  • SQLAuthority News – Presented Soft Skill Session on Presentation Skills at SQL Bangalore on May 3, 2014

    I have presented on various database technologies for almost 10 years now. SQL, Database and NoSQL have been part of my life. Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to present on the topic Performing an Effective Presentation. I must say it was blast to prepare as well as present this session. This event was part of the SQL Bangalore community. If you are in Bangalore, you must be part of this group. SQL Bangalore is a wonderful community and we always have a great response when we present on technology. It is SQL User Group and we discuss everything SQL there. This month we had SQL Server 2014 theme and we had a community launch of SQL Server. We have the best of the best speakers presenting on SQL Server 2014 technology. The event had amazing speakers and each of them did justice to the subject. You can read about this over here. In this session I told a story from my life. I talked about who inspired me and how I learned to speak in public. I told stories about two legends  who have inspired me. There is no video recording of this session.   • Is it worth being computer languages polyglot?

    You can often hear that programmers should learn many different languages to improve themselves. I still go to school and don't have big programming experience (a little more than year). But what was noble intention to improve programming skills turned into some kind of OCD: I feel that I won't calm down until I learn all relatively known programming languages. And here is question itself: Will being programming languages polyglot actually help you (And I don't mean usual "Programmer should know at least all paradigms", I mean really all languages you usually hear about)? Does anybody have similar experience? Does it help with job/skills/career? How often are you able to apply those skills?

  • A good example project to 'prove' my skills [closed]

    I've been a commercial programmer for about 3 years now but all of my commercial work is based upon PHP (with Cake PHP, Wordpress and Wildfire) and ASP.Net (on C#, including MVC 3, Umbraco and Kentico) as well as plenty of HTML/CSS/jQuery examples to show. A future employer has asked me to show my Ruby on Rails potential. I've done Ruby on Rails before for fun, but nothing worthy of commercial showing. What I'd like to know, from a group of programmers, is what would be a good 'portfolio demo' piece for you? What have you seen in the past that impressed you? What are you looking for? For Ruby lead developers specifically, what sort of things are you looking to see in the code? Cheers!

  • Starting an HTML canvas game with no graphics skills

    I want to do some hobby game development, but I have some unfortunate handicaps that have me stuck in indecision; I have no artistic talent, and I also have no experience with 3D graphics. But this is just a hobby project that might not go anywhere, so I want to develop the stuff I care about; if the game shows good potential, my graphic "stubs" can be replaced with something more sophisticated. I do, however, want my graphics engine to render something approximate to the end goal. The game is tile-based, with each tile being a square. Each tile also has an elevation. My target platform (subject to modification) is JavaScript rendering to the HTML 5 canvas, either with a 2D or WebGL context. My question to those of you with game development experience is whether it's easier to develop an isometric game using a 2D graphics engine and sprites or a 3D game using rudimentary 3D primitives and basic textures? I realize that there are limitations to isometric projection, but if it makes developing my throwaway graphics engine easier, I'm OK with the visual warts that would be introduced. Or is representing a 3D world with an actual 3D engine easier?

  • Interviewing someone for general unix skills

    How would you test a developer that claims to have *nix shell experience (just to be clear, we don't want to test if someone can develop on *nix, only that they know their way around the command line). I was thinking about making them solve a problem of getting information out of log files, which would involve some basics like cat, grep, cut, ... combined with piping. What other basic knowledge would you ask for? Once again, this isn't for interviewing someone who will develop for *nix systems, and also not for *nix system admins, but just for regular developers that sometimes need to do some work on a *nix system.

  • Skills to Focus on to land Big 5 Software Engineer Position

    Guys, I'm in my penultimate quarter of grad school and have a software engineering internship lined up at a big 5 tech company. I have dabbled a lot recently in Python and am average at Java. I want to prepare myself for coding interviews when I apply for new grad positions at the Big 5 tech companies when I graduate at the end of this year. Since I want to have a good shot at all 5 companies (Amazon,Google,Yahoo,Microsoft and Apple) - Should I focus my time and effort on mastering and improving my Java. Or is my time better spent checking out other languages and tools ( Attracted to RoR, Clojure, Git, C# ) I am planning to spend my spring break implementing all the common algorithms and Data structure out of my algorithms textbook in Java.

    I never know where it's acceptable to post something like this, so please forgive if it's in the wrong place. I'm very interested in going further in to web development; I know a bit of javascript, a bit of php, and so forth, but I'm now seeing these services that will go from psd to wordpress for 200 bucks and I'm wondering how the hell is anyone able to compete with this? So I'm wondering if those more knowledgeable than me could tell me what areas are the least likely to be able to be outsourced, for 5 bucks to some kid in Uzbekistan( no offense to that kid).. do you think it's on the database management side, or maybe app development? ideas appreciated.

I am about to graduate from a good school (in the US) with Computer Science degree, having good grades and high GPA. I have no freaking clue how to write a good program, how to properly test it... nada, zero. We were never been taught how to write software. Ye, sure the Comp. Architecture class is important, and I can tell you a lot about how MIPS processor works, and I can tell you about Binary Trees and Red-Black Trees and running time of operations in Big Oh, but it has nothing to do with programming in "real" life. For god sake, none of my classmates know how to use STLs or write templated code! To be honest, I found that many of my classes to be waste of time. What should I do ? How to step into real life and learn how to program ?

  • Debugging Windows

    After installing VS 2008 on a new PC I noticed that the Autos and Locals windows did not show up when debugging. So I went to the logical place to find them View/Other Windows. No luck they were not there. I use VS every day but like a lot of folks I only need to install it every few years, usually with a new PC. So I forgot where they were. Finding them is easy, just start debugging a project and go to Debug/Windows. The Autos and Locals windows along with the others will be there.   • Can't hit breakpoint in ASP.NET web app (Stop debugging in progress... popup in VS)

    Hi, I am trying to debug some code in my ASP.NET web app. I set a breakpoint in one of the page events of the page's codebehind, and this once came up with a special icon in place of the red breakpoint saying symbols have not been loaded and the breakpoint will not be hit. This error has not repeated itself but why can't I hit the breakpoint? Also, when I press stop, I get a popup in VS stating: Stop Debugging In Progres... Debugging is being stopped but is not yet complete. You can force debugging to stop completely, but any processes attached may terminate. This window will automatically close when debugging has completely stopped. Completely stop I also don't get the website appear in my browser either when starting to debug. :( To make things worse, I have a line of code like this in my page's codebehind: RssFeedSites = opml.Parse(filestream); I am putting the problematic breakpoint on this line. But I have a programatic breakpoint in the Parse() method of opml, but this does not get hit, either. Thanks

Thus I haven't work with any Java projects that's bigger than say 20-30 java files. I'm finishing off my degree and I want to work as a developer, particularly in mobile area. Do I have enough skills to be recruited by good companies?

  • Based on your development stack, which is easier for you and why? Debugging or logging?

    Please state if you are developing on the front end, back end, or if you are developing a mobile/desktop application. List your development stack Language, IDE, etc.. Unit Testing or no Unit Testing Be sure to include any AOP frameworks if used. Tell me if it is easier for you to use debugging or to using logging during development, and why you feel it is easier. I'm just trying to get a feel for why people choose debugging or logging based on their development stack.
