  • Why does MySQL autoincrement increase on failed inserts?

    A co-worker just made me aware of a very strange MySQL behavior. Assuming you have a table with an auto_increment field and another field that is set to unique (e.g. a username-field). When trying to insert a row with a username thats already in the table the insert fails, as expected. Yet the auto_increment value is increased as can be seen when you insert a valid new entry after several failed attempts. For example, when our last entry looks like this... ID: 10 Username: myname ...and we try five new entries with the same username value on our next insert we will have created a new row like so: ID: 16 Username: mynewname While this is not a big problem in itself it seems like a very silly attack vector to kill a table by flooding it with failed insert requests, as the MySQL Reference Manual states: "The behavior of the auto-increment mechanism is not defined if [...] the value becomes bigger than the maximum integer that can be stored in the specified integer type." Is this expected behavior?

    I made a view-based project from a fresh template. There's a UIViewController which is created with an XIB. In the implementation I uncommented that and added an NSLog.     I've followed the SearchManager documentation yet am still having trouble making one of my app's activities searchable.   • REST API - why use PUT DELETE POST GET?

    So -i was looking through some articles on creating REST API's. And some of them suggest using all types of HTTP requests: like PUT DELETE POST GET. So - we would create for example index.php and write API this way: $method = $_SERVER['REQUEST_METHOD']; $request = split("/", substr(@$_SERVER['PATH_INFO'], 1)); switch ($method) { case 'PUT': ....some put action.... break; case 'POST': ....some post action.... break; case 'GET': ....some get action.... break; case 'DELETE': ....some delete action.... break; } Ok - granted - I don't know much baout web services (yet). But - wouldn't it be easier to just accept JSON object through normal $_POST and then respond in JSON as well. We can easily serialize/deserialize via php's json_encode and json_decode and do whatever we want with that data without having to deal with different HTTP request methods... Am I missing something? UPDATE 1: Ok - after digging through various API's and learning a lot about XML-RPC, JSON-RPC, SOAP, REST I came to a conclusion that this type of API is sound. Actually stack exchange is pretty much using this approach on their sites and I do think that these people know what they are doing Stack Exchange API.

  • Why are nanosleep() and usleep() too slow?

    I have a program that generates packets to send to a receiver. I need an efficient method of introducing a small delay between the sending of each packet so as not to overrun the receiver. I've tried usleep() and nanosleep() but they seem to be too slow. I've implemented a busy wait loop and had more success, but it's not the most efficient method, I know. I'm interested in anyone's experiences in trying to do what I'm doing. Do others find usleep() and nanosleep() to function well for this type of application? Thanks, Danny Llewallyn

    hi, im wondering how wmd is supposed to work, when i type in the textarea the text doesnt have html, but once the text is stored in db it turns to html. wmd also shows all this html when reloading the content? is it supposed to work like this? Do I have to sanitize the text before its put into the db? if so how? I thought wmd doesnt deal with html? except in code blocks. Also there are p tags being added Using the beneath html it gets added directly.     I have a password validation script in PHP that checks a few different regular expressions, and throws a unique error message depending on which one fails. Here is an array of the regular expressions and the error messages that are thrown if the match fails: array( 'rule1' => array( '/^.*[\d].*$/i', 'Password must contain at least one number.' ), 'rule2' => array( '/^.*[a-z].*$/i', 'Password must contain at least one lowercase letter' ), 'rule3' => array( '/^.*[A-Z].*$/i', 'Password must contain at least one uppercase letter' ), 'rule4' => array( '/^.*[~!@#$%^&*()_+=].*$/i', 'Password must contain at least one special character [~!@#$%^&*()_+=]' ) ); For some reason, no matter what I pass through the validation, the "Special Characters" rule fails. I'm guessing it's a problem with the expression. If there's a better (or correct) way to write these expressions, I'm all ears!

  • Cocoa Touch: Why doesn't UINavigationController render 'Back' button?

    When I push a view controller it animates properly and slides in, the only problem is that no 'Back' button is rendered up top.The back button is still there, I can still tap it, it just doesn't render on the screen. This behavior is identical in both the simulator and on multiple devices. Is this a known issue or bug? Using 3.1.3 of the iPhone SDK. More information: It renders it for further levels, just not on the second level of nav controller. So Main Page (No back button - OK). Second level page (back button, but doesn't render - not OK). Third level page (Back button there and rendering - OK).

  • Why does SQL Server keep throwing exceptions?

    I have my project in .NET that uses a database in SQL Server. I'm using Linq-to-SQL, sometimes when the project throws me an exception (Constraint) in a part of the project this same error keeps showing in other part of the project when I do another thing with the database. Like when I do an insertion and I had before an exception on delete the insertion throws me the delete exception, and it remains this way until I close and open again the project. My major problem is when this happen in my online project, this error in my project causes me problems in the project I'm testing online (I use the same database). I don't know if this exception is on the memory or something but its have been causing me a lot of headaches.

  • How to know why an animation stutters?

    I have a few fairly simple animations (moving text around, moving ellipses etc.) and running in full screen (1920x1080 minus the task bar) the WPF Performance Suite reports a good framerate around 50 FPS throughout the animation. Dirty Rect Addition is somewhere around 300 rect/s, the SW frames are between 0 and 4 and the HW frames are between 3 and 5. Video memory usage is around 80 MB. Problem is that the animations stutters every other half second. My machine is a new Dell laptop XPS 15 with the GeForce GT 435 with 2GB memory. - The drivers are up to date. (The same behavior occurs on my netbook (in full screen) as well so I don't think it is hardware related.) If I make the window smaller the stutter goes away. The stutter occurs with the simplest of animations - even with just a couple of elements but adding more elements certainly makes it more noticeable. How can I find out what causes this stutter? When I think of it, I have not actually seen any WPF animations which run smoothly in full screen. Is this even possible?

That is, do I need to check if nWritten < 0 and handle that, or can I safely assume that there won't be a problem? Under which circumstances can it return -1? The documentation more or less just states "If the function fails". In one place I've read that it will fail if it can't match the arguments (i.e. the formatting string to the varargs) but that doesn't worry me. I'm also not worried about buffer overrun in this case - I know the buffer is big enough.
