• An international mobile app - Should I set up EC2 instances in multiple regions?

  I am currently trying to launch an mobile app for users around the world. It is not a spectacular launch which will get millions of users in weeks - just another individual developer releasing an app. I know enough about the techniques of managing timezones, internationalizing string, and what not ( the application layer ). But I cannot find any information on how I should manage my EC2 instances... Should I be setting up EC2 instances in different regions around the world? Is that a must-do, or is it an overkill? I'm aware that it's the ideal solution in terms of performance, but it becomes very tough managing servers in multiple regions. DB issues, AMI management, etc... I'd much rather NOT do so. So I would like to know the general best practice when launching an international app/website. Note: For static contents, I know it's better to use a CDN, so I'm planning on doing so.

• Setup Apache in Amazon AWS

  Hi, I tried to setup apache 2.2 in amazon aws using amazon ami. i did installed httpd and php and congirue http.conf to use /var/www/html. Then put file index.html on that folder. But when i tried to use browser to browse my domain which is ec2-122-248-255-181.ap-southeast-1.compute.amazonaws.com, nothing was loaded. I did start httpd by running apachectl start, and i can see it listening on port 80. Does anybody know what is wrong?

• Ügyfelek elégedettsége

  Tegnap az indexen olvastam egy érdekes cikket arról, hogy ma már idehaza is egyre tudatosabban viselkednek a fogyasztók az IFUA Horváth & Partners felmérése szerint. Például bankok esetében ha jobb ajánlat van a konkurenciánál, akkor máris átviszik a pénzüket. Fentirol egybol beugrott, hogy az Oracle Real User Experience Insight (RUEI) termékünk esetében készült Gartner és ResponseTek közös felmérés is hasonló megfigyelésre épít, csak épp az online, webes rendszerek esetében. Így például ha maradunk a banki példánál, akkor mondjuk egy netbank rendszer elégedetlen felhasználóit is könnyen elveszíthetjük. A felmérés alapján az összes ügyfél kb. 10%-át veszíthetjük el, ami az összes problémát tapasztaló felhasználónak közel a fele! Ezidáig mindig óvatosan kezeltem a fenti ábrát, hiszen nem voltam biztos abban a magyar vásárlók is kelloen tudatosak. Az IFUA felmérése alapján azonban bátrabban állíthatom, hogy a ResponseTek felmérés nagyságrendileg hasonló eredményt hozna Magyarországon is. Így érdemes lehet megfontolni bármely olyan cégnek a valós végfelhasználók hatékony monitorozását, amely forgalmának és bevételeinek jelentos részét webes felületen realizálja. Az Oracle RUEI terméke mindezt úgy teszi, hogy a hálózati protokollt elemzi. Ezáltal rendkívül gyorsan bevezetheto, nem igényel beavatkozást a már muködo alkalmazásokba és a valós felhasználói aktivitást teljes mértékben képes monitorozni. Igény esetén magam is szívesen segítek a szoftver kipróbálásában, saját környezetben történo tesztelésében.

• Grant Ronald - Forms, ADF guru Budapesten!

  Tudom, késon szólok (blogolok : ), de mégis a lényeg akkor: Grant Ronald lesz a vendégeloadónk az Oracle hazai Technology Forum rendezvényén. Röviden róla: Grant Ronald (Senior Group Product Manager, BSc.) 1989 óta dolgozik az IT iparágban és 1997-ben csatlakozott az Oracle Support Forms/Reports/Discoverer csapatához, melynek késobb vezetoje lett. Jelenleg az Alkalmazás Fejlesztoi Eszközök (köztük Forms és JDeveloper) fejlesztésért felelos csoport tagja. Fo feladata a fejlesztési eszközök stratégiai irányának meghatározása, valamint a Forms felhasználók számára fontos migráció, Java platformra történo áttérés támogatása. Jelen pillanatban tehát meghatározó ember a JEE (ADF) evangelizációban. Ami pedig a legfontosabb Forms aspektusból, 4GL fejlesztok szemszögébol (is)! Tehát aki Forms vagy ADF fejleszto (vagy akar lenni, persze ez utóbbi) vagy egyszeruen meg akar hallgatni egy nagyszeru eloadást JEE és azon belül is Oracle vonatkozásban regisztráljon itt. Fontos! • Letöltheto az Oracle Database Firewall 5.0

  2010 május 20-án jelentettük be, hogy megvettük az adatbázis tuzfal megoldást fejleszto Secerno céget. Azóta viszonylag keveset lehetett hallani errol a termékrol, idehaza egyedül az oszi ITBN konferencián tartott róla eloadást Stuart Sharp szuk fél órában. Ráadásul a felvásárlás óta a terméket sem lehetett megvásárolni, hiszen a merge után folyó fejlesztések még nem voltak készen. Január 11. óta azonban letötlheto az Oracle Database Firewall 5.0 telepítoje az Oracle edelivery oldaláról az Oracle Database Product Pack-en belül Linux x86 platformra. A Database Firewall az adatbázis védelem elso vonalának tekintheto. Valós idoben monitorozza az adatbázis aktivitását a hálózaton. SQL nyelvi elemzojével rendkívül pontosan képes detektálni a külso és belso támadásokat, a jogosultatlanul, támadó szándékkal végrehajtott tranzakciókat. Az SQL nyelvi elemzojének kifinomultsága lehetové teszi a szurés közel 100%-os pontosságát és megbízhatóságát, ami azért rendkívül fontos, mert nem elég minden támadó tranzakciót kiszurni, de fontos hogy a normál üzletmenetnek megfelelo tranzakciók közül egyet se szurjön, hiszen az is komoly üzleti károkat okozhat. Az adatbázis tuzfalról több részletet tudhat meg mindenki, aki regisztrál és ellátogat a január 27-i Oracle Security Summit rendezvényünkre, ahol a tervek szerint ismét Stuart Sharp tart majd eloadást, viszont ezúttal 1 órában sokkal több részletet tud megosztani a magyar ügyfelekkel és partnerekkel. A Database Firewall eloadást megelozoen egyébként én tartok egy kb. félórás áttekintést az Oracle Database biztonsági megoldásairól.

• Egy konferencia marg&oacute;j&aacute;ra

  Nem akarok provokátornak tunni, de lenne egy-két észrevételem az amúgy jól sikerült Open Source 2011 konferencia kapcsán. Persze a mi rendezvényeinkre is lehet panasz, amit szívesen is veszünk, hogy tanuljunk belole. Szóval nem sikerült az elektronikus regisztráció, pedig még fel is hívtak elotte, meg minden. Ennek ellenére a helyszíni listában mégsem voltam benne. Persze gyorsan megoldották, de azért mégis egy informatikai konferenciáról van szó. Ha már open source, akkor tényleg olyan nehéz lett volna Linuxos gépeket, odahozni OpenOffice (vagy LibreOffice, vagy akármi) telepítéssel. Volt is minden eloadásváltásnál megjegyzés. Azt már nem is említem, hogy persze a néhány kivételtol eltekintve a legtöbben ppt hoztak. Persze egy részük készülhetett OpenOffice-ban is. Mondjuk erre azért fogadnék. Persze volt aki nem ppt-ben hozta és még fel is hívta rá a figyelmet, hogy bezzeg o nem a Microsoft eszközeivel ad elo. Helyette azért egy másik fizetossel sikerült elmondani, hogy milyen jó, hogy nem kerül semmibe az open source. Ami amúgy nagyon jó prezentációs alkalmazás. (Jutalom nélkül, mi lehetett az? Válaszokat ide várom a blogra.) A tartalom, mint mondtam érdekes volt. Persze lenne min vitatkozni, de ezt esetleg majd a konkrét téma kapcsán. Idén nem vettünk részt eloadóként, de szerintem jövore ez már változhat. Az esti program is nagyon jó volt, különösen Soma buvész lenyugözo trükkjei.

  In his blog, JT on EDM, James Taylor shares his analysis of Oracle Data Mining, including its new GUI and Exadata integration. While Oracle Data Mining has been available for a while, it is now easier to access and try via the Amazon Cloud. Using the Oracle 11gR2 Data Mining Amazon Machine Image (AMI), you can launch an Oracle Data Mining-enabled instance directly through Amazon Web Services (AWS) and connect to it using the Oracle Data Miner graphical user interface. The new Oracle Data Mining GUI, which will be available to beta customers soon, provides more graphics, the ability to define, save and share analytical "work flows" to solve business problems, and provides more automation and simplicity. Taylor comments that, "the UI looks to have a nice look and feel including graphical model development flows, easy access to the data, nice little micro graphs when browsing data records and more." On using Oracle Data Mining with Exadata, Taylor writes, "Oracle says that the use of the ODM routines in the Exadata kernel is faster than running a native ODM model in the database by a factor of 2 and that this increases as more joins are used. This could mean that ODM outperforms even third party in-database analytics." Taylor concludes his blog with a positive overall review, stating that "ODM is a nice product for Oracle database customers and well worth looking into. The new UI will only make it more so." However, they don't provide the capability to manage, provision and update an environment once it is up and running. This is where AWS Cloud Formations and Oracle Virtual Assembly Builder comes into play. In a way, these tools/frameworks pick up where AMIs and VM templates leave off. Once again, there a similar offers from AWS and Oracle that compliant and also overlap with each other. Let's start by looking at the definitions: AWS CloudFormation gives developers and systems administrators an easy way to create and manage a collection of related AWS resources, provisioning and updating them in an orderly and predictable fashion. AWS CloudFormations Oracle Virtual Assembly Builder - Oracle Virtual Assembly Builder makes it possible for administrators to quickly configure and provision entire multi-tier enterprise applications onto virtualized and cloud environments. • Can an Employer turn you down if you have said the fact about current work culture being bad [closed]

  I had recently an interview where I scored good in 1st two round of technical interview . Then in the 3rd round was the managerial round where the guy started about my experience and whether I have vaptured any requirement and handled and trained any teams. This went pretty well for around 50 mins . Then there was the awkward question , Interviewer: why amI looking for a change? Me: coz I want to explore my carrier options? Interviewer: But your current company is big enough and you can explore options over there? (This was supposedly the trap) Me: Apart from that I am missing the flexibilty of working with Us and Europe based company as my current company is not that flexible. Interviewer: What exactly you don't find flexible. Me: The login time . Even if you get late by 1sec you might have to explin. Though this is not a big problem , still I will prefer flexibilty as we are working really hard. Interviewer: Allright ( Then couple of more questions) , Hope to C U Ya , that's pretty much it . Now I called up HR and they say , they are yet to get the feedback from Interviewer. Did I screw it? I mean does some one really have to pretend always by saying positive things about company and manager though not saying negative things?

• Ignoring 'A' and 'The' when sorting with XSLT

  I would like to have a list sorted ignoring any initial definite/indefinite articles 'the' and 'a'. For instance: The Comedy of Errors Hamlet A Midsummer Night's Dream Twelfth Night The Winter's Tale I think perhaps in XSLT 2.0 this could be achieved along the lines of: <xsl:template match="/"> <xsl:for-each select="play"/> <xsl:sort select="if (starts-with(title, 'A ')) then substring(title, 2) else if (starts-with(title, 'The ')) then substring(title, 4) else title"/> <p><xsl:value-of select="title"/></p> </xsl:for-each> </xsl:template> However, I want to use in-browser processing, so have to use XSLT 1.0. Is there any way to achieve this in XLST 1.0?

• .htacces - moving all posts in root to a new category

  Could anyone please help me? I am at the last chance saloon and losing a lot of traffic. Any help would be greatfully received. After a year based on my permalink structure, all posts were in the root so have been picked up by Google as: snowmenu.com/postname Since changing my categories and permalink structure, I need the years worth of posts on Google to be redirected to: snowmenu.com/ski-snowboard-winter-sports-news/postname Is there a way to make this happen via .htaccess? • how to handle it if the management just keep on giving me spec after spec non-stop?

  As a programmer, I feel burnt out if the management give me spec after spec, day after day. I think I can code 6 hours a day very focused, but non-stop coding does burn me out a little, especially it is 1 year or 18 months non-stop. A mere 1 week or 2 week vacation per year isn't going to help much. Sometimes I want to take some time to learn new things, or just to take a break for a month so as to re-charge, like back in college when we have holidays for 1 month during winter or 2.5 months during summer. What do you think?

• Really new to XCode. Why won't the thing run?

  Hi, I'm trying to follow the April 2009 and Winter 2010 Stanford iPhone app development videos and I'm running up against the same problems with both. First, they don't appear to be using the latest version of XCode - the Outlets and Actions panels are in a different window and there is little info on the net about this (other than one other post on S.O.F.) Second, having got to the point where I've managed to connect the slider, label and changedLabelText connections, I save, build and run the app - the simulator loads, the app loads and then promptly closes again. What's going on? I have not written any code yet and I still have an app which, while it compiles, does not behave! Is there a better starting point for an XCode noob than the Stanford vids?   Hi, i have a problem, and maybe someone can help me, i will explain... i have the in javascript "var date= new date();" and its give me the local time (browser time) but i want force this data/time for a especific local... for example... Spain. i want everytime that someone enter in the page (from others country) the date need be the spanish hour. i found some soluction but the problem is the summer time and winter time... we have offset variations because some time is +1 hours and others is +2.... someone can help me in one soluction? thanks [email protected]

• Is there an algorithm for determining how much daylight there is?

  Is there a function/algorithm that allows me to input the latitude and the approximate orbital position of the earth in so that I can determine how long the sun is up? IE during the winter it would show that the sun is only up a few hours in the far north hemisphere. I did some basic Google search and didn't find much so I was thinking that I might have to do some trigonometry that would allow me to calculate how much the earth is inclined or not toward the sun then use that information along with the latitude to figure out how much sunshine a site would be getting.

• How to call split(token) on a string that does not contain the token without causing an error?

  I have two types of strings as the IDs of elements in my HTML markup: Dates: "april-23" "march-20" and season names: "springtime" "winter" The dates have a dash separating the month and the day. The seasons are a single word with no other tokens. I want to assign the month or the season to a new variable called: time_of_year If I do this: var time_of_year = $(this).attr("id").split('-')[0]; It will work on the months but if I call it on a season name which does not contain the token, will it generate an error? What's the safe way to do this?

I have a text file named 'textt.txt' that looks like this: South East asia,2222,code1 winter break,3333,code2 my php code looks like this: <?php $x = file_get_contents('textt.txt'); $y = explode("\r\n", $x); $z = $y[0]; echo $z; ?> the outcome of this is: South East asia,2222,code1 I would like it to return only: South East Asia. Because we loved .NET Reflector when Lutz Roeder wrote and nurtured it, and, like many other .NET developers, used it as a development tool ourselves, .NET Reflector's progress from being the apple of Lutz's eye to being a Red-Gate team-based development  seemed natural.  Lutz, after all, eventually felt he couldn't afford the time to develop it to the extent it deserved. Why, then, did we want to take on .NET Reflector?  Different people may give you different answers, but for us in the .NET team, it just seemed a natural progression. We're always very surprised when anyone suggests that we want to change the nature of the tool since it seems right just as it is. .NET Reflector will stay very much the tool we all use and appreciate, although the new version will support .NET 4, and will have many improvements in the accuracy of its decompiling. Whilst we've made a lot of improvements to Reflector, the radical addition, which we hope you'll want to try out as well, is '.NET Reflector Pro'. This is an extension to .NET Reflector that allows the debugging of decompiled code using the Visual Studio debugger. • Friday Fun: Factory Balls – Christmas Edition

  Your weekend is almost here, but until the work day is over we have another fun holiday game for you. This week your job is to correctly decorate/paint the ornaments that go on the Christmas tree. Simple you say? Maybe, but maybe not! Factory Balls – Christmas Edition The object of the game is to correctly decorate/paint each Christmas ornament exactly as shown in the “sample image” provided for each level. What starts off as simple will quickly have you working to figure out the correct combination or sequence to complete each ornament. Are you ready? The first level serves as a tutorial to help you become comfortable with how to decorate/paint the ornaments. To move an ornament to a paint bucket or cover part of it with one of the helper items simply drag the ornament towards that area. The ornament will automatically move back to its’ starting position when the action is complete. First, a nice coat of red paint followed by covering the middle area with a horizontal belt. Once the belt is on move the ornament to the bucket of yellow paint. Next, you will need to remove the belt, so move the ornament back to the belt’s original position. One ornament finished! As soon as you complete decorating/painting an ornament, you move on to the next level and will be shown the next “sample Image” in the upper right corner. Starting with a coat of orange paint sounds good… Pop the little serrated edge cap on top… Add some blue paint… Almost have it… Place the large serrated edge cap on top… Another dip in the orange paint… And the second ornament is finished. Level three looks a little bit tougher…just work out your pattern of helper items & colors and you will definitely get it! Have fun decorating/painting those ornaments! Note: Starting with level four you will need to start using a combination of two helper items combined at times to properly complete the ornaments.
