    I found a classic M-Series keyboard and I want to use it. However, it does not have the "Windows" key (a.k.a "Super"), only the Shift, Control and Alt modifiers. My keyboard shortcuts are cluttered as-is, since that I try to control both Emacs and the windows manager (Gnome) only from the keyboard. I rely on the "Super" key to identify the windows manager shortcuts. What it the best practice for keyboard-centric work without the "Super" key?

    Emacs has elaborate protection against simultaneous editing by two different users. If there a way to have that same facility for protecting against simultaneous editing by the same user? With lots of windows and workspaces open, it's easy to reopen a file that you already have open somewhere else. But because it does not detect a lock conflict when you open the file, you will only learn about the collision when you save.

  • Emacs - Disable Some Minibuffer Messages

    In Emacs, there are some cases where I would like to prevent messages from appearing in the minibuffer, mainly pertaining to "Beginning/End of buffer" and "Text is read-only". Is there any way I can prevent these messages from appearing in the minibuffer? Also, is there some significant reason I might not want to disable these? At face value, I can just as easily look at the row number and buffer write status on the modeline.

    Emacs documentation states that you can use query-replace on filesets to perform find/replace on multiple files. This lets you perform certain operations, such as visiting, query-replace, and shell commands on all the files at once. I've opened my particular fileset (i.e. via fileset-open) and attempted query/replace using both: M-% and M-x query-replace but can't get it to work on anything but the file (buffer) I'm currently in.

    Hello; I am an Emacs lover probably because I love the key binding and I am able to do things very quickly. I also use Eclipse IDE for my Java/Android/Python/ development because it is free, most of my peers use it, and it works. I find myself switching between emacs and Eclipse and the workflow just isn't great. What I would like to do is setup the key bindings in Eclipse so that they are like Emacs. Can someone suggest the best Eclipse plugin I could use for this. Or can anyone talk about how they've used Eclipse to be more Emacs like. Thanks in advance

  • Pipe less to emacs

    When viewing piped output to Less, sometimes I'd like to be able to view it in Emacs in order to get syntax highlighting and use emacs commands for searching, marking, copying, etc. I see that Less has a v command that can be used to open the currently viewed file in $EDITOR. Unfortunately this doesn't work when viewing piped input. Also, I don't know how to get Emacs to display stdin as a read-only document. So, is it possible to set up Less with something like v but that pumps the current buffer into Emacs as a read-only file? Thanks.

    On a daily basis I: use multiple workstations running either Linux, Windows, or MacOS X edit files on additional Linux hosts that are not any of the workstations mentioned above The only common element here is that the internet connects all of these hosts: workstations and servers. I can keep all of the config files in sync on my workstations too and can run an X server on all of them. What's the right way of running emacs? I don't want to sacrifice any features. In my ideal world I can type 'emacs foo.txt' on a remote host and some magic happens via X forwarding to display the file in my workstation's existing emacs session. Non-solutions tramp: when I'm manipulating a remote host an editor is just part of my workflow. I need a terminal open so I can run other commands quickly. tramp is all wrong for this. ncurses emacs: sucks, I want the graphical kind If you don't have a positive answer to my question, please don't just guess.     Hello, I'm using emacs23 with tramp to modify python scripts on a remote host. I found that when I start the python shell within emacs it starts up python on the remote host. My problem is that when I then try to call python-send-buffer via C-c C-c it comes up with the error Traceback (most recent call last): File "", line 1, in ? ImportError: No module named emacs Traceback (most recent call last): File "", line 1, in ? NameError: name 'emacs' is not defined Now, I must admit that I don't really know what's going on here. Is there a way for me to configure emacs so that I can evaluate the buffer on the remote host? Many thanks.

    Hi all, I would like to "send" code snippets to a iPython interpreter in Emacs 23.2 (Linux). I have two related questions about this: Q1: I have learned that Emacs provides ('shell-command-on-region') to run selected regions in a shell. I have set setq shell-file-name to my iPython path, but when I run M-| after selecting a region, Emacs prompts me the following: Shell command on region: and if I then type RET, I get the iPython man page on the *Shell Command Output* buffer, without the region being executed. Why? Q2: Assuming that I have already started an iPython shell in some other buffer in Emacs, is there a way of selecting a region in another buffer and "sending" this region to the already-started iPython shell?   • Emacs on Windows for C++ development configuration?

    Has anyone set up cygwin and some emacs to work well under a 64-bit Windows 7? I tried downloading cygwin recently, and by default not even dired works reliably, there are odd shell prompt characters, I get a lot of warnings, in one case C-c was read as C-g and caused various errors. (Neither xemacs nor emacs worked for me, where by "work" I mean that dired and shell work, and without warnings). I just want the usual emacs development tools: gdb-mode, shell-mode, compiling, tag-search to work as normal. I was hoping someone who has done this recently with cygwin could share whatever relevant shell files, emacs files, environment variables, and so on to make this all work. Should all these things just work out of the box?

  • Howto disable the emacs site-start files permanently?

    When solving this problem I figured out that I need to disable the site-wise init files in order to get my emacs + CEDET running (everything works nicely when starting emacs using emacs --no-site-file but is broken without the additional argument). I'd like to disable the site-wise init files permanently but as I'm using several different approaches/methods when launching emacs (launcher/panel/terminal) I don't think aliasing it in my .zshrc won't work. I require a method to permanently disable all site-start files. Is there any easy way to achieve this? Thanks!
