• Will .NET 4.0 apps work on Win 2008 R2 Server Core?

  When Windows Server 2008 R2 was launched, the "server core" edition started to become useful to me, because it lets me deploy .NET background applications isolated on their own virtual machine instance with only a small fraction of all the disk space overhead of a default Windows Server installation, and very few Windows Updates. It comes with a subset of .NET 3.5 SP1 integrated (as an optional feature). Now that .NET 4.0 is released, the redistributables explicitly state that it's not support on Server Core. Any chance that there will be a separate download available for Server Core (e. g. without WPF) any time soon, has anybody heard about it?

  We're working on a project here in Visual Studio 2008. We're using the built-in testing suite provided with it (the Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UnitTesting namespace). It turns out, that much to our chagrin, a great deal of complexity (and therefore errors) have wound up coded into our UI layer. While our unit tests do a decent job of covering our business layer, our UI layer is a constant source of irritation. We'd ideally like to unit-test that, as well. Does anyone know of a good "Microsoft-compatible" way of doing that in visual studio? Will it introduce some sort of conflict to 'mix' unit testing frameworks like nUnitForms with the Microsoft stuff? Are there any obvious bear traps I should be aware of with unit-testing forms?

  Hi, here is the situation, i'm developping a Browser Helper Object (BHO) in C++ with Visual Studio 2008, and i learned that the memory wasn't managed the same way in Debug mode than in Release mode. So when i run my BHO in debug mode, internet explorer 8 works just fine and i got no erros at all, the browser stays alive forever, but as soon as i compile it in release mode, i got no errors, no message, nothing, but after 5 minutes i can see through the task manager that internet explorer instances are just eating memory and then the browser just stop responding every time. Please, I really need some hint on how to get a feedback on what could be the error. I heard that, often it was happening because of memory mismanagement. I need a software that just grab a memory dump or something when iexplorer crashes to help me find the problem. Any help is appreciated, I'll be looking for responses every single days, thank you.

• Disable IPV6 on specific NIC via PowerShell using a Com Object on Windows Server 2008 R2?

  I need to script some Windows Server 2008 R2 builds, preferably in PowerShell. I need to disable or uncheck IPV6 on a specific NIC (the same NIC every time). Currently, I have to set it manually. I do not want to disable IPV6 completely for the entire server other things may use that in the future. Is there an object I can reference in a PowerShell command specifying my NIC "Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Network Connection" and disable IPV6? Unfortunately, Group Policy is not an option says the boss. I've tried finding an appropriate WMI object via "PowerShell Scriptomatic" but failed to find the difference between an enabled setting versus disabled on the Intel NIC. Thanks in advance.

• Unable to debug ASP.NET Applicatation using VS 2008 on IIS 7 running on Windows 7 x64

  Hi, I've been trying to debug an existing asp.net web application that requires me to debug against an IIS website. I've installed the app and can navigate to it on localhost. However, when I start VS 2008 as an Administrator and try to debug it, I get a message "Unable to start debugging on the web server. The IIS worker process for the launched URL is not currently running." I've looked through some of the help file contents and can't seem to figure out what is going on. Clearly, the IIS worker process IS running, since I can navigate to the site locally without VS open. My boss has suggested that it might be because my OS is 64 bit. Any ideas?

  I am seeing something very odd and thought I would ask the Stackoverflow community if they knew the answer. I have an asp.net project that runs fine in one environment, but couldn't figure out what happened to the styles in another environment. In the first environment (Windows 2008 Server), the following link worked fine: <link href="/Styles/09/style.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> but in the other environment (it's a Windows 7), I had to change it to work: <link href="../Styles/09/style.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> Notice that the directories seemed to shift ahead one directory in the Win7, what's going on? It's like the "running" directory seems now be the \bin directory instead of the home! Which environment is configured correctly? How do I determine execution directory level? My concern going forward is pushing to a prod environment and guessing which configuration is correct. Any insight would be appreciated!

• Why does this VBS scheduled task (to call a URL) not work in Windows Server 2008?

  This same script worked in older server OS environments, and even on my desktop; and allows me to kick off a nightly process on my website's URL. It simply will not execute the URL in my Windows Server 2008 environment. It does not generate any errors, claiming task completion I can pull the same URL up just fine in the server's web browser I have the script running with "highest privileges" I even tried to create a batch file which executes it, so I can explicitly "Run as Administrator" and it still will not execute the URL (but will not generate any errors either).   Yesterday I stumbled over the information that Crystal Reports will no longer be included in Visual Studio 2010. Instead – it will be provided as a free download, but with a separate installation and a separate release date. According to the linked information the release of CR will be later than that of VS. My projects depend in parts on CR and I want to shift early to VS 2010. So there are some related questions: Can I use VS 2010 with the older 2008 version of CR? Do I need a workstation with a preinstalled VS 2008 or is the installation of the CR redistribution package sufficient to run that? Are there any experiences with the VS Beta concerning that?

  I have two projects in my solution 1- asp.net web project. 2- wcf serivce project. 3- other common projects between two listed above Currently on the local dev machine I have to run two visual studio instance to run both projects in debug mode. That makes the system run out of resources as these projects share some other project in the soultion which are heavy in files. Is there a way I can hookup the wcf project on a sinlge visual stodio instance that I am using to debug the asp.net web applicaiton. I do not want to combine the web and wcf project in to one. • In Visual Studio 2008, how can I make control+click do a "Go To Definition"?

  I know this is not strictly about programming, but it's pretty close. Anyway, in Delphi, you can hold control and click on a method to jump to its definition. In VS2008, you have to right-click and select "Go To Definition". I use this function quite often, so I'd really like to get VS to behave like delphi in this regard - its so much quicker to ctrl+click. I don't think there's a way to get this working in base VS2008 - am I wrong? Or maybe there's a plugin I could use? Edit: Click then F12 does work - but isn't really a good solution for me.. It's still way slower than ctrl+click. I might try AutoHotkey, since I'm already running it for something else. Edit: AutoHotkey worked for me. • SQL Server 2008 EF 4 - limiting database records returned using permissions?

  In our database all tables are linked back to a single table. This table has a bit column to limit whether the record is displayed. Currently the records are filtered on the code side of the website. Is there any way to set up permission so that userA would never see any record in the database where that common bit column was set to true? We are using SQL Server 2008. Alternatively we are also using entity framework 4.0 in .net 4 (in c#) if you have any ideas how it might be accomplished there? Thanks for your feedback.

From browsing this site I've realised the best option is via a view, but initially I thought I was meant to add several tables to the same full text index via Management Studio. I started to do this and realised the index would have no idea how they were related, so my question is: when would I want to have a full text index covering several tables in this way?   In Visual Studio 2008 project properties, Application tab, I can set the Output type to Windows Application, Console Application, or Class Library. I have a project that I want to build as a stand-alone tool (console app) and be available to a couple other tools I'm working on as a class library. The VS GUI only lets me choose one or the other, and building the proj twice all the time is inconvenient. How can I set it up to build both output types in a single build job? Do I write some custom MSBuild .targets file or what?

  Hello, I got question about IDENTITY_INSERT. When you change it to ON, SQL Server automatically changes AUTOINC_NEXT value to the last inserted value as identity. So if you got only one row with ID = 1 and insert row with ID = 100 while IDENTITY_INSERT is ON then next inserting row will have ID = 101. I'd like it to be 2 without need to reseed. Such behaviour already exists in SQL Server Compact 3.5. Is it possible to force SQL Server 2008 to not change AUTOINC_NEXT value while doing insert with IDENTITY_INSERT = ON ?

• Can Visual Studio Express run from USB drive?

  Using an arbitrary Windows machine (2000/XP or later), I can install Eclipse CDT to a USB drive move that USB drive onto a different Windows machine--one that does not have any form of Eclipse software already installed, and potentially a different version of Windows (but 2000/XP or later) use Eclipse to develop application-level C/C++ programs on that second machine (and that includes using the debugger), running directly from the USB drive without copying anything to C:. I can do all this without having Administrator privileges on either machine. I can do the same with NetBeans, and with several other IDEs that support C/C++ development. Is it possible to do this with any version of Visual Studio Express? If not, can you explain the technical reason(s) this doesn't work?

• Windows 2008 unable to execute c# powershell app. Returning access exception.

  Hi, Does anybody know why I can't access the folder where my powershell scripts are in windows 2008 Ent. When I try to create a script with textpad it craps out. When I try and execute a c# powershell app, which is stored on another win 2003 drive, it craps out with an access exception as well. I've set powershell execution policy to unrestricted for both normal users and admin users with 'run as admin' on powershell, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. There must be a policy setting, doesn't allow scripts access to a directory, but where, and how to set it. Any help would be appreciated. scope_creep

• How can I save/print values in my WATCH list in Visual Studio 2008?

  When I attach the Visual Studio 2008 debugger to my web server process, I sometimes browse a large amount of data in my watch list. Suppose I have an array of string variable that I expand to show 20 entries. It seems that the only way to save these values is to copy and paste them one at a time. I have gone so far as to do a screen-shot in order to have a record of what the values were (to refer to later or print a hard copy). Is there an easy way to save and print these values? I am familiar with the new "IntelliTrace" feature in Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate, but it seems overkill for this purpose. I just want to take something like an array of strings and save it for later reference once I've stopped the debugger. What's a good way to do this?

• Using "Go To Controller" and "Go To View" in Visual Studio 2008 when controllers are in different as

  The title is basically the question. We decided to move our controller classes to a separate library and reference it in our asp.net mvc 2 application. It works just fine when running the application, meaning the controllers are being referenced while the application is running. But when doing development (in Visual Studio 2008) and I am in a View and try to use the context menu "Go To Controller" it can't find our controllers in the new assembly. Same with when I am inside a controller, I don't have the Context menu to "Add View" or "Go To View" anymore. Does anyone one know how to remedy this? I searched like crazy but haven't found any solutions or even half solutions. Thanks!

• Do you have references issues with Visual Studio 2008 and C#.Net?

  I'm working on a project and it seems that every time someone checks out the project from source control to build it on their local box they have issues building because references are no longer resolved. I can't figure out if it's a configuration issues or a Visual Studio 2008 issue. Is anyone else having this problem? If so, is there something you can do to fix this issue? Note: it might have something to do with explicit paths to the DLLs being referenced or how they are referenced ... I'm not quite sure.

  I've recently started a new job working with webdevelopment in .NET. Coming from a php and rails background i've been working mainly in Eclipse and NetBeans, along with some TextMate. I find myself missing a few great keyboard shortcuts and i can't seem to find a Visual Studio equivalent. NetBeans has the awesome "Go To File" and so does Eclipse with this plugin. Eclipse also has the option of quick searching in the open file list with Cmd/Ctrl-E. Is there something like this in Visual Studio? Either build in or via plugin. Or is there some other way of quickly navigating between files that's prefered?
