Visual Studio 2008 and developing a VB.NET application. I'm having strange lockup problems with my program, but only when Internet explorer 8 is opened. When I cover my form with another window and then uncover it, I find that it has locked up. My program has no references to IE and the only thing it even has to do with IE is using Process.Start with a web address. My program works fine and exactly as it should, but only when IE is not opened. Does anyone know why a program would lock up only while IE is running? Edit: I've done some digging and I've found the offending thread in my program. I don't know what starts this thread or what it does, but when I kill it, my program no longer freezes. The thread is one of the CreateApplicationContext threads, here is the last few items in the stack trace of that thread. 6 ntkrnlpa.exe+0x897bc 7 ntdll.dll!KiFastSystemCallRet 8 mscorwrks.dll!LogHelp_TerminateOnAssert+0x61 9 mscorwrks.dll!DllUnregisterServerInternal+0x10523 10 mscorwrks.dll!DllUnregisterServerInternal+0x10542 11 mscorwrks.dll!StrongNameErrorInfo+0x34387 12 mscorwrks.dll!StrongNameErrorInfo+0x34815 13 mscorwrks.dll!CreateApplicationContext+0xbc35 14 KERNEL32.dll!GetModuleHandleA+0xdf Process explorer says my program is using no CPU nor throwing any exceptions while it is hung.

• AJAX Uploading - Not waiting for response before continuing

- by waxical
I'm using Blueimp's jQuery Uploader (very good it is too btw) and an S3 handler to upload files and then transfer them to S3 via the S3 API (from the PHP SDK). It works. The problem is, on large files (1GB) it can take anything up to a a few minutes to transfer (via create-object) onto S3. The PHP file that does this is hung-up until this process is complete. The problem is, the uploader (which utilises the jQuery Ajax method) seems to give up waiting and start again everytime. I have thought this was related to PHP INI 'max_input_time' or such, as it seemed to wait around 60 seconds, though this now appears to vary. I have upped the max_input_time in PHP INI and others related - but no further. I've also considered (the more likely) that JS, either in the script or the jQuery method has a timeout. The developer (blueimp) has said there's no such timeout in the front-end script, nor have I seen any and though 'timeout' is referenced in the jQuery Ajax method options, it seems to affect the entire time it uploads rather than the wait for a response - so that's not much use. Any help or guidance gratefully received.

• Java: multi-threaded maps: how do the implementations compare?

- by user346629
I'm looking for a good hash map implementation. Specifically, one that's good for creating a large number of maps, most of them small. So memory is an issue. It should be thread-safe (though losing the odd put might be an OK compromise in return for better performance), and fast for both get and put. And I'd also like the moon on a stick, please, with a side-order of justice. The options I know are: HashMap. Disastrously un-thread safe. ConcurrentHashMap. My first choice, but this has a hefty memory footprint - about 2k per instance. Collections.sychronizedMap(HashMap). That's working OK for me, but I'm sure there must be faster alternatives. Trove or Colt - I think neither of these are thread-safe, but perhaps the code could be adapted to be thread safe. Any others? Any advice on what beats what when? Any really good new hash map algorithms that Java could use an implementation of? Thanks in advance for your input!

• Built in background-scheduling system in .NET?

- by Lasse V. Karlsen
I ask though I doubt there is any such system. Basically I need to schedule tasks to execute at some point in the future (usually no more than a few seconds or possibly minutes from now), and have some way of cancelling that request unless too late. Ie. code that would look like this: var x = Scheduler.Schedule(() => SomethingSomething(), TimeSpan.FromSeconds(5)); ... x.Dispose(); // cancels the request Is there any such system in .NET? Is there anything in TPL that can help me? I need to run such future-actions from various instances in a system here, and would rather avoid each such class instance to have its own thread and deal with this. Also note that I don't want this (or similar, for instance through Tasks): new Thread(new ThreadStart(() => { Thread.Sleep(5000); SomethingSomething(); })).Start(); There will potentially be a few such tasks to execute, they don't need to be executed in any particular order, except for close to their deadline, and it isn't vital that they have anything like a realtime performance concept. I just want to avoid spinning up a separate thread for each such action.

• How to delay program for a certain number of milliseconds, or until a key is pressed?

- by Jack
I need to delay my program's execution for a specified number of milliseconds, but also want the user to be able to escape the wait when a key is pressed. If no key is pressed the program should wait for the specified number of milliseconds. I have been using Thread.Sleep to halt the program (which in the context of my program I think is ok as the UI is set to minimise during the execution of the main method). I have thought about doing something like this: while(GetAsyncKeyState(System.Windows.Forms.Keys.Escape) == 0 || waitTime > totalWait) { Thread.Sleep(100); waitTime += 100; } As Thread.Sleep will wait until at least the time specified before waking the thread up, there will obviously be a large unwanted extra delay as it is scaled up in the while loop. Is there some sort of method that will sleep for a specified amount of time but only while a condition holds true? Or is the above example above the "correct" way to do it but to use a more accurate Sleep method? If so what method can I use? Thanks in advance for your help.

• Parallel features in .Net 4.0

- by Jonathan.Peppers
I have been going over the practicality of some of the new parallel features in .Net 4.0. Say I have code like so: foreach (var item in myEnumerable) myDatabase.Insert(item.ConvertToDatabase()); Imagine myDatabase.Insert is performing some work to insert to a SQL database. Theoretically you could write: Parallel.ForEach(myEnumerable, item => myDatabase.Insert(item.ConvertToDatabase())); And automatically you get code that takes advantage of multiple cores. But what if myEnumerable can only be interacted with by a single thread? Will the Parallel class enumerate by a single thread and only dispatch the result to worker threads in the loop? What if myDatabase can only be interacted with by a single thread? It would certainly not be better to make a database connection per iteration of the loop. Finally, what if my "var item" happens to be a UserControl or something that must be interacted with on the UI thread? What design pattern should I follow to solve these problems? It's looking to me that switching over to Parallel/PLinq/etc is not exactly easy when you are dealing with real-world applications.

• C#: System.Collections.Concurrent.ConcurrentQueue vs. Queue

- by James Michael Hare
I love new toys, so of course when .NET 4.0 came out I felt like the proverbial kid in the candy store! Now, some people get all excited about the IDE and it’s new features or about changes to WPF and Silver Light and yes, those are all very fine and grand. But me, I get all excited about things that tend to affect my life on the backside of development. That’s why when I heard there were going to be concurrent container implementations in the latest version of .NET I was salivating like Pavlov’s dog at the dinner bell. They seem so simple, really, that one could easily overlook them. Essentially they are implementations of containers (many that mirror the generic collections, others are new) that have either been optimized with very efficient, limited, or no locking but are still completely thread safe -- and I just had to see what kind of an improvement that would translate into. Since part of my job as a solutions architect here where I work is to help design, develop, and maintain the systems that process tons of requests each second, the thought of extremely efficient thread-safe containers was extremely appealing. Of course, they also rolled out a whole parallel development framework which I won’t get into in this post but will cover bits and pieces of as time goes by. This time, I was mainly curious as to how well these new concurrent containers would perform compared to areas in our code where we manually synchronize them using lock or some other mechanism. So I set about to run a processing test with a series of producers and consumers that would be either processing a traditional System.Collections.Generic.Queue or a System.Collection.Concurrent.ConcurrentQueue. Now, I wanted to keep the code as common as possible to make sure that the only variance was the container, so I created a test Producer and a test Consumer. The test Producer takes an Action<string> delegate which is responsible for taking a string and placing it on whichever queue we’re testing in a thread-safe manner: 1: internal class Producer 2: { 3: public int Iterations { get; set; } 4: public Action<string> ProduceDelegate { get; set; } 5: 6: public void Produce() 7: { 8: for (int i = 0; i < Iterations; i++) 9: { 10: ProduceDelegate(“Hello”); 11: } 12: } 13: } Then likewise, I created a consumer that took a Func<string> that would read from whichever queue we’re testing and return either the string if data exists or null if not. Then, if the item doesn’t exist, it will do a 10 ms wait before testing again. Once all the producers are done and join the main thread, a flag will be set in each of the consumers to tell them once the queue is empty they can shut down since no other data is coming: 1: internal class Consumer 2: { 3: public Func<string> ConsumeDelegate { get; set; } 4: public bool HaltWhenEmpty { get; set; } 5: 6: public void Consume() 7: { 8: bool processing = true; 9: 10: while (processing) 11: { 12: string result = ConsumeDelegate(); 13: 14: if(result == null) 15: { 16: if (HaltWhenEmpty) 17: { 18: processing = false; 19: } 20: else 21: { 22: Thread.Sleep(TimeSpan.FromMilliseconds(10)); 23: } 24: } 25: else 26: { 27: DoWork(); // do something non-trivial so consumers lag behind a bit 28: } 29: } 30: } 31: } Okay, now that we’ve done that, we can launch threads of varying numbers using lambdas for each different method of production/consumption. First let's look at the lambdas for a typical System.Collections.Generics.Queue with locking: 1: // lambda for putting to typical Queue with locking... 2: var productionDelegate = s => 3: { 4: lock (_mutex) 5: { 6: _mutexQueue.Enqueue(s); 7: } 8: }; 9: 10: // and lambda for typical getting from Queue with locking... 11: var consumptionDelegate = () => 12: { 13: lock (_mutex) 14: { 15: if (_mutexQueue.Count > 0) 16: { 17: return _mutexQueue.Dequeue(); 18: } 19: } 20: return null; 21: }; Nothing new or interesting here. Just typical locks on an internal object instance. Now let's look at using a ConcurrentQueue from the System.Collections.Concurrent library: 1: // lambda for putting to a ConcurrentQueue, notice it needs no locking! 2: var productionDelegate = s => 3: { 4: _concurrentQueue.Enqueue(s); 5: }; 6: 7: // lambda for getting from a ConcurrentQueue, once again, no locking required. 8: var consumptionDelegate = () => 9: { 10: string s; 11: return _concurrentQueue.TryDequeue(out s) ? s : null; 12: }; So I pass each of these lambdas and the number of producer and consumers threads to launch and take a look at the timing results. Basically I’m timing from the time all threads start and begin producing/consuming to the time that all threads rejoin. I won't bore you with the test code, basically it just launches code that creates the producers and consumers and launches them in their own threads, then waits for them all to rejoin. The following are the timings from the start of all threads to the Join() on all threads completing. The producers create 10,000,000 items evenly between themselves and then when all producers are done they trigger the consumers to stop once the queue is empty. These are the results in milliseconds from the ordinary Queue with locking: 1: Consumers Producers 1 2 3 Time (ms) 2: ---------- ---------- ------ ------ ------ --------- 3: 1 1 4284 5153 4226 4554.33 4: 10 10 4044 3831 5010 4295.00 5: 100 100 5497 5378 5612 5495.67 6: 1000 1000 24234 25409 27160 25601.00 And the following are the results in milliseconds from the ConcurrentQueue with no locking necessary: 1: Consumers Producers 1 2 3 Time (ms) 2: ---------- ---------- ------ ------ ------ --------- 3: 1 1 3647 3643 3718 3669.33 4: 10 10 2311 2136 2142 2196.33 5: 100 100 2480 2416 2190 2362.00 6: 1000 1000 7289 6897 7061 7082.33 Note that even though obviously 2000 threads is quite extreme, the concurrent queue actually scales really well, whereas the traditional queue with simple locking scales much more poorly. I love the new concurrent collections, they look so much simpler without littering your code with the locking logic, and they perform much better. All in all, a great new toy to add to your arsenal of multi-threaded processing!

• Randomly displayed flashing lines, no response to all shortcuts, just power off. [syslog included]

- by B. Roland
Hello! I have an old machine, and I want to use for that to learn employees how to use Ubuntu, and to be easyer to switch from Windows. I've been installed 10.04, and updated, but this strange stuff is happend. Graphical installion failed, same strange thing. With alternate workd. Sometimes, when I boot up, a boot message displayed: Keyboard failure..., often diplayed after reboot, and after shutdown, when I haven't plugged off from AC. I replaced the keyboard yet, same failure... If I powered off, and plugged off from AC, no keyboard problems displayed in boot time. Details Configuration: Dell OptiPlex GX60 - in original cover, no changes. 256 MB DDR 166 MHz Intel® Celeron® Processor 2.40 GHz Dell 0C3207 Base Board I know, that is not enough, but I have three other Nec compuers, with nearly similar config, and they works well with 9.10, 10.04, 10.10. Live CDs I've been tried with 10.04 and 10.10, but the problem is displayed too. With 9.10 no strange things displayed, but it froze, during a simple apt-get install. Syslog An error loop is logged here, but I paste the whole startup and error lines. The flashing lines are displayed sometimes immediately after login, but sometimes after 10 minutes, but once occured, that nothing happend. Strange thing is displayed immediately after login: here. • tile_static, tile_barrier, and tiled matrix multiplication with C++ AMP

We ended the previous post with a mechanical transformation of the C++ AMP matrix multiplication example to the tiled model and in the process introduced tiled_index and tiled_grid. This is part 2. tile_static memory You all know that in regular CPU code, static variables have the same value regardless of which thread accesses the static variable. This is in contrast with non-static local variables, where each thread has its own copy. Back to C++ AMP, the same rules apply and each thread has its own value for local variables in your lambda, whereas all threads see the same global memory, which is the data they have access to via the array and array_view. In addition, on an accelerator like the GPU, there is a programmable cache, a third kind of memory type if you'd like to think of it that way (some call it shared memory, others call it scratchpad memory). Variables stored in that memory share the same value for every thread in the same tile. So, when you use the tiled model, you can have variables where each thread in the same tile sees the same value for that variable, that threads from other tiles do not. The new storage class for local variables introduced for this purpose is called tile_static. You can only use tile_static in restrict(direct3d) functions, and only when explicitly using the tiled model. What this looks like in code should be no surprise, but here is a snippet to confirm your mental image, using a good old regular C array // each tile of threads has its own copy of locA, // shared among the threads of the tile tile_static float locA[16][16]; Note that tile_static variables are scoped and have the lifetime of the tile, and they cannot have constructors or destructors. tile_barrier In amp.h one of the types introduced is tile_barrier. You cannot construct this object yourself (although if you had one, you could use a copy constructor to create another one). So how do you get one of these? You get it, from a tiled_index object. Beyond the 4 properties returning index objects, tiled_index has another property, barrier, that returns a tile_barrier object. The tile_barrier class exposes a single member, the method wait. 15: // Given a tiled_index object named t_idx 16: t_idx.barrier.wait(); 17: // more code …in the code above, all threads in the tile will reach line 16 before a single one progresses to line 17. Note that all threads must be able to reach the barrier, i.e. if you had branchy code in such a way which meant that there is a chance that not all threads could reach line 16, then the code above would be illegal. Tiled Matrix Multiplication Example – part 2 So now that we added to our understanding the concepts of tile_static and tile_barrier, let me obfuscate rewrite the matrix multiplication code so that it takes advantage of tiling. Before you start reading this, I suggest you get a cup of your favorite non-alcoholic beverage to enjoy while you try to fully understand the code. 01: void MatrixMultiplyTiled(vector<float>& vC, const vector<float>& vA, const vector<float>& vB, int M, int N, int W) 02: { 03: static const int TS = 16; 04: array_view<const float,2> a(M, W, vA); 05: array_view<const float,2> b(W, N, vB); 06: array_view<writeonly<float>,2> c(M,N,vC); 07: parallel_for_each(c.grid.tile< TS, TS >(), 08: [=] (tiled_index< TS, TS> t_idx) restrict(direct3d) 09: { 10: int row = t_idx.local[0]; int col = t_idx.local[1]; 11: float sum = 0.0f; 12: for (int i = 0; i < W; i += TS) { 13: tile_static float locA[TS][TS], locB[TS][TS]; 14: locA[row][col] = a(t_idx.global[0], col + i); 15: locB[row][col] = b(row + i, t_idx.global[1]); 16: t_idx.barrier.wait(); 17: for (int k = 0; k < TS; k++) 18: sum += locA[row][k] * locB[k][col]; 19: t_idx.barrier.wait(); 20: } 21: c[t_idx.global] = sum; 22: }); 23: } Notice that all the code up to line 9 is the same as per the changes we made in part 1 of tiling introduction. If you squint, the body of the lambda itself preserves the original algorithm on lines 10, 11, and 17, 18, and 21. The difference being that those lines use new indexing and the tile_static arrays; the tile_static arrays are declared and initialized on the brand new lines 13-15. On those lines we copy from the global memory represented by the array_view objects (a and b), to the tile_static vanilla arrays (locA and locB) – we are copying enough to fit a tile. Because in the code that follows on line 18 we expect the data for this tile to be in the tile_static storage, we need to synchronize the threads within each tile with a barrier, which we do on line 16 (to avoid accessing uninitialized memory on line 18). We also need to synchronize the threads within a tile on line 19, again to avoid the race between lines 14, 15 (retrieving the next set of data for each tile and overwriting the previous set) and line 18 (not being done processing the previous set of data). Luckily, as part of the awesome C++ AMP debugger in Visual Studio there is an option that helps you find such races, but that is a story for another blog post another time. May I suggest reading the next section, and then coming back to re-read and walk through this code with pen and paper to really grok what is going on, if you haven't already? Cool. Why would I introduce this tiling complexity into my code? Funny you should ask that, I was just about to tell you. There is only one reason we tiled our extent, had to deal with finding a good tile size, ensure the number of threads we schedule are correctly divisible with the tile size, had to use a tiled_index instead of a normal index, and had to understand tile_barrier and to figure out where we need to use it, and double the size of our lambda in terms of lines of code: the reason is to be able to use tile_static memory. Why do we want to use tile_static memory? Because accessing tile_static memory is around 10 times faster than accessing the global memory on an accelerator like the GPU, e.g. in the code above, if you can get 150GB/second accessing data from the array_view a, you can get 1500GB/second accessing the tile_static array locA. And since by definition you are dealing with really large data sets, the savings really pay off. We have seen tiled implementations being twice as fast as their non-tiled counterparts. Now, some algorithms will not have performance benefits from tiling (and in fact may deteriorate), e.g. algorithms that require you to go only once to global memory will not benefit from tiling, since with tiling you already have to fetch the data once from global memory! Other algorithms may benefit, but you may decide that you are happy with your code being 150 times faster than the serial-version you had, and you do not need to invest to make it 250 times faster. Also algorithms with more than 3 dimensions, which C++ AMP supports in the non-tiled model, cannot be tiled. Also note that in future releases, we may invest in making the non-tiled model, which already uses tiling under the covers, go the extra step and use tile_static memory on your behalf, but it is obviously way to early to commit to anything like that, and we certainly don't do any of that today. • obiee memory usage

- by user554629
Heap memory is a frequent customer topic. Here's the quick refresher, oriented towards AIX, but the principles apply to other unix implementations. 1. 32-bit processes have a maximum addressability of 4GB; usable application heap size of 2-3 GB. On AIX it is controlled by an environment variable: export LDR_CNTRL=....=MAXDATA=0x080000000 # 2GB ( The leading zero is deliberate, not required ) 1a. It is possible to get 3.25GB heap size for a 32-bit process using @DSA (Discontiguous Segment Allocation) export LDR_CNTRL=MAXDATA=0xd0000000@DSA # 3.25 GB 32-bit only One side-effect of using AIX segments "c" and "d" is that shared libraries will be loaded privately, and not shared. If you need the additional heap space, this is worth the trade-off. This option is frequently used for 32-bit java. 1b. 64-bit processes have no need for the @DSA option. 2. 64-bit processes can double the 32-bit heap size to 4GB using: export LDR_CNTRL=....=MAXDATA=0x100000000 # 1 with 8-zeros 2a. But this setting would place the same memory limitations on obiee as a 32-bit process 2b. The major benefit of 64-bit is to break the binds of 32-bit addressing. At a minimum, use 8GB export LDR_CNTRL=....=MAXDATA=0x200000000 # 2 with 8-zeros 2c. Many large customers are providing extra safety to their servers by using 16GB: export LDR_CNTRL=....=MAXDATA=0x400000000 # 4 with 8-zeros There is no performance penalty for providing virtual memory allocations larger than required by the application. - If the server only uses 2GB of space in 64-bit ... specifying 16GB just provides an upper bound cushion. When an unexpected user query causes a sudden memory surge, the extra memory keeps the server running. 3. The next benefit to 64-bit is that you can provide huge thread stack sizes for strange queries that might otherwise crash the server. nqsserver uses fast recursive algorithms to traverse complicated control structures. This means lots of thread space to hold the stack frames. 3a. Stack frames mostly contain register values; 64-bit registers are twice as large as 32-bit At a minimum you should quadruple the size of the server stack threads in NQSConfig.INI when migrating from 32- to 64-bit, to prevent a rogue query from crashing the server. Allocate more than is normally necessary for safety. 3b. There is no penalty for allocating more stack size than you need ... it is just virtual memory; no real resources are consumed until the extra space is needed. 3c. Increasing thread stack sizes may require the process heap size (MAXDATA) to be increased. Heap space is used for dynamic memory requests, and for thread stacks. No performance penalty to run with large heap and thread stack sizes. In a 32-bit world, this safety would require careful planning to avoid exceeding 2GM usable storage. 3d. Increasing the number of threads also may require additional heap storage. Most thread stack frames on obiee are allocated when the server is started, and the real memory usage increases as threads run work. Does 2.8GB sound like a lot of memory for an AIX application server? - I guess it is what you are accustomed to seeing from "grandpa's applications". - One of the primary design goals of obiee is to trade memory for services ( db, query caches, etc) - 2.8GB is still well under the 4GB heap size allocated with MAXDATA=0x100000000 - 2.8GB process size is also possible even on 32-bit Windows applications - It is not unusual to receive a sudden request for 30MB of contiguous storage on obiee.- This is not a memory leak; eventually the nqsserver storage will stabilize, but it may take days to do so. vmstat is the tool of choice to observe memory usage. On AIX vmstat will show something that may be startling to some people ... that available free memory ( the 2nd column ) is always trending toward zero ... no available free memory. Some customers have concluded that "nearly zero memory free" means it is time to upgrade the server with more real memory. After the upgrade, the server again shows very little free memory available. Should you be concerned about this? Many customers are !! Here is what is happening: - AIX filesystems are built on a paging model. If you read/write a filesystem block it is paged into memory ( no read/write system calls ) - This filesystem "page" has its own "backing store" on disk, the original filesystem block. When the system needs the real memory page holding the file block, there is no need to "page out". The page can be stolen immediately, because the original is still on disk in the filesystem. - The filesystem pages tend to collect ... every filesystem block that was ever seen since system boot is available in memory. If another application needs the file block, it is retrieved with no physical I/O. What happens if the system does need the memory ... to satisfy a 30MB heap request by nqsserver, for example? - Since the filesystem blocks have their own backing store ( not on a paging device ) the kernel can just steal any filesystem block ... on a least-recently-used basis to satisfy a new real memory request for "computation pages". No cause for alarm. vmstat is accurately displaying whether all filesystem blocks have been touched, and now reside in memory. Back to nqsserver: when should you be worried about its memory footprint? Answer: Almost never. Stop monitoring it ... stop fussing over it ... stop trying to optimize it. This is a production application, and nqsserver uses the memory it requires to accomplish the job, based on demand. C'mon ... never worry? I'm from New York ... worry is what we do best. Ok, here is the metric you should be watching, using vmstat: - Are you paging ... there are several columns of vmstat outputbash-2.04$ vmstat 3 3 System configuration: lcpu=4 mem=4096MB kthr memory page faults cpu ----- ------------ ------------------------ ------------ ----------- r b avm fre re pi po fr sr cy in sy cs us sy id wa 0 0 208492 2600 0 0 0 0 0 0 13 45 73 0 0 99 0 0 0 208492 2600 0 0 0 0 0 0 9 12 77 0 0 99 0 0 0 208492 2600 0 0 0 0 0 0 9 40 86 0 0 99 0 avm is the "available free memory" indicator that trends toward zerore is "re-page". The kernel steals a real memory page for one process; immediately repages back to original processpi "page in". A process memory page previously paged out, now paged back in because the process needs itpo "page out" A process memory block was paged out, because it was needed by some other process Light paging activity ( re, pi, po ) is not a concern for worry. Processes get started, need some memory, go away. Sustained paging activity is cause for concern. obiee users are having a terrible day if these counters are always changing. Hang on ... if nqsserver needs that memory and I reduce MAXDATA to keep the process under control, won't the nqsserver process crash when the memory is needed? Yes it will. It means that nqsserver is configured to require too much memory and there are lots of options to reduce the real memory requirement. - number of threads - size of query cache - size of sort But I need nqsserver to keep running. Real memory is over-committed. Many things can cause this:- running all application processes on a single server ... DB server, web servers, WebLogic/WebSphere, sawserver, nqsserver, etc. You could move some of those to another host machine and communicate over the network The need for real memory doesn't go away, it's just distributed to other host machines. - AIX LPAR is configured with too little memory. The AIX admin needs to provide more real memory to the LPAR running obiee. - More memory to this LPAR affects other partitions. Then it's time to visit your friendly IBM rep and buy more memory.

• Windows Azure Service Bus Scatter-Gather Implementation

- by Alan Smith
One of the more challenging enterprise integration patterns that developers may wish to implement is the Scatter-Gather pattern. In this article I will show the basic implementation of a scatter-gather pattern using the topic-subscription model of the windows azure service bus. I’ll be using the implementation in demos, and also as a lab in my training courses, and the pattern will also be included in the next release of my free e-book the “Windows Azure Service Bus Developer Guide”. The Scatter-Gather pattern answers the following scenario. How do you maintain the overall message flow when a message needs to be sent to multiple recipients, each of which may send a reply? Use a Scatter-Gather that broadcasts a message to multiple recipients and re-aggregates the responses back into a single message. The Enterprise Integration Patterns website provides a description of the Scatter-Gather pattern here. The scatter-gather pattern uses a composite of the publish-subscribe channel pattern and the aggregator pattern. The publish-subscribe channel is used to broadcast messages to a number of receivers, and the aggregator is used to gather the response messages and aggregate them together to form a single message. Scatter-Gather Scenario The scenario for this scatter-gather implementation is an application that allows users to answer questions in a poll based voting scenario. A poll manager application will be used to broadcast questions to users, the users will use a voting application that will receive and display the questions and send the votes back to the poll manager. The poll manager application will receive the users’ votes and aggregate them together to display the results. The scenario should be able to scale to support a large number of users. Scatter-Gather Implementation The diagram below shows the overall architecture for the scatter-gather implementation. Messaging Entities Looking at the scatter-gather pattern diagram it can be seen that the topic-subscription architecture is well suited for broadcasting a message to a number of subscribers. The poll manager application can send the question messages to a topic, and each voting application can receive the question message on its own subscription. The static limit of 2,000 subscriptions per topic in the current release means that 2,000 voting applications can receive question messages and take part in voting. The vote messages can then be sent to the poll manager application using a queue. The voting applications will send their vote messages to the queue, and the poll manager will receive and process the vote messages. The questions topic and answer queue are created using the Windows Azure Developer Portal. Each instance of the voting application will create its own subscription in the questions topic when it starts, allowing the question messages to be broadcast to all subscribing voting applications. Data Contracts Two simple data contracts will be used to serialize the questions and votes as brokered messages. The code for these is shown below. [DataContract] public class Question { [DataMember] public string QuestionText { get; set; } } To keep the implementation of the voting functionality simple and focus on the pattern implementation, the users can only vote yes or no to the questions. [DataContract] public class Vote { [DataMember] public string QuestionText { get; set; } [DataMember] public bool IsYes { get; set; } } Poll Manager Application The poll manager application has been implemented as a simple WPF application; the user interface is shown below. A question can be entered in the text box, and sent to the topic by clicking the Add button. The topic and subscriptions used for broadcasting the messages are shown in a TreeView control. The questions that have been broadcast and the resulting votes are shown in a ListView control. When the application is started any existing subscriptions are cleared form the topic, clients are then created for the questions topic and votes queue, along with background workers for receiving and processing the vote messages, and updating the display of subscriptions. public MainWindow() { InitializeComponent(); // Create a new results list and data bind it. Results = new ObservableCollection<Result>(); lsvResults.ItemsSource = Results; // Create a token provider with the relevant credentials. TokenProvider credentials = TokenProvider.CreateSharedSecretTokenProvider (AccountDetails.Name, AccountDetails.Key); // Create a URI for the serivce bus. Uri serviceBusUri = ServiceBusEnvironment.CreateServiceUri ("sb", AccountDetails.Namespace, string.Empty); // Clear out any old subscriptions. NamespaceManager = new NamespaceManager(serviceBusUri, credentials); IEnumerable<SubscriptionDescription> subs = NamespaceManager.GetSubscriptions(AccountDetails.ScatterGatherTopic); foreach (SubscriptionDescription sub in subs) { NamespaceManager.DeleteSubscription(sub.TopicPath, sub.Name); } // Create the MessagingFactory MessagingFactory factory = MessagingFactory.Create(serviceBusUri, credentials); // Create the topic and queue clients. ScatterGatherTopicClient = factory.CreateTopicClient(AccountDetails.ScatterGatherTopic); ScatterGatherQueueClient = factory.CreateQueueClient(AccountDetails.ScatterGatherQueue); // Start the background worker threads. VotesBackgroundWorker = new BackgroundWorker(); VotesBackgroundWorker.DoWork += new DoWorkEventHandler(ReceiveMessages); VotesBackgroundWorker.RunWorkerAsync(); SubscriptionsBackgroundWorker = new BackgroundWorker(); SubscriptionsBackgroundWorker.DoWork += new DoWorkEventHandler(UpdateSubscriptions); SubscriptionsBackgroundWorker.RunWorkerAsync(); } When the poll manager user nters a question in the text box and clicks the Add button a question message is created and sent to the topic. This message will be broadcast to all the subscribing voting applications. An instance of the Result class is also created to keep track of the votes cast, this is then added to an observable collection named Results, which is data-bound to the ListView control. private void btnAddQuestion_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { // Create a new result for recording votes. Result result = new Result() { Question = txtQuestion.Text }; Results.Add(result); // Send the question to the topic Question question = new Question() { QuestionText = result.Question }; BrokeredMessage msg = new BrokeredMessage(question); ScatterGatherTopicClient.Send(msg); txtQuestion.Text = ""; } The Results class is implemented as follows. public class Result : INotifyPropertyChanged { public string Question { get; set; } private int m_YesVotes; private int m_NoVotes; public event PropertyChangedEventHandler PropertyChanged; public int YesVotes { get { return m_YesVotes; } set { m_YesVotes = value; NotifyPropertyChanged("YesVotes"); } } public int NoVotes { get { return m_NoVotes; } set { m_NoVotes = value; NotifyPropertyChanged("NoVotes"); } } private void NotifyPropertyChanged(string prop) { if(PropertyChanged != null) { PropertyChanged(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs(prop)); } } } The INotifyPropertyChanged interface is implemented so that changes to the number of yes and no votes will be updated in the ListView control. Receiving the vote messages from the voting applications is done asynchronously, using a background worker thread. // This runs on a background worker. private void ReceiveMessages(object sender, DoWorkEventArgs e) { while (true) { // Receive a vote message from the queue BrokeredMessage msg = ScatterGatherQueueClient.Receive(); if (msg != null) { // Deserialize the message. Vote vote = msg.GetBody<Vote>(); // Update the results. foreach (Result result in Results) { if (result.Question.Equals(vote.QuestionText)) { if (vote.IsYes) { result.YesVotes++; } else { result.NoVotes++; } break; } } // Mark the message as complete. msg.Complete(); } } } When a vote message is received, the result that matches the vote question is updated with the vote from the user. The message is then marked as complete. A second background thread is used to update the display of subscriptions in the TreeView, with a dispatcher used to update the user interface. // This runs on a background worker. private void UpdateSubscriptions(object sender, DoWorkEventArgs e) { while (true) { // Get a list of subscriptions. IEnumerable<SubscriptionDescription> subscriptions = NamespaceManager.GetSubscriptions(AccountDetails.ScatterGatherTopic); // Update the user interface. SimpleDelegate setQuestion = delegate() { trvSubscriptions.Items.Clear(); TreeViewItem topicItem = new TreeViewItem() { Header = AccountDetails.ScatterGatherTopic }; foreach (SubscriptionDescription subscription in subscriptions) { TreeViewItem subscriptionItem = new TreeViewItem() { Header = subscription.Name }; topicItem.Items.Add(subscriptionItem); } trvSubscriptions.Items.Add(topicItem); topicItem.ExpandSubtree(); }; this.Dispatcher.BeginInvoke(DispatcherPriority.Send, setQuestion); Thread.Sleep(3000); } } Voting Application The voting application is implemented as another WPF application. This one is more basic, and allows the user to vote “Yes” or “No” for the questions sent by the poll manager application. The user interface for that application is shown below. When an instance of the voting application is created it will create a subscription in the questions topic using a GUID as the subscription name. The application can then receive copies of every question message that is sent to the topic. Clients for the new subscription and the votes queue are created, along with a background worker to receive the question messages. The voting application is set to receiving mode, meaning it is ready to receive a question message from the subscription. public MainWindow() { InitializeComponent(); // Set the mode to receiving. IsReceiving = true; // Create a token provider with the relevant credentials. TokenProvider credentials = TokenProvider.CreateSharedSecretTokenProvider (AccountDetails.Name, AccountDetails.Key); // Create a URI for the serivce bus. Uri serviceBusUri = ServiceBusEnvironment.CreateServiceUri ("sb", AccountDetails.Namespace, string.Empty); // Create the MessagingFactory MessagingFactory factory = MessagingFactory.Create(serviceBusUri, credentials); // Create a subcription for this instance NamespaceManager mgr = new NamespaceManager(serviceBusUri, credentials); string subscriptionName = Guid.NewGuid().ToString(); mgr.CreateSubscription(AccountDetails.ScatterGatherTopic, subscriptionName); // Create the subscription and queue clients. ScatterGatherSubscriptionClient = factory.CreateSubscriptionClient (AccountDetails.ScatterGatherTopic, subscriptionName); ScatterGatherQueueClient = factory.CreateQueueClient(AccountDetails.ScatterGatherQueue); // Start the background worker thread. BackgroundWorker = new BackgroundWorker(); BackgroundWorker.DoWork += new DoWorkEventHandler(ReceiveMessages); BackgroundWorker.RunWorkerAsync(); } I took the inspiration for creating the subscriptions in the voting application from the chat application that uses topics and subscriptions blogged by Ovais Akhter here. The method that receives the question messages runs on a background thread. If the application is in receive mode, a question message will be received from the subscription, the question will be displayed in the user interface, the voting buttons enabled, and IsReceiving set to false to prevent more questing from being received before the current one is answered. // This runs on a background worker. private void ReceiveMessages(object sender, DoWorkEventArgs e) { while (true) { if (IsReceiving) { // Receive a question message from the topic. BrokeredMessage msg = ScatterGatherSubscriptionClient.Receive(); if (msg != null) { // Deserialize the message. Question question = msg.GetBody<Question>(); // Update the user interface. SimpleDelegate setQuestion = delegate() { lblQuestion.Content = question.QuestionText; btnYes.IsEnabled = true; btnNo.IsEnabled = true; }; this.Dispatcher.BeginInvoke(DispatcherPriority.Send, setQuestion); IsReceiving = false; // Mark the message as complete. msg.Complete(); } } else { Thread.Sleep(1000); } } } When the user clicks on the Yes or No button, the btnVote_Click method is called. This will create a new Vote data contract with the appropriate question and answer and send the message to the poll manager application using the votes queue. The user voting buttons are then disabled, the question text cleared, and the IsReceiving flag set to true to allow a new message to be received. private void btnVote_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { // Create a new vote. Vote vote = new Vote() { QuestionText = (string)lblQuestion.Content, IsYes = ((sender as Button).Content as string).Equals("Yes") }; // Send the vote message. BrokeredMessage msg = new BrokeredMessage(vote); ScatterGatherQueueClient.Send(msg); // Update the user interface. lblQuestion.Content = ""; btnYes.IsEnabled = false; btnNo.IsEnabled = false; IsReceiving = true; } Testing the Application In order to test the application, an instance of the poll manager application is started; the user interface is shown below. As no instances of the voting application have been created there are no subscriptions present in the topic. When an instance of the voting application is created the subscription will be displayed in the poll manager. Now that a voting application is subscribing, a questing can be sent from the poll manager application. When the message is sent to the topic, the voting application will receive the message and display the question. The voter can then answer the question by clicking on the appropriate button. The results of the vote are updated in the poll manager application. When two more instances of the voting application are created, the poll manager will display the new subscriptions. More questions can then be broadcast to the voting applications. As the question messages are queued up in the subscription for each voting application, the users can answer the questions in their own time. The vote messages will be received by the poll manager application and aggregated to display the results. The screenshots of the applications part way through voting are shown below. The messages for each voting application are queued up in sequence on the voting application subscriptions, allowing the questions to be answered at different speeds by the voters.

• How do I get a .Net 4.0 app to coexist as an application under a SharePoint 2007 website in IIS v7?

- by Craig Nakamoto
I have created a small .Net 4.0 website and installed it on my SharePoint server as a separate web site in IIS v7 (using port 8008 for now). I had to install the .Net 4 framework, set up the database, etc. and this all went smoothly and my app works as a standalone website. Now I am trying to get pages from my website to show up in SharePoint 2007. For various reasons (the SharePoint site is using SSL, security, etc.) I now need to move my .Net app to run under the SharePoint 2007 site in IIS. I have added it as an 'Application' and set it up with the same .Net v4 application pool and settings that were working when it was set up as a standalone site. Now when I try to access the application I get the error at the end of this description. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I already tried following the instructions on this post: http://blogs.msdn.com/sgoodyear/archive/2007/05/07/custom-web-applications-coexisting-with-sharepoint-2007.aspx but that did not help. Thanks! • xcopy and timeouts

- by acidzombie24
Related to this question and this answer http://serverfault.com/questions/48839/backup-on-disc-using-truecrypt-corruption-problem/50829#50829 I want to copy the backup to my HD. However the timeout seems to be a problem. I see many single files then i see File creation error - Data error (cyclic redundancy check). and its currently trying to copy the next file. When i click my computer i see nothing and it also locks up for some seconds (30 maybe) So TrueCrypt is not a good solution if i must be able to copy files back from a volume with a corrupted sector? (answer in other thread please). Is there any way for me to change the timeout? I look here for some flags and didnt see any http://www.scriptlogic.com/support/CustomScripts/XCOPYCommandLineParameters.html

• straight to grub prompt on boot

- by cheshirekow
I am very lost. I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 on a laptop. First reboot was fine. I ran all the recommended upgrades, and now every time I start I get just a grub>_ prompt. No error message, just the prompt, and a little banner at the top saying grub's version and telling me that I have minimal bash style editing. I've tried: 1) Re-installing grub via sudo grub-install sda (There is only one disk with only two partitions, one primary, and one for swap) 2) Changed GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=10 GRUB_TIMEOUT=30 GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="rootdelay=90" GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="rootdelay=90" in /etc/default/grub. No luck. I can boot with the following: grub> set root=(hd0,1) grub> probe (hd0,1) -u c00fadde-f7e8-45e7-a4da-0235605f756 grub> linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-21-generic root=UUID=c00fadde-f7e8-45e7-a4da-0235605f756 rootdelay=90 grub> initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-21-generic grub> boot And then everything seems to be fine from there. From the grub prompt if I try configfile /boot/grub/grub.cfg The screen clears and I get another grub prompt. So, seriously, what could the problem be? edit: Full text of /boot/grub/grub.cfg # # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE # # It is automatically generated by /usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig using templates # from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub # ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/00_header ### if [ -s $prefix/grubenv ]; then load_env fi set default="0" if [ ${prev_saved_entry} ]; then set saved_entry=${prev_saved_entry} save_env saved_entry set prev_saved_entry= save_env prev_saved_entry set boot_once=true fi function savedefault { if [ -z ${boot_once} ]; then saved_entry=${chosen} save_env saved_entry fi } function recordfail { set recordfail=1 if [ -n ${have_grubenv} ]; then if [ -z ${boot_once} ]; then save_env recordfail; fi; fi } insmod ext2 set root='(hd0,1)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set c00fadde-f7e8-45e7-a4da-0235c605f756 if loadfont /usr/share/grub/unicode.pf2 ; then set gfxmode=640x480 insmod gfxterm insmod vbe if terminal_output gfxterm ; then true ; else # For backward compatibility with versions of terminal.mod that don't # understand terminal_output terminal gfxterm fi fi insmod ext2 set root='(hd0,1)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set c00fadde-f7e8-45e7-a4da-0235c605f756 set locale_dir=($root)/boot/grub/locale set lang=en insmod gettext if [ ${recordfail} = 1 ]; then set timeout=-1 else set timeout=30 fi ### END /etc/grub.d/00_header ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme ### set menu_color_normal=white/black set menu_color_highlight=black/light-gray ### END /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/10_linux ### menuentry 'Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-21-generic' --class ubuntu --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os { recordfail insmod ext2 set root='(hd0,1)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set c00fadde-f7e8-45e7-a4da-0235c605f756 linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-21-generic root=UUID=c00fadde-f7e8-45e7-a4da-0235c605f756 ro rootdelay=90 rootdelay=90 initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-21-generic } menuentry 'Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-21-generic (recovery mode)' --class ubuntu --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os { recordfail insmod ext2 set root='(hd0,1)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set c00fadde-f7e8-45e7-a4da-0235c605f756 echo 'Loading Linux 2.6.32-21-generic ...' linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-21-generic root=UUID=c00fadde-f7e8-45e7-a4da-0235c605f756 ro single rootdelay=90 echo 'Loading initial ramdisk ...' initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-21-generic } ### END /etc/grub.d/10_linux ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/20_memtest86+ ### menuentry "Memory test (memtest86+)" { insmod ext2 set root='(hd0,1)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set c00fadde-f7e8-45e7-a4da-0235c605f756 linux16 /boot/memtest86+.bin } menuentry "Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200)" { insmod ext2 set root='(hd0,1)' search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set c00fadde-f7e8-45e7-a4da-0235c605f756 linux16 /boot/memtest86+.bin console=ttyS0,115200n8 } ### END /etc/grub.d/20_memtest86+ ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ### if [ ${timeout} != -1 ]; then if sleep --verbose --interruptible 10 ; then set timeout=0 fi fi ### END /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/40_custom ### # This file provides an easy way to add custom menu entries.   • iSCSI connection timing out on ESX 3.5 against a NetApp storage appliance

- by Jesse1973
I get a timeout on iSCSI on different ESX hosts (3.5) at different times. It is puzzling, as both the ESX hosts as windows and other guests are experiencing timeouts. The iSCSI network is segregated on a private network. Here is an export of vmkiscsid.log from last night: 2010-02-10-12:30:38: iscsid: an InitiatorAlias= is required, but was not found in /etc/vmware/vmkiscsid/initiatorname.iscsi 2010-02-10-12:30:38: iscsid: LogLevel = 0 2010-02-10-12:30:38: iscsid: LogSync = 0 2010-02-10-12:30:42: iscsid: Login Success: iqn.1992-08.com.netapp:sn.101197719,default,192.168.73.2,3260,2001, 0x1 2010-02-10-12:30:42: iscsid: connection1:0 is operational now 2010-02-16-02:03:35: iscsid: Kernel reported iSCSI connection 1:0 error (1008) state (3) 2010-02-16-02:03:39: iscsid: connection1:0 is operational after recovery (2 attempts) 2010-02-16-04:02:27: iscsid: Kernel reported iSCSI connection 1:0 error (1008) state (3) 2010-02-16-04:02:32: iscsid: connection1:0 is operational after recovery (2 attempts) Should i edit the timeout value on the ESX host for iSCSI? This may work around the problem but will not solve it.

• WSUS data store error

- by Kalenus
I have one upstream server and 17 downstream (configured as replicas). I'm getting this error in one of them and I'm stuck: "An error occurred with the server's data store". Details: SqlException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. at Microsoft.UpdateServices.DatabaseAccess.DBConnection.DrainObsoleteConnections(SqlException e) at Microsoft.UpdateServices.DatabaseAccess.DBConnection.ExecuteReader() at Microsoft.UpdateServices.Internal.DataAccess.HideUpdatesForReplicaSync(String xmlUpdateIds) at Microsoft.UpdateServices.ServerSync.CatalogSyncAgentCore.ProcessHiddenUpdates(Guid[] hiddenUpdates) at Microsoft.UpdateServices.ServerSync.CatalogSyncAgentCore.ReplicaSync() at Microsoft.UpdateServices.ServerSync.CatalogSyncAgentCore.ExecuteSyncProtocol(Boolean allowRedirect) I already tried using the cleanup wizard to no avail.

• How can I expire non-active sessions on my Netscreen SSG140?

- by David Mackintosh
I have a Juniper Netscreen SSG-140. While experimenting with a VoIP service, I defined a custom policy that was to be used to permit the possible ports in use to be sent back to the VoIP server from systems connecting across the internet. Because I'd had problems in the past with VoIP systems getting broken when their UDP sessions were expired out faster than their keep-alives were generated, I set the timeout on this custom service to be 'never'. After much experimentation, I happened to notice that my session count on the firewall has grown from a couple thousand to over 36000. After discussion with the VoIP "expert", I set the timeout to be 30 minutes; however, all the sessions set up during the experimentation process are still there, more than 3 days later. Is there a way I can force these old sessions to get expired and removed from the session table, or am I looking at resetting my firewall? (Both firewalls, actually -- they are in a cluster.)

• ActiveMQ Pure Master / Slave - Out of sync

- by pico
What i have : 1 master broker and 1 slave broker both in ActiveMQ 5.4.0 What i use : waitForSlave on master side and failover uri on slave side (in the master connector URI) What i want to do : I want to wait some delay (like 5 seconds) in case of a tiny network failures between master and slave before starting slave transpôrt connectors So i put this in slave config : <broker xmlns="http://activemq.apache.org/schema/core" brokerName="slave" dataDirectory="${activemq.base}/data" useJmx="true" persistent="true" populateJMSXUserID="true" masterConnectorURI="failover://(tcp://master:61616)?initialReconnectDelay=1000&maxReconnectDelay=30000" shutdownOnMasterFailure="false" advisorySupport="false"> It seems to work but after a network hang between master and slave, the slave reconnect successfully and then the master logs a lot of : 2010-10-18 17:08:44,421 | ERROR | Slave Failed | org.apache.activemq.broker.ft.MasterBroker | ActiveMQ Task java.lang.IllegalStateException: Cannot lookup a connection that had not been registered: ID:master-1040-634226732611718750-0:0 at org.apache.activemq.broker.MapTransportConnectionStateRegister.lookupConnectionState(MapTransportConnectionStateRegister.java:93) at org.apache.activemq.broker.TransportConnection.lookupConnectionState(TransportConnection.java:1412) at org.apache.activemq.broker.TransportConnection.processRemoveConsumer(TransportConnection.java:561) at org.apache.activemq.command.RemoveInfo.visit(RemoveInfo.java:76) at org.apache.activemq.broker.TransportConnection.service(TransportConnection.java:309) at org.apache.activemq.broker.TransportConnection$1.onCommand(TransportConnection.java:185) at org.apache.activemq.transport.ResponseCorrelator.onCommand(ResponseCorrelator.java:116) at org.apache.activemq.transport.TransportFilter.onCommand(TransportFilter.java:69) at org.apache.activemq.transport.vm.VMTransport.iterate(VMTransport.java:218) at org.apache.activemq.thread.DedicatedTaskRunner.runTask(DedicatedTaskRunner.java:98) at org.apache.activemq.thread.DedicatedTaskRunner$1.run(DedicatedTaskRunner.java:36) On the slave side everything is fine. So after that, i've tried to stop the master to see if the slave is capable of turning master after these "network hangs". The master took long time to shutdown (10 seconds) and then some error message appears in slave logs : 2010-10-18 17:09:32,915 | WARN | Async error occurred: java.lang.IllegalStateException: Cannot lookup a connection that had not been registered: ID:master-1049-634226732657812500-0:3 | org.apache.activemq.broker.TransportConnection.Service | VMTransport: vm://slave#5 java.lang.IllegalStateException: Cannot lookup a connection that had not been registered: ID:master-1049-634226732657812500-0:3 at org.apache.activemq.broker.MapTransportConnectionStateRegister.lookupConnectionState(MapTransportConnectionStateRegister.java:93) at org.apache.activemq.broker.TransportConnection.lookupConnectionState(TransportConnection.java:1412) at org.apache.activemq.broker.TransportConnection.processRemoveSession(TransportConnection.java:600) at org.apache.activemq.command.RemoveInfo.visit(RemoveInfo.java:74) at org.apache.activemq.broker.TransportConnection.service(TransportConnection.java:309) at org.apache.activemq.broker.TransportConnection$1.onCommand(TransportConnection.java:185) at org.apache.activemq.transport.ResponseCorrelator.onCommand(ResponseCorrelator.java:116) at org.apache.activemq.transport.TransportFilter.onCommand(TransportFilter.java:69) at org.apache.activemq.transport.vm.VMTransport.iterate(VMTransport.java:218) at org.apache.activemq.thread.DedicatedTaskRunner.runTask(DedicatedTaskRunner.java:98) at org.apache.activemq.thread.DedicatedTaskRunner$1.run(DedicatedTaskRunner.java:36) Are they any ways to keep my kaha stores (they are individual stores) synchronised? The main problem is that the slave never turn master after a master failure, it stay block on this message : 2010-10-18 17:09:33,681 | WARN | Transport (master/172.21.60.61:61616) failed to tcp://master:61616 , attempting to automatically reconnect due to: java.net.SocketException: Software caused connection abort: socket write error | org.apache.activemq.transport.failover.FailoverTransport | ActiveMQ Transport: tcp://master/172.21.60.61:61616 I'm totally stuck with these syncs problems, any help welcome! • How to change mouse pointer icon in Xfce Debian 7 Wheezy?

- by kadaj
I copied the cursor theme (oxy-neon or Oxygen Neon) to /usr/share/icons and from Applications Menu - Settings - Mouse, I am able to see the new theme. I clicked on it and the pointer doesn't change. However the text typing icon ('I'), busy icon, hand icon, and resize window icons got changed. The pointer icon remains the same, the black Adwaita. I removed the Adwaita folder from the icons folder, and still the mouse pointer doesn't change. Is the pointer theme specified elsewhere? I have no setting under home directory. I tried logging out, restart, restarting xfwm4, but nothing works. I just found that the icon pointer changes when the pointer is inside Firefox, but it's not consistent. It keeps changing when I click menu items. Very weird. Any idea how to fix this?
