  • React to a modified directory

    In linux everything is considered as file, Now if I want to find only folders/directories not the files then how can i do that? I am getting all the modified files with the following command. find /Users/ghanshyam -type f -mmin -5 -print My goal is to generate the log file with all the modified/access folders. Here two options are available. create a module and call every time when a folder is modified (this one is bit difficult because I need to check particular event) create a cron task that will run after every 5 minutes. cron task will execute shell script and generate the log entries with the modified folders. Do you have any other option to do this task ?

    I have simple problem that I have to long directories which I want to cd into, but I would like to know easy way. mosquito@mosquito-K56CB:~/Downloads$ ls | grep Guns Guns n' Roses - Appetite for Destruction (Japanese Edition) 1987 Guns n' Roses - Use Your Illusion I 1991 Of course I can just copy the name and put it like this: cd "Guns n' Roses - Appetite for Destruction (Japanese Edition) 1987" But why when I write cd Guns then tab, it finishes line into: cd Guns\ n\'\ Roses\ -\ then by my understanding I should just start writing App.. with tab and it should finish whole name, but it does not. And hitting tab twice does not show me anything either. What I am missing here?

  • Linking Linux MIT Kerberos with a Windows 2003 Active Directory

    Greetings, I was wondering how one might link a Linux MIT Kerberos with a Windows 2003 Active Directory to achieve the following: A user, [email protected], attempts to log in at an Apache website, which runs on the same server as the Linux MIT Kerberos. The Apache module first asks the local Linux MIT Kerberos if he knows a user by that name or realm. The MIT Kerberos finds out it isn't responsible for that realm, and forwards the request to the Windows 2003 Active Directory. The Windows 2003 Active Directory replies positively and gives this information to the Linux MIT Kerberos, which in turn tells this to the Apache module, which grants the user access to its files. The documentation I have read concerning this issue often differ from this problem: Some discuss linking up a MIT Kerberos with an Active Directory to gain access to resources on the Active Directory server; While another uses the link to authenticate Windows users to the MIT Kerberos through the Windows 2003 Active Directory. (My problem is the other way around.) So what my question boils down to, is this: Is it possible to have a Linux MIT Kerberos server pass through requests for a Active Directory realm, and then have it receive the reply and give it to the requesting service? (Although it's not a problem if the requesting service and the Windows 2003 Active Directory communicate directly.) Suggestions and constructive criticism are greatly appreciated. :)

    I have a directory structure owned by a certain group, and I am a member of the group that owns these directories. The Inbox sits at the following location /home/admin/MyLibrary/MyVideos/Inbox /home/admin/MyLibrary/MyVideos/Movies The system is a Netgear Stora NAS box that I have root access to. The /home/ folder is mounted as an smb share on various computers around the house. The folder /Inbox cannot be opened on any of those machines (they all connect as 'admin'). When I ssh into the box using the 'admin' credentials I am also unable to access the folder. The folder was created via a Web Admin page hosted on the NAS. The user/group for the Inbox folder was previously apache:www (expected as this folder was created by the web application), but I chmod/chowned the folder as the root user in an attempt to grant the admin user (therefore the rest of the connected machines) access to the files. Sorry for not including this earlier, I wasn't sure if it was relevant and didn't want to confuse the situation. -Thanks 3rd Edit Sorry again - It looks like this NAS is running some custom version of Red Hat, not Debian as previously stated - I'm not sure if this makes a difference

  • FTP User cannot modify files but has correct permissions

    I have created a new user (foo) and when he logs in via ftp he cannot edit the files in the directory to which he has access. In the directory he can log into ls -l gives me: -rw-rw-r-- 1 root www-pub 6427 Nov 17 04:21 index.html The user belongs to the group www-pub. Here is the output of cat /etc/group to demonstrate that he is indeed in that group: ... www-pub:x:1001:ftpuser,www-data,foo foo:x:1002: *edit the permissions on the containing directory are: drwxrwsr-x 5 root www-pub 4096 Nov 17 02:53 thecontainingdir and the one above that: drwxrwsr-x 49 root www-pub 4096 Nov 16 02:40 thenextdirup So since he can log in via ftp and since the file he needs to edit has the correct permissions to let the group www-pub read and write the file and he is a member of that group, why can't he edit it (or upload anything)? Only when I change the file to 777 can he edit it. It's as if he's NOT in the group... but he is! What's going on?

  • Wrong owner and group for files created under a samba shared directory

    I am trying to make writing to a shared samba directory work. I got a very weird problem. Now the shared directory is writable from a client machine. But the files created under the samba share directory have weird owner and group names. I am writing to the shared directory as user mike under the client machine, but the file created always has user and group name as steve instead... Does anybody know why that would happen...? Another thing I just noticed is that on the samba server, the files have owner and user name as samba, which I created for samba clients. Thanks a lot

    I would like to give a potential developer temporary access to some of my projects. I have almost everything in its own subdomain, and each directory is a sibling to my public_html directory. It looks something like: ("developer" is the cPanel account name.) developer/ *This is the top level directory for the cPanel account. "/home/developer" site1/ *site1.mysite.com site2/ *site2.mysite.com site3/ *site3.mysite.com public_html/ *www.mysite.com ... etc I created a directory inside public_html called tempdev and I added symbolic links to each of the sibling directories listed above. My understanding of cPanel is that I can only assign one user with "Special FTP Access" per domain. I really dont want to give a complete stranger my login creds, (its just a development environment but still). So I used the cPanel FTP account creator UI. It will not allow me to assign the user access to the directories outside of public_html. I cant even give access to public_html either. So I made the tempdev directory in www and created the symlinks. Using the new account, I can see the symlinks, but I can go into them. Is there a better way to accomplish what I am attempting?

  • Apache, Permissions, and Convenience

    I'm on Mac OSX and i I have apache2 installed via MacPorts, running as the _www user. I have some files I want to serve in the /Users/Me/Documents/abc folder. Right now, though, the permissions of /Users/Me/Documents are 700. So, _www can't get in, even if abc is chmod 777. I recognize the following options: Allow _www access to my Documents folder. Put the files I want to share outside of my Documents folder. Hard-link the files outside of my Documents folder, and point apache to the hard links. None of these solutions are acceptable to me, however. I don't feel safe allowing _www access to my entire Documents folder. I really want to keep the files in my Documents folder for other reasons. The files are changing all the time, so hard-linking would not always reflect the right file structure, and, as I understand it, you can't hard-link a directory (though, if you could, that would solve it). Any ideas for a solution? Is there a way to run a few httpd processes as my user account so it can get in there? Or, is there some way to hard-link a directory, or some way to get httpd to follow a symlink past a directory that is 700 not owned by _www? Thanks!

  • Unable to create files in a directory

    I have created a directory in Virutalbox. Using VBoxManage, I am executing a script inside the Ubuntu VM directory I created above from Ubuntu host OS. But if the script in the VM contains commands for creating a new file, they are not executing. "echo" commands before and after the touch ommand are working fine. I even used root user for VBoxManage to install. I think the directory is not allowing the files to be created . How can I make a directory in Linux to be 777 to all new files created automatically. I mean, even if I make the directory (chmod 777 dir), I am unable to execute the script from the host. Please help. It may be simple permissions problem. Even root is unable to execute.   • Are my web server permissions for uploading correct?

    I'm on debian and I have my website in the directory /srv/www/mysite.com/public_html I set chown for www-data:www-data on /srv/www. I have root disabled and created a sudo user which is id 1000:1000. I would also like to use this user to upload to /srv/www so I added my sudo user to the www-data group. I originally got a message saying that I didn't have permissions to upload a file to that directory. After playing around with multiple permissions for a while I finally was able to upload properly, but I'm not sure if this set up is correct. I'm hesitant to change it for now since it actually works, so I thought I'd ask for advice. I think what I ended up doing was this: sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /srv/www sudo chmod g+s /srv/www sudo usermod -aG www-data myuser sudo chgrp -R www-data /srv/www sudo chmod -R g+w /srv/www When I was finally able to successfully upload a file (with FileZilla) it showed the owner as myuser myuser. Shouldn't it have been www-data myuser? My question is whether this is correct and if there are any potential security issues? For example, I wasn't sure if I was actually supposed to use "myuser" to own the /srv/www directory instead sudo chown -R myuser:myuser /srv/www or maybe sudo chown -R www-data:myuser /srv/www If you need more info, let me know, thanks.

  • Make my git user and apache user have read/write/delete access

    I am having permission problems on my server. I use user developer to pull my git repository on the server. Then apache uses its own apache user to do write and execute code. I always have the problems when the app wants to write something in the directory (i.e: log files, and cache ...) if I execute a cron job and it uses my developer rights and wants to add something to the folders that is written by apache. My question is how to have my developer have the same write/delete access as my apache and avoid permission conflicts with each other? I am not fluent on linux command so, it would help if you could provide links or simply examples of doing so. thanks.

  • Matlab computations done over Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) depend on POSIX permissions, ignores ACLs

    I'm a system administrator and have never used Matlab, so forgive my general ignorance of the program. My users have encountered problems when executing scripted Matlab actions over AFP to a Mac OS X Server 10.6.7 where the access control list (ACL) should allow actions, but the POSIX-style permissions disallow the activity. It seems as if Matlab, run locally on the Mac workstations on datasets on the remote server, ignores the ACLs entirely. This is the only application I've ever seen behave this way. The server's filesystem is HFS+J and all other activity is performing as expected. These users cannot use CIFS because of our integration with external directory systems. In this example, the directory bxdata, the members of the group cibturner should be able to modify the files. Indeed, they can using any other method except via Matlab scripts. When the Matlab script hits these files, the POSIX permissions of 644 disallow modification. It's as if the ACLs are irrelevant.   • How to restrict user to a particular folder in CentOS 6?

    I will need to create users so developers can log in and clone/pull/push changes/repositories from a github like platform. I've managed to add a user (using the root) to this CentOS machine; I now have this line in /etc/passwd: chris:x:32008:32010::/home/chris/public_html:/bin/bash ..and this in /etc/shadow: chris:$1$ruUeLtTu$onAY2hdu1J.UmHajEIlmR.:15385:0:99999:7::: I am able to SSH the server, I have permission to create a folder and I guess that should be enough. But I am able to see other files and folders outside public_html. How can I actually restrict the user to a particular directory so he can't "cd out" of his folder? The development server I have just setup (I am a novice to servers) is Debian Lenny with Apache2, PHP5, and MySQL5. The file transfer works correctly, but once the file has been written to the server, it has permissions of 600. This makes it impossible for me to view the file (JPEG) in the web browser, as permission is denied. I have scoured the internet and even broken my server installation and reinstalled it trying to figure this out (which has been fun, nonetheless!). I know it is unwise to set 777 permissions on public accessible files, but even that will not solve the problem. The only thing that works is if I chmod 777 thefile.jpg after it has been transferred, which is not a working solution. I tried changing the owner of my site files to www-data per this post, but that also does not work. My user is mike, and it still does not work whether the owner of the files is mike or root. Would somebody point me in the right direction? Thanks! And, of course, let me know if I can clarify anything.

  • Setting the default permissions for files uploaded via FTP to a directory

    Disclaimer: I'm just a web designer/coder, and server admin stuff is my weakest point of them all. So be easy on me (and very specific). I'm using a simple CMS (Unify) on a site, where part of the functionality is that the client can upload files to a specified directory (using FTP). The permissions for the upload directory are set to 755. But when files are uploaded through the interface, they are uploaded with permissions set to 640 (instead of 644), so site visitors cannot acces the files. When I emailed the CMS's support about this, they told me that it was a server setting, and I need to make sure that files uploaded through FTP are set to 644. Makes perfect sense, but I have no idea how to do this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This site is a shared site hosted by Network Solutions (Unix), so my access options are limited. I can edit .htaccess files, and php.ini, but that's about all I have access to. It appears I can't even log on via shell. ETA: 11/11/2010 Thanks all. I was able to work around this problem by setting up the CMS's settings in a different way. I'd be interested in following up on Nick O'Niel's suggestions, because I think he's on the right track, but unfortunately I can't access the necessary files on this particular server. So, anyway, I'm leaving this open, since the original questions isn't exactly resolved. Unfortunately, I probably can't put a correct answer to the test, since the shared server in question has nearly all of its config files tightly locked down.

    I have an issue that I;m going round in circles with, I hope you can help. The Set up: Server 1 (CIFS Client) - CentOS 6.3 AD integrated uing Samba/Winbind & idmap_ad Server 2 (CIFS Server) - CentOS 6.3 AD integrated uing Samba/Winbind & idmap_ad All users (apart from root) are AD authenticated and this, including groups, etc works happily. What's working: I have created a share on Server 2: [share2] path = /srv/samba/share2 writeable = yes Permissions on the share: drwxrwx---. 2 root domain users 4096 Oct 12 09:21 share2 I can log into a Windows machine as user5 (member of domain users) and everything works as it should, for example: If I create a file it shows the correct permissions and attributes on both the MS and the Linux sides. Where I Fall Down: I mount the share on Server 1 using: # mount //server2/share2 /mnt/share2/ -o username=cifsmount,password=blah,domain=blah Or using fstab: //server2/share2 /mnt/share2 cifs credentials=/blah/.creds 0 0 This mounts fine, but.... If I log su, or log onto server 1 as a normal user (say user5) and try to create a file I get: #touch test touch test touch: cannot touch `test': Permission denied Then if I check the folder the file was created but as the cifsmount user: -rw-r--r--. 1 cifsmount domain users 0 Oct 12 09:21 test I can rename, delete, move or copy stuff around as user5, I just can't create anything, what am I doing wrong? I'm guessing it's something to do with the mount action as when I log onto server2 as user5 and access the folder locally it all works as it should. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

But when I log on from a different machine (like this: sudo mount -t cifs //server/share mountpoint/ -o username=remoteuser ), I get "Permission denied" both when trying to create directories and files, oddly though, it does create files (not directories!) despite these messages! How can I get this working?

    I have a Linode VPS server that I have recently setup and am migrating to from Mediatemple, where I have a VPS managed by Plesk. I dislike the Plesk interface and the mess it makes of a lot of things, but appreciated its ability to allow multiple people access to different domains on a server. I have most everything setup the way I would like it, but am having issues with permissions for my domain directories. I am running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and Apache 2 as my web server. I have domains successfully located in /var/www/vhosts/domainname.com but have to modify files as root in order to add/change files for the domains. I would like to setup access with the following criteria: Each domain can have a user assigned to it (and allow for the same user to manage multiple domains - could even create symlinks in their home folder to their domains) Certain users will have shell access and may be chrooted to the domain directory they control FTP needs to be setup and able to correctly access the domains so that content editors for each domain can upload/download without permissions issues I am relatively new to linux sysadmin and have searched for a good guide to help solve these issues but haven't been able to find one yet.   • Samba4/Ubuntu Shares Incorrectly Available to All Users

    I've got my Ubuntu server working with Samba4 and got it set up as the Primary domain controller on my network with AD and all that goodness. However, I'm trying to get my Samba configuration to work with the users and groups I've defined with the Active Directory tools from Windows. For instance, I've got a share X which I want users A and B (as part of the 'management' group, known as LLGrpManager in my setup) to see, but no body else. However, after making changes to the configuration, restarting Samba, I test by connecting to the share with my Mac over Samba as user 'C' which isn't part of the management group, and I can, incorrectly, see the X share. I've tried alsorts of combinations of specifying the group with no luck at all. I've got a feeling that my global config might be too lenient or something to do with file permissions but being a bit green, I'm without clue.   • Delegating account unlock rights in AD

    I'm trying to delegate the rights to unlock user accounts in our Active Directory domain. This should be easy, and I've done it before... but every time the user tries to unlock an account (using the LockoutStatus tool), he gets denied with the error "You do not have the necessary permissions to unlock this account." Here's what I've done: I created a domain local group and added the members who should have the rights. This was created over a week ago, so the users have logged out and in again. In ADUC, I've used the Delegate Rights wizard on the OU which contains our user accounts to grant permissions to Read lockoutTime and Writer lockoutTime to the group, per MSKB 279723 I have double-checked the permissions were applied correctly in ADSIEdit. I have forced replication between all domain controllers to ensure the permission changes were copied over. The user testing it has logged out and in again to ensure he has any changes applied to his account. ...That covers all the bases I can think of. Anything else I could be missing?

  • Moving from single-site to multi-site Active Directory has broken OWA proxying

    Originally we had the following setup: OfficeExch01 has Mailbox Role and CAS Role OfficeExch01 is in the office. CoLoExch01 had just CAS Role. CoLoExch01 is internet facing and in a CoLo. Three AD domain controllers in the default site. Users could go to https://webmail.whatever.com/owa, get proxyed to OfficeExch01 and everything was great. Well, we recently setup a separate AD site and put a domain controller and the ColoExch01 server in the new site. I also made that remote DC be a Global Catalog. Now, users get the following error: Outlook Web Access is not available. If the problem continues, contact technical support for your organization and tell them the following: There is no Microsoft Exchange Client Access server that has the necessary configuration in the Active Directory site where the mailbox is stored. I also see event 41 errors in the logs: The Client Access server "https://webmail.xxxxxxx.com/owa" attempted to proxy Outlook Web Access traffic for mailbox "/o=XXXXX/ou=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)/cn=Recipients/cn=xxxxxxk". This failed because no Client Access server with an Outlook Web Access virtual directory configured for Kerberos authentication could be found in the Active Directory site of the mailbox. The simplest way to configure an Outlook Web Access virtual directory for Kerberos authentication is to set it to use Integrated Windows authentication by using the Set-OwaVirtualDirectory cmdlet in the Exchange Management Shell, or by using the Exchange Management Console. If you already have a Client Access server deployed in the target Active Directory site with an Outlook Web Access virtual directory configured for Kerberos authentication, the proxying Client Access server may not be finding that target Client Access server because it does not have an internalUrl parameter configured. You can configure the internalUrl parameter for the Outlook Web Access virtual directory on the Client Access server in the target Active Directory site by using the Set-OwaVirtualDirectory cmdlet. Looking this up I see a lot talk about ExternalURL and InternalURL settings. However, everything worked great until we made the new AD site. I also made sure the internal CAS server's /owa virtual directory is set to use Integrated Authentication. Is there something I need to do to allow Exchange to see that I've made these AD changes?
