  • Behavior of deployment tool in Visual Studio Express

    I created a quick game in VS Express (2008) and used the built-in deployment tool (click once?) to create an installer. I took it to another computer, ran it (Windows XP) to install from a burned CD. It created the program but only for the logged in user. Is there a setting I'm missing for installing it to all users on an XP system? Or is this a limitation of the Express edition's installer?

  • Visual Studio ignore try catch - debug only

    I think error handling is a good idea. :) When debugging it can get in the way - especially with nice user friendly messages. In VB6 I could just check a box for the compiler to ignore my error handling. I found the dialog that allows me to do something similar in VS, but it's about 10,000 check boxes instead of one - which is too many to change every time I want a production compilation. Is there a way to set VS up so when I am in debugging mode I get one set of conditions and when I am in production I get another? ...or is there just another method to handling errors and debugging more efficiently?     Im having issues getting this to work, maybe its not even possible? I have a PUBLIC Server http://publicserver.com I want to debug using my laptop from my home (for instance) I run msvsmon.exe on the public server, it starts up fine. On my local machine, i have my code open and in VS, i choose Debug-Attach for Qualifier i enter publicserver.com, but it tells me it cannot find it Questions: 1.) What port does remote debugging use? If i port sniff i dont see msvsmon.exe opening any new port ... Does it use 4015 by default? I dont think its a security thing, so please dont point me to the articles, i have followed them as much as i can, but they dont work for my scenerio (unless you find one i havent seen) Thanks :-)

    Is it possible to use the App_Data folder in conjunction with SQL Server 2005? When I try it specifies Express even though I have changed the ToolsOptionsDatabaseData Connections to the correct server. I have downloaded SQLEXPR32_x86_ENU.exe Version 10.0.1600.22 file locally and have gone through 7 installs and deinstalls with a variety of different errors. I pretty much given up on Express and would like to find a workaround if it exists. Thanks Dennis Keith

  • Visual Studio 2008 Report Designer - can't turn on gridlines

    Microsoft in their infinite wisdom have seen fit to remove the useful "Draw Grid" and "Snap to Grid" checkboxes in the report properties dialog that were in VS 2005 but are not in VS 2008. I'm assuming they put that functionality elsewhere but I can't find it after going through what seems like every menu option available. Does anybody know how to turn on the gridlines?

  • IntelliSense and Folding Editor Not Working in Visual Studio 2008 SP1 for Certain Files Only

    Ok, I have an issue that is driving me nuts. In certain xaml files only, neither IntelliSense nor the folding editor is working. I have noticed that if I delete the local namespace and add it back, the folding editor starts working. If I delete the local namespace and don't add it back, IntelliSense starts working as well. Of course, I need to remember to add that namespace declaration back before I compile and/or check in ... which is annoying. How can you fix this?

  • Visual Studio .dll Reference not found ?

    I had never had this error before, and I didn't move any file, or exclude any reference. I'm getting this error (link). In the ajaxcontroltoolkit.dll.refresh file, I get a path to the DLL, but it is a path that was located in someone else's computer (who no longer is in charge of this). It might as well work if I just re-do the reference, but what is weird is that I've used this reference before, and had no problems. I don't know what triggered it.. Does anyone have any clue ? --[UPDATE]-- As expected, I've fixed it, but this question remains unanswered. Besides, the exact same problem with a coworker..

  • Visual Studio Team System 2008 - messy formatting/control characters/marks in source code

    Hi, I don't know what I did but somehow the IDE has started displaying a green dot whenever I press spacebar and a green arrowhead whenever I press TAB. The source has become littered with these characters all over and I am finding it very difficult to code in the presence of so many formatting marks. I have tried to search a solution on Google but couldn't perhaps enter the right keywords so haven't been able to fix the behavior. Is there any way I can stop VS2008 IDE from littering my source code with these green dots and arrowheads whenever I press spacebar/tab? I would be really thankful for this help. Thanks, -AL

    I have made a template singleton class, I have also made a data structure that is templated. My question is; how do I make my templated data structure inherit from a singleton so you can only have one float type of this structure? I have tested both seperate and have found no problems.   • Visual Studio 2010 Intellisense annoyances

    In VS2010 when my intellisense (for C#) pops up the first selected item is not highlighted. This means i have to press down/up-arrow before i press dot/enter/parenthesis to get the full word. This only happens with the new intellisense (the one that searches everywhere and not only in the beginning). Also, how do i switch between the old and new intellisense? This seems to happen automatically sometimes so i guess there's some hotkey i keep pressing all the time without knowing.

  • Visual studio Solution for two versions of a web application

    The issue at hand is this. We have a web application with two different versions, a full application, and a light version of it. In it's most part the light version is a subset of the full version, which means that it uses the same web pages and references the same binaries with the full version. However, some of the pages of the full version should not be deployed with the light version obviously, and some binaries (libraries etc) need not be deployed with the full version. If it were a windows forms application we could attempt to approach the issue at hand with preprocessor directives, unfortunately this is not feasible I think. (please do correct me if I'm wrong with this) Anyway, what would a good approach on this? Thanks

  • Visual Studio 2008/2010 & SQL Server 2008 on Windows 7 Home Premium

    Are there any limitations with respect to developing ASP.NET and WPF apps using VS 2008/2010 and SQL Server 2008 on Windows 7 Home Premium? I know you can run IIS 7.5 on Home Premium. I Googled and Binged on Home Premium and VS/SQL Server and couldn't find much. It doesn't look like the features missing from Home Premium, domain joining, xp mode, etc... shouldn't prevent one from running and developing in VS/SQL Server. Update I did discover one limitation w/IIS 7.5 and it applies to all versions of Windows 7 I think. You can't create your own self signed SSL certificate specifying a name other than the machine name. You're stuck with your machine name which isn't that big a deal, but it is a change from previous versions.

  • Visual Studio expression containing a term named "by" cannot be evaluated in the watch window

    Consider my C++ code below: int _tmain(int argc, _TCHAR* argv[]) { int by = 10; printf("%d\n", by); int bx = 20; printf("%d\n", (by + bx)); return 0; } which works fine. The funny thing is with the "by" variable. If I try to add a watch for a simple expression that contains by, the result will be CXX0030: Error: expression cannot be evaluated. For example, on a breakpoint on return 0, if I add the following watches I get the results mentioned: by : 10 bx : 20 by + 5 : CXX0030: Error: expression cannot be evaluated bx + 5 : 25 by + bx : CXX0030: Error: expression cannot be evaluated (by) + bx : 30 by + (bx) : CXX0030: Error: expression cannot be evaluated bx + (by) : CXX0014: Error: missing operrand This happens on VS2010, VS2008 on multiple computers. So, more out of curiosity, what is happening with "by"? Is it some kind of strange operator? Why doesn't bx get the same treatment? (I've tried google on this but it is quite difficult to get some relevant hits with terms like "by")
