    with "file upload" HTML like this: <input name="input_name" type="file" size="40" /> ...there is no way for users to directly enter text into input area for security reasons, correct? file selection window pops up instead. In Watin automation project, we are wanting to bypass the file selection window and place filename directly in text entry area - but we are not finding a way to do this. How can this be accomplished? ...or perhaps it cannot be done?

  • As a tooling/automation developer, can I be making better use of OOP?

    My time as a developer (~8 yrs) has been spent creating tooling/automation of one sort or another. The tools I develop usually interface with one or more API's. These API's could be win32, WMI, VMWare, a help-desk application, LDAP, you get the picture. The apps I develop could be just to pull back data and store/report. It could be to provision groups of VM's to create live like mock environments, update a trouble ticket etc. I've been developing in .Net and I'm currently reading into design patterns and trying to think about how I can improve my skills to make better use of and increase my understanding of OOP. For example, I've never used an interface of my own making in anger (which is probably not a good thing), because I honestly cannot identify where using one would benefit later on when modifying my code. My classes are usually very specific and I don't create similar classes with similar properties/methods which could use a common interface (like perhaps a car dealership or shop application might). I generally use an n-tier approach to my apps, having a presentation layer, a business logic/manager layer which interfaces with layer(s) that make calls to the API's I'm working with. My business entities are always just method-less container objects, which I populate with data and pass back and forth between my API interfacing layer using static methods to proxy/validate between the front and the back end. My code by nature of my work, has few common components, at least from what I can see. So I'm struggling to see how I can better make use of OOP design and perhaps reusable patterns. Am I right to be concerned that I could be being smarter about how I work, or is what I'm doing now right for my line of work? Or, am I missing something fundamental in OOP? EDIT: Here is some basic code to show how my mgr and api facing layers work.     I need to execute these statements in all tables for all columns. alter table table_name charset=utf8; alter table table_name alter column column_name charset=utf8; Is it possible to automate this in any way inside MySQL? I would prefer to avoid mysqldump Update: Richard Bronosky showed me the way :-) The query I needed to execute in every table: alter table DBname.DBfield CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_general_ci; Crazy query to generate all other queries: SELECT distinct CONCAT( 'alter table ', TABLE_SCHEMA, '.', TABLE_NAME, ' CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_general_ci;' ) FROM information_schema.COLUMNS WHERE TABLE_SCHEMA = 'DBname'; I only wanted to execute it in one database. It was taking too long to execute all in one pass. It turned out that it was generating one query per field per table. And only one query per table was necessary (distinct to the rescue). Getting the output on a file was how I realized it.   • Why can't “knife data bag from file” find existing json file on chef server?

    Summary: I'm running into a problem with "knife data bag from file", where knife doesn't recognize the .json data bag file pulled down from a remote git repo. Background: I'm currently trying to transition from chef-solo use to chef server while using the cookbooks, data bags and other chef info from our remote git repo. I've currently pulled down a copy of our git repo and set the cookbook path and data bag path in knife.rb. I also loaded the cookbooks, made adjustments, etc. Details: When trying to load our .json data bags by doing "knife data bag add from file FOLDER FILE" it looks like it worked until I do "knife data bag list" and it comes up blank. So I decided to try adding the edit option at the end to see what's being loaded, if it is. This is the error I get: knife data bag from file local_settings test.json -e nano ERROR: Could not find or open file 'test.json' in current directory or in 'data_bags/local_settings/test.json' The data bag file does exist, in the proper location, in a tested, working json file. I've also sometimes gotten an error saying "could not open data bag "local_settings". I would obviously like to keep the data bag path within the appropriate git repo folder to be able to keep track of changes in a more centralized location (our git repo, as opposed to the chef server). Any solutions, advice or pointers in the right direction are appreciated.

    RipIt & Handbrake do a really good job of ripping and compressing. For normal "single main feature" DVDs I have a good workflow, and for the most part handbrake does a good job of figuring out what the main title is. The process for ripping a DVD that has multiple episodes of something kinda sucks. Has anyone made any progress on automating (or at least simplifying) the process of getting show-s01e01.avi from a DVD?

  • Automate uploading of videos to YouTube

    Here's the problem: I would like to keep lots of home made videos. Of course, they are subject to being lost, or somebody could steal the the computer, or water or fire could destroy them. Secondly, I have to plug in my hard drive every time I want to watch something, which I find slow and cumbersome. I was thinking that perhaps I could upload the videos to Youtube with the privacy set to invite only and then delete the video from the hard drive automatically. Could this be done?

    Having a lot of different customers and a lot of different areas to work with makes it trivial to have your mail folders in order. Everytime I get a new Project / Customer I want to add a certain Folder Structure in my "Customer" / "Project" sub directory. It might look like this: Customer_name/ Bugs Documents Important Support/ Done And as it is today, I have to manually add these manually, which is harsh when you have a lot of it going on and each sub directory under the customer_name directory needs to have "display all items" since it's important to me to see all Items in Bugs / Support / Important. Makes my life easier. So, Is it possible to Automize the process somehow? Macro? Folder Templates? What are my options?

    Our company uses pic database and wIntegrate 4.02 to interface with. How would I go about automating the .wis files for importing and exporting through wIntegrate? Is there some type of macro, software solution or built in routine I can use? At the moment I manually login to pic using wIntegrate and goto run - querybuilder and select the desired .wis script for importing and exporting data and select ok to run. This is not a solution, it needs to be automated. Anyone? Is there some type of point a click freeware recording software? I hate to do a hack job like that but I'm running out of ideas and no one seems to have worked with this software before...

  • How can I most efficiently batch resize images on a Mac?

    I've been batch-resizing images through Preview (OS X) through the menu bar, but I want a simpler workflow, since I do this a dozen times a day. What I want: 1. Select a group of image files in finder 2. Hit a button or two (menu item or keyboard shortcut) to do the following: a. Scale all the pictures to 600 pixels wide b. Save as JPG files at 75% quality What I also want: - All of the above, plus step a(1): Crop images to 200 pixel height I can do all that manually, to a batch of files, through Preview. I can do it one at a time with some keyboard shortcuts in Photoshop or Pixelmator. Automator (using Preview) can scale to 600 pixels on the longest dimension, but it doesn't let me specify width. (It can scale specifically to width before cropping height.) It can change to JPG, but it can't specify image quality. And I can assign a keyboard shortcut to the whole process. Is that my best option on a Mac? Can I accomplish this more efficiently through another app like Quicksilver?

  • Load website and fill form from the command line

    Using the Linux command line (Bash shell) I like to load a specific website in my browser (normally Firefox, but other one would be ok as well as long it runs under Linux) and fill a pre-defined form with some data. Actually, this should run from a Makefile. Most of the form data is static and will be stored as variables in the Makefile, just some fields are to be filled manually before manually sending the form. I know how to load the website in question from the command line using: firefox <URL> But there seems no possibility to fill the form automatically with variables given on the command line. Is there a plugin, executable or JavaScript which allows me to do this? Any suggestions and hints are welcome. I don't mind coding some JavaScript.

What options do I have for automating the OS installation on these systems?   • Completely automated DVD insert-rip-compress-eject workflow

    (Partially inspired by this question.) Background: I have a PC hidden away behind an HD LCD in custom-built entertainment center. The only visible part of the PC is an external DVD drive, mounted above the Wii. The PC happens to have Windows XP on it; Hackintoshing and Linux might be possible, but I've had issues with drivers for the sound card before. Let's just assume that OS X and Linux are a no-go unless they provide a truly awesome and simple solution for this particular problem. Goal: I would like to have a completely automated workflow for ripping DVDs. Something like this: Push the eject button on the DVD drive, insert the DVD. PC recognizes that this is a video DVD (as opposed to data). PC rips DVD to hard drive. PC finishes ripping, and ejects the DVD tray. PC compresses DVD image into some format that an Xbox 360 can read. PC copies finished compressed video file to a particular folder, so that it can be read into a WMP11 library and seamlessly played by the Xbox 360. PC cleans up all temporary files. Done. The impetus to have this be completely automated is that I’ll never need to switch the TV to the PC’s input and fiddle with the wireless keyboard. That’s just needless user intervention. The UI doesn’t have to be pretty. Nor do I care about speed. And I can probably bridge several of the gaps with some creative Perl use. But it seems likely that many (or all) of the parts should already exist. Any thoughts?

  • Automatically save/download e-mail body to disk

    Is there a program that will allow me to connect to my mail server (IMAP) and automatically save certain new e-mails to disk? Multiple times a day I receive automated e-mail updates about pending jobs from a system that processes some information for us. The data in these e-mails is written as plain-text within the body of the message. I would like to download the newest message, parse it, and display it on my desktop. The last two parts I can manage ok - it's just the automatic downloading that is posing a challenge. I don't use Outlook (I do use Thunderbird), but would prefer not to have the client open to make this happen. I'm currently running Win7.

They power a VMware infrastructure environment (VMware Lab Manager) and what I'd like to do is detect when one is on battery (say has been for x amount of time or has x percentage left) and run a script on this event.     Is there any software similar to automator but more advanced? In our situation we have two files with the same name, one is a MOV the other XML. We want to use some of the metadata within the XML to rename both files. Then we want to re-arrange the contents of the XML file so that it is compatible with another piece of software we use (I think this is called mapping) Essentially some software that takes a bunch of variable from existing file and peforms file actions to them. I imagine this would be an easy task using applescript, but im wondering if there is a OSX application similar to Automator that can do the above? Questions are: Is there software that can do the above? Could Automator achieve this? What is the name of this process? If no such software exists, what would be the best kind of script to use? eg. Make an Apple Script, python script etc.

  • Scheduled automatic FTP website backup solution?

    I was wondering if there was a way to schedule automatic FTP site backup with any free or open-source software? Clients like FileZilla do not have an automatic backup (ftp download) option. Is there a way to schedule this with any program, by using the windows task scheduler? Or maybe we need to use a macro program like imacro in combination with FireFTP to do the job? Do you think using macro is a feasible and secure(reliable) solution?
