• Dual Monitor difficulties (VirtualBox ubuntu host) - rdesktop sessions mirror

  I am running ubuntu 9.10 host with a Windows guest and need to extend my guest windows desktop into the second monitor (otherwise I will have to convert to a dual boot situation because this is a work furnished computer, please HELP!!) Current Situation: Windows Guest Running with VRDP enabled and successfully connecting. Guest Additions running and VBox set to 2 monitors and I see two monitors in display settings. connecting via 2 different rdesktop sessions mirrors the display. even though display settings of Guest Windows is set to extend desktop. is there a rdesktop option to signify to the VBox it is the second display? I need the second connection be the second display. any ideas?

  In one line : is the following possible : Airport <- "osx bridge" - vbox-Host-only - vm's Virtualbox (3.1.4) setup : Host : Mac OS X 10.5 Guest : Ubuntu Linux adapter1 - Bridged (en1: Airport) : To give the vm access to internet and communicate when Airport is connected adapter2 - Host-Only (vboxnet0) : To enable host/guest communication when Airport is not connected I'd like to make it simpler and only keep adapter 2 (host-only) and relying on os x connection sharing/bridging I thought i could just keep the Host only configuration, and on the host go to internet sharing and select "share from airport" to vboxnet0 . Only to find out that vbox's virtual interface doesn't appear in the interfaces list on os x preferences. I know that on a linux host you could install something called bridge-utils and use that to bridge the two insterfaces. Is there any thing like that for Mac ?

  I know this question is looking like an easy question or not a question at all but it's not really easy question. I'm not related to security and anti-viruses and just don't trust every provided anti-virus. So first question is a real question - Is it OK (safe) to not use anti-virus at all. I know how to use firewall, usually I use only trusted connections and surfing trusted sites. My chances to get virus is really low. Even I've got a bit outdated PC and don't want to pay the performance for it. I can do monthly scans without having one installed - is it OK to be safe ? If not can you recommend a good free antivirus solution?

  I have a server with a LAN facing address of 192.168.5.100 (eth0) and another LAN facing address of 192.168.6.6 (eth1). On this server I have a Virtualbox instance of fedora running an apache webserver (on port 8080) with a bridged interface to eth1 on the host server with address of 192.168.6.7 Users on the 192.168.6.x network can access the Webserver on the Vbox instance (192.168.6.7) with no problems. My question is what kind of iptables entries or commands should be made/executed so as to allow for users on the 192.168.5.x network to access the webserver on the vbox instance. (I'm hoping their url can be something like: http://192.168.5.100:8080)

• Portable VirtualBox with Ubuntu on two machines

  I have VirtualBox Portable installed from vbox.me. I moved it on a USB drive and added a virtual Ubuntu. It works fine on the computer I created it, but moving the usb drive to a different the Ubuntu does not start any more. I already changed location descriptions in <machine>.vbox and the VirtualBox.xml. When pressing Shift while starting the GRUB loader comes up, so I tried the recovery mode. Same here – startup freezes and nothing happens. Any hints for me? On the settings in my vm vbos I choose - network. enable network - bridged adapter. I fount in ifconfig the ip address. Putty cant connect to the server. Why? How can I connect Ubuntu Server 10.04 virtualbox from my local computer? p.s. I dont have router - I have modem. Thanks a lot.

• Java Fx Data bind not working with File Read

  Hi I am using a very simple JavaFx client to upload files. I read the file in chunks of 1 MB (using Byte Buffer) and upload using multi part POST to a PHP script. I want to update the progress bar of my client to show progress after each chunk is uploaded. The calculations for upload progress look correct but the progress bar is not updated. I am using bind keyword. I am no JavaFx expert and I am hoping some one can point out my mistake. • A stupid question regarding google gadgets. How to host a google gadget? How it works?

  Hi, I spent 5 hours by checking google gadgets websites and FAQs. maybe I am really stupid. I have no idea how to host a gadget. What I knew from reading the google website: 1, I can write gadget with xml, javascript etc.. 2, gadget can be added to igoogle etc.. 3, google can host the gadget for you. 4, gadget can be hosted at anywhere??? All of the above information doesn't answer my question. For instance, with jQuery or Dojo Toolkit, I can download the javascript framework and use it. With google gadget, I can not find a download link for the framework. Why? Does google provide its framework? If no, why does google website say it can be hosted anywhere? I am totally confused. A download link is nowhere in google-gadget website. A brief explanation or some helpful links are very welcome!! Thanks a lot!!! Please don't blame me if you think this question is too silly.

• pass data from popup to parent

  I have a parent w/ a popup child. When parent loads, I have to call a function within the popup without showing the popup (thus, I load "pupLove" but don't include it in layout)....I then pass this data to the parent. When the user manually clicks another button to open the popup, the same function is called & data passed to the parent. However, I am not able to pass dg.length to the parent. I believe the root problem is that I am loading "pupLove" & thus the parents are getting confused.....I'm guessing if I get rid of "pupLove" I can pass the data correctly but will need to call the child's function at creationComplete of the parent....how do I do that? • Is www.example.com/post/21/edit a RESTful URI? I think I know the answer, but have another question.

  I'm almost afraid to post this question, there has to be an obvious answer I've overlooked, but here I go: Context: I am creating a blog for educational purposes (want to learn python and web.py). I've decided that my blog have posts, so I've created a Post class. I've also decided that posts can be created, read, updated, or deleted (so CRUD). So in my Post class, I've created methods that respond to POST, GET, PUT, and DELETE HTTP methods). So far so good. The current problem I'm having is a conceptual one, I know that sending a PUT HTTP message (with an edited Post) to, e.g., /post/52 should update post with id 52 with the body contents of the HTTP message. What I do not know is how to conceptually correctly serve the (HTML) edit page. Will doing it like this: /post/52/edit violate the idea of URI, as 'edit' is not a resource, but an action? On the other side though, could it be considered a resource since all that URI will respond to is a GET method, that will only return an HTML page? So my ultimate question is this: How do I serve an HTML page intended for user editing in a RESTful manner?

• Seamless Mode Not Working Correctly in Virtual Box

  I run Ubuntu Desktop in a VirtualBox seamless mode, hosted on Windows 7. I recently upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04 and seamless mode no longer works correctly. I have re-installed guest extensions. The problem is that the Ubuntu desktop wallpaper is shown, effectively blocking the Windows desktop. I can bring Windows apps to the foreground, but as soon as I bring any Ubuntu window to the foreground, all the windows apps will disappear, hidden by the ubuntu desktop even if I activated an Ubuntu window in a different monitor. So, it is not very much different from full-screen mode at this time. I suspect if I could turn off the Ubuntu desktop or wallpaper this would be a sufficient workaround (this is basically what Seamless mode is) but that does not seem to be possible within Ubuntu itself. [Jeremy doesn't specify system config, but I can confirm I'm seeing this behavior in Win 7 64-bit with both 32-bit and 64-bit guests. Giovanni sees the same thing on his laptop running Vista Ultimate 64 bit after upgrading his 32-bit guest to 12.04 (forums.virtualbox.org p225407, requires logging in with your free Oracle account). I was using vbox 4.1.14r77440 and matching Guest Additions. I upgraded to 4.1.16-78094 vbox+additions. Still a problem. And I filed launchpad bug 999929 to see if I can get feedback from developers. – tbc0] Any other ideas?

• Unable to Install VirtualBox Due to Missing Kernel Module

  I am trying to install VirtualBox on my Ubuntu. I first tried to sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose in a terminal, but after the configuration step, it fails with an error: No suitable module for running kernel found When proceeding with starting virtualbox, I get this error: WARNING: The character device /dev/vboxdrv does not exist. Please install the virtualbox-ose-dkms package and the appropriate headers, most likely linux-headers-generic. You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed. So I tried the package from http://www.virtualbox.org/, but starting VirtualBox fails with: WARNING: The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded. Either there is no module available for the current kernel (2.6.38-8-generic-pae) or it failed to load. Please recompile the kernel module and install it by sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed. So I ran sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup, but it fails too: * Stopping VirtualBox kernel modules [ OK ] * Uninstalling old VirtualBox DKMS kernel modules [ OK ] * Trying to register the VirtualBox kernel modules using DKMS Error! Your kernel headers for kernel 2.6.38-8-generic-pae cannot be found at /lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic-pae/build or /lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic-pae/source. * Failed, trying without DKMS * Recompiling VirtualBox kernel modules * Look at /var/log/vbox-install.log to find out what went wrong The contents of /var/log/vbox-install.log. There was a pretty good discussion about this subject earlier and lots of people participated with their opinion. Though the answer was very simple but the conversation was indeed delightful and was indeed very informative. In this blog post I have another following up question to all of you. What is the difference between INNER JOIN and JOIN? If you are working with database you will find developers use above both the kinds of the joins in their SQL Queries. Here is the quick example of the same. Query using INNER JOIN SELECT * FROM Table1 INNER JOIN  Table2 ON Table1.Col1 = Table2.Col1 Query using JOIN SELECT * FROM Table1 JOIN  Table2 ON Table1.Col1 = Table2.Col1 The question is what is the difference between above two syntax. Here is the answer – They are equal to each other. There is absolutely no difference between them. They are equal in performance as well as implementation. JOIN is actually shorter version of INNER JOIN. Personally I prefer to write INNER JOIN because it is much cleaner to read and it avoids any confusion if there is related to JOIN. For example if users had written INNER JOIN instead of JOIN there would have been no confusion in mind and hence there was no need to have original question. But I tried this, which is I installed windows xp on virtual box. Vbox showed me thow unknow USB devices. I connected them and installed windows bluethooth drivers to xp. But it didn't ditected Bluethooth either. Also, when I set off mode in hardware switch, those unknown devices disappear from Vbox usb device seletcion menu. So, they are definitely something to do with wifi or bluethooth. Please help me..

• notification icons in Gnome Shell cause lag

  Before marking this as a duplicate please read my question throughly. OK I am having a bit of a problem with Gnome Shell (3.3.90); Any time there are any icons in the bottom notification bar it causes massive lag when opening/closing and interacting with the Activities panel. If I close all applications that have a notification icon the lag goes away 100%. In My case it's drop box, but any program that requires a icon in the notification area will cause this issue to happen. I am using an AMD A6-3420M running Catalyst 11.11, however I can confirm that this is not a driver issue. I had the same issue on a system running a GeForce 8600GT,and a HD6850, and there is another question on here titled "Gnome Shell lags after a while" where the user is having the same exact issue and He is also using a nVidia card, a 9800GT to be specific. Please, this question has been asked several time and every time people say its a fglrx issue and close the question, or they mark the question as a duplicate and link to a question that says its an fglrx issue. This is not a driver issue, I understand that the AMD drivers caught heat for quite some time for Gnome Shell compatibility issues but those issues have been resolved. Aside from this issue Gnome Shell runs beautiful on my HD650, my A6-3420M, and my 8600GT. Having said that, does anyone know how to correct this issue? Closing Drop Box is not an option for me either.

• How to set up VirtualBox Bridged Network on Windows 7 Host?

  I have virtualbox running on a Windows 2008 server, with a guest running ubuntu 10.04. The ubuntu guest is given a static IP of 192.168.1.4, which also has openssh installed. The guest has bridged network setup, I can ping 192.168.1.4 from any machine in the LAN, the ubuntu guest can also access the LAN. However, when I try to PuTTY into the ubuntu machine, I always get "connection refused". Below are some setup details: ubuntu IP: 192.168.1.4 hosts.allow sshd : 192.168.1.38 hosts.deny ALL : ALL when I the following command, I can see that sshd is listening on port 22: lsof -i tcp:22 Any idea? EDIT: It turned out to be a wrong VirtualBox Bridged Network setup. I give the Ubuntu guest a static IP of 192.168.1.4 (assigned to eth0). Then in the Windows 7 host, in the Network and Sharing Center, there is a new connection named "VirtualBox Host-Only Network" after the bridge is setup, that connection is again given the same static IP of 192.168.1.4. Once I change the "VirtualBox Host-Only Network" to automatically obtain an IP address, it's getting a different IP address of 169.254.249.70(Tentative). And now I can SSH into 192.168.1.4 with no problem, even without touching hosts.allow and hosts.deny. I've also noticed that in the properties windows (see screenshot below) of the "VirtualBox Host-Only Network", the second checkbox, "VirtualBox Bridged Networking Driver" is unchecked. While the same checkbox of the physical NIC (that is bridged to) is checked. So my further question is: is this how VBox bridged networking supposed to be setup? Any rationale behind this? I'd appreciate if someone could provide some explaination on VBox bridged networking setup on Windows host and I'll accept it as an answer.

  I'm trying to install the Guest Additions in VirtualBox 4.04. Host OS is Ubuntu desktop 11.04 64bit, guest OS is Ubuntu server 11.10 64bit. $ sudo ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run After some output this line is printed: The headers for the current running kernel were not found. But the headers are installed, at least accordingly to dpkg: $ dpkg --get-selections | grep linux-headers linux-headers-3.0.0-12 install linux-headers-3.0.0-12-server install linux-headers-server install The running kernel is: $ uname -a Linux foobar 3.0.0-12-server #20-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 7 16:36:30 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 X86_64 GNU/Linux How do I fix things so that Guest Additions installer is able to find kernel headers? Update: added full output. The headers for the current running kernel were not found. If the module compilation fails then this could be the reason. Building the main Guest Additions module ...done. Building the shared folder support module ...fail! (Look at /var/log/vboxadd-install.log to find out what went wrong) Installing the Window System drivers ...fails! (Could not find the X.Org or XFree86 Window System). I don't care for fail #2, because that's a server and I don't need X server. But I need shared folder support. Some further detail: $ tail /val/log/vboxadd-install.log .......... cc1: some warnings being treated as errors make[2]: *** [/tmp/vbox.0/vfsmod.o] Error 1 make[1]: *** [_module_/tmp/vbox.0] Error 2 make: *** [vboxsf] Error 2

• Boundary conditions for testing

  Ok so in a programming test I was given the following question. Question 1 (1 mark) Spot the potential bug in this section of code: void Class::Update( float dt ) { totalTime += dt; if( totalTime == 3.0f ) { // Do state change m_State++; } } The multiple choice answers for this question were. a) It has a constant floating point number where it should have a named constant variable b) It may not change state with only an equality test c) You don't know what state you are changing to d) The class is named poorly I wrongly answered this with answer C. I eventually received feedback on the answers and the feedback for this question was Correct answer is a. This is about understanding correct boundary conditions for tests. The other answers are arguably valid points, but do not indicate a potential bug in the code. My question here is, what does this have to do with boundary conditions? My understanding of boundary conditions is checking that a value is within a certain range, which isn't the case here. Upon looking over the question, in my opinion, B should be the correct answer when considering the accuracy issues of using floating point values.

• Install Problems on ASUS X401A Notebook

  okay... I tried many approaches to install Ubuntu 12.xxx on my new Asus notebook with varying degrees of failure... First: I'm not a newbie but I'm as frustrated as one! Install background: Install from USB DVD drive: The install went well. Re-booted machine. choose ubuntu and it errors with a MBR file error (can't remember the exact wording - something to do with missing the file. Choosing to boot W7 works fine. Install from USB Stick: Couldn't get machine to recognize the .iso Install into Oracle's Vbox: Got the boot splash screen, then hangs with a zillion errors. Note: I didn't have any problems installing ubuntu in Vbox on my iMac and it run's great. Installed using wubi: Installed fine but get errors when booting ubuntu (it doesn't find the needed wubi files). I downloaded to the C: drive and tried installing from there - no luck. For kicks: I tried running Slax Linux .iso from a USB stick and it runs fine. Some Questions: Did I use the correct .iso? (I tried 12.04.0 and 12.04.1 both 32 and 64 bit versions. I simply downloaded them from the download link and didn't use/look for an alternate version. Do I need to do something special when burning the .iso to disc? What? I did read tons of posts but, no luck with finding the solution. Any help is appreciated... thanks
