  • Just re-installed Ubuntu 14.04, unstable wireless connection, Lenovo ThinkPad X200

    - by Mark Lawtie
I re-installed Ubuntu 14.04 as I was having problems with unstable wireless connection... Following re-installation I am having the same problem: connection randomly dropping out, then reconnecting... all my other devices are running well when connected I am a bit of a computer novice so any help would be greatly appreciated... I am running Lenovo ThinkPad X200 laptop... Thanks! mark@mark-ThinkPad-X200:~$ lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Memory Controller Hub (rev 07) 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07) 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07) 00:03.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset MEI Controller (rev 07) 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82567LM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 03) 00:1a.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #4 (rev 03) 00:1a.1 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #5 (rev 03) 00:1a.2 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #6 (rev 03) 00:1a.7 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #2 (rev 03) 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03) 00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) PCI Express Port 1 (rev 03) 00:1c.1 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) PCI Express Port 2 (rev 03) 00:1c.3 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) PCI Express Port 4 (rev 03) 00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 03) 00:1d.1 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #2 (rev 03) 00:1d.2 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #3 (rev 03) 00:1d.7 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #1 (rev 03) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 Mobile PCI Bridge (rev 93) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation ICH9M-E LPC Interface Controller (rev 03) 00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 82801IBM/IEM (ICH9M/ICH9M-E) 4 port SATA Controller [AHCI mode] (rev 03) 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) SMBus Controller (rev 03) 03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 5100 AGN [Shiloh] Network Connection mark@mark-ThinkPad-X200:~$ mark@mark-ThinkPad-X200:~$ lsusb Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub Bus 008 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 007 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 004 Device 026: ID 0a5c:2145 Broadcom Corp. • Intel Corporation Ethernet Connection does not start properly

    - by Oscar Alejos
I'm experiencing some problems when trying to connect my PC to the router through a switch. When the PC is directly connected to the router, everything works fine, Ubuntu (14.04) starts normally, and the Internet connection runs inmediately. The Ethernet controller is the Intel Corporation Ethernet Connection, as lspci returns: $ lspci | grep Eth 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation Ethernet Connection I217-V (rev 04) However, when I try to connect through the switch what I get is the following. dmesg returns: $ dmesg | grep eth [ 1.035585] e1000e 0000:00:19.0 eth0: registered PHC clock [ 1.035587] e1000e 0000:00:19.0 eth0: (PCI Express:2.5GT/s:Width x1) 00:22:4d:a7:be:5d [ 1.035589] e1000e 0000:00:19.0 eth0: Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Connection [ 1.035625] e1000e 0000:00:19.0 eth0: MAC: 11, PHY: 12, PBA No: FFFFFF-0FF [ 1.357838] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready [ 2.165413] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready [ 2.165574] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready [ 2.641287] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready [ 16.715086] e1000e: eth0 NIC Link is Up 100 Mbps Full Duplex, Flow Control: Rx/Tx [ 16.715090] e1000e 0000:00:19.0 eth0: 10/100 speed: disabling TSO [ 16.715117] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): eth0: link becomes ready It looks like eth0 is properly working. Actually, nm-tool returns: $ nm-tool - Device: eth0 [Conexión cableada] ------------------------------------------- Type: Wired Driver: e1000e State: connected Default: yes HW Address: 00:22:4D:A7:BE:5D Capabilities: Carrier Detect: yes Speed: 100 Mb/s Wired Properties Carrier: on IPv4 Settings: Address: 192.168.1.30 Prefix: 24 (255.255.255.0) Gateway: 192.168.1.1 DNS: 80.58.61.250 DNS: 80.58.61.254 DNS: 192.168.1.1 However, ping returns: $ ping 192.168.1.1 PING 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1) 56(84) bytes of data. It seems to be an issue related to the integrated LAN adaptor and the Ethernet controller, since my laptop connects without any problem. My desktop board is an Intel DB85FL. I'd be grateful if anyone could give some ideas on how to solve this issue. Thank you in advance.

  • Are Intel compilers really better than Microsoft ones?

    - by Rocket Surgeon
Years ago I was surprised when discovered that Intel sells Studio compatible compilers. I tried it in particular for C/C++ as well as fantastic diagnostic tools. But the code was simply not that computationally intensive to notice the difference. The only impression was: did Intel really did it for me just now, Wow, amazing tools with nanoseconds resolution, unbeleivable. But the trial ended and team never seriously considered a purchase. From your experience, if license cost does not matter, which vendor is a winner ? It is not broad or vague question or attemt to spark a holy war. This sort of question about 2 very visible tools. Nobody likes when tools have any mysteries or surprises. And choices between best and best are always the pain. I also understand the "grass greener" argument. I want to hear all "what ifs" stories. What if Intel just locally optimizes it for the chip stepping of the month, and not every hardware target will actually work as well as Microsoft compiled ? What if AMD hardware is the target and everything will slow down for no reason ? Or on other hand, what if Intel's hardware has so many unnoticable opportunities, that Microsoft compiler writers are too slow to adopt and never implement in the compiler ? What if both are the same exactly, actually a single codebase just wrapped into 2 different boxes and licensed to both vendors by some 3rd party shop? And so on. But someone knows some answers.

  • Intel Assembly Programming

class MyString{ char buf[100]; int len; boolean append(MyString str){ int k; if(this.len + str.len>100){ for(k=0; k<str.len; k++){ this.buf[this.len] = str.buf[k]; this.len ++; } return false; } return true; } } Does the above translate to: start: push ebp ; save calling ebp mov ebp, esp ; setup new ebp push esi ; push ebx ; mov esi, [ebp + 8] ; esi = 'this' mov ebx, [ebp + 14] ; ebx = str mov ecx, 0 ; k=0 mov edx, [esi + 200] ; edx = this.len append: cmp edx + [ebx + 200], 100 jle ret_true ; if (this.len + str.len)<= 100 then ret_true cmp ecx, edx jge ret_false ; if k >= str.len then ret_false mov [esi + edx], [ebx + 2*ecx] ; this.buf[this.len] = str.buf[k] inc edx ; this.len++ aux: inc ecx ; k++ jmp append ret_true: pop ebx ; restore ebx pop esi ; restore esi pop ebp ; restore ebp ret true ret_false: pop ebx ; restore ebx pop esi ; restore esi pop ebp ; restore ebp ret false My greatest difficulty here is figuring out what to push onto the stack and the math for pointers. NOTE: I'm not allowed to use global variables and i must assume 32-bit ints, 16-bit chars and 8-bit booleans.

  • Building small Ubuntu server - What hardware is recommended?

    - by 10robinho
There are many of us who need to build small Ubuntu server. Problem is that in some countries it is hard to find and quite expensive to buy server motherboards and processors. And when one is building small server with limited budget, buying some Xenons is not really an option. So, are there any general recommendations for hardware (I think that motherboards are the main issue) that is stable and fast under Linux? I read that Intel should be the best choice for cpu + mbo combo. So, I was looking around for some Intel motherboards + i7 Ivy Bridge (like Intel DZ77BH-55K with Z77 chipset and Intel i7 3770K) but I've read that they have some issues with kernel, booting and USB ports. That is why I ask community if you have any experience with this. Maybe Intel is not the best choice here? Maybe ASUS or Gigabyte or _other company_ are more stable with Linux? I hope that this Q&As can help people in building stable Ubuntu server.

  • Wrong download of Ubuntu 13.10 desktop: AMD instead of wanted Intel [duplicate]

    - by L. Williams
This question already has an answer here: Difference between the i386 download and the amd64? 5 answers My PCs are Intel CPUs e.g. Core2 Quad, 64 bit, no AMD in network, but from ubuntu.com/download site, selecting 13.10 Desktop for 64 bit, it repeatedly only offers *AMD.ISO version, which of course fails to install on my Intel (or Atom) based PCs. Wuzzup, and what URL has a download for the Intel CPU systems? Rem: this is for Saucy 13.10 Desktop 64 OS ISO. TIA.

  • cannot boot ubuntu 13.10 with my usb, Can i change the kernal on my laptop to run it?

    - by Carlos Dunick
Currently i am running 12.04 and looking for an upgrade to 13.10 I first tried a bootable 64bit usb and failed. With the message saying "Kernal requires an x86-64 CPU but only detected an I686 CPU Unable to boot please use a kernal appropriate for your CPU" then tried 32bit and same message came up. Is this due to my laptop simply being to slow? or can/should i change the kernal somehow? • Ubuntu hangs at the '_' prompt for 15' when booting. Do I need another driver for my Intel G31/G33 integrated graphics?

    - by Doctoa
I have an ASROCK which uses Intel G31 graphics. Ubuntu says my graphics chipset is G33. Should I look for another driver or are they from the same family? I am also having problems booting and that purple screen stuck so for this I asked this question. I have partially fixed the purple screen stuck by enabling (uncommenting) this line in grub: GRUB_TERMINAL=console But Ubuntu still hangs at start up for about 15 minutes with a black screen and only the '_' prompt. Here is a link for an overview of my ASROCK G31M-S

I have a Sony VAIO netbook with Intel GMA-500 Poulsbo Graphics and I'm trying to boot the latest Ubuntu-12.04 Beta-2 using a bootable USB. According to this Ubuntu-Wiki, support for Intel GMA-500 Poulsbo graphics is promising in Precise-Beta2 and should work out of the box. Of course the wiki talks about a problem when booting from USB and states that restarting X using: sudo service lightdm restart will bring a functional graphical desktop, but nothing happens for me! Any help is highly appreciated.

  • Intel Xeon 5600 (Westmere-EP) and 7500 (Nehalem-EX)

    - by jchang
Intel Xeon 5600 (Westmere-EP) and 7500 (Nehalem-EX) Performance Intel launched the Xeon 5600 series (Westmere-EP, 32nm) six-core processors on 16 March 2010 without any TPC benchmark results. In the performance world, no results almost always mean bad or not good results. Yet there is every reason to believe that the Xeon 5600 series with six-cores (X models only) will performance exactly as expected for a 50% increase in the number of cores at the same frequency (as the 5500) with no system level...(read more)

  • Optimizing AES modes on Solaris for Intel Westmere

    - by danx
Optimizing AES modes on Solaris for Intel Westmere Review AES is a strong method of symmetric (secret-key) encryption. It is a U.S. FIPS-approved cryptographic algorithm (FIPS 197) that operates on 16-byte blocks. AES has been available since 2001 and is widely used. However, AES by itself has a weakness. AES encryption isn't usually used by itself because identical blocks of plaintext are always encrypted into identical blocks of ciphertext. This encryption can be easily attacked with "dictionaries" of common blocks of text and allows one to more-easily discern the content of the unknown cryptotext. This mode of encryption is called "Electronic Code Book" (ECB), because one in theory can keep a "code book" of all known cryptotext and plaintext results to cipher and decipher AES. In practice, a complete "code book" is not practical, even in electronic form, but large dictionaries of common plaintext blocks is still possible. Here's a diagram of encrypting input data using AES ECB mode: Block 1 Block 2 PlainTextInput PlainTextInput | | | | \/ \/ AESKey-->(AES Encryption) AESKey-->(AES Encryption) | | | | \/ \/ CipherTextOutput CipherTextOutput Block 1 Block 2 What's the solution to the same cleartext input producing the same ciphertext output? The solution is to further process the encrypted or decrypted text in such a way that the same text produces different output. This usually involves an Initialization Vector (IV) and XORing the decrypted or encrypted text. As an example, I'll illustrate CBC mode encryption: Block 1 Block 2 PlainTextInput PlainTextInput | | | | \/ \/ IV >----->(XOR) +------------->(XOR) +---> . . . . | | | | | | | | \/ | \/ | AESKey-->(AES Encryption) | AESKey-->(AES Encryption) | | | | | | | | | \/ | \/ | CipherTextOutput ------+ CipherTextOutput -------+ Block 1 Block 2 The steps for CBC encryption are: Start with a 16-byte Initialization Vector (IV), choosen randomly. XOR the IV with the first block of input plaintext Encrypt the result with AES using a user-provided key. The result is the first 16-bytes of output cryptotext. Use the cryptotext (instead of the IV) of the previous block to XOR with the next input block of plaintext Another mode besides CBC is Counter Mode (CTR). As with CBC mode, it also starts with a 16-byte IV. However, for subsequent blocks, the IV is just incremented by one. Also, the IV ix XORed with the AES encryption result (not the plain text input). Here's an illustration: Block 1 Block 2 PlainTextInput PlainTextInput | | | | \/ \/ AESKey-->(AES Encryption) AESKey-->(AES Encryption) | | | | \/ \/ IV >----->(XOR) IV + 1 >---->(XOR) IV + 2 ---> . . . . | | | | \/ \/ CipherTextOutput CipherTextOutput Block 1 Block 2 Optimization Which of these modes can be parallelized? ECB encryption/decryption can be parallelized because it does more than plain AES encryption and decryption, as mentioned above. CBC encryption can't be parallelized because it depends on the output of the previous block. However, CBC decryption can be parallelized because all the encrypted blocks are known at the beginning. CTR encryption and decryption can be parallelized because the input to each block is known--it's just the IV incremented by one for each subsequent block. So, in summary, for ECB, CBC, and CTR modes, encryption and decryption can be parallelized with the exception of CBC encryption. How do we parallelize encryption? By interleaving. Usually when reading and writing data there are pipeline "stalls" (idle processor cycles) that result from waiting for memory to be loaded or stored to or from CPU registers. Since the software is written to encrypt/decrypt the next data block where pipeline stalls usually occurs, we can avoid stalls and crypt with fewer cycles. This software processes 4 blocks at a time, which ensures virtually no waiting ("stalling") for reading or writing data in memory. Other Optimizations Besides interleaving, other optimizations performed are Loading the entire key schedule into the 128-bit %xmm registers. This is done once for per 4-block of data (since 4 blocks of data is processed, when present). The following is loaded: the entire "key schedule" (user input key preprocessed for encryption and decryption). This takes 11, 13, or 15 registers, for AES-128, AES-192, and AES-256, respectively The input data is loaded into another %xmm register The same register contains the output result after encrypting/decrypting Using SSSE 4 instructions (AESNI). Besides the aesenc, aesenclast, aesdec, aesdeclast, aeskeygenassist, and aesimc AESNI instructions, Intel has several other instructions that operate on the 128-bit %xmm registers. Some common instructions for encryption are: pxor exclusive or (very useful), movdqu load/store a %xmm register from/to memory, pshufb shuffle bytes for byte swapping, pclmulqdq carry-less multiply for GCM mode Combining AES encryption/decryption with CBC or CTR modes processing. Instead of loading input data twice (once for AES encryption/decryption, and again for modes (CTR or CBC, for example) processing, the input data is loaded once as both AES and modes operations occur at in the same function Performance Everyone likes pretty color charts, so here they are. I ran these on Solaris 11 running on a Piketon Platform system with a 4-core Intel Clarkdale processor @3.20GHz. Clarkdale which is part of the Westmere processor architecture family. The "before" case is Solaris 11, unmodified. Keep in mind that the "before" case already has been optimized with hand-coded Intel AESNI assembly. The "after" case has combined AES-NI and mode instructions, interleaved 4 blocks at-a-time. « For the first table, lower is better (milliseconds). The first table shows the performance improvement using the Solaris encrypt(1) and decrypt(1) CLI commands. I encrypted and decrypted a 1/2 GByte file on /tmp (swap tmpfs). Encryption improved by about 40% and decryption improved by about 80%. AES-128 is slighty faster than AES-256, as expected. The second table shows more detail timings for CBC, CTR, and ECB modes for the 3 AES key sizes and different data lengths. » The results shown are the percentage improvement as shown by an internal PKCS#11 microbenchmark. And keep in mind the previous baseline code already had optimized AESNI assembly! The keysize (AES-128, 192, or 256) makes little difference in relative percentage improvement (although, of course, AES-128 is faster than AES-256). Larger data sizes show better improvement than 128-byte data. Availability This software is in Solaris 11 FCS. It is available in the 64-bit libcrypto library and the "aes" Solaris kernel module. You must be running hardware that supports AESNI (for example, Intel Westmere and Sandy Bridge, microprocessor architectures). The easiest way to determine if AES-NI is available is with the isainfo(1) command. For example, $ isainfo -v 64-bit amd64 applications pclmulqdq aes sse4.2 sse4.1 ssse3 popcnt tscp ahf cx16 sse3 sse2 sse fxsr mmx cmov amd_sysc cx8 tsc fpu 32-bit i386 applications pclmulqdq aes sse4.2 sse4.1 ssse3 popcnt tscp ahf cx16 sse3 sse2 sse fxsr mmx cmov sep cx8 tsc fpu No special configuration or setup is needed to take advantage of this software. Solaris libraries and kernel automatically determine if it's running on AESNI-capable machines and execute the correctly-tuned software for the current microprocessor. Summary Maximum throughput of AES cipher modes can be achieved by combining AES encryption with modes processing, interleaving encryption of 4 blocks at a time, and using Intel's wide 128-bit %xmm registers and instructions. References "Block cipher modes of operation", Wikipedia Good overview of AES modes (ECB, CBC, CTR, etc.) "Advanced Encryption Standard", Wikipedia "Current Modes" describes NIST-approved block cipher modes (ECB,CBC, CFB, OFB, CCM, GCM)

  • Unable to boot Ubuntu 13.10 (nVidia GTX 770m and Intel HD 4600)

    - by Raziel Gonzalez
Ever since I bought this laptop I've been trying to install Ubuntu on it. It came with W8 preinstalled. Up to this point, I've been able to boot in UEFI mode with a black screen. I can tell it's trying to use the nVidia card (there's a led on the computer, depending on the color you can tell which GPU is using) and if I press crtl+alt+F1 I can go to console mode. Taking this advantage I tried to install bumblebee and after a successful install the led that indicates which GPU is being used change, indicating that it switched to the Intel HD 4600 graphics. After the installation I tried to initiate the graphic interface (startx) with no success.
