  • Zabbix Trigger for SELinux (type=AVC) Errors

    - by Kevin Soviero
    I would like to create a trigger in Zabbix to alert me anytime a type=AVC error appears in a CentOS 6 server's /var/log/audit/audit.log file. I've already tried creating a basic log scrape. E.g.: log[/var/log/audit/audit.log,type=AVC,"UTF-8",100] However, it does not work. I believe this is due to the /var/log/audit/audit.log and it's parent folder using the following permissions: drwxr-x---. 2 root root 4096 Apr 20 04:29 . drwxr-xr-x. 13 root root 4096 Apr 14 12:07 .. -rw-------. 1 root root 5948185 Apr 20 15:27 audit.log -r--------. 1 root root 6291566 Apr 20 04:29 audit.log.1 -r--------. 1 root root 6291704 Apr 19 16:56 audit.log.2 -r--------. 1 root root 6291499 Apr 19 05:22 audit.log.3 -r--------. 1 root root 6291552 Apr 18 17:48 audit.log.4 I would prefer not to change the permissions for security reasons. Has anyone done log monitoring of /var/log/audit/audit.log using Zabbix? And if so, how?

  • Nginx + uWSGI + Django performance stuck on 100rq/s

    - by dancio
    I have configured Nginx with uWSGI and Django on CentOS 6 x64 (3.06GHz i3 540, 4GB), which should easily handle 2500 rq/s but when I run ab test ( ab -n 1000 -c 100 ) performance stops at 92 - 100 rq/s. • FTP User cannot modify files but has correct permissions

    - by Lothar_Grimpsenbacher
I have created a new user (foo) and when he logs in via ftp he cannot edit the files in the directory to which he has access. In the directory he can log into ls -l gives me: -rw-rw-r-- 1 root www-pub 6427 Nov 17 04:21 index.html The user belongs to the group www-pub. Here is the output of cat /etc/group to demonstrate that he is indeed in that group: ... www-pub:x:1001:ftpuser,www-data,foo foo:x:1002: *edit the permissions on the containing directory are: drwxrwsr-x 5 root www-pub 4096 Nov 17 02:53 thecontainingdir and the one above that: drwxrwsr-x 49 root www-pub 4096 Nov 16 02:40 thenextdirup So since he can log in via ftp and since the file he needs to edit has the correct permissions to let the group www-pub read and write the file and he is a member of that group, why can't he edit it (or upload anything)? Only when I change the file to 777 can he edit it. It's as if he's NOT in the group... but he is! What's going on?

I don't understand this huge differences, on other machines y don't have this behavior. Can I have some kernel parameter misconfigured? Thanks!

  • Linux Tuning for High Traffic JBoss Server with LDAP Binds

    - by Levi Stanley
I'm configuring a high traffic Linux server (RedHat) and running into a limit I haven't been able to track down. I need to be able to handle sustained 300 requests per second throughput using Nginx and JBoss. The point of this server is to run checks on a user's account when that user signs in. Each request goes through Nginx to JBoss (specifically Torquebox with JBoss A7 with a Sinatra app) and then makes an LDAP request to bind that user and retrieve several attributes. It is during the bind that these errors occur. I'm able to reproduce this going directly to JBoss, so that rules out Nginx at least. I get a variety of error messages, though oddly JBoss stopped writing to the log file recently. It used to report errors about creating native threads. Now I just see "java.net.SocketException: Connection reset" and "org.apache.http.conn.HttpHostConnectException: Connection to http://my.awesome.server:8080 refused" as responses in jmeter. To the best of my knowledge, I have plenty of available file handles, processes, sockets, and ports, yet the issue persists. Unfortunately, I have very little experience tuning servers. I've found a couple useful documents - Ipsysctl tutorial 1.0.4 and Linux Tuning - but those documents are a bit over my head (and just entering the the configuration described in Linux Tuning doesn't fix my issue. Here are the configuration changes I've tried (webproxy is the user that runs Nginx and JBoss): /etc/security/limits.conf webproxy soft nofile 65536 webproxy hard nofile 65536 webproxy soft nproc 65536 webproxy hard nproc 65536 root soft nofile 65536 root hard nofile 65536 root soft nproc 65536 root hard nofile 65536 First attempt /etc/sysctl.conf sysctl net.core.somaxconn = 8192 sysctl net.ipv4.ip_local_port_range = 32768 65535 sysctl net.ipv4.tcp_fin_timeout = 15 sysctl net.ipv4.tcp_keepalive_time = 1800 sysctl net.ipv4.tcp_keepalive_intvl = 35 sysctl net.ipv4.tcp_tw_recycle = 1 sysctl net.ipv4.tcp_tw_reuse = 1 Second attempt /etc/sysctl.conf net.core.rmem_max = 16777216 net.core.wmem_max = 16777216 net.ipv4.tcp_rmem = 4096 87380 16777216 net.ipv4.tcp_wmem = 4096 65536 16777216 net.core.netdev_max_backlog = 30000 net.ipv4.tcp_congestion_control=htcp net.ipv4.tcp_mtu_probing=1 Any ideas what might be happening here? Or better yet, are there some good documentation resources designed for beginners?

  • Apache and linux file permissions

    - by morpheous
I recently moved a Symfony 1.3.2 website (a PHP web framework), from a windows machine to Linux (Ubuntu 9.10). Ever since then, I have had all kinds of problems involving file permission (even though the app run without any of these problems on windows). I run symfony fix-perms which applied a 777 mask to the web directory (presumably, including its sub folders) - (as an aside) I think that is a potential security hole ... I have been meaning to come in here to ask how to correctly set permissions. Currently, when attempting to save a file from my website, I am getting the following error: PHP Warning: imagejpeg() [0function.imagejpeg0]: Unable to open '/home/morpheous/work/webdev/frameworks/symfony/sites/project1/web/uploads/../images/thumbnail/959cd604cf6115014a3703bef5a50486a5520642.jpg' for writing: Permission denied in /home/morpheous/work/webdev/frameworks/symfony/sites/project1/apps/frontend/lib Here are the permissions on the folders: web drwxr-xr-x 16 morpheous morpheous 4096 2010-02-24 21:01 web web/uploads/../images drwxr-xr-x 13 morpheous morpheous 12288 2010-04-09 15:25 images web/uploads/../images/thumbnail drwxr-xr-x 3 morpheous morpheous 4096 2010-02-24 20:44 thumbnail Can someone kindly tell me how to set the permissions so that my website (presumably running as the Apache daemon) can write the files to the directory required above?

  • What does it mean for the file name to be shown with red background

    - by user56614
I'm trying to install Cisco VPN client on Linux Ubuntu 10.04. The installer creates the directory, places all the necessary files in it, and then fails to launch the binary. I tried to launch it myself, the system rebukes me too. Closer inspection yields the following: eugene@eugene-desktop:/opt/cisco/vpn/bin$ sudo chmod u+x vpnagentd eugene@eugene-desktop:/opt/cisco/vpn/bin$ ls -la total 5124 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2010-10-23 11:51 . drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 2010-10-23 11:51 .. -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1607236 2010-10-23 11:51 vpn -rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 1204692 2010-10-23 11:51 vpnagentd -r--r--r-- 1 root root 697380 2010-10-23 11:51 vpndownloader.sh -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1712708 2010-10-23 11:51 vpnui -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 3654 2010-10-23 11:51 vpn_uninstall.sh eugene@eugene-desktop:/opt/cisco/vpn/bin$ ./vpnagentd bash: ./vpnagentd: No such file or directory eugene@eugene-desktop:/opt/cisco/vpn/bin$ sudo ./vpnagentd sudo: unable to execute ./vpnagentd: No such file or directory The file name "vpnagentd" is shown in white letters with red background. The other three executables are in green letters with black background, as expected. Any ideas?

  • How to get a higher resolution on Ubuntu 11.04 using an intel chipset

    - by Saif Bechan
I have a bit slow PC here, so I decided to put Ubuntu 11.04 on it. It use to run Windows Vista on a resolution of 1280x1024, so both my hardware and monitor support it. Now I'm on Ubuntu, but can only run 1024x768, and the screen is not that bright. Its like when you don't have the right drivers on a Windows machine. Now i'm new to linux, so I do not know what do do. I have an onboard Intel chipset i965. • linux hardware raid 10 / lvm / virtual machine partition alignment and filesystem optimization

    - by Jason Ward
I've been reading everything I can find about partition alignment and filesystem optimization (ext4 and xfs) but still don't know enough to be confident in setting up my current configuration. My remaining confusion comes from the LVM layer and if I should use raid parameters on the filesystem in guest os'es. My main questions are: When I use 'pvcreate --dataalignment' do I use the stripe-width as calculated for a filesystem on RAID (128kB for ext4 in my situation), the Stripe size of the RAID set (256kB), something else altogether, or do I not need this? When I create ext2/3/4 or xfs filesystems in guests on the Logical Volumes, should I add the settings for the underlying RAID (e.g. mkfs.ext4 -b 4096 -E stride=64,stripe-width=128)? Does anyone see any glaring errors in my set up below? I'm running some benchmarks now but haven't done enough to start comparing results. I have four drives in RAID 10 on a 3ware 9750-4i controller (more details on the settings below) giving me a 6.0TB device at /dev/sda. Here is my partition table: Model: LSI 9750-4i DISK (scsi) Disk /dev/sda: 5722024MiB Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B Partition Table: gpt Number Start End Size File system Name Flags 1 1.00MiB 257MiB 256MiB ext4 BOOTPART boot 2 257MiB 4353MiB 4096MiB linux-swap(v1) 3 4353MiB 266497MiB 262144MiB ext4 4 266497MiB 4460801MiB 4194304MiB Partition 1 is to be the /boot partition for my xen host. Partition 2 is swap. Partition 3 is to be the root (/) for my xen host. Partition 4 is to be (the only) physical volume to be used by LVM (for those who are counting, I left about 1.2TB unallocated for now) For my Xen guests, I usually create a Logical Volume of the needed size and present it to the guests for them to partition as needed. I know there are other ways of handling that but this method works best for my situation. Here's the hardware of interest on my CentOS 6.3 Xen Host: 4x Seagate Barracuda 3TB ST3000DM001 Drives (sector size: 512 logical/4096 physical) 3ware 9750-4i w/BBU (sector size reported: 512 logical/512 physical) All four drives make up a RAID 10 array. Stripe: 256kB Write Cache enabled Read Cache: intelligent StoreSave: Balance Thanks!

  • Setting kernel memory for installing postgresql

    - by Matthieu Taymans
My question is about setting the kernel shared memory for installing postgresql on mac osx 10.6.8. In the readme file of postgresql it is said: Shared Memory PostgreSQL uses shared memory extensively for caching and inter-process communication. Unfortunately, the default configuration of Mac OS X does not allow suitable amounts of shared memory to be created to run the database server. Before running the installation, please ensure that your system is configured to allow the use of larger amounts of shared memory. Note that this does not 'reserve' any memory so it is safe to configure much higher values than you might initially need. You can do this by editting the file /etc/sysctl.conf - e.g. % sudo vi /etc/sysctl.conf On a MacBook Pro with 2GB of RAM, the author's sysctl.conf contains: kern.sysv.shmmax=1610612736 kern.sysv.shmall=393216 kern.sysv.shmmin=1 kern.sysv.shmmni=32 kern.sysv.shmseg=8 kern.maxprocperuid=512 kern.maxproc=2048 Note that (kern.sysv.shmall * 4096) should be greater than or equal to kern.sysv.shmmax. kern.sysv.shmmax must also be a multiple of 4096. Once you have edited (or created) the file, reboot before continuing with the installation. If you wish to check the settings currently being used by the kernel, you can use the sysctl utility: % sysctl -a The database server can now be installed. I'm a real beginner with all this but need to instal postgresql for academic purposes do you know how i can set this kernel shared memory. Won't that be harmful for my system? Thank you in advance. Matthieu

The private ip address is 192.168.1.202 I changed /etc/default/portmap to add: OPTIONS="-i 192.168.1.202" The command lsof -n | grep portmap returns: portmap 10252 daemon cwd DIR 202,0 4096 2 / portmap 10252 daemon rtd DIR 202,0 4096 2 / portmap 10252 daemon txt REG 202,0 15248 13461 /sbin/portmap portmap 10252 daemon mem REG 202,0 83708 32823 /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libnsl-2.7.so portmap 10252 daemon mem REG 202,0 1364388 32817 /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc-2.7.so portmap 10252 daemon mem REG 202,0 31304 16588 /lib/libwrap.so.0.7.6 portmap 10252 daemon mem REG 202,0 109152 16955 /lib/ld-2.7.so portmap 10252 daemon 0u CHR 1,3 960 /dev/null portmap 10252 daemon 1u CHR 1,3 960 /dev/null portmap 10252 daemon 2u CHR 1,3 960 /dev/null portmap 10252 daemon 3u unix 0xecc8c3c0 4332992 socket portmap 10252 daemon 4u IPv4 4332993 UDP 192.168.1.202:sunrpc portmap 10252 daemon 5u IPv4 4332994 TCP 192.168.1.202:sunrpc (LISTEN) portmap 10252 daemon 6u REG 0,12 289 3821511 /var/run/portmap_mapping I defined in /etc/hosts the following: 192.168.1.202 server.local In /etc/default/nfs-common I changed STATDOPTS to: STATDOPTS="--name server.local" Yet when I run /etc/init.d/nfs-common start if fails to start. • SSH Private Key Not Working in Some Directories

    - by uesp
I have a strange issue where SSH won't properly connect with a private-key if the key file is in certain directories. I've setup the keys on a set of servers and the following command ssh -i /root/privatekey [email protected] works fine and I login to the given host without getting prompted by a password, but this command: ssh -i /etc/keyfiles/privatekey [email protected] gives me a password prompt. I've narrowed it down that this behavior occurs in only some sub-directories of /etc/. For example /etc/httpd1/ gives me a password prompt but /etc/httpd/ does not. What I've checked so far: All private key files used are identical (copied from the original file). The private key file and directories used have identical permissions. No relevant error messages in the server/client logs. No interesting debug messages from ssh -v (it just seems to skip the key file). It happens with connecting to different hosts. After more testing it is not the actual directory name. For example: mkdir /etc/test cp /root/privatekey /etc/test ssh -i /etc/test/privatekey [email protected] # Results in password prompt cp /root/privatekey /etc/httpd # Existing directory ls -ald test httpd # drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 Mar 5 18:25 httpd # drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Mar 5 18:43 test ssh -i /etc/httpd/privatekey [email protected] # Results in *no* prompt rm -r test cp -R /etc/httpd /etc/test ssh -i /etc/test/privatekey [email protected] # Results in *no* prompt` I'm sure its just something simple I've overlooked but I'm at a loss.

  • How do I move a linked file on Unix?

So ls -l looks something like this: lrwxrwxrwx 1 rembol rembol 89 Jan 25 10:00 copyright.txt -> /home/rembol/solr/target/deploy/data/core/copyright.txt lrwxrwxrwx 1 rembol rembol 92 Jan 25 10:00 jar-versions.xml -> /home/rembol/solr/target/deploy/data/core/jar-versions.xml lrwxrwxrwx 1 rembol rembol 85 Jan 25 10:00 lgpl.html -> /home/rembol/solr/target/deploy/data/core/lgpl.html lrwxrwxrwx 1 rembol rembol 79 Jan 25 10:00 lib -> /home/rembol/solr/target/deploy/data/core/lib lrwxrwxrwx 1 rembol rembol 87 Jan 25 10:00 readme.html -> /home/rembol/solr/target/deploy/data/core/readme.html drwxr-xr-x 3 rembol rembol 4096 Jan 25 10:00 server drwxr-xr-x 2 rembol rembol 4096 Jan 25 10:00 startup Now I want to move those linked files from /home/rembol/solr/target/deploy to /home/rembol/output/. If I do that my simply calling mv, links will break. I don't want to re-link each file separately, cause there are hundreds of them (they are generated automatically). Is there some clever way to move linked files, rather than writing a script that unlinks, moves and relinks recursively for each file in each subdirectory?

  • You don't have permission to access /wordpress/ on this server

    - by Mads Skjern
I have a server running Debian, with an installation of Apache 2.2.16, with PHP/MySQL, and now also an instance of Wordpress. I am playing around with user/group rights on Debian, and I can't make it work the way I want it to. I believe Apache is using (only) the www-data user. The following setup works /var/www# chown -R www-data:nogroup wordpress /var/www# chmod -R 700 wordpress /var/www# ls -l | grep wordpress drwx------ 5 www-data nogroup 4096 Nov 1 09:30 wordpress The following doesn't work. /var/www# groupadd wordpress /var/www# usermod -a -G wordpress www-data /var/www# groups www-data www-data : www-data wordpress /var/www# chown -R nobody:wordpress wordpress /var/www# chmod -R 770 wordpress /var/www# ls -l | grep wordpress drwxrwx--- 5 nobody wordpress 4096 Nov 1 09:30 wordpress With the above settings, when I try to access the page in my browser, I get: You don't have permission to access /wordpress/ on this server. Here is my understanding: The folders are owned by the group wordpress, and the folders have all rights (read, write, execcute) given to the owning group, wordpress. Apache user www-data is a member of the group wordpress, so it should have all rights to the folders. What have I misunderstood?

  • kill a hung mount process

    - by John P
I have a virtual machine drive that ran out of space, so I shutdown the VM, extended the volume using lvextend. After resizing the partition (ext3), I ran e2fsck on it, and it found and corrected errors. Unfortunately, when I ran efsck one more time, there were more errors that had to be fixed. I went through 3 rounds of e2fsck before I decided to try mounting it to clean up some space manually. I tried mounting it, but the mount process hung. I tried to "kill -9" the mount process, but that did not kill it. I killed the parent process, but that did not kill it either. Any ideas on how to kill a rogue mount process? Is this user error, AUFS feature or bug maybe: rac@tecraS1:~/tmp$ mkdir orig tmp au rac@tecraS1:~/tmp$ sudo mount -t tmpfs none tmp rac@tecraS1:~/tmp$ sudo chown -R rac tmp rac@tecraS1:~/tmp$ echo hello > orig/hello rac@tecraS1:~/tmp$ sudo mount -t aufs -o br=tmp:orig none au rac@tecraS1:~/tmp$ ls -al au total 8 drwxrwxrwt 4 rac root 100 2011-01-06 13:53 . drwxr-xr-x 5 rac rac 4096 2011-01-06 13:52 .. -rw-r--r-- 1 rac rac 6 2011-01-06 13:53 hello rac@tecraS1:~/tmp$ rm au/hello rm: cannot remove `au/hello': Operation not permitted rac@tecraS1:~/tmp$ Seems the aufs files were created as root and user has no access to them: rac@tecraS1:~/tmp$ sudo rm au/hello rac@tecraS1:~/tmp$ ls -al tmp total 4 drwxrwxrwt 4 rac root 120 2011-01-06 13:53 . drwxr-xr-x 5 rac rac 4096 2011-01-06 13:52 .. -r--r--r-- 2 root root 0 2011-01-06 13:53 .wh.hello -r--r--r-- 2 root root 0 2011-01-06 13:53 .wh..wh.aufs drwx------ 2 root root 40 2011-01-06 13:53 .wh..wh.orph drwx------ 2 root root 40 2011-01-06 13:53 .wh..wh.plnk rac@tecraS1:~/tmp$ OS is the latest Lucid with 2.6.35-23 stock kernel. No idea about aufs version. Using sudo chown -R rac tmp/.wh* fixes the problem. Thanks for looking.
