• Can Ubuntu create a semi-transparent subtitle player for accessibility?

  I've asked this in Reddit.com/r/Ubuntu in here. I've tried to get the Subtitle Player linked here to work and it have failed on Wine. So I'm curious if Ubuntu community would be willing to try and build a simple transparent subtitle player for better accessibility on Flash Player, Netflix, or even in movie theaters? Currently, I'm watching movies/videos with an Android Tablet that runs on a blank black video for 3 hours with a subtitle overlay on it so I can enjoy movie and so forth, but it requires a bit of effort and it definitely isn't for everyone. (People will have to look at the subtitle playing tablet and the movie back and forth at 60 degrees angle, while a transparent subtitle player would reduce it to 5 degrees angle to watch the movie.) • Puppet: Making Windows Awesome Since 2011

It has the heaviest investment on Windows infrastructure with 1/3 of the platform client development staff being Windows folks.  It appears that Microsoft believed an end state configuration tool like Puppet was the way forward, so much so that they cloned Puppet’s DSL (domain-specific language) in many ways and are calling it PowerShell DSC. Puppet Labs is pushing the envelope on Windows. Here are several things to note: Puppet x64 Ruby support for Windows coming in v3.7.0. An awesome ACL module (with order, SIDs and very granular control of permissions it is best of any CM). A wealth of modules that work with Windows on the Forge (and more on GitHub). Documentation solely for Windows folks - https://docs.puppetlabs.com/windows. Some of the common learning points with Puppet on Windows user are noted in this recent blog post. Microsoft OpenTech supports Puppet. Azure has the ability to deploy a Puppet Master (http://puppetlabs.com/solutions/microsoft). At Microsoft //Build 2014 in the Day 2 Keynote Puppet Labs CEO Luke Kanies co-presented with Mark Russonivich (http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/Build/2014/KEY02  fast forward to 19:30)! Puppet has a Visual Studio Plugin! It can be overwhelming learning a new tool like Puppet at first, but Puppet Labs has some resources to help you on that path. Take a look at the Learning VM, which has a quest-based learning tool. For real-time questions, feel free to drop onto #puppet on freenode.net (yes, some folks still use IRC) with questions, and #puppet-dev with thoughts/feedback on the language itself. You can subscribe to puppet-users / puppet-dev mailing lists. There is also ask.puppetlabs.com for questions and Server Fault if you want to go to a Stack Exchange site. There are books written on learning Puppet. There are even Puppet User Groups (PUGs) and other community resources! Puppet does take some time to learn, but with anything you need to learn, you need to weigh the benefits versus the ramp up time. I learned NHibernate once, it had a very high ramp time back then but was the only game on the street. Puppet’s ramp up time is considerably less than that. The advantage is that you are learning a DSL, and it can apply to multiple platforms (Linux, Windows, OS X, etc.) with the same Puppet resource constructs. As you learn Puppet you may wonder why it has a DSL instead of just leveraging the language of Ruby (or maybe this is one of those things that keeps you up wondering at night). I like the DSL over a small layer on top of Ruby. It allows the Puppet language to be portable and go more places. It makes you think about the end state of what you want to achieve in a declarative sense instead of in an imperative sense. You may also find that right now Puppet doesn’t run manifests (scripts) in order of the way resources are specified. This is the number one learning point for most folks. As a long time consternation of some folks about Puppet, manifest ordering was not possible in the past. In fact it might be why some other CMs exist! As of 3.3.0, Puppet can do manifest ordering, and it will be the default in Puppet 4. http://puppetlabs.com/blog/introducing-manifest-ordered-resources You may have caught earlier that I mentioned PowerShell DSC. But what about DSC? Shouldn’t that be what Windows users want to choose? Other CMs are integrating with DSC, will Puppet follow suit and integrate with DSC? The biggest concern that I have with DSC is it’s lack of visibility in fine-grained reporting of changes (which Puppet has). The other is that it is a very young Microsoft product (pre version 3, you know what they say :) ). I tried getting it working in December and ran into some issues. I’m hoping that newer releases are there that actually work, it does have some promising capabilities, it just doesn’t quite come up to the standard of something that should be used in production. In contrast Puppet is almost a ten year old language with an active community! It’s very stable, and when trusting your business to configuration management, you want something that has been around awhile and has been proven. Give DSC another couple of releases and you might see more folks integrating with it. That said there may be a future with DSC integration. Portability and fine-grained reporting of configuration changes are reasons to take a closer look at Puppet on Windows. Yes, Puppet on Windows is here to stay and it’s continually getting better folks.

• New Year, New Position, New Opportunity and Adventures!

  2010 was an incredible year of change for me. On the personal side, we celebrated our youngest daughter’s first birthday and welcomed my oldest daughter into our family (both my girls are adopted). Professionally, I put on the first ever Prairie Developer Conference, the 3rd annual Winnipeg Code Camp, the Software Development and Evolution Conference, continued to build the technology community in Winnipeg, was awarded a Microsoft MVP award for the 4th year, created a certification program to help my employer, Protegra, attain Microsoft Partner status, and had great project work throughout the year. So now its 2011, and I’m looking ahead to new challenges and opportunities with a new employer. Starting in mid February I’ll be the Microsoft Practice Lead with Online Business Systems, a Microsoft partner here in Winnipeg! I’m very excited about working with such great people and helping continue delivering quality solutions and consulting that the organization has become known for. 2010 was great, but 2011 is shaping up to be a banner year both personally and professionally!

• Switching from Visual Studio to Eclipse [closed]

  I've been using Visual Studio for about 6 years now, which is enough time to know most useful keyboard shortcuts and little features. I recently had to switch to Eclipse and java for school, and now I'm constantly searching for the right keys to press. I have searched around for a definitve guide on this, but I couldn't find any. Here's what I want to know: For any feature in Visual Studio, what is the equivalent feature in Eclipse called and what is it's default keyboard shortcut? Are there any things that work very differently in Eclipse, that one might misunderstand or do wrong at first when switching? Are there features in Visual Studio that Eclipse does not have, and is there a workaround? I hope we can create a guide to make life easier for future developers that have to make this switch. You can answer any of the three questions above (no need to do all three), and multiple per answer if you want. I can't mark questions as community wiki anymore, but I do think that's appropriate here.

• Macbook Pro 8,1 - wireless interface not showing up

  I've installed Ubuntu 11.10 on my Macbook Pro 8,1. Everything went fine and everything installs fine except for the wireless interface. I've installed the b43 module according to these instructions: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro8-1/Natty#Wireless I've tried compiling the module, ndiswrapper and also the last solution mentioned using this PPA: ppa:zwaldowski/ppa. With the three solutions, the module loads finely. It works smoothly. lspci shows the wireless card without problem. But there is no wireless interface. iwconfig or ifconfig both show eth0 and lo as interfaces, but no eth1 or wlan0 interface is showing up. I have no idea why, and I'm completely stuck there.

  I'm a computer science grad student at UCLA specializing in security and/or mobile devices. I'm looking for ideas for my M.S. Project. Something with research and experimenting or testing. I have a few in mind, just wondering if the community has some good thoughts. I'm currently working on a project that deals with offload security related operations to a grid-powered/cloud server to improve battery life on phones or tablets, aka Security-Aware software on mobile devices. I might be able to expand on this for my project... but I'm open to any new types of ideas. I have another idea about secure communications with a peer-2-peer ad-hoc network, but its seems a little dull. Hope this questions is not off topic for this StackExchange. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas.

• Setting up SANED with sane-test

  I'm trying to setup a network service for running saned (running the sane-test backend) on Ubuntu 12.10, running it on a virtualbox. I followed the directions found here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ScanningHowTo and i got to the point where if i use a front-end like xsane, or use the command scanimage -d test i get the desired behaviour. (i get the test image). But when i try to use the network demon to access the backend (from the localhost) i get Failed to connect. I used telnet on 127.0.0.1 6566 and i got the following error: saned: symbol lookup error: saned: undefined symbol: sanei_w_init I'm a linux newbie, so i could be making some stupid mistake. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks [update]After posting this question i logged out, logged back in and it worked. After a few days i tried again and it gave the same error as before. Any help?

• Scripting a sophisticated RTS AI with Lua

  I'm planning to develop a somewhat sophisticated RTS AI (eg see BWAPI). have experience programming, but none in game development, so it seems easiest to start by scripting the AI of an existing game I've played, Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War (2004). As far as I can tell, the game AI is scripted with some variant of Lua (by the file extension .ai or .scar). The online documentation is sparse and the community isn't active anymore. I'd like to get some idea of the difficulty of this undertaking. Is it practical with a scripting language like Lua to develop a RTS AI that includes FSMs, decision trees, case-based reasoning, and transposition tables? If someone has any experience scripting Dawn of War, that would also help.

• New Replication, Optimizer and High Availability features in MySQL 5.6.5!

  As the Product Manager for the MySQL database it is always great to announce when the MySQL Engineering team delivers another great product release.  As a field DBA and developer it is even better when that release contains improvements and innovation that I know will help those currently using MySQL for apps that range from modest intranet sites to the most highly trafficked web sites on the web.  That said, it is my pleasure to take my hat off to MySQL Engineering for today's release of the MySQL 5.6.5 Development Milestone Release ("DMR"). The new highlighted features in MySQL 5.6.5 are discussed here: New Self-Healing Replication ClustersThe 5.6.5 DMR improves MySQL Replication by adding Global Transaction Ids and automated utilities for self-healing Replication clusters.  Prior to 5.6.5 this has been somewhat of a pain point for MySQL users with most developing custom solutions or looking to costly, complex third-party solutions for these capabilities.  With 5.6.5 these shackles are all but removed by a solution that is included with the GPL version of the database and supporting GPL tools.  You can learn all about the details of the great, problem solving Replication features in MySQL 5.6 in Mat Keep's Developer Zone article.  New Replication Administration and Failover UtilitiesAs mentioned above, the new Replication features, Global Transaction Ids specifically, are now supported by a set of automated GPL utilities that leverage the new GTIDs to provide administration and manual or auto failover to the most up to date slave (that is the default, but user configurable if needed) in the event of a master failure. The new utilities, along with links to Engineering related blogs, are discussed in detail in the DevZone Article noted above. Better Query Optimization and ThroughputThe MySQL Optimizer team continues to amaze with the latest round of improvements in 5.6.5. Along with much refactoring of the legacy code base, the Optimizer team has improved complex query optimization and throughput by adding these functional improvements: Subquery Optimizations - Subqueries are now included in the Optimizer path for runtime optimization.  Better throughput of nested queries enables application developers to simplify and consolidate multiple queries and result sets into a single unit or work. Optimizer now uses CURRENT_TIMESTAMP as default for DATETIME columns - For simplification, this eliminates the need for application developers to assign this value when a column of this type is blank by default. Optimizations for Range based queries - Optimizer now uses ready statistics vs Index based scans for queries with multiple range values. Optimizations for queries using filesort and ORDER BY.  Optimization criteria/decision on execution method is done now at optimization vs parsing stage. Print EXPLAIN in JSON format for hierarchical readability and Enterprise tool consumption. • How can I de-install a Perl module installed via `cpan`?

  I am using Perl running in user space (not installed via root) and installing modules via the command-line cpan. I would like to know if there is a simple way to remove a module without having to do a lot of work deleting individual files. I searched for this question on the internet and found some answers, but the answers I've found seem to either discuss using the Perl package manager (specific for Microsoft Windows), otherwise operating-system specific (BSDpan), suggesting using cpanplus (which I've had several bad experiences with), or ended by pointing to a dead link as follows: http://www.cpan.org/misc/cpan-faq.html#How_delete_Perl_modules. My question is specifically whether there is a clean way to remove a module installed via cpan.

• LiveCD does not work on my desktop

  I've installed Oneiric on my laptop without any issue using the LiveCD downloaded here (from the French Ubuntu community server). But on my desktop, weird things happen: During the 1st try booting with the LiveCD on my desktop, my 2 year old child just hit the keyboard, and after several error messages the desktop loaded and I've been able to test Oneiric. But I wanted to redo a boot before installing Oneiric to avoid mistakes. So during the 2nd time I tried to boot with the LiveCD, I couldn't access to the point where I can choose to test or install. Before trying a 3rd time, I've "cleaned the system" from System Parameter System. But after that I'm still not able to access to the point where I can choose to test or install. Now it stops all the time on a black screen. I do not understand why several boot attempts with same CD have several results. So I wonder if the state of my current installation 11.04 can affect re-booting with my CD 11.10 ?

• 3rd Party Document Management Service

  I am developing an asp.net application that requires users to upload/view various documents. Rather then reinvent the wheel I was thinking about using a 3rd party service like Scribd to handle these documents and integrate it into my app via their API; I really like their ipaper viewer too. My concern is some of these documents will be sensitive data. Even though Scribd's FAQ says they are equipped to handle sensitive information, I am a little hesitant to trust an unpaid service that lacks an SLA. Has anyone used Scribd successfully for a similar task? Or can anyone recommend a better document management service?

• Return a pointer to a char array in C

  I've seen a lot of questions on that on StackOverflow, but reading the answers did not clear that up for me, probably because I'm a total newbie in C programming. Here's the code: #include <stdio.h> char* squeeze(char s[], char c); main() { printf("%s", squeeze("hello", 'o')); } char* squeeze(char s[], char c) { int i, j; for(i = j = 0; s[i] != '\0'; i++) if(s[i] != c) s[j++] = s[i]; s[j] = '\0'; return s; } It compiles and I get segmentation fault when I run it. I've read this faq about about returning arrays and tried the 'static' technique that is suggested there, but still could not get the program working. Could anyone point out exactly what's wrong with it and what should I be paying attention in the future?
