• Cannot boot from windows 7 DVD

  Hi All, I have just purchased windows 7 64bit. I entered the disk in the drive and it told me I couldn't upgrade as I am using XP so I have tried to boot from CD instead but it doesn't work. It seems to look at the disk for a few seconds and then ends up at a screen saying windows failed to start and then I hit enter and it loads windows XP again. Does anyone know what could cause this? • Removing QWERTY Keyboard Layout Permanently

  Following the instructions in this thread, I added the Dvorak layout to the Regional and Language Options control panel, set it as the default keyboard layout and removed the US (QWERTY) layout. However, even though I removed the QWERTY layout, it still appears in my language bar, and my system defaults to it in every new window. This persists after a log-out/log-in and even a system restart. How do I remove the QWERTY keyboard layout from my system permanently? Alternatively (if outright removing QWERTY is just impossible), can I get Windows to default to Dvorak instead of QWERTY for new windows?

• Can't add German as input language in Windows XP

  I have a laptop that was brought to a computer shop for a hard disk problem. They replaced the disk and reinstalled windows XP, although the English version (the laptop has a German keyboard). I'd like to switch the input language to German. Usually I know how to do this (via "Regional and Language Options"), the problem is when I choose Languages/Details/Add... it doesn't offer me the German keyboard layout: It also uses the "Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard" driver - the laptop's keyboard is a 104/105 key German version. I can't seem to change this. Did I just miss the setting, or what is going on here?

• Inverted question mark only on Microsoft Office applications

  My dad has a notebook and the key which has the "/?°" symbols acts like ctrl. Known factory problem. Anyway, his keyboard also has a "?" marked under the "w" key. Pressing ctrl + alt + w will display the "?" character (question, interrogation mark). Except on Office applications, like Word and Outlook, which will output "¿". I've searched Word and Outlook menus looking for a parameter that could be, somehow, remapping the notebooks keyboards, applying different regional configurations, language, or encodings. Since it only happens on Office apps, I believe the solution is within its options, but I was unable to find it where. Pressing ctrl + alt gr + w will display ? correctly, but I am stumped by this problem. I could remap the keys and make "/?° behave correctly, but my curiosity now is eating me alive. Why only on Office?

• Developing web application with time zones support

  When you develop web application you should know that client PCs can be located anywhere on earth. Even if you develop app just for your country users you should remember it (in Russia now we have 9 time zones, before 28 of March we had 11 time zones). On big sites with many members do it very easy – you can place field “time zone” in member profile, in Sharepoint I saw this solution, and many enterprise app do it like this. But if we have simple website with blog publications or website with news and we don’t have member profiles on server, how we can support user’s time zones? I thought about this question because I wanted to develop time zone support on my own site. My case is ASP.NET MVC app and MS SQL Server DB. First, I started from learning which params we have at HTTP headers, but it doesn’t have information about it. So we can’t use regional settings and methods DateTime.ToLocalTime and DateTime.ToUniversalTime until we get user time zone on server. If we used our app before without time zones support we need to change dates from local time zone to UTC time zone (something like Greenwich Mean Time). • So long and thanks for the fish&hellip;

  This marks my last post as a SQLPASS Board member.  I learned a lot during my year of service and I thank everyone involved for this opportunity.  I would especially like to thank the Chapter leaders and Regional Mentors for Virtual Chapters who (mostly) patiently taught me about Virtual Chapters.   I hope the changes I put in place will help strengthen and grow VCs and PASS going forward.  I would also like to thank every one who encouraged me to reach beyond my comfort zone and accept a leadership position within the PASS organization.  My overall principle was to be a good steward of the PASS community.  Could I have done more?  Always. Did I do enough?  I hope so.  But PASS is a volunteer organization and my time, like yours, is limited.  I have other obligations in life that supersede PASS.  Now I have more time for some of those.  I won’t be going away or leaving the SQL Community.  I will still contribute to the community and support PASS, just in a different role.  Time to let somebody else enjoy the hot seat for a while. Finally, everyone who voted (not just for me) deserves a thanks.  More voters and more engaged voters, strong candidates, and a vigorous debate were all I wanted out of declaring as a candidate last year. This year the SQL community got exactly that. Thank you..

• Code Bubbles: Disruption comes to the IDE

  If you’re like me, you might see the open source Eclipse IDE as a copy or, more generously, a port of the Microsoft’s Visual Studio for the non-.NET world.  It’s not that Microsoft invented the IDE (I would credit Borland with that), but they really took the idea and ran with it for the first version of Visual Studio .NET in 2002.  The question is whether someone outside of Microsoft could take the modern IDE yet another major step forward in both principle and productivity. I think that has actually happened already, and I think the innovator in question is a second-year Computer Science PhD student at Brown, named Andrew Bragdon.  His project, which he calls Code Bubbles, is an IDE that allows for editing, debugging and exploration of code in “bubbles” which remind me a little bit of the discrete note tiles on OneNote…but they’re much more than that.  Bubbles actually allow for call stack traversal, saved debug sessions, sophisticated breakpoint and value watch behaviors and more.  And because bubbles, unlike windows, are borderless, and focus on code fragments rather than whole files, the de-cluttering effect is unbelievably liberating.  The best way to understand what Code Bubbles does is to watch the screencast video:     Code Bubbles is an IDE for Java development.  Why didn’t Microsoft come up with something like this for .NET devs?  Between the existing features in Visual Studio 2010, its WPF code editor, and the fact that OneNote’s UI bears some affinity to Code Bubbles’, it’s interesting that Microsoft still has not thought outside of its own “box” to get us something like this. Heck, that’s easy for me to say.  But it’s easy for you to say that you’d like something like this in Visual Studio sometime soon.  That’s because the ASP.NET site within UserVoice is taking votes on this very issue.  Just click this link and vote! • Whew.... what a week!

  Last week was a busy week for the UPK and Tutor teams at Oracle. It started with the the Collaborate Conference in Las Vegas and ended with our first UPK and Tutor Customer Advisory Board (CAB) meeting at Oracle HQ. The Collaborate Conference is a yearly event sponsored by three of the largest Oracle User Groups. • Oracle Applications User Group (OAUG) • Independent Oracle User Group (IOUG) • Quest - International User Group The User Groups are completely user run organizations with Oracle participation. If you've never attended a conference, time to start planning for the 2011 event in Orlando! If that's out of your reach, there are many regional and industry user groups that meet on a regular basis. They offer a great way to get involved, network with other users, and increase your knowledge around the Oracle applications. For a list of groups near you, check out the Oracle User Group Center. I'll add that the biggest meeting of Oracle users is at the Oracle Open World Conference in San Francisco in September, where we will have many UPK & Tutor focused development and customer sessions. More information on Oracle Open World will be forthcoming over the next few months. We hope to see many of you there! The CAB was a first for the UPK and Tutor team. Although we speak with customers regularly, this gave us an opportunity to meet in a more formal setting to discuss industry trends, business issues, and the direction of the products. Members serve a 2 year term and are required to attend 2 meetings per year, one in person, one via phone. We have some tweaking to do to our meeting format (most members wanted it to be longer!), but the overwhelming consensus was that it was a great success. There were many experiences and ideas shared and the wheels of the UPK and Tutor Development teams have been turning ever since. I'm sure you will see some of these discussions result in new product features over time. What a great week!

• Macedonian Code Camp 2011

  Autumn was filled with lot of conferences, events, speaking engagements and many interesting happenings in Skopje, Macedonia. First at October 20, I was speaking at Microsoft Vizija 9 on topic ASP.NET MVC3 and Razor. One week ago, November 15 I was speaking for first time on topic not related to web development (but still deployment of web apps was part of the demos) on topic “Cloud Computing – Windows Azure” at Microsoft BizSpark Bootcamp. The next event, which is the biggest event by the number of visitors and number of tracks is the Code Camp 2011 event. After we opened the registrations for the event, we sold out (free) 600 tickets in the first 15 hours! We all got astonished by the extremely big number of responses we’ve got… In this event, I can freely say that we expect about 700 attendees to come, and we already have 900+ registered. The event will be held at Saturday, 26 November 2011. At Code Camp 2011, I will speak on topic ASP.NET MVC Best Practices. There are many interesting things to say on this presentation, I will mainly focus on Tips, Tricks, Guidelines and other Practices that I have been using in real-life projects developed by using ASP.NET MVC Framework, with special focus on ASP.NET MVC3 and the next release, ASP.NET MVC4 Developer Preview. There are big number of known local and regional speakers, including 7 MVPs. • IASA ITARC &ndash; Denver May 6th

  The Denver chapter of the International Association of Software Architects (IASA) is holding an IT Architect Regional Conference (ITARC) in Denver on May 6th. The speaker list for this conference is amazing. Paul Rayner, Dave McComb, Randy Kahle, Peter Provost, Randy Stafford, George Fairbanks – all great speakers, and from Colorado. Brandon Satrom (who also happens to be the president of the IASA Austin chapter) will also be speaking, as will some other heavy hitters (for example, Ted Farrell, Chief Architect and Senior VP of Oracle). This is an amazing line-up, and the conference is quite reasonably priced ($150 for IASA members until April 10th, including a catered lunch). I also have the privilege of being a presenter at this conference. If you’ve ever heard any of the previously named speakers, you know that they set the bar quite high. Sounds like I’m going to have to step up my game. What I get to talk about is really cool stuff. The company I work for – Colorado CustomWare – brought me on board nearly two years ago. To say there was some technical debt is somewhat… understated. Equally understated would be that management is committed to doing the right thing. Over the past two years, we’ve done significant architectural refactoring – including an effort that took the entire team offline for most of a month. We’ve reduced the application size by 50% without losing functionality. As you can imagine, this has reduced the complexity of the application, making development faster and less prone to bugs. We’ve made many other changes – moving to an agile process, training developers, moving towards a more OO architecture. The changes we’ve made reveal, in some ways, just how far afield we were.. and there are still more changes to be made. Amazingly enough, our leadership team is eager for me to share these experiences with other architects. I’m really looking forward to being able to do so.

• Oracle Brings Analytics to Project Management

  Excerpt from PROFIT - ORACLE - by Alison Weiss  Nonprofit and for-profit organizations have many differences, but there is one way they are alike—managers struggle with huge amounts of data generated every day. Project data by itself has limited use—but any organization that can gain insight to make accurate predictions or to use resources more effectively can gain an operational advantage. Oracle’s Primavera P6 Analytics 2.0 business intelligence solution enables organizations using Oracle’s Primavera P6 Professional Project Management to do just that: identify critical issues and uncover trends in stores of project data. Primavera P6 Analytics provides management with the ability to look at not only how a single effort is progressing, but also how the entire organization is doing from a project perspective. The latest release includes new features that make it even easier to gather and analyze critical information. For example, the addition of geocoding gives Primavera P6 Analytics users the ability to track resources geographically on longitude and latitude and use a map to get an overall view of how projects, programs, and activities are deployed. “A nonprofit with relief projects in Vietnam, for example, can drill down to the project and get a world view and a regional view,” says Yasser Mahmud, vice president of product strategy and industry marketing in Oracle’s Primavera Global Business Unit. “Then they can drill down further to show statistics; key performance indicators; and how that program, portfolio, or project work is actually getting done.” The addition of new mobile capabilities to Primavera P6 Analytics puts deep-dive analysis into project managers’ hands with compatibility with major tablet operating systems. Now, nonprofits or for-profits working in remote locations can provide real-time visibility into projects to alert management if issues are occurring that need to be addressed immediately. “Primavera P6 Analytics generates information that can help organizations improve their utilization and trim down overall operating costs,” says Mahmud. “But more importantly, it gives organizations improved visibility.”

• Best ways to collect location-based user input

  I'm working on a website where users will be able to register and provide information about their location. In order to prevent users from inputting incorrect data, we don't want users to provide free-text information but instead choose from predefined values as much as possible. We believe there are 2 ways of providing those values: use an API to an external service provider or create your own local database. APIs Some resources: - https://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/ads-api/get-autocomplete-data/ - http://developer.yahoo.com/geo/geoplanet/ Pros: -accuracy and completeness of data. -no maintenance related to update of data as this it taken care of by API provider. -easier/faster to get started (no need to create local database, just implement API). Cons: -degradation of performance when availability issues with external API. -outage due to changes to the external API (until your code is updated to reflect those changes). -lock-in with external provider. Local database Some resources: - http://developer.yahoo.com/geo/geoplanet/data/ - http://www.maxmind.com/app/geolitecity - http://download.geonames.org/export/dump/ Pros: -no external dependency: improved stability and performance. Cons: -more work to get started (you need to create the database and code to interact with it). -risks of inaccurate/incomplete data, either initially or over time. -more maintenance work to keep database up to date. Assuming the depth information requested from users is as follows: -country: interested in value. also used to narrow down list of regions. -region (state in the US, county in the UK...): not interested in value itself, only used to narrow down list of cities. -city: interested in value (which can be used to work out related region should we need regional statistics). -address: interested in value although OPTIONAL. • PeopleSoft RECONNECT Conference Unites the PeopleSoft Community

  The PeopleSoft team is looking forward to participating in this new PeopleSoft deep dive conference from the Quest International Users Group.  We’ve worked diligently with the leadership of Quest’s PeopleSoft Special Interest Groups (SIG’s) and Regional User Groups (RUG’s) to make sure this national user event delivers PeopleSoft content that meets the needs of the PeopleSoft community.
