• HTTP: can GET and POST requests from a same machine come from different IPs?

  I'm pretty sure I remember reading --but cannot find back the links anymore-- about this: on some ISP (including at least one big ISP in the U.S.) it is possible to have a user's GET and POST request appearing to come from different IPs. (note that this is totally programming related, and I'll give an example below) I'm not talking about having your IP adress dynamically change between two requests. I'm talking about this: IP 1: 123.45.67.89 IP 2: 101.22.33.44 The same user makes a GET, then a POST, then a GET again, then a POST again and the servers see this: - GET from IP 1 - POST from IP 2 - GET from IP 1 - POST from IP 2 So altough it's the same user, the webserver sees different IPs for the GET and the POSTs. Surely seen that HTTP is a stateless protocol this is perfectly legit right? I'd like to find back the explanation as to how/why certain ISP have their networks configured such that this may happen. I'm asking because someone asked me to implement the following IP filter and I'm pretty sure it is fundamentally broken code (breaking havoc for at least one major american ISP users). Here's a Java servlet filter that is supposed to protect against some attacks. The reasoning is that: "For any session filter checks that IP address in the request is the same that was used when session was created. So in this case session ID could not be stolen for forming fake sessions." http://www.servletsuite.com/servlets/protectsessionsflt.htm However I'm pretty sure this is inherently broken because there are ISPs where you may see GET and POST coming from different IPs. • Is it possible to write map/reduce jobs for Amazon Elastic MapReduce using .NET?

  Is it possible to write map/reduce jobs for Amazon Elastic MapReduce (http://aws.amazon.com/elasticmapreduce/) using .NET languages? In particular I would like to use C#. Preliminary research suggests not. The above URL's marketing text suggests you have a "choice of Java, Ruby, Perl, Python, PHP, R, or C++", without mentioning .NET languages. This Amazon thread (http://developer.amazonwebservices.com/connect/thread.jspa?messageID=136051 -- "Support for C# / F# map/reducers") explicitly says that "currently Amazon Elastic MapReduce does not support Mono platform or languages such as C# or F#." The above suggests that it can't be done. I'm wondering if there are any workarounds, though. For example, can I modify the Elastic MapReduce machine image for my account, and install Mono on there? An alternative, suggested by Amazon FAQs "Using Other Software Required by Your Jar" (http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/ElasticMapReduce/latest/DeveloperGuide/index.html?CHAP_AdvancedTopics.html) and "How to Use Additional Files and Libraries With the Mapper or Reducer" (http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/ElasticMapReduce/latest/DeveloperGuide/index.html?addl_files.html), is to make the first step of the Map/Reduce job be to install Mono on the local instance. That sounds kind of inefficient, but maybe it could work? Maybe a saner alternative would be to try to forgo the convenience of Elastic MapReduce, and manually set up my own Hadoop cluster on EC2. Then I assume I could install Mono without difficulty.

• Double Click and Resize on an Ipad

  Thanks to the great post at OranLooney.com I was able to get a java/icefaces web-app to resize nicely on the ipad, however the code provided for double click doesn't seem to work without further customization.   I am trying to use HSQLDB as an embedded database in a spring application (for testing). As the target production database is Oracle, I would like to use HSQLDBs Oracle syntax mode feature. In the Spring config I use <jdbc:embedded-database type="HSQL" id="dataSource"> </jdbc:embedded-database> <jdbc:initialize-database data-source="dataSource" enabled="true"> <jdbc:script location="classpath:schema.sql"/> </jdbc:initialize-database> And in schema.sql at the top I wrote: SET DATABASE SQL SYNTAX ORA TRUE; However, when running my test, I get the following error: java.sql.SQLException: Unexpected token: DATABASE in statement [SET DATABASE SQL SYNTAX ORA TRUE] Is this a syntax error or a permissions error or something entirely different? Thanks - also for any pointers that might lead to the answer. Given that HSQL is the Spring default for jdbc:embedded-database and given the target is Oracle, this scenario should actually be very common. However, I found nothing on the Web even touching the issue.

• Glassfish, railo and coldbox - messed up links?

  I am new to ColdFusion and ColdBox (and programming). I tried to setup ColdBox but some of the links in the sample applications are broken. My configuration is a GlassFish v3 installation with the current Railo OSS. I access my site through Apache 2.2.14. So instead of http://127.0.0.1:8080/railo/ I access my environment trough http://railo/. In Railo I have a webroot mapping / to C:/webapps/myproject/. I have copied the current ColdBox 3M4 to C:/webapps/myproject/coldbox. I can access the dashboard through http://railo/coldbox/dashboard/index.cfm and have access to all options. My problems start the moment I try to open the sample gallery: HTTP Status 500 - type Exception report message description The server encountered an internal error () that prevented it from fulfilling this request. exception java.io.FileNotFoundException: C:\webapps\viss-dev\coldbox\samples (Zugriff verweigert) note The full stack traces of the exception and its root causes are available in the GlassFish v3 logs. GlassFish v3 OK, no problem, just enter the link directly: http://railo/coldbox/samples/index.cfm. The site looks plain, who cares - BUT all local links look like this: http://127.0.0.1:8080/coldbox/samples/applications/helloworld/index.cfm (railo is replaced with 127.0.0.1:8080). Looks like trouble. To make my confusion perfect: when I try to access the login app: http://railo/coldbox/samples/applications/sampleloginapp/index.cfm and hit the submit button, I am redirected to this address: http://railo/railo/coldbox/samples/applications/sampleloginapp/index.cfm. I believe that this is not really ColdBox-related, but it manifests itself when I try to use ColdBox, so here I am. P.S.: amazon.de takes too long to ship the ColdBox book :(

  I am migrating my Java,Tomcat, Mysql server to AWS EC2. I have already attached EBS volume for storing MySql data. In my web application people may upload images. So I should persist them. There are 2 alternatives in my mind: Save uploaded images to EBS volume. Use the S3 service. The followings are my notes, please be skeptic about them, as my expertise is not on servers, but software development. EBS plus: S3 storage is more expensive. (0.15 $/Gb 0.1$/Gb) S3 plus: Serving statics from EBS may influence my web server's performance negatively. Is this true? Does Serving images affect server performance notably? For S3 my server will not be responsible for serving statics. S3 plus: Serving statics from EBS may result I/O cost, probably it will be minor. EBS plus: People say EBS is faster. S3 plus: People say S3 is more safe for persistence. EBS plus: No need to learn API, it is straight forward to save the images to EBS volume. Namely I can not decide, will be happy if you guide.   Hey guys, I'm trying to parse an xml file to return a item with a specific id only, but having trouble making it work. here's what I have in php $xml_str = file_get_contents("test.xml"); $xml = simplexml_load_string($xml_str); $albid = $_GET['id']; $nodes = $xml->xpath('//library/book[@id=1]'); foreach($nodes as $node) { echo $node['title'].'<br/>'; } First, the php is not returning anything from the xml file. What would I need to fix to return the data? Also, how would I enter $albid into the xpath so that the id will be retrieved from the link? Any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated. • .Net Remoting: Serialize Object and implementation

  Hi, In my scenario there is a client-side assembly that contains a class (Task). This class implements an interface (ITask) that is known on the server. I'm trying to send a Task object from client to server without copying the assembly of the client manually to the server. If I just serialize the task object, the server obviously complains about the missing assembly. I then tried to serialze typeof(Task).Assembly but could not derserialize it on the server. Next I tried to File.ReadAllBytes(typeof(Task).Assembly.Location) and saved it to a temporary file on the server, which threw an exception on Assembly.LoadFrom(@".\temporary.dll"); Why am I doing this? Java RMI has a neat feature to request the implementation of an object that is received through remoting but is stil "unkown" (this JVM doesn't have the *.class file). This can be used for a compute server that just knows the interface of a "task" containing a run() method and downloads the implementation of this method on demand. This way the server doesn't have to be changed for new tasks. I'm trying to achieve something like this in .Net.

• Issue with 'Hello Android' tutorial

  I am brand new to Eclipse and Android, but somewhat familiar with Java. That having been said, I tried to follow the 'Hello Android' tutorial from the developer site using the latest Eclipse (Galieo) and the 2.1 Android SDK, I am on a Macintosh running Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6). I have a default virtual device (though my target is actually for phones like my own HTC Incredible which has the snapdragon processor and of course all the latest accoutrement in smart phones. Everything seemed to go okay until I went to RUN>RUN and then selected 'Android Application'. My computer spins it's wheels for a while and then I see two errors. • Non-wiki CMS for an online user guide

  For a large web application I'm building, I need to create an extensive user guide. The first thought was a wiki, but what I've seen lacks the ease of customization I've seen in CMSs, and has a lot of extra features I don't need. The number of users editing the document is small and closed, but it needs to be editable by non-technical users. The number of pages will likely be between 50-100. It also needs to be searchable. It would also be a plus if it had nice readable urls to link to from our web app. Right now, my best guess is WordPress, but that seems a lot more geared towards blogging with just a handful of pages, than having several pages, and possibly no blogs. There isn't a language requirement, although we have the most experience with Java and PHP. We aren't looking to have to do any major coding other than customizing for visuals, so hopefully the language will not be too important. Again, I'm not looking for the best general purpose CMS, just something that would be easiest for a user guide.

• Managing Instances in Python

  Hello, I am new to Python and this is my first time asking a stackOverflow question, but a long time reader. I am working on a simple card based game but am having trouble managing instances of my Hand class. If you look below you can see that the hand class is a simple container for cards(which are just int values) and each Player class contains a hand class. However, whenever I create multiple instances of my Player class they all seem to manipulate a single instance of the Hand class. From my experience in C and Java it seems that I am somehow making my Hand class static. If anyone could help with this problem I would appreciate it greatly. • Modify static variables while debugging in Eclipse

  As an extension the the question "Modify/view static variables while debugging in Eclipse", I'd like to be able to modify static variables while debugging in Eclipse. For instance and local variables, I can just choose the variable in the "Variables" view of Eclipse, and use the context menu "Change value..." to change the value. This is not possible for arbitrary static variables, because they do not appear in the "Variables" view. What I tried: If you choose "Java / Show static variables" from the triangle menu in the "Variables" view, you can see and modify static member variables of the variables listed in the "Variables view". However, I did not find how to access a static member of a class whose instance does not appear in the "Variables view". You can of course enter a static member as an expression into the "Expression view" (using fully qualified name). Then you can see the value, but the "Expression view" does not have an option to modify the value (it does allow to modify members of an expression, but not the expression itself, even if the expression is a field). So, if I have a static variable like a boolean MyClass.disableAllBugs, is there a way to change MyClass.disableAllBugs during debugging? As an aside: I realize that even having public mutable static fields (i.e. mutable global variables) is very bad style. But some codebases have it, and then it's sometimes useful to modify it while debugging.

  Hello guys! I subclassed the UIWindow to get the clicks from UIWebView. I used a tutorial for this. Here is the link: Tutorial It is working, but after I've got and other tutorial from the writer where he shows how to highlight the text in UIWebView. Here's the second link. But I can't use this second one. I tried to run this code in the - (void)userDidTapWebView:(id)tapPoint; delegate method. This delegate method is called when I tap in the UIWebView. Maybe somebody can help me to correct the script? I would like to get the tapped anchor's link. I tried many different java script, but until now I couldn't get the tapped anchor's link. One of the tries is when I tried to add a function to document.onClick. But I tap an anchor then it needs a second tap to get the anchor and I can't get the link neither with this method.

• Escaping colons in hibernate createSQLQuery

  I am confused on how I can create an SQL statement containing colons. I am trying to create a view and I am using (notice the double colons): create view MyView as ( SELECT tableA.colA as colA, tableB.colB as colB, round(tableB.colD / 1024)::numeric, 2) as calcValue, FROM tableA, tableB WHERE tableA.colC = 'someValue' ); This is a postgres query and I am forced to use the double colons (::) in order to correctly run the statement. I then pass the above statement through: s.createSQLQuery(myQuery).executeUpdate(); and I get a: Exception in thread "main" org.hibernate.exception.DataException: \ could not execute native bulk manipulation query at org.hibernate.exception.SQLStateConverter.convert(\ SQLStateConverter.java:102) ... more stacktrace... with an output of my above statement changed as (notice the question mark): create view MyView as ( SELECT tableA.colA as colA, tableB.colB as colB, round(tableB.colD / 1024)?, 2) as calcValue, FROM tableA, tableB WHERE tableA.colC = 'someValue' ); Obviously, hibernate confuses my colons with named parameters. Is there a way to escape the colons (a google suggestion that mentions that a single colon is escaped as a double colon does NOT work) or another way of running this statement? Thanks.

• Find all compilation errors in a Delphi project

  I am doing some refactoring of my Delphi project. I want to be able to make a change, then see all the places in the project that break due to that change. Similar to how Eclipse lists all the compile errors for a project (in Java). In Delphi, I can make a change, then recompile my project, but the compiler stops when it finds the first Unit that does not compile. I have to fix that Unit, compile again, which will then show me the next error, etc etc. I want to be able to see all the compile errors in the project at once. Then I can decide if the change is worth doing or not. For example, if the change will require hand fixing of 50 separate source files, it's not worth doing. But if it only breaks 2 files then that's an easy change to make. Is there any way to do this in Delphi? Can I tell the compiler to keep going even after finding a Unit that does not compile? I am using Delphi 2010

• Are Fortran control characters (carriage control) still implemented in compilers?

  In the book Fortran 95/2003 for Scientists and Engineers, there is much talk given to the importance of recognizing that the first column in a format statement is reserved for control characters. I've also seen control characters referred to as carriage control on the internet. To avoid confusion, by control characters, I refer to the characters "1, a blank (i.e. \s), 0, and +" as having an effect on the vertical spacing of output when placed in the first column (character) of a FORMAT statement. Also, see this text-only web page written entirely in fixed-width typeface : Fortran carriage-control (because nothing screams accuracy and antiquity better than prose in monospaced font). I found this page and others like it to be not quite clear. According to Fortran 95/2003 for Scientists and Engineers, failure to recall that the first column is reserved for carriage control can lead to horrible unintended output. Paraphrasing Dave Barry, type the wrong character, and nuclear missiles get fired at Norway. However, when I attempt to adhere to this stern warning, I find that gfortran has no idea what I'm talking about. Allow me to illustrate my point with some example code. It appears that gfortran is completely ignoring the control character column. My question, then, is this: Are control characters still implemented in standards compliant compilers or is gfortran simply not standards compliant? • Using JavaCC to infer semantics from a Composite tree

  Hi all, I am programming (in Java) a very limited symbolic calculus library that manages polynomials, exponentials and expolinomials (sums of elements like "x^n * e^(c x)"). I want the library to be extensible in the sense of new analytic forms (trigonometric, etc.) or new kinds of operations (logarithm, domain transformations, etc.), so a Composite pattern that represent the syntactic structure of an expression, together with a bunch of Visitors for the operations, does the job quite well. My problem arise when I try to implement operations that depends on the semantics more than on the syntax of the Expression (like integrals, for instance: there are a lot of resolution methods for specific classes of functions, but these same classes can be represented with more than a single syntax). So I thought I need something to "parse" the Composite tree to infer its semantics in order to invoke the right integration method (if any). Someone pointed me to JavaCC, but all the examples I've seen deal only with string parsing; so, I don't know if I'm digging in the right direction. Some suggestions? (I hope to have been clear enough!)

• What is the best URL strategy to handle multiple search parameters and operators?

  Searching with mutltiple Parameters In my app I would like to allow the user to do complex searches based on several parameters, using a simple syntax similar to the GMail functionality when a user can search for "in:inbox is:unread" etc. However, GMail does a POST with this information and I would like the form to be a GET so that the information is in the URL of the search results page. Therefore I need the parameters to be formatted in the URL. Requirements: Keep the URL as clean as possible Avoid the use of invalid URL chars such as square brackets Allow lots of search functionality Have the ability to add more functions later. I know StackOverflow allows the user to search by multiple tags in this way: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/c+sql However, I'd like to also allow users to search with multiple additional parameters. Initial Design My design is currently to do use URLs such as these: http://example.com/search/tagged/c+sql/searchterm/transactions http://example.com/search/searchterm/transactions http://example.com/search/tagged/c+sql http://example.com/search/tagged/c+sql/not-tagged/java http://example.com/search/tagged/c+sql/created/yesterday http://example.com/search/created_by/user1234 I intend to parse the URL after the search parameter, then decide how to construct my search query. Has anyone seen URL parameters like this implemented well on a website? If so, which do it best?

• C# connect to domain SQL Server 2005 from non-domain machine

  Hi, I asked a question a few days ago (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2795723/access-to-sql-server-2005-from-a-non-domain-machine-using-windows-authentication) which got some interesting, but not usable suggestions. I'd like to ask the question again, but make clear what my constraints are: I have a Windows domain within which a machine is running SQL Server 2005 and which is configured to support only Windows authentication. I would like to run a C# client application on a machine on the same network, but which is NOT on the domain, and access a database on the SQL Server 2005 instance. I CANNOT create or modify OS or SQL Server users on either machine, and I CANNOT make any changes to permissions or impersonation, and I CANNOT make use of runas. I know that I can write Perl and Java applications that can connect to the SQL Server database using only these four parameters: server name, database name, username (in the form domain\user), and password. In C# I have tried various things around: string connectionString = "Data Source=server;Initial Catalog=database;User Id=domain\user;Password=password"; SqlConnection connection = new SqlConnection(connectionString); connection.Open(); and tried setting integrated security to true and false, but nothing seems to work. Is what I am trying to do simply impossible in C#? Thanks for any help, Martin
