  • Has anyone else had problems with the miserable kb980408 update?

    I wasn't experienced any problems before installing kb980408 for Windows 7 x86. The update made it impossible for me to log into my computer after displaying a "Setting up personalized settings for Windows Desktop Update" message, after killing that task a "Windows Explorer is not responding - Windows is checking for a solution to the problem" message appears, then it waits forever... If I killed that task, I was not able to continue the boot process, if I ran explore.exe manually, the same thing happens. The solution, by the way, was to boot into safe mode and use the add/remove program in the control panel to uninstall this wretched piece of code. Start-up repair and/or the use of system restore will not help you, you need to uninstall.

  • ASP.NET request queue priority

    I'm on IIS 7 and .NET 4.0. My understanding is that IIS takes requests and passes them off to ASP.NET worker threads. If all the threads are in use, the request goes into a queue and is processed once a thread becomes available. If the queue goes over a certain size, all new requests get a 503 until there is room in the queue again. Is there a way to prioritize the order in which queued requests are served? For example, I have consumer traffic and infrastructure traffic coming to the same server. If there are no available threads, I'd like for the consumer requests to be served first, even if they have arrived after infrastructure requests. Basically I want to replace the request queue with a priority queue. Is this possible with IIS?

  • 64-bit Windows 7 softphone to make SIP calls without registering with a SIP proxy?

    We have test tools that require us to call SIP addresses like localhost:5061. I used to use SJPhone on Windows XP, and an older version of X-lite, which both worked fine, and didn't require the SIP phone to be registered with a SIP proxy. I have just upgraded to Windows 7 and SJPhone doesn't seem to work any more (see forum here for others with the problem) - it says "No sound input device / No sound output device" at startup. I have tried a range of other softphones (X-lite 3, X-lite 4, Zoiper, 3CX), but I can't seem to find any that will install on Windows 7 and will let me call a SIP address like localhost:5061. It might be that I just don't know how to configure these phones to do it...

    I feel like an idiot but for the life of me I can't find the answer to this question. Whispernet syncs your reading location across all books right? How do you reset that location? If I want to read a book for the second time if I try to sync to the furthest page read it will push me to the last page because that's the furthest I've read. Am I doomed to only read Kindle books once?

  • Offset the tickmarks of a secondary axis

    I would like to offset the tickmarks of a secondary axis in excel WITHOUT changing the minimum. Here is a very complicated VBA class that apparently solves the issue but I would like a solution that doesn't require me to construct my entire chart in VBA. Here is an example of what I mean (I removed the chart insides so it looks funny, but really only the axes matter for this question): I am happy with the primary axis on the left. The secondary axis is just the primary axis plus 7.96%, so the secondary axis HAS TO have 0.0796 as a minimum. But I would like my tickmarks to be at nice rounder numbers so I would like to offset the starting point of the secondary axis' tickmarks to only start at 8%. Does anyone know of a way to achieve this? Just to be clear about the VBA, I am happy to use a VBA solution but I don't have the time to actually construct the chart itself in VBA. Using VBA to get a handle on the chart and make the adjustment would be perfect.

  • AIX: iscsi volumes disappear after reboot

    We have an IBM P505 AIX box, with two internal disks and a defined iSCSI volume. The iSCSI volume is defined in it's own volume group, and is connected to an IBM iSCSI DS3300 disk array via the secondary onboard ethernet port (ie, we're not using a dedicated HBA, we're using the second onboard ethernet port for iSCSI exclusively.) When we reboot the AIX box, the iSCSI volume doesn't get mounted (which is fine; I've figured out that it fails to mount because AIX tries mounting it's volumes before starting the networking stack.) The problem is, after the server has booted it fails to redetect the iSCSI target as a physical disk. This means the volume group (iscsivg) can't go online. if I run cfgmgr -v to redetect the iscsi volume it successfully detects the iscsi target volume and creates a physical volume reference, but allocates it a different volume ID to what was defined before. eg - rootvg contains hdisk 0 and 1 iscsivg was originally defined with hdisk2 as the physical iSCSI volume. after reboot and running cfgmgr -v, AIX detects physical volumes hdisk0, hdisk11 and hdisk3. As there's no hdisk2, I can't varyon the iscsivg volume group. I can't seem any existing hdisk2 definition in the ODM. I can't easily add or change the definition of the physcial disk in the iscsivg volume group as it won't "varyon". Exporting the volume group deletes it completely, recreating the volume group by "importing" it from the reallocated disk makes it available again, but surely there's a better way? Can I force a specific hdisk drive designation for an iscsi target? How do you bring online iSCSI volumes after a reboot? I assume this "just works" with a dedicated HBA instead of a generic ethernet adapter? By the way, the iSCSI volume works fine once it's mounted; we only have problems getting it working - and only with AIX. The iSCSI array works fine with our Linux and Windows servers; ie the volumes get detected and remounted after boot time without any problems, using generic ethernet adapters.   • Nginx dynamic upstream configuration / routing

    I was experimenting with dynamic upstream configuration for nginx and cant find any good solution to implement upstream configuration from third-party source like redis or mysql. The idea behind it is to have a single file configuration in primary server and proxy requests to various app servers based on environment conditions. Think of dynamic deployments where you have X servers that are running Y workers on different ports. For instance, i create a new app and deploy. App manager selects a server and then rolls out a worker (Ruby/PHP/Python) and then reports the ip:port to the central database with status "up". At this time when i go to the given url nginx should proxy all requests to the specified ip:port upstream. The whole thing is pretty similar to what heroku does, except this proof-of-concept is not supposed to be production ready, mostly for internal needs. The easiest solution i found was using resolver with ruby-based DNS server. It works, nginx gets the IP address correctly, but the only problem is that you cant define port number for that IP. Second solution (which i havent tried yet) is to roll something else as a proxy server, maybe written in Erlang. In this case we need to use something to serve static content.   • Restoring Time Machine from two Macs onto one (new) mac

    My parents used to have two Macs...a "iLamp-style" iMac for my Dad, and an iBook G4 for my Mom. A while back, I had setup the iMac to have an external Firewire Hard Drive for a Time Machine Volume, and backed up both the iMac and iBook to that drive. Recently, the iBook died and the iMac was really slow to work with. So my parents decided to replace the iBook with an iPad, and also purchased a Mac Mini. I need to help my parents get their data from their two computers (backed up by Time Machine) onto the same machine. Pretty much everything is identical between the two systems (same apps, etc), however, they both have individual email accounts and photos that they want to retain. Is it possible to do two Time Machine restores onto one computer?

  • Using SSL with Openfire

    I'm having a rough time getting SSL configured properly on an Openfire install. Quite honestly, I just don't know what to do. It seems convoluted on the steps necessary to get a cert imported. Has anyone out there successfully done this? I'm running Openfire 3.6.4 on Server2003 R2. I have a signed UC cert which is ready to roll, I just don't know what to do with it. I've been through tons of tutorials on converting from .crt to .der to .pem, using openssl and java tools, but its only getting more confusing as I go.

  • Windows Authentication behaves oddly when VPN'd

    Hi all We've got a few apps that rely on windows authentication - a couple of web apps with AD auth turned on and we usually connect to our SQL servers with windows auth. This normally runs without a hitch. It doesn't work so well if we're VPN'd to a client site though. SSMS Opening SSMS normally from the start menu, then picking a server that normally accepts windows auth, results in a message saying: Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication. (.Net SqlClient Data Provider) If I drop to a command prompt and use runas /user:domain\user to launch SSMS I can successfully windows auth to our SQL server instances with that ssms process. If I look in task manager, both copies of ssms.exe (start menu vs runas) have the same user, and I can see no discernible differences between the processes in procexp. AD Auth websites If I open IE and browse to any of our websites that require an authenticated windows user, I get the "who are you" prompt, and that dialog thinks I'm whoever the VPN user is. I can click "Use another account" and authenticate that way though. Outlook Even Outlook prompts for a username when we are VPN'd! It's affecting our Win7 and Vista machines. It's been a while since we had an XP box, but I don't recall having this issue on XP for what it's worth. The VPN connections are just using the built in windows VPN connections, they're not fancy cisco VPNs or anything of that nature. Does anyone know how to tell windows that I'd like to be my normal old primary domain user rather than the VPN user when authenticating to resources in our domain? Heck, I'd be happy with a solution that prompted me with the "who are you" if I was trying to access windows auth requiring resources on the client's VPN. Thanks! Apologies if this is more a superuser question, I wasn't sure which site it best suited. It's about networking and infrastructure and plagues all of our developers here, so I hope it's a serverfault Q.

    I need a Linux distro that will give me the following: Run on a Raspberry Pi Can reliably survive power loss (like via a read-only filesystem) I've been able to hunt down some documentation on how to change a regular Linux distro over to read-only mode. I was hoping that there would be a distro already built that was designed to run in an embedded environment. I don't need many packages or drivers, just enough to have the Pi working with USB/Ethernet. I don't need any GUI interface or anything, this will just be running a custom service built in C. Does anyone know of a distro that would fit?

  • How do I limit the CPU share of TrustedInstaller.exe on a Vista system

    I'm trying to fix a few low end single core desktops running Vista. In normal use they're fast enough not to be a problem. The issue is that because these machines are only on when being used, primarily for school work, windowsupdate begins installing patches it launches TrustedInstaller which in turn hogs 100% of the CPU and renders the machines all but unusable for however long it takes to patch them.

  • Load balancing and HTTPS strategies

    I am faced with the following problem: Servers get saturated since current load balancing strategy is based on client IP. Some corporate clients access our servers from behind large proxies so all clients appear with same IP to our load balancer. I think we are using some hardware load balancing device (can investigate further if necessary). We need to maintain session affinity (site is constructed in ASP), so all requests with same IP get routed to the same node. Since all the communication goes over the HTTPS, no request data (like session Id) is available to balancer as a client discriminator. Is there a way to use some other data besides the IP to distinguish between clients and route the clients even when coming from same IP to different nodes? Note: I need to maintain the traffic between the balancer and nodes safe (encrypted).

  • HP Storageworks 448 tape drive input/output error with Ubuntu

    I'm trying to set a backup to tape of a machine using flexbackup. However any attempt to write to the tape drive (via either flexbackup or just tar) results in "/dev/st0: Input/output error" The machine seems to recognise the drive (HP Storageworks Ultrium 448) and that there's a tape in it and "mt status" seems to work... "mt -f /dev/st0 rewind" or "erase" throw no errors... root@stor001:/# mt status SCSI 2 tape drive: File number=0, block number=0, partition=0. Tape block size 0 bytes. Density code 0x42 (LTO-2).   • Looking for a help desk ticketing system..

    Hi guys Im looking for a good help desk ticket solution. It must perform the following actions for it to be useful. It needs to have a single point of contact via email..e.g [email protected] If we recieve a telephone(or an email outside of the system) we need to be able to create a ticket as if had been added via the single point of contact, this needs to be done with ease in order to save time. Certain people within our organisation deal with certain customers, so if the email/ custom input support call as mentioned in bullet 2 is picked up as having a relationship with that certain person in our organisation it needs to be sent to them/put in their queue for them to work on. If a person is out of office or sick any tickets sent to them must be forwarded to somebody else or put into a seperate pool of tickets that anybody can access. Perhaps have an agent that sorts through tickets in the pool and assigns them to anybody who is available, preferably the person with fewest tickets in their queue/list. Once a customer emails and the system logs it they immediately get a response with a ticket number and maybe details of who is dealing with the problem. Any correspondance in relation to a particular ticket is automatically grouped into some sort of message, and not made into a load of separate tickets. I.e system scans incoming email subjects for ticket numbers and assosciates it with exisiting tickets if that number exists. Any help is much appreciated Thanks P.S I have taken a look at OTRS but i'm not feeling it so unless someone can convince me I guess i'm after an alternative.

  • slow network in centos5 VM with centos5 host running KVM

    I setup KVM following the guide here: http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/centos-rhel-linux-kvm-virtulization-tutorial/ I setup a bridged network and it worked fine except that the transfer speed is 200KB/s instead of the gigabit speed that I get on the host machine by itself. I tried editing the guest network settings to set "model=virtio" http://wiki.libvirt.org/page/Virtio but this just moves ifconfig-eth0 to ifconfig-eth0.bak in the VM and networking doesn't work at all. I tried moving ifconfig-eth0 back and starting up eth0, which works, but now the transfer speed is ~ 60KB/s I have no idea what else to try. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Is VBoxManage guestcontrol passing parameters incorrectly?

    I had an idea of using my Windows VM (on a Ubuntu host) to open itms:// links (for iTunes) from the host. So, I'm using vboxmanage guestcontrol to make this happen. I have a script (win_vm_launcher.sh) that takes a link as the argument, and passes it to the host like this: vboxmanage guestcontrol "$VM" exec --image 'C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe' --username "$USER" --password "$PASSWORD" -- /c start "$@" This works if I copy a link from my browser, and change http to itms. E.g., for https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-york-city/id3202598, I can do win_vm_launcher.sh itmss://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-york-city/id3202598 and it works fine. The album opens up in iTunes on my VM. However, when I click a "View in iTunes" link from the iTunes site, it adds an extra parameter to the URI (specifically, the referrer), so it looks something like itmss://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-york-city/id3202598?ign-msr=https%3A%2F%2Fitunes.apple.com%2Fus%2Falbum%2Fit-came-upon-midnight-clear%2Fid578946739 Unfortunately, if I try to run win_vm_launcher.sh itmss://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-york-city/id3202598?ign-msr=https%3A%2F%2Fitunes.apple.com%2Fus%2Falbum%2Fit-came-upon-midnight-clear%2Fid578946739 it insteads opens up a regular Command Prompt window with the title "itmss://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-york-city/id3202598?ign-msr=https%3A%2F%2Fitunes.apple.com%2Fus%2Falbum%2Fit-came-upon-midnight-clear%2Fid578946739". I don't even know how to set the command prompt window title, so I'm not sure how that's happening. If I run the command in the guest, it works fine, opening the album in iTunes: cmd /c start itmss://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-york-city/id3202598?ign-msr=https%3A%2F%2Fitunes.apple.com%2Fus%2Falbum%2Fit-came-upon-midnight-clear%2Fid578946739 I found a VirtualBox bug that seems somewhat related, but not exactly. It probably doesn't matter, but my host is Ubuntu 12.04, and my guest is Windows 7. So, any idea if vboxmanage is incorrectly passing the arguments, and if so, is there a way around it? If I can't figure out the right way to do it, I'll end up having to process each argument, and stripping out any parameters on any URIs. P.S. I tried creating a batch script (out.bat) like this: echo %1 > %TEMP%/testing.txt and then running it from the host like this: vboxmanage guestcontrol "$VM" exec --image 'C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe' --username "$USER" --password "$PASSWORD" -- /c "C:\path\to\out.bat" "itmss://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-york-city/id3202598?ign-msr=https%3A%2F%2Fitunes.apple.com%2Fus%2Falbum%2Fit-came-upon-midnight-clear%2Fid578946739" It ran as expected, and when I open %TEMP%/testing.txt, it contained: "itmss://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-york-city/id3202598?ign-msr=https%3A%2F%2Fitunes.apple.com%2Fus%2Falbum%2Fit-came-upon-midnight-clear%2Fid578946739" including the quotes. So, it sort of passed the parameter correctly (not sure why it still had quotes), so maybe the problem is with cmd.exe, or even the start command. I'm stymied.

  • Can I use Outlook 2010 (beta) with OWA account?

    One of the new features of Outlook 2010 (beta) is the support for multiple Exchange accounts. I'm wondering if there is any way to use this together with a (different) Outlook Web Access account to also get that email in Outlook. Specifially, in additional to my regular corporate (Exchange) account, I also use another corporate account through OWA. With this second account, the only supported access is through OWA; while POP3 access is available, it is not actually suported. I'm not very familiar with configuring Exchange servers, but in talking to those who are, it sounds like enabling Outlook Web Access is (slightly) different than allowing access from Outlook via HTTP(s). Is that correct? If so, it doesn't really semm quite right as absolute worst-case, one could (theoretically) resort to screen-scraping OWA. Edit: this looks to be about the same as Activesync/OWA Desktop Client? (This doesn't have anything to do with the question, but I'm actually using this second corporate account in Outlook by POP3'ing to Gmail, and then IMAP4 from Gmail to Outlook. Obviously, it would be much nicer to add it as a second Exchange account.).

  • Windows 7 Apache Crashes on ANY request

    I have XAMPP installed. I am running Windows 7. I have WordPress installed so that I may tweak it and test things locally before putting them 'live' on a remote server. I just installed BuddyPress. The installation was rather seamless. I activated the plugin and almost immediately, Apache crashed. I have Apache running as a service so it immediately restarted itself and was running BUT if I even so much as refresh the page (or create any other request), down it goes.   • Sonicwall with failover, multiple subnets, and preferred WAN interface per subnet

    I am trying to set up my Sonicwall TZ-210 as follows: Two WAN interfaces (different ISPs), set up in failover mode. Two LAN interfaces with different subnets Each LAN subnet will have a preferred outbound WAN interface, but would failover when necessary. In this way, each ISP is being used for a separate subnet of my network, but both subnets could failover to the other ISP if their primary went down. I know how to do 1 and 2, but I don't know how to do 3. I could set up a route for each subnet to go through a specific interface, but what would happen in the event of a failover? Would it automatically update those routes? Thanks!
