  Hi, How can I check the mysql connection for a user/password using batch/shell script? I've user name and password, and I need to authenticate whether they are correct or not, but how? I tried this way: I've created a batch file "run.bat" with "mysql -u User--password=UserPassword < commands.sql" "commands.sql" file contains "\q" When I run the file "run.bat" the output is nothing when User/Password are correct and "ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user ... " when User/Password are incorrect. Now can we capture this output, and decide whether the connection is successful or not, if yes how? Regards

• C# 'is' type check on struct - odd .NET 4.0 x86 optimization behavior

  Since upgrading to VS2010 I'm getting some very strange behavior with the 'is' keyword. The program below (test.cs) outputs True when compiled in debug mode (for x86) and False when compiled with optimizations on (for x86). Compiling all combinations in x64 or AnyCPU gives the expected result, True. All combinations of compiling under .NET 3.5 give the expected result, True. I'm using the batch file below (runtest.bat) to compile and test the code using various combinations of compiler .NET framework. Has anyone else seen these kind of problems under .NET 4.0? Does everyone else see the same behavior as me on their computer when running runtests.bat? #@$@#$?? • JBoss as a windows service. Where can i set the JAVA_OPTS?

  hi. I'm running JBoss as a windows service, but i can't seem to find where i can configure the JAVA_OPTS to make it work properly. I need to set the Xms and the Xmx. I have tried to just run JBoss manually (run.bat) and in the same file i set the JAVA_OPTS= -Xms128m -Xmx512m. And that works. Here is my install.bat where i install the JBoss as a service: set JBOSS_CLASS_PATH=%JAVA_HOME%\lib\tools.jar;%JBOSS_HOME%\bin\run.jar rem copy /Y JavaService.exe D:\PROJECT\bin\JBossService.exe JBossService.exe -install JBoss %JAVA_HOME%\jre\bin\server\jvm.dll -Djava.class.path=%JBOSS_CLASS_PATH% -start org.jboss.Main -stop org.jboss.Shutdown -method systemExit -out %PROJECT_HOME%\log\JBoss_out.log -err %PROJECT_HOME%\log\JBoss_err.log -current D:\PROJECT\bin net start JBoss When i look at the info about JBoss Application Server (http://localhost:8080/web-console/) i see this info: JVM Environment Free Memory: 9 MB Max Memory: 63 MB Total Memory: 63 MB And i MUST have more Max Memory. • Gracefully trap error on dos start cmd

  On a cmd prompt or bat file, I issue the following: start textpad myfile.txt and it works fine. If the program textpad does not exist on the computer, then an error sound and a popup occurs which the OK button must be pushed. I desire to trap this error so that I could do something like start textpad myfile.txt || start notepad myfile.txt where the || implies that if the start of textpad is not successful, then the start of notepad should occur. HOWEVER, I still get the error sound and requirement of hitting OK. My intent is to avoid the sound and the requirement of any user intervention. I have also tried the following bat approach below, to no avail. start textpad if not %ERRORLEVEL% == 0 GOTO END start notepad :END Any help would be great. thanks ted

  Each time I compile my Qt project after modifying my qss stylesheet file, the modifications aren't taken into account, unless I rebuild everything. Any idea on a workaround for this, so that I don't have to wait 5 minutes each time I change my qss ? Notes: I use Qt 4.8, and my stylsheet is declared in a resource file (qrc). EDIT: As suggested by Luca Carlon, when a qss is reference in the project through a .qrc file, the changes in the qss don't affect the qrc, and the compiler ignores it. To avoid that, I added a Custom Build Step to my project: before the qmake step! calls a .bat file without any argument the .bat contains the real command copy /b files.qrc +,,

  I am trying to run a batch file. the file is located here: C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\getfile.bat I use this in oracle forms 6i: first i assign this path to a variable: tmp_msg := 'C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\getfile.bat' then I use the host command: host( 'cmd /c' || tmp_msg, no_screen); This is exactly as I have it. It doesn't give me an error, but I don't get the result that I'm expecting.   I am using the following script on a command line to kill a hypothetical notepad process (using a Korn shell in Windows XP, if that matters): kill $(tasklist | grep -i notepad.exe | awk '{print 2}') Now I take this line, and put it into a batch file c:\temp\testkill.bat, thinking that I should just as well be able to kill the process by running the batch file. However, when I run the batch file, I get the following awk error about unbalanced parentheses: C:/Temp ./testkill.bat C:\Tempkill $(tasklist | grep -i notepad.exe | awk '{print $2}') awk: unbalanced () Context is: {print $2}) <<< C:/Temp So I'm baffled as to why I am getting this error about unbalanced parentheses when I run this script via a batch file, but have no issues when I run the command directly from the command line? (Btw, I'm not necessarily tied to this way of killing a process - as a total noob to shell scripting, I am additionally wondering why if I write the following on the command line: tasklist | grep -i notepad.exe | awk '{print $2}' | kill the process ID that comes out of the tasklist/grep/awk calls doesn't seem to properly get piped to kill...)

  Hello all, I have two problems which are related. 1) I have a batch file that contains this: net stop wampapache net start wampapache Which tries to stop and start my wamp server. When I double click the stop.bat file with the above it works successfully. When I try to run that from my PHP script, it stops the server but doesn't start it fully which I am guessing is because Apache is waiting for that PHP process to exit? function php_kill(){ exec('stop.bat', $output = array(), $return); return $return; } 2) Is there a way to restart my webserver (apache) whilst keeping session variables that PHP needs available?   I'm currently launching an asynchronous job with PHP to perform some tests. To make it work, I found on SO some tips, like the use of popen and start: $commande = "testu.bat"; $pid = popen('start /B ' . $commande, 'r'); $status = pclose($pid); The testu.bat's folder is in my user PATH. This script performs some task, and to control it's execution, it should generates a log file, but I never get it. Whereas if I just remove the /B option, it works fine and I get my log file.   Hi I am working on a web based project in my free time. I have SVN set up on my machine (running XP). What I would like to do is have a copy of my repository copied to the htdocs folder (Dev machine) post-commit via a hook. That way I can test my changes in a browser. I know that I can write up a .bat file, but I'm not sure what the syntax would be. I can do a basic DOS Copy command, but I saw one example that provided a username and password to SVN at copy time. Do I need to do this? Can someone point me in the right direction as far a syntax for the .bat file? Or maybe even suggest a better method. Thanks

• UppercuT &ndash; Custom Extensions Now With PowerShell and Ruby

  Arguably, one of the most powerful features of UppercuT (UC) is the ability to extend any step of the build process with a pre, post, or replace hook. This customization is done in a separate location from the build so you can upgrade without wondering if you broke the build. There is a hook before each step of the build has run. There is a hook after. And back to power again, there is a replacement hook. If you don’t like what the step is doing and/or you want to replace it’s entire functionality, you just drop a custom replacement extension and UppercuT will perform the custom step instead. Up until recently all custom hooks had to be written in NAnt. Now they are a little sweeter because you no longer need to use NAnt to extend UC if you don’t want to. You can use PowerShell. Or Ruby.   Let that sink in for a moment. You don’t have to even need to interact with NAnt at all now. Extension Points On the wiki, all of the extension points are shown. The basic idea is that you would put whatever customization you are doing in a separate folder named build.custom. Each step Let’s take a look at all we can customize: The start point is default.build. It calls build.custom/default.pre.build if it exists, then it runs build/default.build (normal tasks) OR build.custom/default.replace.build if it exists, and finally build.custom/default.post.build if it exists. Every step below runs with the same extension points but changes on the file name it is looking for. If you are not signing your scripts you will need to change a setting in the UppercuT.config file. This does impose a security risk, because this allows PS to now run any PS script. This setting stays that way on ANY machine that runs the build until manually changed by someone. I’m not responsible if you mess up your machine or anyone else’s by doing this. You’ve been warned. Now that you are fully aware of any security holes you may open and are okay with that, let’s move on. Let’s create a file called default.replace.build.ps1 in the build.custom folder. Open that file in notepad and let’s add this to it: write-host "hello - I'm a custom task written in Powershell!" Now, let’s run build.bat. You could get some PSake action going here. I won’t dive into that in this post though. Customize UppercuT Builds With Ruby If you want to customize any extension point with Ruby, just add .rb to the end of the file name and write your custom tasks in Ruby.  Let’s write a custom ruby task for UC. If you were thinking it would be the same as the one we just wrote for PS, you’d be right! In the build.custom folder, lets create a file called default.replace.build.rb. Open that file in notepad and let’s put this in there: puts "I'm a custom ruby task!" Now, let’s run build.bat again. That’s chunky bacon. UppercuT and Albacore.NET Just for fun, I wanted to see if I could replace the compile.step with a Rake task. Not just any rake task, Albacore’s msbuild task. Albacore is a suite of rake tasks brought about by Derick Bailey to make building .NET with Rake easier. It has quite a bit of support with developers that are using Rake to build code. In my build.custom folder, I drop a compile.replace.step.rb. I also put in a separate file that will contain my Albacore rake task and I call that compile.rb. What are the contents of compile.replace.step.rb? rake = 'rake' arguments= '-f ' + Dir.pwd + '/../build.custom/compile.rb' #puts "Calling #{rake} " + arguments system("#{rake} " + arguments) Since the custom extensions call ruby, we have to shell back out and call rake. That’s what we are doing here. We also realize that ruby is called from the build folder, so we need to back out and dive into the build.custom folder to find the file that is technically next to us. We change the output path to the build_output/UppercuT folder. The output path has “../../” because this is based on every project. We could grab the current directory and then point the task specifically to a folder if we have projects that are at different levels. We want the verbosity to be quiet so we set that as well. So what kind of output do you get for this? • Generating Report for NUnit

   All source codes for this post can be found at my github.Time ago, I received a request that people ask me how they can generate reports of the results of testing using NUnit? In fact, I may never do this. In the little world of my programming, I only care about the test results, red-green-refactoring, and that was it. When I got that question quite a bit unexpected, I knew that I could use NCover to generate reports, but reports of NCover too simple, it did not give us more details on the number of test cases, test methods, ... And I began to see about creating interesting report for NUnit.I was lucky to find an open source here. Its authors call it NUnit2Report, but one disadvantage is it only running on .NET 1.0. Indeed too old compared to the current version 4.0. And I try to download the preview, but I could not run. I had to open its source code and found that it uses XSLT to convert the output of NUnit results from XML to HTML. Nothing really special, because I also knew that after NUnit run output file extension is XML is created. Author only use this file to convert to HTML using XSLT. And I decided to convert it to. NET 4.0, because I will not have to code from scratch. Conversion work made me take some time, but was lucky that I finally have what I want. Thanks Gilles for the this OSS. I will send a mail to thank him for his efforts but put this out for the OSS. Now I will show people how to do it. I used the auto built NAnt and NUnit for running TestCase, and I use Selenium testing framework. After writing three TestCase using Selenium, I ran NUnit, and got the following results: There are 1 fail and 2s success. In the bin directory of this project will have the NUnit output file as shown below: Then I create a build file, and a bat file for easy running (can use PowerShell is here also.) Double click in the bat file to create a report like this:       Finally open the index.html file in the folder to view report. As everyone can see, it is the TestCase and divide very clearly, that I meet the requirements. This is really good. Once again I really thank NUnit2Report from Gilles. Hopefully this post will help anyone really interested in doing reports for NUnit.

• Breakout ball collision detection, bouncing against the walls [solved]

  I'm currently trying to program a breakout game to distribute it as an example game for my own game engine. http://game-engine-for-java.googlecode.com/ But the problem here is that I can't get the bouncing condition working properly. What I'm missing? Is there anything to implement? Please help me.. • Windows XP seemingly out of resources but plenty of free RAM and swap available

  This one has been bothering me for years and so far I couldn't find an adequate solution. The problem occurs on pretty much every XP install I've done. After opening a variety of programs or the system running existing programs for a while, Windows seemingly runs out of resources, without telling me. There's ALWAYS free RAM. For example, it just happened to me and I had over a gig of free RAM. There are no viruses, spyware, or other nonsense - it is a Windows resource problem, but the question is which resource is it running out of, how does one pinpoint it, and how does one prevent it? Sometimes, this happens after running specific programs - for example, today it happened when I started Photoshop CS4 and Flash CS4 at the same time. I also noticed that restarting The Bat (email client by Ritlabs) seems to get rid of this problem for a while but again, this happens on machines that don't even have The Bat installed. So what does exactly happen? The symptoms are: pressing alt-tab doesn't bring up the list anymore - it just jumps to the next window instantly, very similar to the way Alt-Esc works, however in this case, it's due to not having enough resources to bring up the alt-tab menu random programs would randomly crash, citing random errors, out of memory errors, system resources, inabilities to do system calls, etc. random programs would start missing random parts - for example, Firefox top menus might disappear, pull up partial selections, or not pull up anymore altogether. IE might lose a few of its toolbars. Some programs might fail to redraw or would just plain go gray where the UI used to be. Windows itself never complains about running out of RAM, virtual memory, or anything at all, yet it's running out of something. The only clue I was able to find and apply the fix today was this Desktop Heap Limitation. I haven't confirmed the fix working as not enough time passed. In the meantime, what are everyone's thoughts?

• .tex file remains in use by process when batch file is triggered by .Rnw Sweave processing.

  This is a pretty specialized question. I'm using the Eclipse IDE in a Windows XP environment with the StatET plug-in so I can write R code as an R/Sweave document. This produces a .tex file that is then post processed by pdflatex.exe. When I create the file as normal everything works great (except maybe my file named russfnc2.Rnw seems to result in russfnc.pdf even though pdflatex.exe on the console window correctly says that the output is being writen to russfnc2.pdf). The big problem is when I trigger a batch file from within my Rnw code. My goal here is to spawn a side process that waits for the PDF to be made and uploads it to the server. So the Rnw contains: if(file.exists("rsp.finalize.bat")) {system("rsp.finalize.bat",wait=FALSE,invisible=FALSE)} The batch file calls Rterm.exe to run a script: setwd("C:/theprojectdirectory") while(!file.exists("russfnc.pdf")) { Sys.sleep(1) } Sys.sleep(60) At the end of that script, I use a shell call to launch psftp.exe and upload the files. All of this works fine, when I use my Eclipse profile to trigger Sweave... that is unless I have that batch file at the end of the .Rnw. When it is located there, I get the error message pdflatex.exe: Permission denied: c:\thepath\thetexfile.tex. After that, the .tex file (as far as XP is concerned) is in use by another process and I have to reboot in order to delete it (and, of course, the pdf is not made). If I manually trigger the batch file after pdflatex.exe has done its things, everything works fine. How can I make this work correctly using the tools I'm familiar with vis., R and Dos-style batch files? I'm not sure if this is a SuperUser question or a StackOverflow question, so I'm starting here.
