  • Co-worker renamed all of my queries

    I don't know if I should be very irritated or what. I single handedly built over 300 queries for a large database, and developed a naming convention so I could find them later. No one else in my office even knows how to build a query, but I came in yesterday to find that all of them had been renamed. I am now having a very hard time finding things, and I am trying to figure out what to do. I spoke with the person responsible, and she just downplayed the whole thing. She said she renamed them so she can find them more easily. Unfortunately, I am the only one who knows how to build, edit, and maintain them, and the only reason she needed to find them was to test the queries. The new naming convention doesn't make sense at all, and I feel like we have taken a backwards step in the development process. What I'm trying to figure out is: 1) Am I overreacting? 2) What is the best way to handle this? I hate to mention this to my boss, but after speaking with my co-worker yesterday, I can already tell she feels like she did nothing wrong.

  • Asynchronous background processes in Python?

    I have been using this as a reference, but not able to accomplish exactly what I need: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/89228/how-to-call-external-command-in-python/92395#92395 I also was reading this: http://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-3145/ For our project, we have 5 svn checkouts that need to update before we can deploy our application. In my dev environment, where speedy deployments are a bit more important for productivity than a production deployment, I have been working on speeding up the process. I have a bash script that has been working decently but has some limitations. I fire up multiple 'svn updates' with the following bash command: (svn update /repo1) & (svn update /repo2) & (svn update /repo3) & These all run in parallel and it works pretty well. I also use this pattern in the rest of the build script for firing off each ant build, then moving the wars to Tomcat. However, I have no control over stopping deployment if one of the updates or a build fails. I'm re-writing my bash script with Python so I have more control over branches and the deployment process. I am using subprocess.call() to fire off the 'svn update /repo' commands, but each one is acting sequentially. I try '(svn update /repo) &' and those all fire off, but the result code returns immediately. So I have no way to determine if a particular command fails or not in the asynchronous mode. import subprocess subprocess.call( 'svn update /repo1', shell=True ) subprocess.call( 'svn update /repo2', shell=True ) subprocess.call( 'svn update /repo3', shell=True ) I'd love to find a way to have Python fire off each Unix command, and if any of the calls fails at any time the entire script stops.

  • Background image layout issue

    A client wants to have an image that takes up entire screen, on mouse over the menu would appear. The problem is the height vertical alignment for various screen sizes....What would be the most common sleek looking solution to this issue? Let's assume that the most common screen resolution for the site's audience is 1024x768 but it should look good on smaller resolutions too (specifically for laptops). Thanks!

The gradient on the footer looks great in non IE browsers, but fails to show in IE 7,8 and the dev preview. Any ideas?

As for now, I use cron that works every minute and activates a task that repeats itself every 5 seconds with sleeps between, for a minute. However, it works also when the application isn't being used. Is there a gem that will do this kind of thing?

    Hi all, I have an to set background image. it is a red line under the input value. background-attachment:scroll; background-color:#FFFFFF; background-image:url("../images/errorLine.gif"); background-position:left bottom; background-repeat:repeat-x; the input value is like "123; 456; 789;". the red line cover all the string, its length is the same as the input width.     A certain function in my controller takes a lot of time to process (heavy db work) . So when my user clicks on "submit" on the form he has to wait for the process to complete which is quite long.   • Microphone - static background noise suppression

    My soundcard is Realtek ALC 892. On Windows 7 I use official Realtek drivers, on Linux I use PulseAudio (on Ubuntu 13.10). On both Windows and Linux, when I enable microphone boost +30db (required because my microphone is quiet), I get very annoying and loud background noise (I also confirmed the background noise with Audacity on both systems). However, Windows Realtek drivers have noise suppression option which works (after enabling it, Audacity shows no background noise and my ears also confirm that there is no background noise). My question is how can I enable background noise suppression in ALSA/PulseAudio? Is there any module I can install or maybe there is a setting for it that can be enabled in config file? I can't find solution for it and this is the only thing that prevents me from switching to Linux completely - as I talk using microphone a lot and on Windows the Realtek software removes the background noise completely and PulseAudio doesn't remove it, which means the recorded voice on Linux is very bad. I know I could buy better soundcard and microphone, but as I said, Windows Realtek drivers remove the noise on software level in real time (ie no noise when talking on TeamSpeak3/Steam/whatever voip programme) so I hope that there is such option on Linux as well.   • Can we solve the table row background image problem, in chrome, in multi celled tables??

    It is frequently asked – but I haven’t seen a good answer yet (and I looked). If you set a background image in CSS to a table row- the image will repeat itself in every cell. If you set the position: relative (for the row) and set the background-image: none (for the cells) it solves the problem on IE but not on chrome! I can't use background positioning since there are many calls and their size varies. (And the picture is not symmetrical- It's a fade out from one side. Anybody?? Example for the css code : tr { height: 30px; position:relative;} tr.green {background: url('green_30.png') no-repeat left top;} tr.orange {background: url('oranger_30.png') no-repeat left top;} tr.red {background: url('red_30.png') no-repeat left top;} td {background-image:none;} The HTML is basic - A multi cell table. The goal is to have different colors fade into every row, but it could be any non-pattern image.

    Hi We use Kentico CMS and I've exchanged emails with them about a web garden deployment. We have a single site running on a server with 8 cpu cores. In line with Kentico's advice, we have not altered the application pool web garden setting from the default i.e. it is set to a maximum number of worker processes of 1. Our experience is that the site only uses one of the cpu cores - the others are idling. When I emailed them about this, their response was that the OS/IIS would handle this and use other cores as necessary even though the application pool only has a single worker process. Now, I've a lot of respect for the guys at Kentico, but this doesn't seem right to me? Surely, if we want to use all cores, we need to permit eight worker processes (and implement session state storage in SQL server)? Many thanks Tony

    IIS7 ASP.net 2.0 Number of worker processes growing out of control in single app pool. Appear to keep spawning upwards. Monitoring the w3wp.exe process i can see "current connections" to web service sometimes spawn out of control but not always , only worker processes are consistently growing when this issue occurs. Number of worker processes normally 0 - 20 , when spawning they can reach 1000 + This was deployed in: %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\aspnet.config maxConcurrentRequestsPerCPU="50000" maxConcurrentThreadsPerCPU="0" requestQueueLimit="50000" But issue still occurs. Have tried running PROCDUMP on the exe process but the mini dump isnt a great help. I understand this is 99% probable an app issue , what i need help with is tracking it down. Thank you for any tips.   • What happens to other users if the .NET worker process crashes?

    My knowledge of how processes are handled by the ASP.Net worker process is woefully inadequate. I'm hoping some of the experts out there can fill me in. If I crash the worker process with a System.OutOfMemoryException, what would the user experience be for other users who were being served by the same process? Would they get a blank screen? 503 error? I'm going to attempt to test this scenario with some other folks in our lab, but I thought I would float this out there. I will update with our results.

  • Clarifying... So Background Jobs don't Tie Up Application Resources (in Rails)?

    I'm trying to get a better grasp of the inner workings of background jobs and how they improve performance. I understand that the goal is to have the application return a response to the user as fast as it can, so you don't want to, say, parse a huge feed that would take 10 seconds because it would prevent the application from being able to process any other requests. So it's recommended to put any operations that take more than say 500ms to execute, into a queued background job. What I don't understand is, doesn't that just delay the same problem? I know the user who invoked that background job will get an immediate response, but what if another user comes right when that background job starts (and it takes 10 seconds to finish), wont that user have to wait? Or is the main issue that, requests are the only thing that can happen one-at-a-time, while on the other hand a request can start while one+ background jobs are in the middle of running? Is that correct?

    Given that now with Stack Exchange 2.0 the logo of some of the sites, like Web Apps, AskUbuntu, Photography, Gaming and Pro Webmasters have non-white background, I think it will be best if the StackAuth sites route can include the preferred background color for those the logo of these sites. This is especially important for sites like Photography whose logo is unreadable if the traditional white is used. Edit: Here's an example of what I mean here: As you can see, the AskUbuntu logo text totally invisible against a white background.

    How can I increase the limit of worker threads from the default 10 for SQL Server 2005 SqlAgent? I have 9 jobs that run almost continuously and that leaves only one available thread for the rest of the scheduled jobs. Oftentimes, when no thread is available, I will see the jobs in "Waiting for worker thread" state. I'd like to increase the number to about 12 (which should do the trick for me). Any idea where this is set?

    In this question I do not want to customize the launcher for each workspace, or change the animations or behaviors of the icons. I only want to change how the background of the Launcher looks. Let me show you what I mean: If I do not open the Dash, the launcher looks like the following: It looks like this because I have a background that has gray, black and white colors. So Unity tries to accommodate the launcher to contrast with it. Now when I open the Dash, the launcher looks like this: What I want is to make the launcher look the same as if my Dash were open (Darker, richer background). I thought maybe to invert the colors of an opened Dash with a closed one, but that the end I do not care if the colors do change when I open the Dash, so long as the darker richer version stays. Is it possible to do this, to make the background stay with a darker color like shown in the pictures above?

  • Scaling background without scaling foreground in platformer?

    I'm currently developing a platform game and I've run into a problem with scaling resolutions. I want a different resolution of the game to still display the foreground unscaled (characters, tiles, etc) but I want the background to be scaled to fit into the window. To explain this better, my viewport has 4 variables: (x, y, width, height) where x and y are the top left corner and width and height are the dimensions. These can be either 800x600, 1024x768 or 1280x960. When I design my levels, I design everything for the highest resolution (1280x960) and expect the game engine to scale it down if a user is running in a lower resolution. I have tried the following to make it work but nothing I've come up with solves it so far: scale = view->width/1280; drawX = x * scale; drawY = y * scale; (this makes the translation too small for low resolution) and scale = view->width/1280; bgWidth = background->width*scale; bgHeight = background->height*scale; drawX = x + background->width/2 - bgWidth/2; drawY = y + background->height/2 - bgHeight/2; (this makes the translation completely wrong at the edges of the map) The thing is, no matter what resolution the game is run at, the map remains the same size, and the foreground is unscaled. (With a lower resolution you just see less of the foreground in the viewport) I was wondering if anyone had any idea how to solve this problem? Thank you in advance!
