  • How does one debug Windows network share authentication?

    I have machine0 with 32-bit Vista, logged in as a domain user, running a VMWare image of 32-bit Vista, logged in as a local user, with the VM set to bridge the network. From an administrator account (called admin) within the VM, I try to access the hidden C$ share on machine0 (i.e. start - run - "\\machine0\C$\"). I get no prompts for credentials. Worse, machine0 has an admin account (different password), and machine0\admin gets locked out when VM\admin tries to access the network share. I get a message several seconds later, which feels like a cached credential failure leading to the lockout. I have checked several places for cached credentials; net use, Stored Usernames and Passwords, mapped shares. I rebooted (both machine0 and VM) to make sure the session was clear of any cached credentials. I can force net use to use my domain credentials when accessing machine0, and then I can see the share. I can also see shares that do not require credentials. I decided to try another machine on the network (machine1), 64-bit Vista, local user. This machine has no lockout policy, and after several seconds (feels like failed cached credentials again) it prompts me for credentials. After I enter them, it re-prompts me, saying "logon unsuccessful" (tried my domain credentials, and also machine1\admin's). Which is bogus, because I proceed to log on with remote desktop using the machine1\admin credentials. I have tried this on another machine (machine2, 64-bit Vista), running a copy of the same 32-bit VM, and I don't remember having this problem. machine0 has a fingerprint reader...could that try storing passwords and interfere? Are there any places I'm missing where there could be cached credentials? Is there a way to see what credentials are flying around when I try to connect?

  • Unwanted forced authentication after server restart (Win 2k3)

    We're running a Win 2k3 R2 Standard 64-bit edition server. On this server we're running a fileserver and the ability to allow remote login to our network through vpn. We do not currently utilize a domain setup, all user accounts are local accounts on the server. Each employee is given a unique account to login to the server. The password is a randomly generated 16 character long string, which makes it hard to remember. What we've done is basicly had the password stored on the client machine (standard "Remember Me" functionality). This has worked well. However, last night our server automatically restarted after an automatic update. After that, some of our employees, myself included, had to re-authenticate with the server, submitting our credentials again. Then again, some others did not have to re-authenticate. Do you guys have any idea why this is? Is there a setting to prevent this? I've checked the logs but I couldn't find anything of interest. Then again I'm not really sure what I'm looking for. Thanks in advance, I'll try to answer any additional questions you may have. Edit: When I say "login" or "authenticate" I mean through the standard windows samba protocol. Edit 2: Ok, new day. Tonight the server restarted again, and the same two clients that had to re-authenticate yesterday had to re-authenticate today as well. The rest did not.

    I have a front end server acting as a gateway proxy for many (a dynamic 'many') building monitors with embedded webservers. They are accessed with a URL like: http://www.example.com/monitor1/ http://www.example.com/monitor2/ ... I'm trying to restrict access to these monitors to only the users that own them. So what I need is a way of specifying rights to users or groups for specific directories. The standard auth mechanisms I see in Apache won't work because I need to specify every location. I'd prefer some dynamic map or script. Any suggestions?

    I created custom membership provider for asp.net mvc applications and it all works fine except one thing: when logged in to my application, I am also logged in to all other asp.net mvc applications that I run using Visual Studio. I suppose this data is being pulled from cache because when I logout and try to login again in other application, I'm being rejected.   • Creating a Linq->HQL provider

    Hi all, I have a client application that connects to a server. The server uses hibernate for persistence and querying so it has a set of annotated hibernate objects for persistence. The client sends HQL queries to the server and gets responses back. The client has an auto-generated set of objects that match the server hibernate objects for query results and basic persistence. I would like to support using Linq to query as well as Hql as it makes the queries typesafe and quicker to build (no more typos in HQL string queries). I've looked around at the following but I can't see how to get them to fit with what I have. NHibernate's Linq provider - requires using NHibernate ISession and ISessionFactory, which I don't have LinqExtender - requires a lot of annotations on the objects and extending a base type, too invasive What I really want is something that will generate give me a nice easy to process structure to build the HQL queries from. I've read most of a 15 page article written by one of the C# developers on how to create custom providers and it's pretty fraught, mainly because of the complexity of the expression tree. Can anyone suggest an approach for implementing Linq - HQL translation? Perhaps a library that will the cleanup of the expression tree into something more SQL/HQLish. I would like to support select/from/where/group by/order by/joins. Not too worried about subqueries.

IIS 7.0 impersonates a fixed user account when attempting to process the request (for example, to read the file off the hard disk). So, what is the fixed user account impersonated by IIS? Where can I see it? If I don't know what this account is, how could I assign proper permissions for the clients who are authenticated as anonymous users? Thanks.

    I have a MVC application that I am now trying to add authentication and authorization to. I want to allow users to get to the site and be automatically authenticated. So I set authentication mode="Windows" in the web.config, and enabled NTLM in the project options. The site now shows my domain name in the top right when I run it, but when I hit a action than needs DB access, it tells me access is denied for my user-name? What step am I missing?

    Hi, I'd like to implement a REST api to an existing ASP.NET MVC website. I've managed to set up WCF Data services so that I can browse my data, but now the question is how to handle authentication. Right now the data service is secured via the site's built in forms authentication, and that's ok when accessing the service from AJAX forms. However, It's not ideal for a RESTful api. What I would like as an alternative to forms authentication is for the users to simply embed the user name and password into the url to the web service or as request parameters. For example, if my web service is usually accessible as http://localhost:1234/api.svc I'd like to be able to access it using the url http://localhost:1234/api.svc/{login}/{password} So, my questions are as follows: Is this a sane approach? If yes, how can I implement this? It seems trivial redirecting GET requests so that the login and password are attached as GET parameters. I also know how to inspect the http context and use those parameters to filter the results. But I am not sure if / how the same approach could be applied to POST, PUT and DELETE requests.     I'm trying to use unix user/group database as security realm of hudson. The linux server is using NIS for user management. My account could login the hudson server via ssh. And the hudson server is running by user 'hudson' that is also a member of group 'shadow', so hudson could read /etc/shadow.
