• Windows 7 Busy Icon won't stop spinning

  In windows 7 you have the busy icon that is a little blue wheel spinning beside the cursor when it is doing something. It has started to spin for about a second every 3-5 seconds. There is noting running that I can tell on the computer to cause the busy icon. It gets very annoying and I am not sure what to do to get it to stop. Ideas? Running a CPU Usage Gadget says I have less than 5% of the CPU being use and I have over 6GB of RAM free. (I have 8GB total) I am running a 3.6 GHZ AMD FX 4100 processor. EDIT- What I am actually seeing is the working in background pointer (the pointer is still visible beside the busy icon). EDIT 2 - After realizing this happened with the printer installation I turned on the the printer and the busy icon stopped. The printer is setup wirelessly. How do I stop Windows from (I guess) checking for the printer? That is what I assume it is doing. I am using a HP Officejet 8600

• What can I do with a home server?

  I have an old 700 Mhz Pentium III at home running Windows 2000 Server, with a home router set up to pass incoming requests to it and a DynDNS account set up so it's easy to find. Right now I'm using it for a number of things: Shared folders + backup inside the home network Shared Printer inside the home network Domain Controller, just because I feel like it and because it's useful to me as practice to keep those "enterprise" administration skills. Web Server FTP remote access for my files. I abandoned this for security reasons, but it's still worth leaving visible. Remote Desktop in to the home network (thinking about adding VPN service) SVN repository MySQL - Will be moving to SQL Server 2008 Standard soon. After I upgrade my wife's laptop from home to pro later this year it will also become a domain controller It's the only place I still have access to Internet Explorer 6 any more without setting up a new virtual machine, so I use it for testing code with that browser. The question is: What else could I be doing with this machine? Update Additional ideas based on the suggestions: Media Server/DVR Build server PBX SSH Proxy Server Continuous Integration Server Personal OpenID Provider Update2 Just a note that this server was recently upgraded to an Atom330 with 2 GB ram and bigger hard drive. For all that's slow for a "modern" cpu, it should still be much faster than the old Pentium III and the expected power savings should make the upgrade essentially free over the course of the next year or two. Also, it's now running Windows Server 2008.

• Super slow opening my downloads folder

  I have an exe file in my download folder that I half downloaded through utorrent (it's not piracy, a legit file from people who use bittorrent to distribute large files). I think I tried to open it while it was still sharing, that is, did not stop the upload. That actually froze my computer. When I restart in utorrent I set the file to be deleted. Unfortunately even though utorrent doesn't see that file anymore, it's still visible in my download folder. Whenever I try to open my download folder it literally takes 10 minutes or more. It opens, but is empty and the blue progress bar needs a long time to complete. After completion I can use the download folder normally, but opening and closing things in that folder takes a long time. I see the exe that I tried to download. I tried to delete it. But it was taking so long 30+ minutes that I eventually just hit cancel. That doesn't even work, and it was slowing down the computer. Couldn't figure out how to stop the delete so I just pulled the plug. Should I just forget about that dl folder and set a new one? Is there something I can do? Thanks.

• Why do moving lines become fuzzy on my monitor?

  I recently got a new notebook. With moving images there are some graphical issues, and I'd like to know what causes them. None of my earlier monitors exhibited similar issues. Moving high contrast lines become jagged, similar to interleaved videos. When moving a horizontal line vertically those artifacts are colored, when moving a vertical line horizontally they aren't colored. The effect isn't observable in static images. And when moving faster the zone in which it occurs becomes wider. The effect is very visible if I move a window around on the borders of the window and wherever high contrast lines appear. But it appears when watching videos too. The vertical line in that image moves to the right, the horizontal line upwards. The effect is most likely related to the fact that each real pixel consists of different sub-pixels for the different color channels. But how are these causing the observed effect? Is the change at which the different colors change to the destination brightness different? The optical impression is that every second pixel in a chess board like arrangement is adapting slower than it's neighbors. But that doesn't make much sense.

• KVM and libvirt: How to configure a new disc device to an existing VM?

  I've got an Ubuntu 9.04 server running two VM's. In /etc/libvirt/qemu/machine1.xml two disk devices are defined like this: <devices> <emulator>/usr/bin/kvm</emulator> <disk type='file' device='disk'> <source file='/vserver/machine1/disk0.qcow2'/> <target dev='hda' bus='ide'/> </disk> <disk type='file' device='disk'> <source file='/vserver/machine1/disk1.qcow2'/> <target dev='hdb' bus='ide'/> </disk> I need more storage space in at least one of the devices and thought about adding a third hdc device by simply adding one with same style as above and re-organising my mount structure (The virtual sizes of the current qcow2 files are unfortunately limited.) My problem is that reloading libvirtd and restarting the VM do not result in a new visible device (checked with fdisk). I'm aware of extending an existing qcow2 file (converting to raw format, cat-ing/adding the new one, using smth. like gparted) - but only as a last resort. Hopefully it's something very simple I'm missing?

• Cannot Connect To VMWare Guest OS Using NEither RDP Nor

  Hi, I have a PC (Windows XP SP3) with VMWare Workstation 7 installed. The VMWare hosts Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition R2. RealVNC (4.1.3) is installed on both OS'es. Both of them use Hamachi2. Host OS (WinXP) also runs ZoneAlarm Firewall. Hamachi network is set as trusted. My goal is to allow RDP and VNC connections to be made to the guest OS (Windows Server 2003). Both options work absolutely fine if I connect from the host OS. However I have problems when other computers from our Hamachi network try to connect the guest OS (Win2K3). 1) RDP connections. RDP window opens, shows black content and after 15-20 seconds displays following error: http://lh6.ggpht.com/_yQhsRRimgKU/TArRrtiteQI/AAAAAAAABZA/e96za-y9wzo/rdp_error.JPG 2) RealVCN connections. Users are able to connect but all they see is a black screen inside VNC window. At the same their input (keystrokes or mouse moves/clicks) are visible when looking at the console window of the Win2K3. I really appreciate any ideas on how to resolve mentioned problems. • Troubleshooting an overheating CPU

  I & my father just recently put together a new PC. Specs below. From the very beginning, on boot it will often complain that the CPU is too hot. If I sit in BIOS and watch the CPU, it'll drop back down from red to blue (<72C), at which point I've tended to just boot into Windows...and haven't had any problems. In fact, I've played a couple hours straight of Skyrim at max settings, and not had any visible issues. That said, I've occasionally walked away & come back to find that it's crashed. Yesterday, it crashed (while idle) twice in 12 hours, which shifted the balance from busy-with-life to nervous-I'm-about-to-melt-something. I just installed Core Temp which is showing my 4 cores fluxuating between 70-98C. I'm guessing at this point that the CPU fan may be incorrectly installed or defective. My first thought is to either (a) add water cooling (which the case supports) and / or (b) replace the CPU fan with an after-market one. That said, I'm very open to suggestions. A note, while I certainly don't want to burn money here, I have a baby coming any day now and am still unpacking from a recent move so if I have a choice between an option that costs money and another that takes a while...I'll happily spend a bit extra. Side question: Should I be nervous to even have this on at this point? Let me know if there's something useful I could add to my report. Otherwise, I'm looking forward to your suggestions! Thanks. • What can be a reason for phpMyAdmin login to be not working (not at all, no reaction on submit)?

  When I open "http://localhost/phpmyadmin/", enter "root" as the user name and my MySQL root password and press go, then if I was using Firefox, I was getting offered to download index.php file (of a zero length), if I was using Opera 11, it said "Connection closed by remote server". Following recommendations I've removed all packages related to phpMyAdmin, PHP, MySQL and Apache and then reinstalled them step-by step (instead of just issuing apt-get install phpmyadmin and relying on the system to install the whole LAMP stack via dependencies as I've done before). The only change I've got was Firefox to stop offering to download index.php - now when I press Ok to submit my password, it just doesn't show any visible reaction at all. What may the reason be and how to fix it? I use up-to-date Xubuntu 11.04. Reinstalling the whole LAMP stack and phpMyAdmin did not help, neither did removing AppArmor. I've tried to use SQLBuddy instead, but there's exactly the same problem. So, I think, the problem is not in phpMyAdmin but in MySQL, Apache or something. MySQL seems to work if I use command line to access it. Apache & PHP seems to work also, as the login page of phpMyAdmin displays correctly.

• How to connect the virtual networks of vmware guests running on different hosts?

  In a test setup, we are running several virtual machines on a single vmware workstation host. All virtual machines are connected via a "host only" network. This runs fine up to 2 or 3 virtual machines (depending on the host hardware). To allow more virtual machines, we want to use more host machines. Details about the environment and applications: Host PCs are running Windows XP in a corporate intranet. VMware used is Workstation 6.5 Guests are running Windows Server 2003 All guests act as Web Servers One of the guests additionally acts as Windows File server, offering shared folders for the other guests to connect to. Restrictions: VMware guests shall not be visible from the intranet. Changes to the host PC are restricted by corporate policy. In the virtual network, no domain controller exists. All virtual machines are member of the same workgroup. Running the virtual network as NAT is possible. Port forwarding might be used if it does not conflict with ports used by the host PC. Looking for a solution, I found hints about using router or vpn software on the hosts, but without any details how to setup. (I found a similar question Sharing the network between 2 VMware hosts, but the answer was not sufficient for me.)

• MySQL root user can't access database

  Hi all, We have a MySQL database ('myhours') on a production database server that is accessible to one user ('edsf') only, but not to the root user. The command 'SHOW DATABASES' as the root user does not list the 'myhours' database. The same command as the 'edsf' user lists the database: mysql> SHOW DATABASES; +--------------------+ | Database | +--------------------+ | information_schema | | myhours | +--------------------+ 2 rows in set (0.01 sec) Only the 'edsf' user can access the 'myhours' database with 'USE myhours'. Neither user seems to have permission to grant further permissions for this database. My questions are: Q1. How is it that the root user does not have permission to use the database? How could this have come about? The output of SHOW GRANTS FOR 'root'@'localhost'; looks fine to me: GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON *.* TO 'root'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY PASSWORD '*xxx' WITH GRANT OPTION Q2. • How to get back the themes feature in Windows XP?

  When I try to set a visual style in Windows XP (the standard Luna, for example), I get one of these two: "Access denied" error. It works, but when I restart the computer, I get the Classic look again, with no errors. Also, the "Windows and icons" dropdown is grayed out in the "Appearance". This is a list of things I have tried, with no results: Making sure "Use visual styles on windows" is checked on System Properties Advanced Performance. Restarting the "Themes" service. It starts cleanly, no errors. Applying these two fixes: Kelly's Corner and tweaks.com. Running sfc /scannow and checking the integrity of uxtheme.dll against a clean installation of XP Restoring the whole \Windows\Resources\Themes directory. Creating a new user. The new user does not seem to suffer this problem. Maybe this is the solution, create a new user and migrating all the data, but it would be a pain, and I would prefer reinstalling the whole thing. I am using Windows XP Professional SP3, with no spyware, no virus, and no other visible malfunctions. How can I fix this?

• How to safely send newsletters on VPS (SMTP) w/ non-hosted domain as "From" email?

  Greetings, I'm trying to understand the safest way to use SMTP. I'm considering purchasing a second virtual server mainly for email sending, on which I will set up PHPlist (a free open-source mailing program), so we have the freedom to send unlimited newsletters (...well, 10,000 per day at least, which requires a VPS rather than shared hosting). Here's my current setup with a paid mass-mailing software: I have a website - let's call it MyHostedDomain.org. I send newsletters with the From / Reply To address as [email protected], which isn't being hosting by me but I have access to the email account. Can I more or less safely set this up with an SMTP server on a VPS? i.e. send messages using [email protected] as the visible address, but having it all go through my VPS SMTP? I cannot authenticate it, right? Is this too risky a practice? Is my only hope to use an address with a domain on the VPS, i.e. [email protected]? I already have a Reverse DNS record for the domain hosted on my current VPS. I also see other suggestions, like SenderID and DKIM. But with all these things combined, will this still work? I don't want to get blacklisted, but the good thing is this is a somewhat private list, and users opt-in to subscribe. So it's a self-made audience. (If it makes you feel better, this is related to a non-profit activity, not some marketing scam...it's for a good cause, I assure you!)

• REMOTE_USER not getting set?

  I am trying to setup LDAP Authentication in Joomla using a plugin called JMapMyLDAP (in fact 4 plugins each doing a different job). I need to pull a part of a string out of the server variable REMOTE_USER and this should be visible (we see here http://timplummer.com.au/4-how-to-integrate-joomla-3-with-active-directory-using-ldap.html) in phpinfo(); The issue is that REMOTE_USER is not set or at least not appearing. A few things to note (if you don't mind) here- conceptually I am not really understanding authentication as a whole subject it appears to be vast despite my years working in websites. Yes I used asp and built php pages to check a user is who they say they are with a token(/session?) that was given to just them and then they are identified when a stateless request is made to the server. Thats my level of understanding. This sounds different to the basic authentication in apache where a password sits in a file and a username and the user needs to login to a basic form to get access to the folder/docs this is via an .htaccess file. Ok so with the LDAP to work I need to get REMOTE_USER this sounds very reasonable as how else do we know is making the request. Thank you.

• Jailkit not locking down SFTP, working for SSH

  I installed jailkit on my CentOS 5.8 server, and configured it according to the online guides that I found. These are the commands that were executed as root: mkdir /var/jail jk_init -j /var/jail extshellplusnet jk_init -j /var/jail sftp adduser testuser; passwd testuser jk_jailuser -j /var/jail testuser I then edited /var/jail/etc/passwd to change the login shell for testuser to be /bin/bash to give them access to a full bash shell via SSH. Next I edited /var/jail/etc/jailkit/jk_lsh.ini to look like the following (not sure if this is correct) [testuser] paths= /usr/bin, /usr/lib/ executables= /usr/bin/scp, /usr/lib/openssh/sftp-server, /usr/bin/sftp The testuser is able to connect via SSH and is limited to only view the chroot jail directory, and is also able to log in via SFTP, however the entire file system is visible and can be traversed. • How is the extra mSATA SSD disk used/configured in a Dell XPS laptop?

  Some machines in the new XPS laptop range from Dell come with a regular, large (500GB+) HDD and an additional 32GB m-SATA SSD. The only detail I can find about this extra drive on the Dell site is this: Store your important files, multimedia and photos with XPS 15’s large hard drive options. To get instant access to your media, choose an optional mSATA solid-state drive (SSD) that can boot up to twice as fast as a regular hard drive and resumes in less than 1 second. I'd like to know more about how this extra drive is set up and used, specifically: Is anything installed on it (e.g. OS files or a boot loader) or is it just used as swap space? Is the m-SATA drive visible as a lettered drive in Windows? (I'd guess not if it's used for swap file only.) Is this unusual configuration likely to cause any problems later down the line - e.g. when upgrading to Windows 8? As usual, Dell's sales team haven't been able to help. If anyone's actually got a Dell machine with this or a similar hard drive set-up and can give a definitive answer rather than speculation I'll accept the answer.

• Scripting around the lack of user:password@domain url functionality in jscript/IE

  I currently have a jscript that runs a php script on a server for me, dead simple. But... I want to be atleast somewhat secure so I setup a login. Now if I use the regular user:password@domain system it won't work (IE decided it was a security issue). And if I let IE just remember the password then it pops up a security message confirming my login every time (which kills the point of the button). So I need a way to make the security message go away. I could lower security settings, which tbh I am fine with but nothing seems to make it fuck off (there might be some registry setting to change). Find a fix for jscript that will let me use a password in the url. There used to be a regedit that worked for older systems which allowed IE to use url passwords (not working on my 64bit windows7 setup) though I doubt that'd have helped jscript anyways (since it outright crashes). Use an app other than IE. Inwhich case I'm not sure how to go about it, I want it to be responsive and invisible so IE was a good choice. It is near instant. Use XMLHttpRequest instead of IE directly? May even be faster but I've no idea if it'd help or just have the same error. Use a completely different approach. • How to perform this Windows 7 permissions change on many files via GUI or command line

  After using my external hard drive on another Windows 7 computer to tweak photos with Windows Live Photo Gallery then upload them to Facebook I found the modified images were now not visible on the original Windows 7 computer. I'm not sure if the things I tried to get it working subsequently changed anything, but I do know this is the sequence of actions that makes the permissions of the modified files match those of the unmodified files: Right click on broken image file, select "Properties" On the "Security" tab press the "Advanced" button In the "Permissions" tab press the "Continue" button with the shield icon on it Tick the box marked "Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent Click the "Remove" button to remove the only current entry "Type: Allow, Name: Administrators (XYZ\Administrators), Permission: Full control, Inherited From: OK on the "Permissions" tab. OK on the "Security" tab. Now this same procedure does not work at the folder level. It results in "access denied" dialogs. I'm looking for some way to perform this exact modification on all the images I edited on the other computer. I'm happy to use the Windows GUI in Explorer or any other included tools. I'm happy to use the Windows command line. I'd prefer not to use a third-party tool since I'd have to be satisfied it's not doing anything else. I'm not looking for a different way to change permissions to other settings to make an external drive full of photos editable on multiple computers. At least not in this question.

• Window too big to fit the screen!

  I'm using Windows 7 on a 8.9' monitor with 1280x768 screen resolution. Using the might of arithmetics, I'm able to determine that my dpi (actually ppi) should be 167. Win7 is really helpful in that it doesn't have to restart to apply new dpi settings, unlike its predecessors (though I'd rather it applies straight away). The problem with small monitors in Windows is that when you come across windows too big to fit the screen, you can't move the title bar far above it. In X window managers I used in the past, you could alt-drag the window to anywhere you want, but in Windows, even if you alt-space and select move, it will automatically push the window back until the title bar is visible. I'm looking for a solution that either: allows me to move window freely without regard to titlebar visibility, or attach a scrollbar to existing window, or EDIT: create virtual desktops that allow me to span windows over 2 desktops, or EDIT 2: allow me to set larger virtual resolution, then pan & scan. EDIT 3: I found some progs that might do some of the above: 1) AltDrag allows me to drag, resize using alt and left/right mouse button. Neat! Best solution so far. 2) GiMeSpace Desktop Extender is supposed to allow me to scroll desktop. Didn't work. The other new version, GiMeSpace Ultimate Taskbar worked, but it destroys my Superbar, replacing it with its map.

• Outlook 2010 IMAP account - send on behalf

  So I was looking for a possibility to manage the mail distribution of online shops, newsfeeds, etc. and have a nice solution via distribution groups aka. alias addresses. In example, I register an account on eBay using "[email protected]" (where org.com is my company obviously). That address is an alias and can be managed on my on-premise mail server setting destination to somebody's mailbox independent from logging on to eBay - in case somebody else shall do the eBay-stuff, I can quick change the destination of that alias :-) So far, so good - and now to the problem: Using Microsoft Outlook 2010 and an IMAP account on our mail server, I cannot figure out how to remove that "on behalf of"-string visible in the from-field when sending a message under that [email protected] address. That's quite a pity, because especially eBay doesn't accept/forward mails not coming from the registered address.. Using other mail clients (e.g. Mozilla Thunderbird), the problem does not occur so I guess it's Outlook specific. I cannot "grant" permission to "send as", because that address is not a mailbox, but rather an alias only. Furthermore, the mail accounts are not Exchange, but IMAP! Does anybody have any other ideas to "remove" that annoying string? Consideration: We have to use Microsoft Outlook for some reason! :-)

• How to fix Truecrypt MBR using Command Prompt or Linux live USB?

  I was playing with TrueCrypt and decided to make a fresh installation of Windows 7 from USB stick. Unfortunately Windows 7 installer: "setup was unable to create a new system partition" My entire HDD has been formatted and is visible as 320GB unallocated space, but no fdisk nor Windows 7 installer nor Windows XP installer could help. (Windows XP doesn't even see the HDD, it sees only USB stick and says "not enough space to install") It may be related to Truecrypt and pre-boot authentification, boot loader and/or MBR. As I don't have optical device I could not have created rescue disk. Right now I need a rescue of some kind, supposingly by erasing/fixing MBR using Linux live USB or using Command Promt. Another approach is to click "repair your comuter" menu from Windows 7 installer then click "restore your computer", then click OK upon error and get access to Command Prompt. Yet another another approach is to start computer without Linux USB I receive this: error:unknown filesystem. grub rescue> Any help would be greatly appreciated as my laptop is kind of not fully operational now. UPDATE: This was asked long time ago, ended up formatting everything (eventually it worked using different bootable USB)...

I've tried to use SQLBuddy instead, but there's exactly the same problem. So, I think, the problem is not in phpMyAdmin but in MySQL, Apache or something. MySQL seems to work if I use command line to access it. Apache & PHP seems to work also, as the login page of phpMyAdmin displays correctly.

• Outlook 2010 search not working after upgrade to windows 8

  After upgrading my computer to Windows 8 Outlook 2010 has stopped displaying search results. Normally you can enter a (part) of a word in the search box on top of the inbox list and it will show you result immediatly. Even mails allready visible on the screen are not found. Somebody familiar with this issue? Update: maybe relevant: I use an Google Apps Pro account. All mail is synced and locally available in Outlook 2010. I did not change this in any way while upgrading, it was working perfectly before. I can scroll through all the e-mails, new mails are coming in as expected. This morning I received two mails from a person by the name of Rosanne. When searching on her name in Outlook it gives me One (1) result, the last mail from today. Update 2: Rebuilding the index seemed to be working. But after another day it stopped working again. No results whatsoever in Outlook search. Rebuilding indexes every day is not an option as it takes several hours. I suspect it has something to do with the fact that I use Google Apps Pro. It acts like a Exchange server to outlook. In indexing options (configuration) I added the directories containg the PST from this service (mail is also synced locally)

• Can I set up arbitrary filesystem redirection in Windows?

  I am sitting in front of a Windows 7 machine that has no drive Q:. Is it possible to arrange for accesses to Q:\somedir to be redirected to an arbitrary location on the existing filesystems (for example, C:\Windows)? I would especially like a "set it and forget it" option, if one exists. I am assuming (although I have not tried it) that it is possible to use SUBST to mount an existing (empty, created for this purpose) folder as drive Q: and then MKLINK /J to create a directory symbolic link from Q:\somedir to wherever I want. However, this approach has a couple of drawbacks that I would like to avoid if possible: The drive Q: will be visible in the system. It is not as clean as I would like (removing the mounted folder will break it; a batch script needs to be manually added to the system startup). Is there a better option? If there is none and I am forced to make compromises, what is the closest I could get to the ideal solution? Assume anything is up for discussion.

• Reverse NAT Setup for Hyper-V on Win 2008 R2

  I'm trying to setup a Linux server behind a Windows Hyper-V host that will help supply some of the services (SSH, HTTPS, etc). However getting RRAS configured for reverse NAT (port forwarding) turned out to be a non trivial task. As a staring point, I tried forwarding port 22 (SSH) to the virtual machine. The virtual machine is on a public interface (i.e.: it also has a visible IP on the same network as the host). On RRAS management console I tried to add a rule, by adding "Local Area Connection" to NAT pool (Public Interface - Enable Nat), and an incoming rule for port 22 - :22. I also tried with the same port enabled on Windows Firewall (and not). The NAT management page tells there are "1 mappings" and "30+ Outbound packets transleted". However all other counters (Inbound packets translated, and respective rejected ones) are always zero. (I'm trying to access the server from an external machine). I can directly access the service if I give the VM's public IP, but not the host's one. Is there a way to enable this on RRAS?
