• When designing a job queue, what should determine the scope of a job?

  We've got a job queue system that'll cheerfully process any kind of job given to it. We intend to use it to process jobs that each contain 2 tasks: Job (Pass information from one server to another) Fetch task (get the data, slowly) Send task (send the data, comparatively quickly) The difficulty we're having is that we don't know whether to break the tasks into separate jobs, or process the job in one go. Are there any best practices or useful references on this subject? Is there some obvious benefit to a method that we're missing?   It is VERY hard to find good experienced programmers. Generally if they're performing well, their employers don't want to let them go, and many don't have resumes, let alone resumes in circulation. Let's say you find one who for personal circumstances is available. And let's say you make them an offer that's fair within your salary structure. And let's say you get a modest counter. (5-10% of the total offer side) Do you accept the counter? Part of me says, "Programmers like this are so rare, why let a small sum get in the way of hiring them?" The other part says, "This precedent will set up an annual headache." Thoughts? I know it's not black and white.

• U1 music shows unknown artist, how can I make it recognize m4a files?

  Hello all, I am in the process of uploading my music library as a backup to U1, but I figured, why not also enjoy Ubuntu 1 music on my iPhone? With a few difficulties to start, the upload is now in progress, but I've noticed that there is a huge percentage of files in the unknown artist folder, and I believe it is all of my m4a files. They play fine, but without any information. Coming from an iTunes background, and having bought the majority of my music on the iTunes store, I wonder how I could make this work, easily? I am on Maverick (afaik), but About Ubuntu shows 11.04. I use Banshee as my music manager, and I monitor my sync using Ubuntu one preferences, ubuntuone-indicator and magicicada. The total file size of my music folder is 38.9GB. Thank you for your help!! And apologies if I couldn't find a thread where this was already covered...

• Phantom activity on MySQL

  This is probably just my total lack of MySQL expertise, but is it typical to see lots of phantom activity on a MySQL instance via phpMyAdmin? I have a shared hosting plan through Lithium, and when I log in through the phpMyAdmin console and click on the 'Status' tab, it's showing crazy high numbers for queries. Within an hour of activating my account I had 1 million queries. At first I thought this was them setting things up, but the number is climbing constantly, averaging 170/second. I've got a support ticket in with Lithium, but I thought I'd ask here if this were a MySQL/shared host thing, because I had the same thing happen with a shared hosting plan through Joyent.

• Using Instance Nodes, worth it?

  I am making a 2d game where there are various environments with lots and lots of objects. There is a forest scene with like 1200 objects in total(trees mainly), of which around 100 are visible on the camera at any given time, as you move through the level. These are comprised of around 20 different kind of trees and other props. Each object is usually 2-6 triangles with a transparent texture. My developer asked me to replace each object in the scene with a node, and keeping only a minimal amount of actual objects which would be 300+ or so(?), since there are a few modified unique meshes. So he can instantiate the actual objects to keep the game light. Is this actually effective? And if so how much? I 've read about draw calls and such and I suppose that if I combine each texture (10 kinds of trees) in 1 mesh it will have the same effect?

• Is there a media player that works on HTTPS sites?

  I'm currently using Yahoo! Media Player for a site that needs to play MP3 files that are stored on our server. In total, there's quite a bit more than the free limits at Soundcloud, but each file is only a few minutes long. YMP is pretty good, but causes security warnings on HTTPS pages, because it can only be served via HTTP. Is there an equivalent free player I can embed for the HTTPS pages? EDIT: Just to clarify, I'm initially looking for something that will scan the page and turn media links playable.

  I made a clean install on my Sony Vaio laptop, of Ubuntu 11.10 and when the installation was ready, it prompted to remove the usb I was installing the distro from, and press enter to reboot. After this reboot the first thing I got was the following error: error: couldn't read file error: you need to load the kernel first Press any key to continue.. After that it throws me back to the Grub select screen: Ubuntu, with linux 3.0.0-14-generic-pae recovery mode previous linux versions (none since I made a clean install) memory test If i choose the first option it shows only a black screen and never loads anything. If i reboot the same thing happens. Could I repair this using boot-repair? Is there any other way? • Flash site loads slowly

  I have a simple html page that embeds an swf, that downloads other xml, swf and image files. The total count of the requests reaches about 90. I am aware that it should take a while until the content is available and I am OK with that. All the needed files are hosted by two different providers in the US: flashxml.net/monochrome-demo.html and u1.flashcomponents.net/samples/8751/index.html From two different countries in Europe, the content shows up a lot later (almost twice as later) from flashxml, than flashcomponents. I've done mtr tests and the ping difference is about 40ms and the flashxml server load is below 1. Do you have any other suggestions as to what should I look at?

  I installed ubuntu on my machine with only 80 GB of memory anticipating that I will remove it later but now I want to keep it forever (until I am frustrated with linux). I have 500 GB in my machine and now I want to use that raw 420 GB of space. How I can I do that ? with "space/memory" I am referring to secondary memory not Ram. • Looking for a non-cryptographic hash function that returns a single character

  Suppose I have a dictionary of ASCII words stored in uppercase. I also want to save those words into separate files so that the total word count of each file is approximately the same. By simply looking at the word I need to know which file it should be in (if it's there at all). Duplicate words should go into the same file and overwrite the last one. My first attempt at solving this problem is to use .NET's object.GetHashCode() function and .Trim() to get one of the "random" characters that pop up. I asked a similar question here If I only use one character of object.GetHashCode() I would get a hash code character of A..Z or 0..9. However saving the result of GetHashCode to disk is a no-no so I need a substitute. Question: What algorithm (or subset of an algorithm) is appropriate for pigeonholing strings into a single character or range of characters (Like hex 0..F offers 16 chars)? Real world usage: I'll use this answer to modify the Partition key used in Azure Table storage as described here

• DVC101 Video Capture Device on USB hub - Ubuntu Server 12.04

  I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop I use as a media server/video capture system. It only has 2 USB ports and I have a total of 3 devices I need to connect. The DVC101 works perfectly while plugged directly into the USB port in back of the laptop. Unfortunately it does not get recognized when plugged into a passive or powered USB hub. Questions: Is there something I am missing on the Ubuntu side? Something I need to do that will allow the device to be recognized through the hub? If not, will the extra USB ports on a dell laptop dock (port replicator) act the same as the aftermarket hubs? I know this one is off topic of Ubuntu but any input appreciated.

  I upgraded my Ubuntu 10.10 for Ubuntu 12.04. I have a Emachines E625 With Ubuntu 12.04 my wireless always disconnects every 10 sec. It didn't do that with 10.10.   On 3rd of Nov 2012 somebody started this thread : http://forums.hostgator.com/advice-needed-new-account-t214566.html?t=214566 subject "Advice needed on new account". I visited it on 5th and when I saw the total views I was stunned to see figure of 80,000( while other threads were having views from 50-300). I even made a post using name of rag_gupta. Then I simply typed in Google in IE (I work on Firefox) : Advice needed on new account ---- and yes this same page was in no#1 position. Subsequently I tried to create similar wording article in Hubpages to see how it'd fare. Unfortunately it was not allowed to be published. Then I published in blogger.com. But hardly any hits. Considering only the first two posts in the thread what could have driven google to rank it highly?

• Are there any OpenGL ES 2.0 examples for JOGL?

  I've scoured the internet for the last few hours looking for an example of how to run even the most basic OpenGL ES 2 example using JOGL but "by Jupiter!" it has been a total fail. I tried converting the android example from the OpenGL ES 2.0 Programming Guide examples (and at the same time looking at the WebGL example -- which worked fine) yet without any success. Note, that I don't just want to "enable root login?", but run my GUI from bottom-up as root. I don't want to type my password for anything but just for login and have total control over it.   In my university, our total required weekly attendance (for lectures and tutorials/similar) is about 12 hours. It was like that in the first year, and then everything required extremely little effort - I believe that if I invested as much efforts as someone who is studying for medicine or law, I could have learnt everything for 1-2 months - if not less! Now I'm second year and it doesn't look like it's going to be too different. This concerns me about the people who study in Oxford, Cambridge or Imperial College. It would be weird if they study that little, and it would be very concerning if they do study very hard, because this would mean that by the end of the year, their first year students will be better than our average third year student. Which is bad news for me, given that I share the market with them. I know the question can't have an absolutely accurate answer, but it can still be answered quite definitely, and it's relevant to many people.

  I did a small coding mistake and google indexed my site wrongly. this is correct form: https://www.foo.com/urunler/171/TENGA-CUP-DOUBLE-HOLE but google index my site like this : https://www.foo.com/urunler/171/cart.aspx first I fixed the problem and made a site map and only correct link in it. now I checked webmaster tools and I see this; Total indexed 513 Not selected 544 Blocked by robots 0 so I think this can be caused by double indexes and they looks not selected makes my data not selected. I want to know how to fix this "https://www.foo.com/urunler/171/cart.aspx" links. should I fix in code or should I connect to google to reindex my site. If I should redirect wrong/duplicate links to correct ones, what the way should be? thanks for your time in advance.

• Is it OK to push my code to GitHub while it is still in early development?

  I have some projects that are in a very early development state. They are nowhere nearing completion but I do host them (as public repos) on GitHub because: I have multiple computers and I want access to my code everywhere I want a backup for my code I want it to be easy if someone wants to collaborate in some way I use GitHub Issues as a poor man's project management software Is it OK to publish a project on GitHub even when it is very early in the development? I am a bit concerned about someone to come by and say OMG this is total BS, this code is so bad! while looking at unpolished/still in development/not tested code. What are your practices when you start new public projects? Do you wait until you have something substantial to show or you create a bare repo directly on GitHub and start from there? I used GitHub throughout this post but this applies to every code hosting service out there.
