  • Teaming/Spanning Switch Ports

    - by KTech
I like to team NICs on my servers. Since most workstations are giga-bit anymore I want to provide my servers a bit more bandwidth. I've read various things that say I am/am not supposed to bond the ports on the switch. I see benefit in doing it as I'm not sure how the switch ARP table handles the same MAC address on multiple ports. Suggestions on the "ideal" way to do it? If it matters, I have mix (various locations) of Dell and HP, web managed, Layer 2 switches. Servers are mostly Dell with Broadcom NICs.

  • Redirect all ports to my server in a simple way

    - by Dorian
I have a server with SSH access (on port 22 and 443). My ISP block everything except ports 80 and 443. I there a simple way to make everything go to my server (via SSH) then return the response via the same SSH connection, but in a way I can use all the ports in my client. Like : Me ? SSH connection ? My server ? request ? Server ? My server ? Me It's like a VPN but I don't have any port available for a VPN (443 is already taken by SSH).

  • how to troubleshoot using rsyslog to output to a mysql database

    - by ChrisNZ
Using FreeBSD 8.0 32 bit. I have installed rsyslogd 5.5.5 with ommysql. (installed ports /usr/ports/sysutils/rsyslog55 and /usr/ports/sysutils/rsyslog55-mysql) My rsyslog.conf file looks like: $ModLoad imudp $ModLoad imtcp $ModLoad ommysql $ModLoad immark.so $ModLoad imuxsock.so $ModLoad imklog.so $OptimizeForUniprocessor on $AllowedSender UDP, 10.0.0.0/8 $UDPServerAddress 0.0.0.0 $UDPServerRun 514 $UDPServerTimeRequery 2 # +SG560 *.* :ommysql:127.0.0.1,Syslog,sysloguser,mypassword My command line flags for rsyslogd are: -c5 -4 Checking the code with -c5 -N1 returns no errors. I have confirmed that rsyslogd is working by changing the last line to say: *.* /var/log/snapgear.log which results in messages appearing in the snapgear.log file. So it is probably something to do with my MySQL setup If I do: mysql -u sysloguser -p Syslog Enter password: Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g. Your MySQL connection id is 56 Server version: 5.0.86 FreeBSD port: mysql-server-5.0.86 mysql> select * from SystemEvents; Empty set (0.00 sec) mysql> :-( I have confirmed that sysloguser has full privileges for the Syslog database. If I run rsyslogd on the console in debug mode: /usr/local/sbin/rsyslogd -f /usr/local/etc/rsyslog.conf -c5 -n -d I can see this sequence of events each time a message is received: 9244.376687256:28359280: main Q: entry added, size now log 1, phys 1 entries 9244.376705694:28359280: main Q: EnqueueMsg advised worker start 9244.376726647:28359280: Listening on UDP syslogd socket 4 (IPv4/port 514). 9244.376728602:28359280: --------imUDP calling select, active file descriptors (max 4): 4 9244.376890075:283593c0: wti 0x28306e80: worker awoke from idle processing 9244.376892031:283593c0: we deleted 0 objects and enqueued 0 objects 9244.376893986:283593c0: delete batch from store, new sizes: log 1, phys 1 9244.376895942:283593c0: msgConsumer processes msg 0/1 9244.376897898:283593c0: msg parser: flags 70, from '~NOTRESOLVED~', msg 'Jun 29 17:32:24 SG560 kernel: (20000629T1732244' 9244.376900132:283593c0: parse using parser list 0x283080e8 (the default list). 9244.376902088:283593c0: dropped LF at very end of message (DropTrailingLF is set) 9244.376904044:283593c0: Parser 'rsyslog.rfc5424' returned -2160 9244.376905999:283593c0: Message will now be parsed by the legacy syslog parser (one size fits all... ;)). 9244.376907955:283593c0: Parser 'rsyslog.rfc3164' returned 0 9244.376909910:283593c0: testing filter, f_pmask 255 9244.376911866:283593c0: Called action, logging to ommysql 9244.376918012:283593c0: actionTryResume: action state: susp, next retry (if applicable): 1277869250 [now 1277869244] 9244.376919967:283593c0: action call returned -2123 9244.376921923:283593c0: tryDoAction: unexpected error code -2123, finalizing 9244.376926113:283593c0: actionTryResume: action state: susp, next retry (if applicable): 1277869250 [now 1277869244] 9244.376928069:283593c0: ruleset: get iRet 0 from rule.ProcessMsg() 9244.376930024:283593c0: ruleset.ProcessMsg() returns 0 9244.376931980:283593c0: regular consumer finished, iret=0, szlog 0 sz phys 1 9244.376933936:283593c0: XXX: enqueueing data element 0 of 1 9244.376935891:283593c0: we deleted 1 objects and enqueued 0 objects 9244.376938126:283593c0: delete batch from store, new sizes: log 0, phys 0 9244.376940082:283593c0: regular consumer finished, iret=4, szlog 0 sz phys 0 9244.376942037:283593c0: main Q:Reg/w0: worker IDLE, waiting for work. .... • em1: watchdog timeout -- resetting virtualbox

    - by lightmanhk
everyone. I try to configure network adapter of my freebsd on virtualbox machine. At first setting up, I got it right. However, after a couple of reboots, my VM gives me a error message: says "em1:Watchdog timeout -- resetting" I tried to google it, and there is no solution that works for me. The following is my network adapter of my VM: Apapter1: NAT Adapter2: Host-only Adapter vboxnet0 On my Virtualbox setting: Host-only networks: Adapter: IPv4 address: 192.168.56.10 IPv4 network mask: 255.255.255.0 On my FreeBSD VM /etc/rc.conf ifconfig_em0="DHCP" ifconfig_em1="inet 192.168.56.11 netmask 255.255.255.0" Moreover, strange thing is that, for example, if timeout error message show at ttyv0 , when I log in at different ttyv[1-9], the error message will not be shown. but in ttyv0, it still gives me the message. And, in term of functionality of em1, it does work. I have no clue about this problem. Hoping any one can give me a solution or suggestion. That will be great! Thanks a lot. • OpenVPN - client-to-client traffic working in one direction but not the other

    - by user42055
    I have the following VPN configuration: +------------+ +------------+ +------------+ | outpost |----------------| kino |----------------| guchuko | +------------+ +------------+ +------------+ OS: FreeBSD 6.2 OS: Gentoo 2.6.32 OS: Gentoo 2.6.33.3 Keyname: client3 Keyname: server Keyname: client1 eth0: 10.0.1.254 eth0: 203.x.x.x eth0: 192.168.0.6 tun0: 192.168.150.18 tun0: 192.168.150.1 tun0: 192.168.150.10 P-t-P: 192.166.150.17 P-t-P: 192.168.150.2 P-t-P: 192.168.150.9 Kino is the server and has client-to-client enabled. All three machines have ip forwarding enabled, by this on the gentoo boxes: net.ipv4.conf.all.forwarding = 1 And this on the FreeBSD box: net.inet.ip.forwarding: 1 In the server's "ccd" directory is the following files: client1: iroute 192.168.0.0 255.255.255.0 client3: iroute 10.0.1.0 255.255.255.0 The server config has these routes configured: push "route 192.168.0.0 255.255.255.0" push "route 10.0.1.0 255.255.255.0" route 192.168.0.0 255.255.255.0 route 10.0.1.0 255.255.255.0 Kino's routing table looks like this: 192.168.150.0 192.168.150.2 255.255.255.0 UG 0 0 0 tun0 10.0.1.0 192.168.150.2 255.255.255.0 UG 0 0 0 tun0 192.168.0.0 192.168.150.2 255.255.255.0 UG 0 0 0 tun0 192.168.150.2 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 UH 0 0 0 tun0 Outpost's like this: 192.168.150 192.168.150.17 UGS 0 17 tun0 192.168.0 192.168.150.17 UGS 0 2 tun0 192.168.150.17 192.168.150.18 UH 3 0 tun0 And Guchuko's like this: 192.168.150.0 192.168.150.9 255.255.255.0 UG 0 0 0 tun0 10.0.1.0 192.168.150.9 255.255.255.0 UG 0 0 0 tun0 192.168.150.9 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 UH 0 0 0 tun0 Now, the tests. Outpost has gateway_enable="YES" in its rc.conf which correctly sets net.inet.ip.forwarding to 1 as mentioned earlier. As far as I know, that's all that's required to make a FreeBSD box forward packets between interfaces. Is there something else I could be forgetting ?

  • NAT, iptables and problematic ports

    - by Rajie
I am building a small office network with virtual machines. My schema is this: Computer A: gateway, ip 1.1.1.1, iptables used for NAT [eth0=public internet dhcp, dhcp; eth1=gateway] Computer B: client, ip 1.1.1.2, using gateway from Computer A. NAT is working, and Computer B can access the internet using the A's gateway. I redirected some incoming ports from A to B (for instance, if A receives a request to port 80, it goes automatically to Computer B's Apache). The thing is that I do not really understand how to open/close ports for Computer B from Computer A. I know how to close a port: iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -j DROP And it will refuse all incoming (not output) connections to port 80. However, this works for main interface eth0. I tried to, for instance, drop ingoing and outgoing connections for Computer B, port 80: iptables -A FORWARD -i eth1 -o eth0 -p tcp --dport 80 -j DROP iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -o eth1 -p tcp --dport 80 -j DROP But it does not work. And I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. Any clue?

  • fail2ban block ports rules iptable

    - by J Spen
I just installed Ubuntu Server 14.04 and don't have much experience with IPtables. I am trying to get a basic setup going where I only accept SSH connections on port 22 and 2222. I actually have that working with no problem using fail2ban ssh. Then I wanted to block all other ports except 423 and 4242 but either method of DROPing all connections that are not listed seems not to work and it blocks me out of everything. Below is the setup that works: -P INPUT ACCEPT -P FORWARD ACCEPT -P OUTPUT ACCEPT -N fail2ban-ssh -A INPUT -p tcp -m multiport --dports 22,2222 -j fail2ban-ssh -A fail2ban-ssh -j RETURN I tried to change it either to: -P INPUT DROP -P FORWARD ACCEPT -P OUTPUT ACCEPT -N fail2ban-ssh -A INPUT -p tcp -m multiport --dports 22,2222 -j fail2ban-ssh -A fail2ban-ssh -j RETURN or: -P INPUT ACCEPT -P FORWARD ACCEPT -P OUTPUT ACCEPT -N fail2ban-ssh -A INPUT -p tcp -m multiport --dports 22,2222 -j fail2ban-ssh -A INPUT -j DROP -A fail2ban-ssh -j RETURN I have noticed that the rules for fail2ban-ssh are automatically added to my iptables on boot because if I save them with iptables-persistant they are entered twice. How do I go about blocking everything accept those 2 ports using fail2ban? Is it a bad fail2ban configuration or do I need to add the fail2ban-ssh -j Return somewhere else in my code.

  • Installing and running two postgresql versions on different ports (or two instances of same server)

    - by Andrius
I have postgresql 9.1 installed on my machine (Ubuntu). I need another postgresql server that would run next to the old one. Exact version does not matter, but I'm thinking of using 9.2 version. How could I properly install and run another postgresql version without screwing old one (like upgrading). So those versions would run independently on different ports. Old one on 5432 and new one on 5433 for example. The reason I need this is for two OpenERP versions databases. If I run two OpenERP servers (with different versions) on single postgresql port, it crashes because new OpenERP version detects old versions database and tries to run it, but it crashes because it uses another schemes. P.S or maybe I could just run same postgresql server on two ports? Update So far I tried this: /usr/lib/postgresql/9.1/bin/pg_ctl initdb -D main2 It created new cluster. I changed port to 5433 in new clusters directory postgresql.conf file. Then ran this: /usr/lib/postgresql/9.1/bin/pg_ctl -D main2 -l logfile start I got response server starting. But when I tried to enter new cluster's template database with: psql template1 -p 5433 I got this error: psql: could not connect to server: No such file or directory Is the server running locally and accepting connections on Unix domain socket "/var/run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5433"? Also now when I try to stop server with: /usr/lib/postgresql/9.1/bin/pg_ctl -D main2 -l logfile start I get this error: pg_ctl: PID file "main2/postmaster.pid" does not exist Is server running? So I don't understand if server is running and what I'm missing here? Update Found what was wrong. Stupid me. I didn't notice that when I changed port in .conf file, that line was commented already. So actually I didn't change anything first time, but thought I did and it used default 5432 port.

  • How to limit reverse SSH tunelling ports?

    - by funktku
We have a public server which accepts SSH connections from multiple clients behind firewalls. Each of these clients create a Reverse SSH tunnel by using the ssh -R command from their web servers at port 80 to our public server. The destination port(at the client side) of the Reverse SSH Tunnel is 80 and the source port(at public server side) depends on the user. We are planning on maintaining a map of port addresses for each user. For example, client A would tunnel their web server at port 80 to our port 8000; client B from 80 to 8001; client C from 80 to 8002. Client A: ssh -R 8000:internal.webserver:80 clienta@publicserver Client B: ssh -R 8001:internal.webserver:80 clientb@publicserver Client C: ssh -R 8002:internal.webserver:80 clientc@publicserver Basically, what we are trying to do is bind each user with a port and not allow them to tunnel to any other ports. If we were using the forward tunneling feature of SSH with ssh -L, we could permit which port to be tunneled by using the permitopen=host:port configuration. However, there is no equivalent for reverse SSH tunnel. Is there a way of restricting reverse tunneling ports per user?

  • Header set Access-Control-Allow-Origin not working with mod_rewrite + mod_jk

    - by tharant
My first question on here on SF so please forgive me if I manage to bork the post. :) Anyways, I'm using mod_rewrite on one of my machines with a simple rule that redirects to a webapp on another machine. I'm also setting the header 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' on both machines. The problem is that when I hit the rewrite rule, I loose the 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header setting. Here's an example of the Apache config for the first machine: NameVirtualHost 10.0.0.2:80 <VirtualHost 10.0.0.2:80> DocumentRoot /var/www/host.example.com ServerName host.example.com JkMount /webapp/* jkworker Header set Access-Control-Allow-Origin "*" RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^/otherhost http://otherhost.example.com/webapp [R,L] </VirtualHost> And here's an example of the Apache config for the second: NameVirtualHost 10.0.1.2:80 <VirtualHost 10.0.1.2:80> DocumentRoot /var/www/otherhost.example.com ServerName otherhost.example.com JkMount /webapp/* jkworker Header set Access-Control-Allow-Origin "*" </VirtualHost> When I hit host.example.com we see that the header is set: $ curl -i http://host.example.com/ HTTP/1.1 302 Moved Temporarily Server: Apache/2.2.11 (FreeBSD) mod_ssl/2.2.11 OpenSSL/0.9.7e-p1 DAV/2 mod_jk/1.2.26 Content-Length: 0 Access-Control-Allow-Origin: * Content-Type: text/html;charset=ISO-8859-1 And when I hit otherhost.example.com we see that it too is setting the header: $ curl -i http://otherhost.example.com HTTP/1.1 200 OK Server: Apache/2.0.46 (Red Hat) Location: http://otherhost.example.com/index.htm Content-Length: 0 Access-Control-Allow-Origin: * Content-Type: text/html;charset=UTF-8 But when I try to hit the rewrite rule at host.example.com/otherhost we get no love: $ curl -i http://host.example.com/otherhost/ HTTP/1.1 302 Found Server: Apache/2.2.11 (FreeBSD) mod_ssl/2.2.11 OpenSSL/0.9.7e-p1 DAV/2 mod_jk/1.2.26 Location: http://otherhost.example.com/ Content-Length: 0 Content-Type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1 Can anybody point out what I'm doing wrong here? Could mod_jk be part of the problem?

  • VMWare ESX, storage over 2TB

    - by Phliplip
Hi, First of, i'm a webdeveloper and my server experience lies in setting up FreeBSD servers for webserver. I'm working on a project for at photographer, and i'm hired to develop a new online photo ordering system - where user of course can view their photos :) They have a massive need of storage, thus we have bought a HP G6 and 8x1TB SATA HDD. Our plan is to install VMWare ESX 4.0, running multiple virtual machines; FreeBSD 8 for webserver and some windows servers. Allready done that. Then mount one big storage to the BSD, and share it through Samba to the WinServers. The raid is set up with an array of 2x 1TB to handle the VMs. And the rest is setup as 3 2x1TB to handle the photo-data. Thus 2.73TB for photo-data (the raids are 1+0). Now if we add a datastore in the ESX and add the 3 LUNs we can get a datastore of 2.74TB. But i don't se how i can add this datastore direct to the VM. Only the BSD VM needs access to this. Only way is to create a VirtualDisk, with a max of 2TB (8MB blocksize). This is because the datastore where we save the virtualdisk has a maximum filesize of 2TB. Then add it as a harddisk to the BSD VM. In the 'Add Harddisk' pane for the VM, i see an option for Raw Disk Management. I think this is to access the datastore or the raid directly. Only problem is that its greyed out! Can i access the datastorage directly from the BSD? Without creating and adding virtualdisk.

  • Why is my IMAP port not showing as open ( yet it works? )

Ive recently setup Postfix and Dovecot IMAP on a Debian Lenny box. Sending to this domain works fine and reading the email via IMAP works fine too. I'm curious though as to why when running nmap, port 10143 is not shown as open. nmap -sS -O 127.0.0.1 Starting Nmap 4.62 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2011-11-26 21:30 GMT Interesting ports on localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1): Not shown: 1711 closed ports PORT STATE SERVICE 22/tcp open ssh 25/tcp open smtp 80/tcp open http 3306/tcp open mysql Am I missing something with NMAP? Thanks Leo

  • Link aggregation with freebsd8 and a cicso 3550, what am i doing wrong?

    - by Flamewires
Hey, I am trying to setup Link Aggrigation with LACP (well, anything that provides increased bandwidth and failover using my setup will work). I'm running FreeBSD 8.0 on 3 machines. M1 is running 2 10/100 ethernetcards setup for link aggrigation using lagg. for reference: ifconfig em0 up ifconfig tx0 up ifconfig create lagg0 ifconfig lagg0 laggproto lacp laggport tx0 laggport em0 192.168.1.16 netmask 255.255.255.0 I plugged them into ports 1 and 2 of a Cicso 3550. then ran: configure terminal interface range Fa0/1 - 2 switchport mode access switchport access vlan 1 channel-group 1 mode active (everythings in vlan 1) Now Im able to connect the other computers to other ports on the switch and failover works great, i can unplug cables in the middle of a transfer and the traffic gets rerouted. However, im not noticing any speed increase. My test setup: load balancing: i tried dst and src on the switch, neither seemed to give me a speed increase. I am SCPing 2 500 meg files from the lagg computer to other computers (one each) which are also running 10/100 full duplex cards. I get transfer speeds of about 11.2-11.4 Mbps to a single host, and about half that (5.9-6.2) Mbps when transferring to both at the same time. From what I understood with destination load balancing the router was suppose to balance traffic headed for 1 computer over 1 port and traffic headed for another over a diff(in this case) the other port. With destination-MAC address forwarding, when packets are forwarded to an EtherChannel, the packets are distributed across the ports in the channel based on the destination host MAC address of the incoming packet. Therefore, packets to the same destination are forwarded over the same port, and packets to a different destination are sent on a different port in the channel. For the 3550 series switch, when source-MAC address forwarding is used, load distribution based on the source and destination IP address is also enabled for routed IP traffic. All routed IP traffic chooses a port based on the source and destination IP address. Packets between two IP hosts always use the same port in the channel, and traffic between any other pair of hosts can use a different port in the channel. (Link) What am i doing wrong/what would i need to do to see a speed increase beyond what i could do with just a single card?

  • need some help figuring out clamav & monit monitoring error...unixsocket...

    - by Ronedog
I need a bit of help figuring something out. First off, I'm not very well versed with FreeBSD servers, etc. but with some direction hopefully I can get this fixed. I'm using FreeBSD and installed Monit so I could monitor some of the processes that run tomcat, apache, mysql, sendmail, clamav. So far, I'm only successful in getting apache & mysql to be monitored. I'm getting this error for clamav in the log file for /var/log/monit.log 'clamavd' failed, cannot open a connection to UNIX[/usr/local/etc/rc.d/clamav-clamd] My config file for clamav in /etc/monitrc is: #################################################################### # CLAMAV Virus Checks #################################################################### check process clamavd with pidfile /var/run/clamav/clamd.pid group virus start program = "/usr/local/etc/rc.d/clamav-clamd start" stop program = "/usr/local/etc/rc.d/clamav-clamd stop" if failed unixsocket /usr/local/etc/rc.d/clamav-clamd then restart if 5 restarts within 5 cycles then timeout Honestly, I really don't know much of what's going on here. My host who helped me get the box set up basically installed clamav, but doesn't offer this kind of detail in supporting me, so I'm left to figure this stuff out on my own as I own the box, but they provide the isp service. Is there anyone who can help me troubleshoot this? Thanks for your help in advance.

  • Can't remove zfs log device from pool

    - by netmano
I run a FreeBSD 9.0 server with ZFS pool version 28 and ZFS version 5. I had two pools with a log on ssd's two partitions. These pools was created on FreeBSD 8.2 with ZFS pool version 15, and ZFS version 4. After I upgraded to the new zfs version, I tried to remove the SSD log device from both pools both command was successful (no error message). One of the pools was the log removed, but the other still there, I down the server removed the ssd physically, and hoped it will be forgot by the zpool. The zpool became degraded as ssd was missing. I tied to remove again. No error message, but the log device entry still there. After it, to became the pool online again, I created a file on the root UFS partition and replaced the missing to device to this file. It was successful, the pool again online. However I can't remove the log device from the pool. Where can I have to look for error messages? (in dmesg there is nothing about it, also the zfs remove doesn't have any error message, it's seem like it was successful.

  • Can't set up Usermin correctly to allow users to login outside of local network, what am I missing?

    - by thecraic
I'm fairly new at creating a server, but the biggest problem I am currently having at the moment is getting Usermin set up to be accessible from outside the LAN. I talked to other people that use it and was told that all I need to do is type the url:20000 to access the login screen, but that doesn't work. I have also tried the ip:20000 and that doesn't lead to anything. Instead I get the error message: Error - Bad Request This web server is running in SSL mode. Try the URL https://hostname:10000/ instead. (where hostname is my server's hostname) I know it must be a configuration issue, but I have checked all my settings and as far as I can tell I don't have the ports blocked anywhere. I have the correct ports forwarded on my router and my server firewall doesn't have the port block either. Is there anything I am missing? Any help would be appreciated and I will add more information upon request. Thank You.

  • Safe to use high port numbers? (re: obscuring web services)

    - by sofakng
I have a small home network and I'm trying to balance the need for security versus convenience. The safest way to secure internal web servers is to only connect using VPNs but this seems overkill to protect a DVRs remote web interface (for example). As a compromise, would it be better to use very large ports numbers? (eg. five digits up to 65531) I've read that port scanners typically only scan the first 10,000 ports so using very high port numbers is a bit more secure. Is this true? Are there better ways to protect web servers? (ie. web guis for applications)

  • Multiple, Simultaneous Factories and Protocols in Twisted: Same Service, Different Ports

    - by RichardCroasher
Greetings, Forum. I'm working on a program in Python that uses Twisted to manage networking. The basis of this program is a TCP service that is to listen for connections on multiple ports. However, instead of using one Twisted factory to handle a protocol object for each port, I am trying to use a separate factory for each port. The reason for this is to force a separation among the groups of clients connecting to the different ports. Unfortunately, it appears that this architecture isn't quite working: clients that connect to one port appear to be available among all the factories (e.g., the protocol class used by each factory includes a 'self.factory.clients.append (self)' statement...instead of adding a given client to just the factory for a particular port, the client is added to all factories), and whenever I shutdown service on one port the listeners on all ports also stop. I've been working with Twisted for a short while, and fear I simply don't fully understand how its factory classes are managed. My question is: is it simply not possible to have multiple, simultaneous instances of the same factory and same protocol in use across different ports (without these instances stepping on each other's toes)?

  • OpenVPN - client-to-client traffic working in one direction but not the other

    - by Pawz
    I have the following VPN configuration: +------------+ +------------+ +------------+ | outpost |----------------| kino |----------------| guchuko | +------------+ +------------+ +------------+ OS: FreeBSD 6.2 OS: Gentoo 2.6.32 OS: Gentoo 2.6.33.3 Keyname: client3 Keyname: server Keyname: client1 eth0: 10.0.1.254 eth0: 203.x.x.x eth0: 192.168.0.6 tun0: 192.168.150.18 tun0: 192.168.150.1 tun0: 192.168.150.10 P-t-P: 192.166.150.17 P-t-P: 192.168.150.2 P-t-P: 192.168.150.9 Kino is the server and has client-to-client enabled. I am using "fragment 1400" and "mssfix" on all three machines. An mtu-test on both connections is successful. All three machines have ip forwarding enabled, by this on the gentoo boxes: net.ipv4.conf.all.forwarding = 1 And this on the FreeBSD box: net.inet.ip.forwarding: 1 In the server's "ccd" directory is the following files: client1: iroute 192.168.0.0 255.255.255.0 client3: iroute 10.0.1.0 255.255.255.0 The server config has these routes configured: push "route 192.168.0.0 255.255.255.0" push "route 10.0.1.0 255.255.255.0" route 192.168.0.0 255.255.255.0 route 10.0.1.0 255.255.255.0 Kino's routing table looks like this: 192.168.150.0 192.168.150.2 255.255.255.0 UG 0 0 0 tun0 10.0.1.0 192.168.150.2 255.255.255.0 UG 0 0 0 tun0 192.168.0.0 192.168.150.2 255.255.255.0 UG 0 0 0 tun0 192.168.150.2 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 UH 0 0 0 tun0 Outpost's like this: 192.168.150 192.168.150.17 UGS 0 17 tun0 192.168.0 192.168.150.17 UGS 0 2 tun0 192.168.150.17 192.168.150.18 UH 3 0 tun0 And Guchuko's like this: 192.168.150.0 192.168.150.9 255.255.255.0 UG 0 0 0 tun0 10.0.1.0 192.168.150.9 255.255.255.0 UG 0 0 0 tun0 192.168.150.9 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 UH 0 0 0 tun0 Now, the tests. Pings from Guchuko to Outpost's LAN IP work OK, as does the reverse - pings from Outpost to Guchuko's LAN IP. However... Pings from Outpost, to a machine on Guchuko's LAN work fine: .(( root@outpost )). (( 06:39 PM )) :: ~ :: # ping 192.168.0.3 PING 192.168.0.3 (192.168.0.3): 56 data bytes 64 bytes from 192.168.0.3: icmp_seq=0 ttl=63 time=462.641 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.0.3: icmp_seq=1 ttl=63 time=557.909 ms But a ping from Guchuko, to a machine on Outpost's LAN does not: .(( root@guchuko )). (( 06:43 PM )) :: ~ :: # ping 10.0.1.253 PING 10.0.1.253 (10.0.1.253) 56(84) bytes of data. --- 10.0.1.253 ping statistics --- 3 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 2000ms Guchuko's tcpdump of tun0 shows: 18:46:27.716931 IP 192.168.150.10 > 10.0.1.253: ICMP echo request, id 63009, seq 1, length 64 18:46:28.716715 IP 192.168.150.10 > 10.0.1.253: ICMP echo request, id 63009, seq 2, length 64 18:46:29.716714 IP 192.168.150.10 > 10.0.1.253: ICMP echo request, id 63009, seq 3, length 64 Outpost's tcpdump on tun0 shows: 18:44:00.333341 IP 192.168.150.10 > 10.0.1.253: ICMP echo request, id 63009, seq 3, length 64 18:44:01.334073 IP 192.168.150.10 > 10.0.1.253: ICMP echo request, id 63009, seq 4, length 64 18:44:02.331849 IP 192.168.150.10 > 10.0.1.253: ICMP echo request, id 63009, seq 5, length 64 So Outpost is receiving the ICMP request destined for the machine on it's subnet, but appears not be forwarding it. Outpost has gateway_enable="YES" in its rc.conf which correctly sets net.inet.ip.forwarding to 1 as mentioned earlier. As far as I know, that's all that's required to make a FreeBSD box forward packets between interfaces. Is there something else I could be forgetting ? FWIW, pinging 10.0.1.253 from Kino has the same result - the traffic does not get forwarded. UPDATE: I've found that I can only ping certain IP's on Guchuko's LAN from Outpost. From Outpost I can ping 192.168.0.3 and 192.168.0.2, but 192.168.99 and 192.168.0.4 are unreachable. The same tcpdump behavior can be seen. I think this means the problem can't be due to ipforwarding or routing, because Outpost can reach SOME hosts on Guchuko's LAN but not others and likewise, Guchuko can reach two hosts on Outpost's LAN, but not others. This baffles me.
