  • aspnet_regsql questions and users and role

    - by Alexander
I spend quite some hours banging my head against the wall trying to set up the aspnet membership / roles tables in my SQL server database instead of having them exist inside the App_Code/ASPNETDB.MDF file because that file wasn't working correctly on my host. I eventually figured out the problem by following Scott's gu here and was able to resolve it by running the aspnet_regsql.exe utility and creating a connection string for LocalSqlServer. The ridiculous part about it is that after running the aspnet_regsql and upload my database to my webhost all of my users and role that I have already created is gone. The user, membership, role, etc is gone. I can't populate this using the Web Site Administration Tool as it's not visual studio now. So what is the easiest way to populate the user, role, etc to my SQL Server as I now have dbo.aspnet_Application, dbo.aspnet_Paths, dbo.aspnet_Roles, etc...etc...

  • How can I do this Aggrigate, group by, in query in LINQ?

    - by Ólafur Waage
Please do not give me a full working example, I want to know how this is done rather than to get some code I can copy paste This is the query I need, and can't for the life of me create it in LINQ. SELECT * FROM dbo.Schedules s, dbo.Videos v WHERE s.VideoID = v.ID AND s.ID IN ( SELECT MAX(ID) FROM dbo.Schedules WHERE ChannelID = 1 GROUP BY VideoID ) ORDER BY v.Rating DESC, s.StartTime DESC I have the "IN" query in LINQ I think, it's something like this var uniqueList = from schedule in db.Schedules where schedule.ChannelID == channelID group schedule by schedule.VideoID into s select new { id = s.Max(i => i.ID) }; It is possibly wrong, but now I can not check in another query for this in a where clause uniqueList.Contains(schedule.ID) There is possibly a better way to write this query, if you have any idea I would love some hints. I get this error and it's not making much sense. The type arguments for method 'System.Linq.Queryable.Contains(System.Linq.IQueryable, TSource)' cannot be inferred from the usage. Try specifying the type arguments explicitly.

  • Visual Studio 2010 Database Project does not understand Schema Names anymore?

    - by Xenan
I just tried to upgrade a Visual Studio 2008 Database project to VS2010 and actually it is quite a mess. Hundreds of warnings, all unsolved references. It seems to boil down to Visual Studio not to understand Schema Names (aka Ownership) anymore. For example, the standard dbo schema: [$(MyDataBase)].dbo.MyTable is fine but: [$(MyDataBase)].myschema.MyTable gives an unsolved reference. It did work in VS2008. Also the abbreviation for dbo, the double dot: [$(MyDataBase)]..MyTable Doesn't work anymore. In the project property windows I restored the references to the correct servers (which were lost after the conversion) but that didn't help. This seems pretty basic but I don't have a clue how to solve this. Any help is appreciated.

  • VS 2010 SQL Update for SQL Statement

    - by Mike Tucker
Please bear with me as I'm just beginning to learn this stuff. I have a VS 2010 Web project up and I'm trying to understand how I can make a custom UpdateCommand (Because I chose to write my own SQL statement, I do not have the option for VS 2010 to auto generate an update command for me.) Problem is: I don't know what the UpdateCommand should look like. Here is my Select: SELECT * FROM Dbo.MainAsset, dbo.Model, dbo.Hardware WHERE MainAsset.device = Hardware.DeviceID AND MainAsset.model = Model.DeviceID Which, VS 2010 turns into: SELECT MainAsset.pk, MainAsset.img, MainAsset.device, MainAsset.model, MainAsset.os, MainAsset.asset, MainAsset.serial, MainAsset.inyear, MainAsset.expyear, MainAsset.site, MainAsset.room, MainAsset.teacher, MainAsset.FirstName, MainAsset.LastName, MainAsset.Notes, MainAsset.Dept, MainAsset.AccountingCode, Model.Model AS Hardware, Model.pk AS Model, Model.DeviceID, Hardware.Computer, Hardware.pk AS Expr3, Hardware.DeviceID AS Expr4 FROM MainAsset INNER JOIN Hardware ON MainAsset.device = Hardware.DeviceID INNER JOIN Model ON MainAsset.model = Model.DeviceID How would I approach updating one column, say "MainAsset.site" if that's changed in the Gridview DDL? Any help constructive help would be appreciated. Thank you.

  • SQL SERVER – Importance of User Without Login – T-SQL Demo Script

    - by pinaldave
Earlier I wrote a blog post about SQL SERVER – Importance of User Without Login and my friend and SQL Expert Vinod Kumar has written excellent follow up blog post about Contained Databases inside SQL Server 2012. Now lots of people asked me if I can also explain the same concept again so here is the small demonstration for it. Let me show you how login without user can help. Before we continue on this subject I strongly recommend that you read my earlier blog post here. In following demo I am going to demonstrate following situation. Login using the System Admin account Create a user without login Checking Access Impersonate the user without login Checking Access Revert Impersonation Give Permission to user without login Impersonate the user without login Checking Access Revert Impersonation Clean up USE [AdventureWorks2012] GO -- Step 1 : Login using the SA -- Step 2 : Create Login Less User CREATE USER [testguest] 9ITHOUT LOGIN WITH DEFAULT_SCHEMA=[dbo] GO -- Step 3 : Checking access to Tables SELECT * FROM sys.tables; -- Step 4 : Changing the execution contest EXECUTE AS USER   = 'testguest'; GO -- Step 5 : Checking access to Tables SELECT * FROM sys.tables; GO -- Step 6 : Reverting Permissions REVERT; -- Step 7 : Giving more Permissions to testguest user GRANT SELECT ON [dbo].[ErrorLog] TO [testguest]; GRANT SELECT ON [dbo].[DatabaseLog] TO [testguest]; GO -- Step 8 : Changing the execution contest EXECUTE AS USER   = 'testguest'; GO -- Step 9 : Checking access to Tables SELECT * FROM sys.tables; GO -- Step 10 : Reverting Permissions REVERT; GO -- Step 11: Clean up DROP USER [testguest]Step 3 GO Here is the step 9 we will be able to notice that how a user without login gets access to some of the data/object which we gave permission. What I am going to prove with this example? Well there can be different rights with different account. Once the login is authenticated it makes sense for impersonating a user with only necessary permissions to be used for further operation. Again this is very basic and fundamental example. There are lots of more points to be discussed as we go in future posts. Just do not take this blog post as a template and implement everything as it is. • Workaround for datadude deployment bug - NullReferenceException

    - by jamiet
I have come across a bug in Visual Studio 2010 Database Projects (aka datadude aka DPro aka Visual Studio Database Development Tools aka Visual Studio Team Edition for Database Professionals aka Juneau aka SQL Server Data Tools) that other people may encounter so, for the purposes of googling, I'm writing this blog post about it. Through my own googling I discovered that a Connect bug had already been raised about it (VS2010 Database project deploy - “SqlDeployTask” task failed unexpectedly, NullReferenceException), and coincidentally enough it was raised by my former colleague Tom Hunter (whom I have mentioned here before as the superhuman Tom Hunter) although it has not (at this time) received a reply from Microsoft. Tom provided a repro, namely that this syntactically valid function definition: CREATE FUNCTION [dbo].[Function1]()RETURNS TABLEASRETURN (    WITH cte AS (    SELECT 1 AS [c1]    FROM [$(Database3)].[dbo].[Table1]   )   SELECT 1 AS [c1]   FROM cte) would produce this nasty unhelpful error upon deployment: C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\TeamData\Microsoft.Data.Schema.TSqlTasks.targets(120,5): Error MSB4018: The "SqlDeployTask" task failed unexpectedly.System.NullReferenceException: Object circumstances that need to be met for this error to occur: The object being deployed is an inline function  (may also exist for multistatement and scalar functions - I haven't tested that) That object includes SQLCMD variable references The object has already been deployed successfully Just to reiterate that last bullet point, the error does not occur when you deploy the function for the first time, only on the subsequent deployment.   Luckily I have a direct line into a guy on the development team so I fired off an email on Friday evening and today (Monday) I received a reply back telling me that there is a simple fix, one simply has to remove the parentheses that wrap the SQL statement. So, in the case of Tom's repro, the function definition simpy has to be changed to: CREATE FUNCTION [dbo].[Function1]()RETURNS TABLEASRETURN --(    WITH cte AS (    SELECT 1 AS [c1]    FROM [$(Database3)].[dbo].[Table1]   )   SELECT 1 AS [c1]   FROM cte--) I have commented out the offending parentheses rather than removing them just to emphasize the point. Thereafter the function will deploy fine. I tested this out on my own project this morning and can confirm that this fix does indeed work.   I have been told that the bug CAN be reproduced in the Release Candidate (RC) 0 build of SQL Server Data Tools in SQL Server 2010 so am hoping that a fix makes it in for the Release-To-Manufacturing (RTM) build. Hope this helps @jamiet

  • SQL SERVER – Detecting Leap Year in T-SQL using SQL Server 2012 – IIF, EOMONTH and CONCAT Function

    - by pinaldave
Note: Tomorrow is February 29th. This blog post is dedicated to coming tomorrow – a special day :) Subu: “How can I find leap year in using SQL Server 2012?“ Pinal: “Are you asking me how to year 2012 is leap year using T-SQL – search online and you will find many example of the same.” Subu: “No. I am asking – How can I find leap year in using SQL Server 2012?“ Pinal: “Oh so you are asking – How can I find leap year in using SQL Server 2012?“ Subu: “Yeah - How can I find leap year in using SQL Server 2012?“ Pinal: “Let me do that for you – How can you find leap year in using SQL Server 2012?“ Indeed a fun conversation. Honestly, only reason I pasted our conversation here is – it was fun. What he was asking is that how to do it using new functions introduced in SQL Server 2012. Here is the article I have written which introduces all the new functions in SQL Server 2012 Summary of All the Analytic Functions – MSDN and SQLAuthority and 14 New Functions – A Quick Guide. There are many functions written to figure out to figure out if any year is Leap Year or not. The same I have written using T-SQL function over here. CREATE FUNCTION dbo.IsLeapYear (@year INT) RETURNS INT AS BEGIN RETURN(IIF(DATEPART(dd,(EOMONTH(CONCAT(@year,'0201')))) = 29,1,0)) END GO What I really like is that I was able to use three newly introduced function in SQL Server 2012 in above script. You can read more about them here. IIF, EOMONTH and CONCAT. You can validate above query by running following script. SELECT dbo.IsLeapYear('2011') 'IsLeapYear'; SELECT dbo.IsLeapYear('2012') 'IsLeapYear'; GO You will get result 1 if the year is leap year and 0 if year is not leap year. • Event Logging in LINQ C# .NET

    The first thing you'll want to do before using this code is to create a table in your database called TableHistory: CREATE TABLE [dbo].[TableHistory] (     [TableHistoryID] [int] IDENTITY NOT NULL ,     [TableName] [varchar] (50) NOT NULL ,     [Key1] [varchar] (50) NOT NULL ,     [Key2] [varchar] (50) NULL ,     [Key3] [varchar] (50) NULL ,     [Key4] [varchar] (50) NULL ,     [Key5] [varchar] (50) NULL ,     [Key6] [varchar] (50)NULL ,     [ActionType] [varchar] (50) NULL ,     [Property] [varchar] (50) NULL ,     [OldValue] [varchar] (8000) NULL ,     [NewValue] [varchar] (8000) NULL ,     [ActionUserName] [varchar] (50) NOT NULL ,     [ActionDateTime] [datetime] NOT NULL ) Once you have created the table, you'll need to add it to your custom LINQ class (which I will refer to as DboDataContext), thus creating the TableHistory class. Then, you'll need to add the History.cs file to your project. You'll also want to add the following code to your project to get the system date: public partial class DboDataContext{ [Function(Name = "GetDate", IsComposable = true)] public DateTime GetSystemDate() { MethodInfo mi = MethodBase.GetCurrentMethod() as MethodInfo; return (DateTime)this.ExecuteMethodCall(this, mi, new object[] { }).ReturnValue; }}private static Dictionary<type,> _cachedIL = new Dictionary<type,>();public static T CloneObjectWithIL<t>(T myObject){ Delegate myExec = null; if (!_cachedIL.TryGetValue(typeof(T), out myExec)) { // Create ILGenerator DynamicMethod dymMethod = new DynamicMethod("DoClone", typeof(T), new Type[] { typeof(T) }, true); ConstructorInfo cInfo = myObject.GetType().GetConstructor(new Type[] { }); ILGenerator generator = dymMethod.GetILGenerator(); LocalBuilder lbf = generator.DeclareLocal(typeof(T)); //lbf.SetLocalSymInfo("_temp"); generator.Emit(OpCodes.Newobj, cInfo); generator.Emit(OpCodes.Stloc_0); foreach (FieldInfo field in myObject.GetType().GetFields( System.Reflection.BindingFlags.Instance | System.Reflection.BindingFlags.Public | System.Reflection.BindingFlags.NonPublic)) { // Load the new object on the eval stack... (currently 1 item on eval stack) generator.Emit(OpCodes.Ldloc_0); // Load initial object (parameter) (currently 2 items on eval stack) generator.Emit(OpCodes.Ldarg_0); // Replace value by field value (still currently 2 items on eval stack) generator.Emit(OpCodes.Ldfld, field); // Store the value of the top on the eval stack into // the object underneath that value on the value stack. // (0 items on eval stack) generator.Emit(OpCodes.Stfld, field); } // Load new constructed obj on eval stack -> 1 item on stack generator.Emit(OpCodes.Ldloc_0); // Return constructed object. --> 0 items on stack generator.Emit(OpCodes.Ret); myExec = dymMethod.CreateDelegate(typeof(Func<t,>)); _cachedIL.Add(typeof(T), myExec); } return ((Func<t,>)myExec)(myObject);}I got both of the above methods off of the net somewhere (maybe even from CodeProject), but it's been long enough that I can't recall where I got them.Explanation of the History ClassThe History class records changes by creating a TableHistory record, inserting the values for the primary key for the table being modified into the Key1, Key2, ..., Key6 columns (if you have more than 6 values that make up a primary key on any table, you'll want to modify this), setting the type of change being made in the ActionType column (INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE), old value and new value if it happens to be an update action, and the date and Windows identity of the user who made the change.Let's examine what happens when a call is made to the RecordLinqInsert method:public static void RecordLinqInsert(DboDataContext dbo, IIdentity user, object obj){ TableHistory hist = NewHistoryRecord(obj); hist.ActionType = "INSERT"; hist.ActionUserName = user.Name; hist.ActionDateTime = dbo.GetSystemDate(); dbo.TableHistories.InsertOnSubmit(hist);}private static TableHistory NewHistoryRecord(object obj){ TableHistory hist = new TableHistory(); Type type = obj.GetType(); PropertyInfo[] keys; if (historyRecordExceptions.ContainsKey(type)) { keys = historyRecordExceptions[type].ToArray(); } else { keys = type.GetProperties().Where(o => AttrIsPrimaryKey(o)).ToArray(); } if (keys.Length > KeyMax) throw new HistoryException("object has more than " + KeyMax.ToString() + " keys."); for (int i = 1; i <= keys.Length; i++) { typeof(TableHistory) .GetProperty("Key" + i.ToString()) .SetValue(hist, keys[i - 1].GetValue(obj, null).ToString(), null); } hist.TableName = type.Name; return hist;}protected static bool AttrIsPrimaryKey(PropertyInfo pi){ var attrs = from attr in pi.GetCustomAttributes(typeof(ColumnAttribute), true) where ((ColumnAttribute)attr).IsPrimaryKey select attr; if (attrs != null && attrs.Count() > 0) return true; else return false;}RecordLinqInsert takes as input a data context which it will use to write to the database, the user, and the LINQ object to be recorded (a single object, for instance, a Customer or Order object if you're using AdventureWorks). It then calls the NewHistoryRecord method, which uses LINQ to Objects in conjunction with the AttrIsPrimaryKey method to pull all the primary key properties, set the Key1-KeyN properties of the TableHistory object, and return the new TableHistory object. The code would be called in an application, like so: Continue span.fullpost {display:none;}

  • SQL SERVER – Working with FileTables in SQL Server 2012 – Part 2 – Methods to Insert Data Into Table

    - by pinaldave
Read Part 1 Working with FileTables in SQL Server 2012 – Part 1 – Setting Up Environment In this second part of the series, we will see how we can insert the files into the FileTables. There are two methods to insert the data into FileTables: Method 1: Copy Paste data into the FileTables folder First, find the folder where FileTable will be storing the files. Go to Databases >> Newly Created Database (FileTableDB) >> Expand Tables. Here you will see a new folder which says “FileTables”. When expanded, it gives the name of the newly created “FileTableTb”. Right click on the newly created table, and click on “Explore FileTable Directory”. This will open up the folder where the FileTable data will be stored. When clicked on the option it will open up following folder in my local machine where the FileTable data will be stored. \\127.0.0.1\mssqlserver\FileTableDB\FileTableTb_Dir You can just copy your document just there. I copied few word document there and ran select statement to see the result. USE [FileTableDB] GO SELECT * FROM FileTableTb GO SELECT * returns all the rows. Here is SELECT statement which has only few columns selected from FileTable. SELECT [name] ,[file_type] ,CAST([file_stream] AS VARCHAR) FileContent ,[cached_file_size] ,[creation_time] ,[last_write_time] ,[last_access_time] FROM [dbo].[FileTableTb] GO I believe this is the simplest method to populate FileTable, because you just have to move the files to the specific table. Method 2: T-SQL Insert Statement There are always cases when you might want to programmatically insert the images into SQL Server File table. Here is a quick method which you can use to insert the data in the file table. I have inserted a very small text file using T-SQL, and later on, reading that using SELECT statement demonstrated in method 1 above. INSERT INTO [dbo].[FileTableTb] ([name],[file_stream]) SELECT 'NewFile.txt', * FROM OPENROWSET(BULK N'd:\NewFile.txt', SINGLE_BLOB) AS FileData GO The above T-SQL statement will copy the NewFile.txt to new location. When you run SELECT statement, it will retrieve the file and list in the resultset. Additionally, it returns the content in the SELECT statement as well. I think it is a pretty interesting way to insert the data into the FileTable. SELECT [name] ,[file_type] ,CAST([file_stream] AS VARCHAR) FileContent ,[cached_file_size] ,[creation_time] ,[last_write_time] ,[last_access_time] FROM [dbo].[FileTableTb] GO There are more to FileTable and we will see those in my future blog posts. • Altering a Column Which has a Default Constraint

    - by Dinesh Asanka
Setting up a default column is a common task for  developers.  But, are we naming those default constraints explicitly? In the below  table creation, for the column, sys_DateTime the default value Getdate() will be allocated. CREATE TABLE SampleTable (ID int identity(1,1), Sys_DateTime Datetime DEFAULT getdate() ) We can check the relevant information from the system catalogs from following query. SELECT sc.name TableName, dc.name DefaultName, dc.definition, OBJECT_NAME(dc.parent_object_id) TableName, dc.is_system_named  FROM sys.default_constraints dc INNER JOIN sys.columns sc ON dc.parent_object_id = sc.object_id AND dc.parent_column_id = sc.column_id and results would be: Most of the above columns are self-explanatory. The last column, is_system_named, is to identify whether the default name was given by the system. As you know, in the above case, since we didn’t provide  any default name, the  system will generate a default name for you. But the problem with these names is that they can differ from environment to environment.  If example if I create this table in different table the default name could be DF__SampleTab__Sys_D__7E6CC920 Now let us create another default and explicitly name it: CREATE TABLE SampleTable2 (ID int identity(1,1), Sys_DateTime Datetime )   ALTER TABLE SampleTable2 ADD CONSTRAINT DF_sys_DateTime_Getdate DEFAULT( Getdate()) FOR Sys_DateTime If we run the previous query again we will be returned the below output. And you can see that last created default name has 0 for is_system_named. Now let us say I want to change the data type of the sys_DateTime column to something else: ALTER TABLE SampleTable2 ALTER COLUMN Sys_DateTime Date This will generate the below error: Msg 5074, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 The object ‘DF_sys_DateTime_Getdate’ is dependent on column ‘Sys_DateTime’. Msg 4922, Level 16, State 9, Line 1 ALTER TABLE ALTER COLUMN Sys_DateTime failed because one or more objects access this column. This means, you need to drop the default constraint before altering it: ALTER TABLE [dbo].[SampleTable2] DROP CONSTRAINT [DF_sys_DateTime_Getdate] ALTER TABLE SampleTable2 ALTER COLUMN Sys_DateTime Date   ALTER TABLE [dbo].[SampleTable2] ADD CONSTRAINT [DF_sys_DateTime_Getdate] DEFAULT (getdate()) FOR [Sys_DateTime] If you have a system named default constraint that can differ from environment to environment and so you cannot drop it as before, you can use the below code template: DECLARE @defaultname VARCHAR(255) DECLARE @executesql VARCHAR(1000)   SELECT @defaultname = dc.name FROM sys.default_constraints dc INNER JOIN sys.columns sc ON dc.parent_object_id = sc.object_id AND dc.parent_column_id = sc.column_id WHERE OBJECT_NAME (parent_object_id) = 'SampleTable' AND sc.name ='Sys_DateTime' SET @executesql = 'ALTER TABLE SampleTable DROP CONSTRAINT ' + @defaultname EXEC( @executesql) ALTER TABLE SampleTable ALTER COLUMN Sys_DateTime Date ALTER TABLE [dbo].[SampleTable] ADD DEFAULT (Getdate()) FOR [Sys_DateTime]

  • Working with packed dates in SSIS

    - by Jim Giercyk
One of the challenges recently thrown my way was to read an EBCDIC flat file, decode packed dates, and insert the dates into a SQL table.  For those unfamiliar with packed data, it is a way to store data at the nibble level (half a byte), and was often used by mainframe programmers to conserve storage space.  In the case of my input file, the dates were 2 bytes long and  represented the number of days that have past since 01/01/1950.  My first thought was, in the words of Scooby, Hmmmmph?  But, I love a good challenge, so I dove in. Reading in the flat file was rather simple.  The only difference between reading an EBCDIC and an ASCII file is the Code Page option in the connection manager.  In my case, I needed to use Code Page 1140 for EBCDIC (I could have also used Code Page 37).       Once the code page is set correctly, SSIS can understand what it is reading and it will convert the output to the default code page, 1252.  However, packed data is either unreadable or produces non-alphabetic characters, as we can see in the preview window.   Column 1 is actually the packed date, columns 0 and 2 are the values in the rest of the file.  We are only interested in Column 1, which is a 2 byte field representing a packed date.  We know that 2 bytes of packed data can be stored in 1 byte of character data, so we are working with 4 packed digits in 2 character bytes.  If you are confused, stay tuned….this will make sense in a minute.   Right-click on your Flat File Source shape and select “Show Advanced Editor”. Here is where the magic begins. By changing the properties of the output columns, we can access the packed digits from each byte. By default, the Output Column data type is DT_STR. Since we want to look at the bytes individually and not the entire string, change the data type to DT_BYTES. Next, and most important, set UseBinaryFormat to TRUE. This will write the HEX VALUES of the output string instead of writing the character values.  Now we are getting somewhere! Next, you will need to use a Data Conversion shape in your Data Flow to transform the 2 position byte stream to a 4 position Unicode string containing the packed data.  You need the string to be 4 bytes long because it will contain the 4 packed digits.  Here is what that should look like in the Data Conversion shape: Direct the output of your data flow to a test table or file to see the results.  In my case, I created a test table.  The results looked like this:     Hold on a second!  That doesn't look like a date at all.  No, of course not.  It is a hex number which represents the days which have passed between 01/01/1950 and the date.  We have to convert the Hex value to a decimal value, and use the DATEADD function to get a date value.  Luckily, I have created a function to convert Hex to Decimal:   -- ============================================= -- Author:        Jim Giercyk -- Create date: March, 2012 -- Description:    Converts a Hex string to a decimal value -- ============================================= CREATE FUNCTION [dbo].[ftn_HexToDec] (     @hexValue NVARCHAR(6) ) RETURNS DECIMAL AS BEGIN     -- Declare the return variable here DECLARE @decValue DECIMAL IF @hexValue LIKE '0x%' SET @hexValue = SUBSTRING(@hexValue,3,4) DECLARE @decTab TABLE ( decPos1 VARCHAR(2), decPos2 VARCHAR(2), decPos3 VARCHAR(2), decPos4 VARCHAR(2) ) DECLARE @pos1 VARCHAR(1) = SUBSTRING(@hexValue,1,1) DECLARE @pos2 VARCHAR(1) = SUBSTRING(@hexValue,2,1) DECLARE @pos3 VARCHAR(1) = SUBSTRING(@hexValue,3,1) DECLARE @pos4 VARCHAR(1) = SUBSTRING(@hexValue,4,1) INSERT @decTab VALUES (CASE               WHEN @pos1 = 'A' THEN '10'                 WHEN @pos1 = 'B' THEN '11'               WHEN @pos1 = 'C' THEN '12'               WHEN @pos1 = 'D' THEN '13'               WHEN @pos1 = 'E' THEN '14'               WHEN @pos1 = 'F' THEN '15'               ELSE @pos1              END, CASE               WHEN @pos2 = 'A' THEN '10'                 WHEN @pos2 = 'B' THEN '11'               WHEN @pos2 = 'C' THEN '12'               WHEN @pos2 = 'D' THEN '13'               WHEN @pos2 = 'E' THEN '14'               WHEN @pos2 = 'F' THEN '15'               ELSE @pos2              END, CASE               WHEN @pos3 = 'A' THEN '10'                 WHEN @pos3 = 'B' THEN '11'               WHEN @pos3 = 'C' THEN '12'               WHEN @pos3 = 'D' THEN '13'               WHEN @pos3 = 'E' THEN '14'               WHEN @pos3 = 'F' THEN '15'               ELSE @pos3              END, CASE               WHEN @pos4 = 'A' THEN '10'                 WHEN @pos4 = 'B' THEN '11'               WHEN @pos4 = 'C' THEN '12'               WHEN @pos4 = 'D' THEN '13'               WHEN @pos4 = 'E' THEN '14'               WHEN @pos4 = 'F' THEN '15'               ELSE @pos4              END) SET @decValue = (CONVERT(INT,(SELECT decPos4 FROM @decTab)))         +                 (CONVERT(INT,(SELECT decPos3 FROM @decTab))*16)      +                 (CONVERT(INT,(SELECT decPos2 FROM @decTab))*(16*16)) +                 (CONVERT(INT,(SELECT decPos1 FROM @decTab))*(16*16*16))     RETURN @decValue END GO     Making use of the function, I found the decimal conversion, added that number of days to 01/01/1950 and FINALLY arrived at my “unpacked relative date”.  Here is the query I used to retrieve the formatted date, and the result set which was returned: SELECT [packedDate] AS 'Hex Value',        dbo.ftn_HexToDec([packedDate]) AS 'Decimal Value',        CONVERT(DATE,DATEADD(day,dbo.ftn_HexToDec([packedDate]),'01/01/1950'),101) AS 'Relative String Date'   FROM [dbo].[Output Table]         This technique can be used any time you need to retrieve the hex value of a character string in SSIS.  The date example may be a bit difficult to understand at first, but with SSIS becoming the preferred tool for enterprise level integration for many companies, there is no doubt that developers will encounter these types of requirements with regularity in the future. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

  • Update from Ola Hallengren: Target multiple devices during SQL Server backup

    - by Greg Low
Ola has produced another update of his database management scripts. If you haven't taken a look at them, you should. At the very least, they'll give you good ideas about what to implement and how others have done so. The latest update allows targeting multiple devices during backup. This is available in native SQL Server backup and can be helpful with very large databases. Ola's scripts now support it as well.Details are here: http://ola.hallengren.com/sql-server-backup.html http://ola.hallengren.com/versions.html The following example shows it backing up to 4 files on 4 drives, one file on each drive:EXECUTE dbo.DatabaseBackup@Databases = 'USER_DATABASES',@Directory = 'C:\Backup, D:\Backup, E:\Backup, F:\Backup',@BackupType = 'FULL',@Compress = 'Y',@NumberOfFiles = 4And this example shows backing up to 16 files on 4 drives, 4 files on each drive: EXECUTE dbo.DatabaseBackup@Databases = 'USER_DATABASES',@Directory = 'C:\Backup, D:\Backup, E:\Backup, F:\Backup',@BackupType = 'FULL',@Compress = 'Y',@NumberOfFiles = 16Ola mentioned that you can now back up to up to 64 drives.

  • Catching multiple exceptions on the client is robust and easy

    - by Alexander Kuznetsov
Maria Zakourdaev has just demonstrated that if our T-SQL throws multiple exceptions, ERROR_MESSAGE() in TRY..CATCH block will only expose one. When we handle errors in C#, we have a very easy access to all errors. The following procedure throws two exceptions: CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.ThrowsTwoExceptions AS BEGIN ; RAISERROR ( 'Error 1' , 16 , 1 ) ; RAISERROR ( 'Error 2' , 16 , 1 ) ; END ; GO EXEC dbo.ThrowsTwoExceptions ; Both exceptions are shown by SSMS: Msg 50000 , LEVEL 16 , State 1 , PROCEDURE...(read more)

  • Insert Or update (aka Replace or Upsert)

    - by Davide Mauri
The topic is really not new but since it’s the second time in few days that I had to explain it different customers, I think it’s worth to make a post out of it. Many times developers would like to insert a new row in a table or, if the row already exists, update it with new data. MySQL has a specific statement for this action, called REPLACE: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/replace.html or the INSERT …. ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE option: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/insert-on-duplicate.html With SQL Server you can do the very same using a more standard way, using the MERGE statement, with the support of Row Constructors. Let’s say that you have this table: CREATE TABLE dbo.MyTargetTable (     id INT NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY IDENTITY,     alternate_key VARCHAR(50) UNIQUE,     col_1 INT,     col_2 INT,     col_3 INT,     col_4 INT,     col_5 INT ) GO INSERT [dbo].[MyTargetTable] VALUES ('GUQNH', 10, 100, 1000, 10000, 100000), ('UJAHL', 20, 200, 2000, 20000, 200000), ('YKXVW', 30, 300, 3000, 30000, 300000), ('SXMOJ', 40, 400, 4000, 40000, 400000), ('JTPGM', 50, 500, 5000, 50000, 500000), ('ZITKS', 60, 600, 6000, 60000, 600000), ('GGEYD', 70, 700, 7000, 70000, 700000), ('UFXMS', 80, 800, 8000, 80000, 800000), ('BNGGP', 90, 900, 9000, 90000, 900000), ('AMUKO', 100, 1000, 10000, 100000, 1000000) GO If you want to insert or update a row, you can just do that: MERGE INTO     dbo.MyTargetTable T USING     (SELECT * FROM (VALUES ('ZITKS', 61, 601, 6001, 60001, 600001)) Dummy(alternate_key, col_1, col_2, col_3, col_4, col_5)) S ON     T.alternate_key = S.alternate_key WHEN     NOT MATCHED THEN     INSERT VALUES (alternate_key, col_1, col_2, col_3, col_4, col_5) WHEN     MATCHED AND T.col_1 != S.col_1 THEN     UPDATE SET         T.col_1 = S.col_1,         T.col_2 = S.col_2,         T.col_3 = S.col_3,         T.col_4 = S.col_4,         T.col_5 = S.col_5 ; If you want to insert/update more than one row at once, you can super-charge the idea using Table-Value Parameters, that you can just send from your .NET application. Easy, powerful and effective

  • SQL server deadlock between INSERT and SELECT statement

    - by dtroy
    Hi! I've got a problem with multiple deadlocks on SQL server 2005. This one is between an INSERT and a SELECT statement. There are two tables. Table 1 and Table2. Table2 has Table1's PK (table1_id) as foreign key. Index on table1_id is clustered. The INSERT inserts a single row into table2 at a time. The SELCET joins the 2 tables. (it's a long query which might take up to 12 secs to run) According to my understanding (and experiments) the INSERT should acquire an IS lock on table1 to check referential integrity (which should not cause a deadlock). But, in this case it acquired an IX page lock The deadlock report: <deadlock-list> <deadlock victim="process968898"> <process-list> <process id="process8db1f8" taskpriority="0" logused="2424" waitresource="OBJECT: 5:789577851:0 " waittime="12390" ownerId="61831512" transactionname="user_transaction" lasttranstarted="2010-04-16T07:10:13.347" XDES="0x222a8250" lockMode="IX" schedulerid="1" kpid="3764" status="suspended" spid="52" sbid="0" ecid="0" priority="0" transcount="2" lastbatchstarted="2010-04-16T07:10:13.350" lastbatchcompleted="2010-04-16T07:10:13.347" clientapp=".Net SqlClient Data Provider" hostname="VIDEV01-B-ME" hostpid="3040" loginname="DatabaseName" isolationlevel="read uncommitted (1)" xactid="61831512" currentdb="5" lockTimeout="4294967295" clientoption1="671088672" clientoption2="128056"> <executionStack> <frame procname="DatabaseName.dbo.prcTable2_Insert" line="18" stmtstart="576" stmtend="1148" sqlhandle="0x0300050079e62d06e9307f000b9d00000100000000000000"> INSERT INTO dbo.Table2 ( f1, table1_id, f2 ) VALUES ( @p1, @p_DocumentVersionID, @p1 ) </frame> </executionStack> <inputbuf> Proc [Database Id = 5 Object Id = 103671417] </inputbuf> </process> <process id="process968898" taskpriority="0" logused="0" waitresource="PAGE: 5:1:46510" waittime="7625" ownerId="61831406" transactionname="INSERT" lasttranstarted="2010-04-16T07:10:12.717" XDES="0x418ec00" lockMode="S" schedulerid="2" kpid="1724" status="suspended" spid="53" sbid="0" ecid="0" priority="0" transcount="2" lastbatchstarted="2010-04-16T07:10:12.713" lastbatchcompleted="2010-04-16T07:10:12.713" clientapp=".Net SqlClient Data Provider" hostname="VIDEV01-B-ME" hostpid="3040" loginname="DatabaseName" isolationlevel="read committed (2)" xactid="61831406" currentdb="5" lockTimeout="4294967295" clientoption1="671088672" clientoption2="128056"> <executionStack> <frame procname="DatabaseName.dbo.prcGetList" line="64" stmtstart="3548" stmtend="11570" sqlhandle="0x03000500dbcec17e8d267f000b9d00000100000000000000"> <!-- XXXXXXXXXXXXXX...SELECT STATEMENT WITH Multiple joins including both Table2 table 1 and .... Am I not reading the deadlock report properly? BTW, I have not managed to reproduce this issue. Thanks!

  • sql perfomance on new server

    - by Rapunzo
    My database is running on a pc (AMD Phenom x6, intel ssd disk, 8GB DDR3 RAM and windows 7 OS + sql server 2008 R2 sp3 ) and it started working hard, timeout problems and up to 30 seconds long queries after 200 mb of database And I also have an old server pc (IBM x-series 266: 72*3 15k rpm scsi discs with raid5, 4 gb ram and windows server 2003 + sql server 2008 R2 sp3 ) and same query start to give results in 100 seconds.. I tried query analyser tool for tuning my indexed. but not so much improvements. its a big dissapointment for me. because I thought even its an old server pc it should be more powerfull with 15k rpm discs with raid5. what should I do. do I need $10.000 new server to get a good performance for my sql server? cant I use that IBM server? Extra information: there is 50 sql users and its an ERP program. There is my query ALTER FUNCTION [dbo].[fnDispoTerbiye] ( ) RETURNS TABLE AS RETURN ( SELECT MD.dispoNo, SV.sevkNo, M1.musteriAdi AS musteri, SD.tipTurId, TT.tipTur, SD.tipNo, SD.desenNo, SD.varyantNo, SUM(T.topMetre) AS toplamSevkMetre, MD.dispoMetresi, DT.gelisMetresi, ISNULL(DT.fire, 0) AS fire, SV.sevkTarihi, DT.gelisTarihi, SP.mamulTermin, SD.miktar AS siparisMiktari, M.musteriAdi AS boyahane, MD.akisNotu AS islemler, --dbo.fnAkisIslemleri(MD.dispoNo) DT.partiNo, DT.iplikBoyaId, B.tanimAd AS BoyaTuru, MAX(HD.hamEn) AS hamEn, MAX(HD.hamGramaj) AS hamGramaj, TS.mamulEn, TS.mamulGramaj, DT.atkiCekmesi, DT.cozguCekmesi, DT.fiyat, DV.dovizCins, DT.dovizId, (SELECT CASE WHEN DT.dovizId = 2 THEN CAST(round(SUM(T .topMetre) * DT.fiyat * (SELECT TOP 1 satis FROM tblKur WHERE dovizId = 2 ORDER BY tarih DESC), 2) AS numeric(18, 2)) WHEN DT.dovizId = 3 THEN CAST(round(SUM(T .topMetre) * DT.fiyat * (SELECT TOP 1 satis FROM tblKur WHERE dovizId = 3 ORDER BY tarih DESC), 2) AS numeric(18, 2)) WHEN DT.dovizId = 1 THEN CAST(round(SUM(T .topMetre) * DT.fiyat * (SELECT TOP 1 satis FROM tblKur WHERE dovizId = 1 ORDER BY tarih DESC), 2) AS numeric(18, 2)) END AS Expr1) AS ToplamTLfiyat, DT.aciklama, MD.dispoNotu, SD.siparisId, SD.siparisDetayId, DT.sqlUserName, DT.kayitTarihi, O.orguAd, 'Çözgü=(' + (SELECT dbo.fnTipIplikler(SD.tipTurId, SD.tipNo, SD.desenNo, SD.varyantNo, 1) AS Expr1) + ')' + ' Atki=(' + (SELECT dbo.fnTipIplikler(SD.tipTurId, SD.tipNo, SD.desenNo, SD.varyantNo, 2) AS Expr1) + ')' AS iplikAciklama, DT.prosesOk, dbo.[fnYikamaTalimat](SP.siparisId) yikamaTalimati FROM tblDoviz AS DV WITH(NOLOCK) INNER JOIN tblDispoTerbiye AS DT WITH(NOLOCK) INNER JOIN tblTanimlar AS B WITH(NOLOCK) ON DT.iplikBoyaId = B.tanimId AND B.tanimTurId = 2 ON DV.id = DT.dovizId RIGHT OUTER JOIN tblMusteri AS M1 WITH(NOLOCK) INNER JOIN tblSiparisDetay AS SD WITH(NOLOCK) INNER JOIN tblDispo AS MD WITH(NOLOCK) ON SD.siparisDetayId = MD.siparisDetayId INNER JOIN tblTipTur AS TT WITH(NOLOCK) ON SD.tipTurId = TT.tipTurId INNER JOIN tblSiparis AS SP WITH(NOLOCK) ON SD.siparisId = SP.siparisId ON M1.musteriNo = SP.musteriNo INNER JOIN tblTip AS TP WITH(NOLOCK) ON SD.tipTurId = TP.tipTurId AND SD.tipNo = TP.tipNo AND SD.desenNo = TP.desen AND SD.varyantNo = TP.varyant INNER JOIN tblOrgu AS O WITH(NOLOCK) ON TP.orguId = O.orguId INNER JOIN tblMusteri AS M WITH(NOLOCK) INNER JOIN tblSevkiyat AS SV WITH(NOLOCK) ON M.musteriNo = SV.musteriNo INNER JOIN tblSevkDetay AS SVD WITH(NOLOCK) ON SV.sevkNo = SVD.sevkNo ON MD.mamulDispoHamSevkno = SV.sevkNo LEFT OUTER JOIN tblTop AS T WITH(NOLOCK) INNER JOIN tblDispo AS HD WITH(NOLOCK) ON T.dispoNo = HD.dispoNo AND T.dispoTuruId = HD.dispoTuruId ON SVD.dispoTuruId = T.dispoTuruId AND SVD.dispoNo = T.dispoNo AND SVD.topNo = T.topNo AND MD.siparisDetayId = HD.siparisDetayId ON DT.dispoTuruId = MD.dispoTuruId AND DT.dispoNo = MD.dispoNo LEFT OUTER JOIN tblDispoTerbiyeTest AS TS WITH(NOLOCK) ON DT.dispoTuruId = TS.dispoTuruId AND DT.dispoNo = TS.dispoNo --WHERE DT.gelisTarihi IS NULL -- OR DT.gelisTarihi > GETDATE()-30 GROUP BY MD.dispoNo, DT.partiNo, DT.iplikBoyaId, TS.mamulEn, TS.mamulGramaj, DT.gelisMetresi, DT.gelisTarihi, DT.atkiCekmesi, DT.cozguCekmesi, DT.fire, DT.fiyat, DT.aciklama, DT.sqlUserName, DT.kayitTarihi, SD.tipTurId, TT.tipTur, SD.tipNo, SD.desenNo, SD.varyantNo, SD.siparisId, SD.siparisDetayId, B.tanimAd, M.musteriAdi, M.musteriAdi, M1.musteriAdi, O.orguAd, TP.iplikAciklama, SD.miktar, MD.dispoNotu, SP.mamulTermin, DT.dovizId, DV.dovizCins, MD.dispoMetresi, MD.akisNotu, SV.sevkNo, SV.sevkTarihi, DT.prosesOk,SP.siparisId )

  • Scripting an automated SQLServer 2008 DR move

    - by ItsAMystery
Hi All We use the built in logshipping in SQLServer to logship to our DR site but once in a month do a DR test which requires us to move back and forth between our Live and BAckup servers. We run multiple (30) databases on the system so manually backing up the final logs and disabling the jobs is too much work and takes too long. I though no problem, I will script it but have run into trouble with it always complaninig that the final logship is too early to apply even though I dont export the final log until putting the database into norecovery mode. Firstly, does any one no a simple and reliable way of doing this? I have lokoed at some 3rd party software (redgate sqlbackup I think it was) but that didnt make it easy in this situation either. What I want to be able to do is basically run a script (a series of stored procedures) to get me to DR and run another to get me back with no dataloss. My scripts are very simplistic at the moment but here they are: 2 servers Primary Paris Secondary ParisT The StartAgentJobAndWait is a script written by someone else (ta) and just checks the jobs have finished or quits it if it never ends. At the moment I am just using a test database called BOB2 but if I can get it working will pass in the database and job names. from PARIS: /* Disable backup job */ exec msdb..sp_update_job @job_name = 'LSBackup_BOB2', @enabled = 0 exec PARIST.msdb..sp_update_job @job_name = 'LSCopy_PARIS_BOB2', @enabled = 0 exec PARIST.msdb..sp_update_job @job_name = 'LSRestore_PARIS_BOB2', @enabled = 0 exec PARIST.master.dbo.DRStage2 ParisT DRStage2 DECLARE @RetValue varchar (10) EXEC @RetValue = StartAgentJobAndWait LSCopy_PARIS_BOB2 , 2 SELECT ReturnValue=@RetValue if @RetValue = 1 begin print 'The Copy Task completed Succesffuly' END ELSE print 'The Copy task failed, This may or may not be a problem, check restore state of database' SELECT @RetValue = 0 EXEC @RetValue = StartAgentJobAndWait LSRestore_PARIS_BOB2 , 2 SELECT ReturnValue=@RetValue if @RetValue = 1 begin print 'The Restore Task completed Succesffuly' END ELSE print 'The Copy task failed, This may or may not be a problem, check restore state of database' exec PARIS.master.dbo.DRStage3 /* Do the last logship and move it to Trumpington */ BACKUP log "BOB2" to disk='c:\drlogshipping\BOB2.bak' with compression, norecovery EXEC xp_cmdshell 'copy c:\drlogshipping \\192.168.7.11\drlogshipping' EXEC PARIST.master.dbo.DRTransferFinish AS BEGIN restore database "BOB2" from disk='c:\drlogshipping\bob2.bak' with recovery

  • SQL 2005 AD Group permission levels

    - by jj.
I'm trying to give permissions to a (sql 2005) database app based on AD groups. The general idea is to require a user to have a membership to "app_users" to view anything, and membership to other groups gives them write access to that group. "app_customers" gives write access to the customers module, "app_sales" to sales, etc. I've listed an example below: user1: AD member of app_users user2: AD member of app_users, app_customers For dbo.customers table: app_users - Granted: Select permission - Denied: Insert, Update, Delete app_customers - Granted: Select permission - Granted: Insert, Update, Delete I would expect user1 to be able to view the dbo.customers table, but will not be allowed to modify anything (insert/update/delete) - which works. In the same vein, I would expect user2 to be able to view AND modify the dbo.customers table, since they are a member of app_customers. However, this is not the case. Instead, user2 is denied any modifications just like user1. I seem to remember something about deny permissions winning if there was a conflict, but it's honestly been too long since I've dealt with them. Am I going about this the right way? Thanks for your time!
