• Mono ASP.NET COM Reference

  I am sure this is a very dumb question to be asking for such a platform as Mono, but I am really stuck with .NET on one of my only remaining projects on MS platforms and would like to move away from it. The only problem is that the web site is dependent on a COM library that is simply a socket wrapper enforcing a messaging protocol. I could reverse the code (I actually made a 10k line attempt) but there's nothing better than the original if it works. Is there any way to reference a tlb export on Mono? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

• Python: Indexing list for element in nested list

  I know what I'm looking for. I want python to tell me which list it's in. Here's some pseudocode: item = "a" nested_list = [["a", "b"], ["c", "d"]] list.index(item) #obviously this doesn't work here I would want python to return 0 (because "a" is an element in the first sub-list in the bigger list). I don't care which sub-element it is. I don't care if there are duplicates, e.g., ["a", "b", "a"] should return the same thing as the above example. Sorry if this is a dumb question. I'm new to programming.

• Selecting fields in SQL Select statements (Dumbest SQL Question)

  Hello all, Here's a dumb question which I can't find an answer to: I have a table which contains 20 fields, a few of which are date/time. I am interested in pulling all the fields. I would like to pull the datetime fields using the to_char function but don't want to individually list out all the other fields. Is there an easy way to do this? I tried select *, tochar(dtfield) as dt2 and select tochar(dtfield) as dt2, * and both give errors. Thanks for all your help! JC

I want to make a phonebook and I need to add an email to an already existing name. That name has already a phone number attached. I have this first code: phonebook = {} phonebook ['ana'] = '12345' phonebook ['maria']= '23456' , '[email protected]' def add_contact(): name = raw_input ("Please enter a name:") number = raw_input ("Please enter a number:") phonebook[name] = number Then I wanted to add an email to the name "ana" for example: ana: 12345, [email protected]. I created this code but instead of addend a new value (the email), it just changes the old one, removing the number: def add_email(): name = raw_input("Please enter a name:") email = raw_input("Please enter an email:") phonebook[name] = email I tried .append() too but it didn't work. Can you help me? And I'm sorry if the code is bad, I'm just trying to learn and I'm a bit noob yet :)

• Garbage collecting at ColdFusion CFC

  Hello. I have a CFC as singletone object in Application scope. One of the methods is used for massive data processing and periodically causes the "Java heap space" errors. EDIT All variables inside the method are VAR-scoped, so they should not be kept in the object scope when invokation ended. It can be a bit dumb question for Java people, but I'd like to know how Java garbage collector cleans up the CFC methods memory: only when whole request ends, or maybe right after each method/function invokation? Second option is interesting because it can allow me to split my large method into the few, as one of the possible optimizations.

• Why does asp.net mvc form submits itself on button clicks when javascript function error?

  hi guys, i'm new to the asp.net mvc, and while working on this, i used very basic asp.net mvc stuff like beginform, etc. i used a lot of jquery codes this round for client side validation, ajax data retrieval, and other gui works. and i used a combinations of html inputs buttons, etc and the asp.net mvc type of controls. what i noticed is that whenever i click on a button control, which sometimes are tied to either jquery oclick events, when there's a javascript error, the page will just go on and submit. why is this happening and what am i missing here? my bad for the dumb questions.. thanks

• Potential for SQL injection here?

  This may be a really dumb question but I figure why not... I am using RIA Services with Entity Framework as the back end. I have some places in my app where I accept user input and directly ask RIA Services (and in turn EF and in turn my database) questions using their data. Do any of these layers help prevent security issues or should I scrub my data myself? For example, whenever a new user registers with the app, I call this method: [Query] public IEnumerable<EmailVerificationResult> VerifyUserWithEmailToken(string token) { using (UserService userService = new UserService()) { // token came straight from the user, am I in trouble here passing it directly into // my DomainService, should I verify the data here (or in UserService)? • CSS Padding Issue w/ submit button

  This is a dumb problem but I can't seem to set the padding on a submit button properly. No matter what I input for padding, the width and height of the button never changes. Here is the css: .green_submit { color: #fff; background-color: #94c909; border-right: 1px solid #6d9307; border-bottom: 1px solid #6d9307; border-left: none; border-top: none; padding: 25px; } And the HTML: <input type="submit" class='green_submit' value="Validate" /> Any obvious problems here?   I want to be able to create a greyscale image with no alpha from a png in the app bundle. I've tried creating a bitmap context thus: CGColorSpaceRef colorSpace = CGColorSpaceCreateDeviceGray(); CGContextRef ctx =CGBitmapContextCreate(nil, rectangleOfOverlap.size.width, rectangleOfOverlap.size.height, 8, rectangleOfOverlap.size.width , colorSpace, kCGImageAlphaNone); UIGraphicsGetImageFromCurrentImageContext returns zero and the resulting image is not created. • Can a CLSID be different for the same program installed on two different machines?

  I am using comtypes to generate wrappers for a certain com library. I am having certain issues with a few things, that are not being generated properly. I can get around this by doing the missing work, manually. However can i depend on the fact that CLSID's will not change? Lets say: I install a program with the com library Foo 1.0, now i install the exact same version of that program on another PC, will the CLSID's of the interfaces change? This might be a terribly dumb question.

So the form elements have the class="required" attribute. input type="text" name="last_name" class="required"/ Now if i want to apply some css properties to the input fields of this form - how do I do that. I do not want to declare a general css for all input elements - I have declared the css as follows: input.form { color: #000; background: #fff; border: 2px solid #E1E1E1; font-size: 16pt; width:150px; } And I want to use it this way input class="form" type="text" name="last_name" class="required"/ But this wont work as there are two class attributes here.   I have this code in jQuery.. $(document).ready(function(){ var fieldCounter = 0; ... I have a jQuery function that increments this value. This works, but I can't access this value on the page from a non-jQuery function? The reverse is also true, if I scope it in JavaScript e.g. <script type="text/javascript"> var fieldCounter = 0; I can access it from javascript but jQuery can't view it? I'm probably doing something really dumb?

  Hi! I'm playing around with Java's Reflection. I have an abstract class Base with a constructor. abstract class Base { public Base( String foo ) { // do some magic } } I have some further classes extending Base. They don't contain much logic. I want to instantiate them with Base's constructor, without having to write some proxy contructors in those derived classes. And of course, I want to instantiate those derived classes with Reflection. Say: Class cls = SomeDerivedClass.class; Constructor constr; constr = cls.getConstructor( new Class[] { String.class } ); // will return null Class clsBase = Base.class; constr = clsBase.getConstructor( new Class[] { String.class } ); // ok Base obj = (Base) constr.newInstance( new Object[] { "foo" } ); // will throw InstantiationException because it belongs to an abstract class Any ideas, how I can instantiate a derived class with Base's constructor? Or must I declare those dumb proxy constructors?

• Servlet Session - switch from URL Rewriting to Cookie

  Situation: I have a "dumb" Javascript frontend that can contact some kind of SSO middleware (MW). The MW can obtain sessions by issuing requests that contain authentication credentials (username, password). I.e. the session will be created for a certain user. My frontend needs to "restart" the session to gain the user's permissions to the target system. For that i need a valid session cookie. The target system is not under my control (could be a more or less public WFS, WMS, etc.), so i cannot add any SSO mechanism to it. Question: Is it possible to "steal" a Session forging a request which URL contains a valid session ID in the jsessionid parameter? Goal : Issue such a request to a Servlet and make it respond with a Set-Cookie header that contains the same id. That way the frontend joins the session and may do whatever the user, which was used to create the session, is able to do.

These are my tables. student table: SID (primary) student_name advisor (foreign key to faculty.facultyID) requested_advisor (foreign key to faculty.facultyID) faculty table: facultyID (primary key) advisor_name I want to query a table that shows everything in the student table, but I want advisor and requested_advisor to show up as names, not the ID numbers. so like it displays like this on the webpage: Student Name: Jane Smith SID: 860123456 Current Advisor: John Smith Requested advisor: James Smith not like this Student Name: Jane Smith SID: 860123456 Current Advisor: 1 Requested advisor: 2 SELECT student.student_name, SID, student_email, faculty.advisor_name FROM student INNER JOIN faculty ON student.advisor = faculty.facultyID; this comes out close, but I don't know how to get the requested_advisor to show up as a name.

• When is a scala partial function not a partial function?

  While creating a map of String to partial functions I ran into unexpected behavior. When I create a partial function as a map element it works fine. When I allocate to a val it invokes instead. Trying to invoke the check generates an error. Is this expected? Am I doing something dumb? Comment out the check() to see the invocation.   hi everyone, i'm extremely rookie on this security field, so please forgive if my questions are dumb. i am asked to convert and migrate couple "Lotus Forms" forms to our software that is written in java. One thing in forms that bother me is digital signatures. These forms can be signed by digital signatures, probably generated by "Silanis Approve-it". as i have said before, i dont have much knowledge about this technology. and strangely couldnt find any tutorial or example of integrating digital signature and java. So what are the possibilities here ? how my code read a digital signature, sign a document with this signature? There should be an API or something that is provided by vendors right :)

• Tinting iPhone application screen red

  I'm trying to place a red tint on all the screens of my iPhone application. I've experimented on a bitmap and found I get the effect I want by compositing a dark red color onto the screen image using Multiply (kCGBlendModeMultiply). So the question is how to efficiently do this in real time on the iPhone? One dumb way might be to grab a bitmap of the current screen, composite into the bitmap and then write the composited bitmap back to the screen. This seems like it would almost certainly be too slow. In addition, I need some way of knowing when part of the screen has been redrawn so I can update the tinting. I can almost get the effect I want by putting a red, translucent, fullscreen UIView above everything. That tints everything red within further intervention on my part, but the effect is much "muddier" than results from the composite. So do any wizards out there know of some mechanism I can use to automatically composite the red over the app in similar fashion to what the translucent red UIView does?

• Freebase Query with "JOINS"

  ... Yeah, yeah, I know traditional joins don't exist. I actually like the freebase query methodology in theory, just having a little trouble getting it to actually work for me : ) Anyone have a dumb-simple example of getting Freebase data via MQL that pulls from two different "tables"? In particular, I'm trying to get automotive data... so for example, pulling fields from both /automotive/model_year and /automotive/trim_year. I've read the documentation (for hours actually). There's a distinct possibility that I'm looking right at such an example somewhere and just not seeing it because my OLTP brain just doesn't comprehend what it's seeing. * Note * ... that the two "types" I'm working with above are siblings, not parent/child. Does freebase even allow joining data between sibling nodes... I see examples of queries pulling from parent/child, but not from siblings I don't think (or I've overlooked them).

• How does one go about understanding GNU source code?

  I'm really sorry if this sounds kinda dumb. I just finished reading K&R and I worked on some of the exercises. This summer, for my project, I'm thinking of re-implementing a linux utility to expand my understanding of C further so I downloaded the source for GNU tar and sed as they both seem interesting. However, I'm having trouble understanding where it starts, where's the main implementation, where all the weird macros came from, etc. I have a lot of time so that's not really an issue. Am I supposed to familiarize myself with the GNU toolchain (ie. make, binutils, ..) first in order to understand the programs? Or maybe I should start with something a bit smaller (if there's such a thing) ? I have little bit of experience with Java, C++ and python if that matters. Thanks!

  Hi, I use no-editor in joomla with SEF urls enabled. With no SEF enabled its easy to know the URL by just getting the ID of the article something like : Article 1 would be : http://www.abc.com/j15/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1&Itemid=1 Now if I have SEF switched on I would get urls that look like: http://www.abc.com/j15/the-content.html Is there a way inside joomla where I can findout what the SEF URL for a particular page is? Currently I add these articles to a menu, then from the front-end I get the SEF URL and then use it. I know the process is a little dumb but I want to find-out if there is a better way inside joomla where you can get the SEF URL(using no-editor). Thanks! :)

  hello. I am WCF pure newbie. I know this question could look like dumb. I used to write ajax with the Webservice. but on this project. I tried to use WCF for ajax. after I build the project. I try to call wcf ajax. and I can receive return successfully. But 10 or more minute after. I cann't receive return, and the ajax call the error function. and the fiddler return nothing. if I rebuild the project without any source modifying, I can receive ajax return successfully. such a weird situation. is their anybody who experience this? and know why ? • AJAX with Ruby on Rails?

  This is probably a really dumb question with a simple answer but... I am working on a project where I need to use AJAX to send/receive information. I am using Ruby on Rails (which I am pretty new to), but rather than using the helper methods or the built in functionality in the 'defaults' Javascript file, I need to do this manually in my own Javascript. I believe that ultimately I will want to send a request with a JSON object, then have the controller return another JSON object containing the requested information. The problem is that I cannot seem to find the syntax for sending something to a specific controller method, with parameters, directly from Javascript - everything I Google ends up being tutorials for using the Rails AJAX helper methods.

• Interface and base class mix, the right way to implement this

  I have some user controls which I want to specify properties and methods for. They inherit from a base class, because they all have properties such as "Foo" and "Bar", and the reason I used a base class is so that I dont have to manually implement all of these properties in each derived class. However, I want to have a method that is only in the derived classes, not in the base class, as the base class doesn't know how to "do" the method, so I am thinking of using an interface for this. If i put it in the base class, I have to define some body to return a value (which would be invalid), and always make sure that the overriding method is not calling the base. method Is the right way to go about this to use both the base class and an interface to expose the method? It seems very round-about, but every way i think about doing it seems wrong... Let me know if the question is not clear, it's probably a dumb question but I want to do this right.
