  • Fix bad blocks on Mac hard disk

    I have a hard disk that I scanned with TechTool and it reports one bad block. As far as I can tell, TechTool only scans and reports a failure. It doesn't fix anything. Back in the day, Norton Disk Doctor did the job of scanning and flagging (remapping) bad blocks on the Mac. Today we have various tools for fixing up HFS+ directory errors (Disk Utility, fsck, DiskWarrior, TechTool), but I don't know of any tool that will do a surface scan and fix the bad blocks too. What software is available for this? If I know the address of the bad block, is there a low-level terminal utility for marking it?

  • System fans connected to a Gigabyte Z77-D3H motherboard do not increase in speed

    The motherboard (Gigabyte Z77-D3H) controls my 3-pin CPU fan just fine. My system fans are a 3-pin fan (plugged into SYS_FAN1), and a 4-pin fan plugged into SYS_FAN3. All 3 of the system fan headers are 4-pin, but the user manual states that SYS_FAN1 is really a 3-pin header (that it can control the speed of a 3-pin fan) and the 4th pin is just a reserve. All my fans have a max RPM of 2000. Normally, all the fans run around 1000 RPMs when I'm not doing anything intensive. This proves that the motherboard can set the speed. However,when I run Folding@Home and my temperatures increase (around 70C) only the CPU fan increases to around 2000 RPMs. The system fans stay around 1000 RPMs. Through the BIOS I am able to disable the system fan control and the system fans then run at max RPMs (meaning the motherboard was doing something). I've updated the BIOS to the latest version and tried out Speedfan, but neither helped my situation. What I'd like is for the system fans to ramp up their RPMs as needed. Any thoughts? Tl;dr: My system (case) fans, but not my CPU fan, are always stuck around 1000 RPMs out of 2000 no matter the temperature.

  • transaction log shipping sql server 2005 to 2008

    I have a reporting setup with SSRS on our sql server 2005 database. Because sql server 2008 is not supported by the main program which populates our database we are stuck with 2005 on our prod database. Unfortunately when I run our weekly check reports the web interface constantly times out because the server cant do the conversion to PDF. I've read that sql server 2008's SSRS is ALOT better with memory management. I was wondering if I can do some kind transact log shipping subscription publication from 2005 to 2008? Am I chasing a dream here. Currently I have to open up the ssrs project in visual studio and run the reports inside because it doesn't ever time out when doing the pdf conversion, only times out if I try to run it through the ssis web interface.

  • Fedora 9 not reconizing hard drive

    I am installing Fedora 9 to a PC (specifications at the bottom) and have had a lot of trouble with it recognising the hard drive. To get the Fedora installer to recognize it in the first place I had to pass "ata_generic.all_generic_ide=1 pci=nomsi" to the kernel, after which it installed OK. However, now when I boot the installed OS, I get a "could not find filesystem '/dev/root'" error. I tried passing the same arguments to the kernel at boot as I did when installing but to no avail. I have tried using the default LVM layout and defining manual ones but it made no difference. There is no option in the BIOS to enable AHCI or anything like that, in fact the BIOS is very limited in most respects. I can get into the system by using the installation CD in rescue mode (with those extra kernal parameters) but I'm not sure what to do once in there... Unfortunately using a more recent version of Fedora or even another Linux distribution altogether isn't an option becuase of outside constraints - which is annoying since I know for a fact Ubuntu works fine on this setup. I have not been using Linux that long, so treat me like an idiot - I am one. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!   • Why won't 2GB of ram across 3 of 4 slots work on my motherboard (max 2GB)?

    My desktop is an old home-built machine circa 200[5-6] running Ubuntu 11.10 (but this is not relevant because I'm reading available ram from BIOS loading screen), with an ASUS P5GPL motherboard, not X or X-SE - it has four slots. I'm mainly a laptop person, but keep this around for running a server from if needed, backing up to, seeding Ubuntu to people from, etc… It has four (DDR) ram slots, two black and two blue, in the order black-blue-black-blue (I will call them D, C, B, and A, respectively) with some space in the middle. The blue ones are the closest to the processor. I used to have two 512MB chips in the two blue slots. I just got a 1GB chip and plugged it into one of the black slots; my system didn't recognize it. I messed around and discovered that it will not recognize chips in many positions, and I couldn't get it to recognize all three of these chips at the same time. In particular, if I put the 512MB chips in A and B it would only use 1, but AC, AD, BD, and CD worked. I didn't try BC, I believe. Only some of these continue to work when I switch the 1GB chip into one of these positions. Can I have some advice as to how to position these chips to get all 2GB used? How about if I get another 1GB chip - where should I put the two? And what about the RAM maximum Crucial says? Can I go above 2GB, if I get another 1GB chip? Right now, I have a 512MB chip in A and the 1GB chip in C. EDIT: I read some other posts and tried dmidecode in Ubuntu to clarify the max memory question, that wasn't a major part anyways. It says my max memory module size is 1024M (OK) and my max memory size is 4096M (doesn't agree with Crucial OR the Asus web site, maybe it will only work while in Linux and BIOS won't OK it?).

  • How to show window contents while dragging in Windows Server 2008 R2?

    I just installed Windows Server 2008 R2, including the Desktop Experience feature, and activated the Themes service. I've activated Aero. I have everything there, except that when I drag windows, I only see the border of the window as I'm dragging. In other/older SKUs of Windows, there was a checkbox that I think said "Show Window Contents While Dragging", but I can't find such a checkbox on this OS.

    I've noticed one of my server is sending mass spam. The messages are like the one below (sending from: [email protected]). I've deleted USER_ACCOUNT but I'd like to know how can I identify the script (probably a hacked PHP script) that sends the mass mail considering this server hosts numerous websites.   • How to disable augroup in vim?

    I understand that in my vimrc I can add autocmd, and I can group them into augroup. Once they are grouped, what can I do with the group? Specifically, is there a way to disable the whole group at once? Looking at the help, I only see two options: augroup! will delete the whole group: I don't think this is right since I will want to re-enable it again. Searching for "aucmd" and "disable" brings up eventignore, but this looks like it's for specific events like CursorMoved, BufWinLeave, etc. and not the command or the group itself. How is this done?

  • Windows 8 Radeon update broke some games

    I've been using Windows 8 Consumer Preview 32-bit on my desktop for months, and recently did a software update through Windows Update. An update for my Radeon HD 5450 driver (Catalyst) to WDDM 1.2 was in the list of updates, and installed. When I went to play CS:GO and discovered that when loaded, it would not display the GUI (menus, sometimes even the background) after a few seconds of flickering GUI. I can still navigate the menus 'by feel' and connect to and play on servers, but have no GUI, no buy menu, no map, no cross-hairs, no health indicator, etc. I have tried CS:S, which works, and Borderlands, which doesn't even load the intro videos before the first menu screen. I've tried re-installing Catalyst from the AMD website, and the beta, and tried uninstalling and reinstalling CS:GO. The problem with it (and Borderlands) still happen. What broke, and how can I fix it? I'll be reinstalling soon anyway to dump Windows 8 back to 7, but would like to be able to game until then.

  • Windows 2008 R2 forgets static IP configuration after reboot

    I've got an issue where a Windows 2008 R2 Standard (SP1) server loses its static IP configuration upon a reboot. It's a sysprep'd image. The following steps reproduces the problem: Using the SAC, set the IP using 'i' Use the Win32 EnableStatic() method to set an IP (and then SetGateways()) through PowerShell Reboot The machine boots up with the following configuration: Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : [...] Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.152.31 (incorrect) Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0 (incorrect, was set to /24) Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 1.1.1.1 (correct) Occasionally, the gateway is also incorrect (0.0.0.0) The images have a script that runs 'netsh int ip reset' after sysprep finishes (before the reboot), so it appears that does not solve the issue. (the problem also happens without this step) After the reboot, using 'i' on the SAC resolves the issue permanently. (But I'd like to know the root cause as having to run 'i' again isn't ideal)

  • Photo/Video gallery for Ubuntu web server

    I'm trying to have a gallery that can display images as well as videos for visitors to my web server. I'm running Ubuntu 12.10, and have Apache installed. All my images and videos are in /var/www/media. I've taken a look at bbgallery, which is simple enough for me, but I don't think it supports video. I've also looked at Single File PHP Gallery, but it doesn't support video. Does anyone know of a gallery that supports video as well, which I can use for my web server? EDIT: I do not have a database.

If possible, I'd like to still have XMPP on this domain, but have it connect to another IP (configured to support the first domain) without user intervention. I'm using ejabberd on the second server, if that helps.

  • Graphics and USB devices freezing soon after OS loads

    I run Ubuntu/Windows dual boot. Last night I started the upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04, and my computer has not worked since in either Windows or Ubuntu. Here's what I got when I rebooted after the upgrade, and continue to get every time I boot: Gets to GRUB screen OK. Choose Ubuntu - black screen or crazy purple lines. At first I assumed something went wrong with the upgrade (often happens). Choose Windows - works fine, I log in, but soon after that the graphics freeze (sometimes with purple artifacts). The keyboard and mouse (both USB) also lose power at the same instant, and none of the USB ports have power to them. This happens sooner or later every time I boot. Update: the HDD also appears to lose power at the same point. I have tried a live CD, but my computer refuses to boot any CD even after disabling all other boot options in the BIOS. I have disconnected everything except keyboard, mouse, graphics card with one monitor, one RAM sick and HDD; no change. I also took the little battery out to reset CMOS. I am pretty sure no matter how wrong the Ubuntu upgrade went, it wouldn't cause the above symptoms in Windows. So the only explanation I can think of is that a hardware failure occurred at the same time. Some possible causes of this I can think of are: A couple of days before this, I added a third screen (which worked fine). About a week before, my house lost power in a storm (no ill effects over the past few days though). What can I do, other than buy a new motherboard/CPU and hope it works? Unfortunately I don't have another box to swap parts into to test at the moment.

  • Neophyte question about using Subtotal and CountIf in Excel

    Hi, I'm using Excel and having some problems with Countif and I don't understand how it works differently from SubTotal. I used the GUI to subtotal stuff and all the subtotals are right. Then I attempted to use the Countif to see how many requirements passed. That worked for the first subtotal only. It's easy to see why. When I look at the box for the subtotal, it says: =SUBTOTAL(3,C286:C292) When I look at my formula for passed requirements, I have: =IF(ISTEXT(A285),COUNTIF(C286:C338,"=Passed"),"") Notice that the last column is wrong. How did the Subtotal manage to keep this correct? I typed in the formula for passed requirements and dragged it down the page. Everything behaved as expected (even the bit about ISTEXT dutifully figured out which row was which), but it got the last row wrong. Any ideas?   • windows 7 crash during hibernation

    At times, when I hibernate my Dell Latitude e6400 with Windows 7 (64 bit), the laptop screen goes black as it should, but then it takes several minutes before it powers down. Then, when I attempt to "resume," Windows boots up from a fresh startup, with all my work lost, and tells me that it's recovered from a serious error. What can I do to resolve this problem? Other background info: -I got a new hard drive with plenty of space about a year ago; I only use a small fraction of that space. This sometimes happens when I don't have any programs running at all. If it's relevant, I do have Dropbox and OneDrive running in the background, though. -The problem usually occurs when I hibernate just after I unplug from an external monitor to bring my laptop home, but I believe it happens at other times, too.   • Creating an interactive "movie" from a Microsoft PowerPoint 2003 presentation (.ppt file) containing animation

    I have created a Microsoft PowerPoint 2003 presentation (a .ppt file) on Windows XP that contains a lot of animation, using PowerPoint's Custom Animation tools. I would like to share this presentation -- animations and all -- with a colleague who has a Mac computer and does not have PowerPoint or Keynote. Is it possible to make a "movie" from my .ppt file that contains a lot of animation? I recall that another colleague once made me a QuickTime "movie" from a PowerPoint file, I think (although I do not remember whether he made it using Windows or Mac). On this "movie," clicking advanced the animation/slide, just as clicking would do in an actual PowerPoint presentation. In that sense, it was not really strictly a movie, since I could interact with it by clicking. Do you know how to make such an interactive "movie" from a PowerPoint 2003 presentation (a .ppt file)?   • USB key to pass password in Centos 6

    I had a room mate that put a livecd in my desktop and looked around on my machine. I caught him in the act and threw him out. I haven't had a room mate for a while now and so as to avoid the livecd issue again I encrypted the hard drive, the machine is running centos 6.3. Is there anyway that I can avoid typing the password in each time if I have usb key in the machine to feed the password to the system? Additional question. Is there anything you can suggest to solve the problem I have ? Thanks
