• I need advice on how to best handle an e-commerce situation

  I recently moved to Brazil and started a small subscription based service company. The payment gateway market is under-developed in Brazil, and implementing a local solution is too expensive for me. My requirements are a payment gateway that will automatically process monthly recurrent billing, and that will allow me to manually charge my customers when needed. They would also have to deal with storage and security. I'm leaning towards manually processing payments myself as a restaurant would do, for example, using small swipe machines. Unfortunately, this would require me to store credit card information and I would rather not, but I feel it's my only option. Can anyone give me advice on how to tackle this problem? Do I have other options? If I decide to store credit card information, what should I keep in mind and how should I go about it? I have moderate skills in programming, and through tenacity I can get most things done. I'm afraid that this might be out of my league, however.

• Xubuntu 14.04 with Compton, strange screen tearing, only when playing videos though (advice needed)

  Hello beloved community, Yet again I am in need of your great expertise. I ran into a very strange issue and just can't wrap my mind around it. I'm running Xubuntu 14.04 exclusively, with Compton installed. The OS runs great and I have absolutely no screen tearing when I move my windows around, scroll in my web browser, work in Gimp or Photoshop (wine) or even when I play very graphic demanding games, like Metro Last Light, Euro Truck Driver 2 and so on. There's not a tiny bit of tearing to see, but as soon as I play videos, in xbmc, vlc or parole media player the tearing begins (strangely enough this does not apply to youtube videos). I followed all available workarounds on askubuntu and the ubuntu forum,like the 50-xserver-command.conf, startx /etc/X11/Xsession /usr/bin/xbmc-standalone -- -bs or libsdl1.2debian fix and many more, but to no avail. I also tried the Open Source Nouveau display drivers as well, but for some odd reason they don't work so great on my system or at least with my graphics card. Even with Compton installed and configured, I have an extreme amount of screen tearing, as soon as I switch to the proprietary Nvidia drives the screen tearing is gone completely, except for the video playback with xbmc, vlc or parole media player. System info for your reference: OS: Xubuntu 14.04 Linux-x86_64 - Processor: Intel Core i7-4770S CPU @ 3.10GHz - Ram: 16 GB - GeForce GT 750M 1024 MB - Nvidia Driver: 331.38 Has anyone experienced such an odd issue or do you have any advice on how I could fix this? • Domain Transfer Protection - need advice

  Hey, I am about to purchase a domain name for a bit of money. I do not personally know the person who I am purchasing the domain name from, we have only chatted via email. The proposed process for the transfer is: The owner of the domain lowest the domain name security and emails me the domain password, I request the transfer After the request, I transfer the money via PayPal When the money has been cleared the current domain name owner confirms the transfer via the link that he receives in that email I wait for it to be transferred. The domain is currently registered with DirectNIC - http://www.directnic.com/ Is this the best practice? Seeing I am paying a bit of money for this domain name, I am worried that after the money has been cleared that I won't see the domain name or hear from the current domain name owner again. Is there a 'domain governing body' which I can report to if this is the case? Is the proposed transfer process the best solution? Any advice would be awesome. Thanks! Jack

• Advice on choosing a book to read

  I would like to ask for some recommendations on useful books to read. Initially I had intended on posting quite a long description of my current issue and asking for advice. But I realised that I didn’t have a clear idea of what I wanted to ask. One thing that is clear to me is that my knowledge in various areas needs improving and reading is one method of doing that. Though choosing the right book to read seems like a task in itself when there are so many books out there. I am a programmer but I also deal with analysis, design & testing. So I am not sure what type of book to read. One option might be to work through two books at the same time. I had thought maybe one about design or practices and another of a more technical focus. Recently I came across one book that I thought might be useful to read: http://xunitpatterns.com/index.html It seems like an interesting book, but the comments I read on amazon.co.uk show that the book is probably longer than it needs to be. Has anyone read it and can comment on this? • Advice and resources on collaborative environments

  I need some advice on collaborative software environments. More specifically, I am looking for books and reference materials that can aid me in understanding team and code structures and the interactions thereof. In other words books, blogs or white papers explaining: Different strategies for structuring teams that share common code between each other but have distinct individual functions? To summarise my question I would like to know what would be a good source of knowledge if I were to set up teams in an organisation that shared code but each unit still remained autonomous. I have done some research on this subject and explored: code review tools, distributed VCS, continuous integration tools, Unit testing automation. The tough part about implementing these tools are to determine where a good place would be to start, which tools are low hanging fruit, which tools or methods provide higher success rates. If someone asks me about code quality reference I point them to Code Complete. I am looking for an equivalent guide on software team structures and tools to make this equation work better. I realise that this question is quite vague but it arose as "we need to share code between teams without breaking each others stuff and causing management headaches and reams of red tape" The answer is definitely not simple and requires changes on many levels, hence the question. If the question is too vague please vote to close or delete. I would accept any good starting point as an answer.

• Compensation advice on overseas contract with former employer [closed]

  I work as a full time developer in the US. My previous employer from 3 years ago has sold a large startup project in Russia for next month, however their three and only senior developers have recently resigned. I still have somewhat intricate knowledge of the software to be installed since I was the original author, so my former employer, in somewhat of a panic, has asked if I can take two weeks vacation from my current job to fly to Russia and lead the startup. Logistically, I can do this and my current employer agreed without issue. Said former employer is very small and hasn't hired contractors before, and I haven't contracted either. The company simply asked my what my salary requirements are. I had, and still have, a great professional relationship with the owners. I feel like I'm doing this as a favor in a way. Payment is guaranteed, but I have no idea what I should bill for overseas work. If it matters, I was paid around 110k at the former employer. Just looking for some advice. There are many contracting salary threads here, but I feel that the overseas work throws a twist in things. Thank you!

  I am looking for some advice on the next step to take in development of my programming skills. I was directed here when asking this question on Stack Overflow. What I know already Have a solid grasp of xhtml, xml, php, javascript, MySQL, actionscript. Have a working knowledge of vb, and have a slight grasp of java from tinkering with a minecraft server. Some brief exposure to the Unreal Engine in college. Some skills with sql server, ms sql, office integration, etc. Also some knowledge of Asterix and PBX/VOIP. Been coding off and on since the age of 8 but I have no computer science education aside from what I have taught myself or learned from work/freelance. I work in OSX mostly, but can use/troubleshoot windows and ubuntu fluently also. Decent with both UNIX and DOS CLI. What I'm considering I'm looking to learn a scripting language to build web apps, help streamline my home server that I am building and run shell scripts. Being able to help code games later is a big plus. My Question Between java, ruby, perl, and python, which would be the best investment of my time considering what I already know and what direction I would like to take my skillset? What are good resources for your suggested direction? Thanks in advance.

  In the WIX setup I've got, when upgrading the application I have set a requirement to close down applications which might hold on to files which needs to be updated: <util:CloseApplication Id="CloseMyApp" Target="[MyAppExe]" CloseMessage="no" Description="!(loc.MyAppStillRunning)" RebootPrompt="no" ElevatedCloseMessage="no" /> The application on the other hand will capture closing down the window with a "user friendly" dialog box where the user can confirm that he or she wants to close down the application. I've experienced problems with the CloseApplication, and one theory is that the dialog box stops the application from closing. So the question is: Could this be a possible problem? If so - how can I have this confirmation dialog box and still behave properly when the installer asks the application to close down? Must I listen to Win32 messages (such as WM_QUIT/WM_CLOSE) or is there a .NET API which I can use to respond properly to these events?

On Win XP X86 it is working fine, but on X64 after 3 to 4 minutes System generates StackOverflowException and causes the application to hang. after removing this check application is working fine.. • Facebook tab application scripting

  I have a web application that I am trying to port to Facebook. The app uses a few external javascript files. So initially I wanted to create an iframe Facebook application. However, it turns out that you cannot use iframes when creating a tab application(which is a requirement). By tab application I mean placing your app on the profile page next to the wall, info, photos, ect. tabs. Does any one know of a good tool to help convert my javascript to the FBJS scripting? Or better yet does anyone have a work around so that I can include my own javascript in this tabbed application? Thanks for the help.

• Restart Delphi Application Programmatically

  It should not be possible to run multiple instances of my application. Therefore the project source contains: CreateMutex (nil, False, PChar (ID)); if (GetLastError = ERROR_ALREADY_EXISTS) then Halt; Now I want to restart my application programmatically. The usual way would be: AppName := PChar(Application.ExeName) ; ShellExecute(Handle,'open', AppName, nil, nil, SW_SHOWNORMAL) ; Application.Terminate; But this won't work in my case because of the mutex. Even if I release the mutex before starting the second instace it won't work because shutdown takes some time and two instance cannot run in parallel (because of common resources and other effects). Is there a way to restart an application with such characteristics? (If possible without an additional executable) Thanks in advance.

  I'm really new to Facebook application development, and I'm quite confused about application permissions and why the php sdk is so limiting and has so few precoded functions. First off, how do I check if a user has set proper permissions for my application, and if not, display that standard dialog immediately instead of using FBML and making them click the link? Secondly, how do I publish to a user's stream with the php apis? Finally, are there any good tutorial sites for making a php based canvas application that use the latest versions of all the sdks? Thank you for your help! I really don't see why so much of this is Javascript, it would really make much more sense to me to have things like: if(!$facebook->appHasPerm('publish_stream'){$facebook->showPermDialog('publish_stream');} I'd feel like I have much more control over the application if it worked like that.

  What is the best practice or advice for a programmer's CV? If I were a graphic designer or more of a web designer as opposed to a programmer, then I'd imagine a CV would have a bit more flourish to it. Yet as a programmer, aren't we judged on not only efficiency and results but also creativity, imagination and initiative? Should this be reflected in a CV? Or is it all about the information, no wishy washy designs in sight? Has anyone experimented with an original alternative to a PDF CV with a template from MS Word or Mac Pages?

I have already done some end projects: Small Java Platform Game A Small Polynomial Solver A Small Image Sharing Site A Chess Website: chesslounge.net I am currently doing some Android Development and so far I have made a program that Vibrates, Blinks the Light, or Creates a custom status message based on the user input. • Any tips to learn how to program with severe ADHD?

  I have a difficult time trying to learn how to program from straight text-books. Video training seems to work well for me in my past experiences with PHP. I am trying my hardest to stay focussed and push through. Specifically I am looking to start indie game development. Over the last two weeks I have been trying to pick the "right" language and framework to develop with. I started going through Python, but I am not really enjoying the language so far. I am constantly looking through this website to compare this language to that, and keep getting distracted. Aside from all of this, is it possible to become a programmer when you have trouble focussing? • Should I learn GWT (I'm a Java newb) if I eventually want to learn JavaScript and related libraries?

  I haven't been working with Java for a long time, and I found GWT to be interesting plus a chance to learn and practice Java. My goal for this year is to learn JavaScript. I'm very interested in HTML5, browser extensions and other cool stuff that JavaScript can do. I think I'm more interested in this than Java at the moment (that's not to say I dislike or would discontinue working with Java) but I would like advice as to whether it's a good idea to proceed with learning GWT (given my interest in JavaScript) or to spend my time learning other Java technology. I have all the relevant skills and knowledge to complete the project, but I am concerned about getting screwed over because this is my first time working on a consultant basis. We have already agreed on an hourly wage that I'm happy with, so that's not an issue. • IIS 7 Using Domain Account for Application pool identity Invalid Password

  I have an asp.net website containing a WCF service that I am developing on a Windows 7 machine hosted with IIS 7. I am needing to connect to an instance of Reporting Services 2005 with the service, and have been getting 401 errors when trying to execute reports. So, I assume that I need to be running the IIS Application pool under a domain account. The problem is that when I try to change the identity to a domain account, I get the error message "The specified password is invalid. Type a new password." I've rechecked the password multiple times to make sure it is correct. The account I'm using has admin rights on the machine. I saw elsewhere to try running this command: aspnet_regiis.exe -GA domain\username which I did but it didn't help. What else do I need to do?

• Is there any online web application for daily activity logs [closed]

  I am looking for daily calendar-like apps, but ones that have some text editor attached for every day. All I want to do is that when I open that page, it should open the text editor for that day and I could enter some data of what I have accomplished, then save it. The next day I'd like it so when I open the application, then I can go to new page, but I have all of the previous day's data to have a look at what I have done. Something like Google calendar, but I need an associated text editor to paste some notes, stuff, etc. on a daily basis with logs.

• Web application and remote storage of files

  Hi have a web application that can store lots and lots of files on the server. i.e. users upload data to it. The files are stored below a particular storage path. The web host will be an IBM xseries 345. However, the disks are really expensive so we would like to put the files onto a less expensive server. Now here is the question. Should I use an NFS mount on the IBM server of a path on the storage server? Or should I write some scripts to upload the files to the storage server instead. Both the storage server and the web host are on the same network. Only the web server is visible to the world. Is NFS performance suitable for an expected low to moderately loaded server?
