  • managing a high traffic media sharing website

    i'm in the process of developing a website that i predict will generate a lot of traffic. the site will be similar to many other sites offering free media streaming: mp3's. we are going to start with a pretty minimal amount of media to share, but the basic idea is that artists will set up a profile page with music they have made available for consumers to visit the page and listen to the music. we are starting with just a handful of artists, but i think that this project will generate more and more artist pages. eventually i'd like to set it up so consumers can create personalized playlists. how can i best prepare server space and bandwidth capabilities? i have a small team of web designers and programmers working on the site, as i am pretty illiterate when it comes to site management. as the ring leader of this organization, i am more or less looking for financial requirements and monthly burn rate estimates. i don't have a ton of capitol to start with, putting together a business plan, but i am seeking investments. i have a game plan to grow fast enough to be successful, and slow enough to manage the financial growth requirements. any questions i may have failed to ask myself? is it realistic to start this project on a shared server, and upgrade? any financial advice you think i can use? i really appreciate any advice given, as this is my first business venture. thank you all in advance.   • IIS login / logout interferes with media player

    So I'm listening to music with Windows Media Player, going insane because the music randomly stops playback every so often. I finally notice that it correlates with instances of csrss, winlogon, and logonui repeatedly starting and quitting. I finally tracked that down to IIS repeatedly logging on and off due to WebDAV requests going through my user account (my laptop syncing up with OneNote over WebDAV). I see tons of spam in my security event log for the logins. I am surprised that IIS needs to log in this much. This has only been happening for a couple of months. I'm not sure where the actual problem lies - with IIS, or Media Player, or what, so I figured I'd try and find out if the IIS login behavior is actually abnormal. Is it normal for IIS to log in this much? And is it normal for that to keep spawning winlogon, csrss, and logonui every second or so? I see a constant stream of logon events in the event log every few seconds presumably while OneNote is syncing. Logon (id = 1, source = laptop), Special Logon (id = 1, sets up privileges), Special Logon (id = 1, seems to set up the same privileges), Logon (id = 2, same laptop), Logoff (id = 2), Logoff (id = 1) The DefaultAppPool (only one apparently in use) has its idle timeout set to 20 minutes, and load user profile set to false. Not sure what other settings (if any) might be relevant.

  • Windows 7 Media Center: sometimes no sound on a TV channel

    Problem Sometimes, recorded TV shows have no sound. This is of course very annoying because the recorded show is worthless. Also, when switching channels while watching live TV, sometimes a channel has no sound. This is always solved by switching channel again and then back (most often, once will do the trick). Media Center doesn't do this trick by itself when recording of course, so that's the bigger issue - but the cause is certainly the same. Details The computer is running a newly installed Windows 7 and Windows Media Center. It has 2 different tuner-cards installed. Both are installed with signed and up-to-date Win7 drivers and appear OK in Device Manager. Both tuners get the same antenna signal, from a split cable from the wall. The cable delivers analog cable TV (40+ channels) and digital cable TV (4 channels) at the same time. Both tuners have been configured to receive both analog and digital channels. This only happens with analog channels. How can I fix the no-sound problem? Update: I've now spent some time with the computer to try and pinpoint the problem, but I've had little success so far: I flipped through the channels until one didn't have sound, then I disconnected the antenna cable from one of the tuners. It was the right one because then the video also went away. I flipped lots more channels to see if the other card also would come up mute once but I never had a channel without sound. It might still be possible, I don't know. Then I disconnected the "good" tuner and connected the "bad" tuner and again flipped lots of channels but again I never had a channel without sound. It seems to me that the problem is erratic. It happens on any channel, and I haven't ruled out yet that it only happens on one tuner.

  • Defining Social Media Terms

    As I talk about social in the context of retail, I sometimes get tripped up on different terms. I know what I mean, but the audience may have something else in mind. So I decided to see if I could find some well accepted definitions for common terms. While there are definitions on the Internet, I'm not sure they are well accepted. After reviewing several, here's what I came up with: Social Network: a structure of individuals and groups connected together by commonality. That seems pretty straightforward. A group of friends, co-workers, music fans, etc. The key here is that they have something in common that connects them. Social Media: Internet channels that support the collaborative publishing of information by and for social networks. The key here is to differentiate between traditional one-way media, and conversational social media. When its social its two-way, allowing both the publishing and consuming of information. Examples are blogs, wikis, Twitter, Facebook, etc. Social Marketing: the use of social media for marketing, public relations, and customer service. Wikipedia actually includes "selling" here but I think that's separate from marketing, as you'll see further down below. Most people look at social media as entertainment, but the marketing angle adds business value. This is where retailers discover and engage customers to build a relationship. Social Merchandising: the integration of social media and product discovery. Whereas marketing is focused more on brand image, customer engagement, and promotions, merchandising is more directly trying to convert browsers into purchases. This includes deciding what customers want, often by asking the social network, and deciding how to position products to the social network. Social Selling: the incorporation of e-commerce into social media. While on a social media site, social selling enables the purchasing of goods/services in the user's context, without leaving the social media channel. If a user clicks on an advertisement and is taken to an e-commerce site, then that's really just web advertising and not social selling. Well, do these terms and definitions make sense?   • Media server...serving files...............for a limited time only

    I’m new to Ubuntu and am seeking help with a media server I have built. I have a couple of HTPCs in my house running XBMC. I wanted to build one for the family room working double duty as a HTPC, and media server to share movies, TV shows, music, etc. on my Windows network. So using some spare old parts I had lying around I decided to go CRAZY and build my first Linux box. I used Ubuntu because it seemed to be the most user friendly variant, especially for people that are new to Linux. I had to do a few things to get the media files shared properly on my network: Made sure my two media drives auto-mount every time I boot the computer by editing the “fstab” file – “sudo nano /etc/fstab” Installed Samba - “sudo apt-get install samba” Set a password for Samba - “sudo smbpasswd –a USERNAME” Edited the Samba configuration file to make sure the computer was in my networks workgroup – “sudo nano /etc/samba/smb.conf” In the file manager (not sure if that’s the right name for it), I right-clicked my media folders and set the sharing and permissions. The sharing was done without guest access, and permissions were set to; Owner, Group, and Others - Access: Create and Delete Files. Adjusted the Power Management settings to never put the system into sleep mode. I checked to see if I had access to the files from a Windows 7 machine and I did (Woo Hoo!). But when I tried to play any of my video files from the Windows machine (using VLC media player), they would only play for about 2-5 minutes and then they would stop with an error message saying that the file could not be accessed (Booo...). I tried playing some files through XBMC running in Windows and they worked for a bit longer (about 10-15mins), but they also stopped playing. I installed the Linux version of XBMC on the server and played the files locally with no problems. It doesn’t seem to be an issue with the files themselves, it seems to be a sharing problem on my network. So my question to the Ubuntu gurus out there is: Did I miss adding/editing something in the Samba configuration file? Did I use the right method to share my media files (file manager vs. using the terminal)? Is it possible for the computer to still go to sleep without the screen going black (does that even make sense?). Are there any special settings in Ubuntu that I should be using since this computer as a media server (is there a media server mode?...!...?). Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. This information will be stored in a databse table (tbl_Color (HexTriplet,ColorName)) in my system Suppose I created a color with #5D8AA7 Hex Triplet. I need to get the nearest color available in the tbl_Color table. The expected anaser is "#5D8AA8 - Air Force Blue". This is because #5D8AA8 is the nearest color for #5D8AA7. Do we have any algorithm for finding the nearest color? How to write it using C# / Java?     Hi everybody, I know that there have quite a lot of answers to similar questions but I couldn't find any solution to my question, so new topic : I'm creating a listview, with one basic view per row, my try is to change the background color of the view by .setbackgroundcolor, but nothing's doing the trick... I define an array of color at the beginning of my resources and i'm trying to display it, I also tried to put the array in the class, write the color like #00FF00, int, and I wanted to try 0x...... but as my colors are in an array, I can't do 0x+myColorsArray[i] because Eclipse tells me that it's not a proper hex color... I'm getting a bit desperate... thanks for any help

  • Android color picker - updating color array

    Hi all, I'm trying to create a color picker for Android that looks like a minimalistic version of Gimp's. So, it has a hue slider and a rectangle with saturation/value variants of a color chosen in hue slider. Question: what is the best way to create the rectangle? Right now, I'm creating an 200x200 array of pixels, but it takes ~5sec to create and display rectangle with that array. And I need colors in rectangle to change whenever I change the value in hue slider... Rectangle is bitmap, btw. Can I use color matrices on that and how? Any examples? Thanks in advance!

  • UILabel background color not updating in UITableView

    I'm having a perplexing problem with a simple UILabel I put on a cell in a UITableView. I enter a separate view after tapping on a row, like many UITableViews. In there, I update the cell so that when I return to the rows, it should be updated, with this: MyTableViewCell* cell = (MyTableViewCell*) [mTableView cellForRowAtIndexPath: [NSIndexPath indexPathForRow:mActiveRow inSection:0]]; cell.myLabel.text = @"New Value"; // updated text cell.myLabel.backgroundColor = [UIColor greenColor]; // updated color When I return, though, only the text is updated, not the color. When I scroll the row off the screen and return it refreshes properly via another path of code that has exactly the same code. Could there be some trigger to refresh specifically the background color of the UILabel? I'm not sure why the text will refresh but the color won't.

  • Fixing color in scatter plots in matplotlib

    Hi guys, I'm going to have to come back and add some examples if you need them, which you might. But, here's the skinny- I'm plotting scatter plots of lab data for my research. I need to be able to visually compare the scatter plots from one plot to the next, so I want to fix the color range on the scatter plots and add in a colorbar to each plot (which will be the same in each figure). Essentially, I'm fixing all aspects of the axes and colorspace etc. so that the plots are directly comparable by eye. For the life of me, I can't seem to get my scatter() command to properly set the color limits in the colorspace (default)... i.e., I figure out my total data's min and total data's max, then apply them to vmin, vmax, for the subset of data, and the color still does not come out properly in both plots. This must come up here and there, I can't be the only one that wants to compare various subsets of data amongst plots... so, how do you fix the colors so that each data keeps it's color between plots and doesn't get remapped to a different color due to the change in max/min of the subset -v- the whole set?   • Change color of a table cell using javascript using dropdown menu

    I'd like to use some javascript code to change the background color of a single cell within a table. I have some code below which allows me to change the page background color. This is similar in concept to what I would like to do, but I would really like to be able to change just one cell...not the whole page. I have thought about making the rest of the cell borders and background colors white, leaving the cell I want to manipulate transparent, but I think this probably a brute force method that will cause me trouble down the road. Does anyone have any advice to do this with javascript?   • How to have a dynamic theme color in WPF

    In WPF I have a few resource dictionaries and in them styles for my panels and controls in my app. I'm reusing the same colors again and again. I actually have 5 colors and they give my app a good color-scheme. However if I wan't to change the theme I have to go into the RD's and change each and every color there. I would like to somewhere have the colors set but don't know how or where. I tried to put a color tag in one RD but as soon as I referenced it in the same RD Visual Studio crashed. Also the best solution would be that I could have the color as a dynamic setting in the app itself so users could even change it themselves.

    Win7-64: I have to do a midi project, and I just realized my asus p5k motherboard has no midi device, just the ad1988b high def audio chip. There is no midi device listed in device manager. How then is windows media player playing .mid files? It is playing them ok, is this some kind of software simulation of midi?
