If they are non-technical and have no understanding of programming, how would you go about showing what the system will do and how it will do it? I guess some sort of visual representation of the system but this seems very patronising to me.

After the user makes some selection and hits the "run" button I pass off the processing to a dll written in C# but what I want is a way to periodically send information back to the client so they can see what's going on like how many records have been processed and things like that.     I've got a drop-down where the user selects a Country. It is a required "field". Next to it, there is a textfield named State. If the user selects US, then the field State is required. If the user selects e.g. Sweden, the State is not required, since Sweden has no states.
