• intel atom getting too hot

  I own an Asus 1215N which is getting very hot Intel Atom 525D dual core ION 2 (geforce 220 + GMA 3150) 4 GB RAM Ubuntu 12.04 it hits 86 C at idle. Some times (at load or turned on 1 hour) it shuts down due to heat, in Windows 7 it runs idle at 49 C. I tried an acpi call to shut down the nVidia chip which is cooled together with the Atom chip. That didn't solve the problem. To check up to see if it really turned off I checked how much power the laptop consumed, it only went from using 1400 mW to 860 mW, no changes in heat. I also tried reapply the standard heat adhesive, the old heat adhesive made it run at 97 (it couldn't even put up a useful install of Ubuntu). This really annoys me, as Ubuntu is the OS of choice to me. Should I try compile the kernel? Is it true that compile for a P4 is the better choice to the atom, when compiling the kernel for this processor architecture? Now I tried compiling the kernel for atom. Now temperature is 83 C (think the drop has more to do with ambient temp than the customized kernel) help appreciated

• The Apple Passbook

  In a previous job I worked on smart card systems.  Our vision was to replace the physical wallet with a chip card that contained stored value, credit cards, and loyalty cards.  The technology was up to the task, but the business model never worked out.  When all those things go onto a single card, who owns the card and maintains the applications?  Each bank wanted their own card with branding, so instead of consolidating lots of cards onto one, we ended up with the same number of cards, just more expensive chip cards.  The Costanza wallet would not die. More recently I've been able to move lots of these cards into iOS apps using products like CardStar, TripIt, and Fandango.  I guess moving from physical to digital is progress, but still no consolidation.  But this week Apple announced its Passbook, an iOS feature that consolidates boarding passes, loyalty cards, and movie tickets.  Another step in the right direction. We've been waiting for Apple to announce a NFC solution to take advantage of the 400 million credit cards it stores in iTunes for its customers.  Perhaps Passbook is the first step in that direction.  It wouldn't take much to add credit cards to Passbook, then enable secure transfer of the track data using a NFC equipped iPhone.  I've got to think this has to be part of the larger vision, but of course Apple is very secretive. I think the steps will be loyalty, coupons, and then payment when it comes to the evolving Passbook.  Retailers should keep an eye on Apple, and expect these things to happen in the Apple stores first.

• Passing Querystring style parameters into Javascript file

  Hi, Not sure if this is possible or even if I should do it, but I think it's quite interesting. I have a javascript file which I'm referencing in a flat HTML page. I'd like to pass in a parameter or two via the path to the script. Like this; <script src="/scripts/myJavascriptFile.js?config1=true" type="text/javascript"></script> Not really sure if it can work but it would make my solution a little easier for others to take my script and implement (arguable). Here's the final structure I want: <garage> <car>Firebird</car> <car>Prius</car> <car>Altima</car> </garage> So given the C# code: XmlNode priusNode = GetReferenceToPriusNode() What's the best way to cause the priusNode to "move up" one place in the garage's child list? • How can I pass a raw System.Drawing.Image to an .ashx?

  I am developing an application that stores images as Base64 strings in xml files. I also want to allow the user to crop the image before saving it to the file, preferably all in memory without having to save a temp file, and then delete it afterwards. In order to display the newly uploaded image, I need to create a HTTP handler that I can bind the asp:Image to. The only examples for doing this online require passing the .ashx an ID and then pulling the image from a DB or other data store. Is it possible to somehow pass the raw data to the .ashx in order to get back the image? Thanks, Mike

• IE 8 dialog windows not decompressing files

  Hi, I've got a website where we have pre-compressed all of our HTML files. In general this works fine, but since IE 8 has come out some people are finding that they can not use some parts of the website. We've used the showModalDialog command to open a dialog window and pointing to one of our pre-compressed files but it displays it just show up as strange characters (ie not decompressed). Now it only happens in the dialog. I'm pretty sure our compression is all fine because the page they are viewing to open the dialog is also compressed. Has anyone else come across this or got any suggestions cuz i'm stumped??? Thanks, Mike

• Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions

  Okay, I realize there are many questions relating to this error, I have read several questions and answers without resolving my problem. I have a MVC site that I'm trying to debug on local IIS web server. I check the option to use local IIS in the project properties and I've created a virtual directory in IIS. The error I get in Visual Studio is: Unable to start debugging on web server. In IIS i try browse the site but get the error: Cannot read configuration file due to insufficient permissions Config File \?\C:\Users\Mike\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\MvcApplication1\MvcApplication1\web.config I've set permissions for the pool identity on the web.config and whole project folder. I've tried localsystem identity, no luck! Please help me resolve this. I've spent several hours trying to fix this.

• PHP/Apache: Permission settings for uploaded JPEG image files not correct.

  I just setup a LAMP development server and am still trouble-shooting some things. The server is installed on one computer and I use a Windows laptop to write my code and test the site via the web browser. My file uploading script works in that JPEG image files are successfully uploaded to the server, but when I try to view the images in the web browser, permission is denied. I check the permissions on the file via the server and they are 600. I can fix the issue by chmod 777 theimage.jpg, but this doesn't seem like a good solution at all. Does the solution have something to do with Apache configuration? Or is there something else I should be doing. Thank-you, Mike

• FolderDialog Box Crashing Only in Debug Mode VSD2008

  I have a folderBrowseDialog box in an application. It has been working for a month. Lately when I run the project from VS 2008 and I click on a button that opens the box the command ShowDialog() runs. The browser box shows up for a second and then I get "Windows encountered a problem box". Now here is the interest thing, if I compile the project, whether it be in the Debug or Release profile, and navigate to the exe, everything runs fine. Has anyone have this issue before? • cURL - put output into variable?

  Hi, I'm currently using this C code: CURL *curl; CURLcode res; curl = curl_easy_init(); if (curl) { curl_easy_setopt(curl, CURLOPT_URL, "http://my-domain.org/"); res = curl_easy_perform(curl); curl_easy_cleanup(curl); } It prints the output on the console. How can I get the same output, but read it into, say, a string? (This is a probably a basic question, but I do not yet understand the libcurl API...) Thanks for any help! Mike

• Powershell call web service on new email event (Exchange 2010)

  I have Exchange 2010 and I need to run a process using web services against every new email to come in to a mailbox. The process will basically add the email to an internal task list. Can I use Powershell for this? Having never used Powershell before I don't really have a clue on it's capabilities. If not can anyone suggest another way of doing this other than monitoring the mailbox every X seconds. Really I'd like it event based so if no new mail then no processing. Cheers, Mike

  Hello, this is just teorethical question. I use JDBC with my Java applications for using database (select, insert, update, delete or whatever). I make "manually" Java classes which will contain data from DB tables (attribute = db column). Than I make querys (ResultSet) and fill those classes with data. I am not sure, if this is the right way. But I've read lot of about JDO and another persistence solutions. Can you please recommend some? Which are modern? Will be used in the future? Some advantages of JDO over JDBC (in simple words). I've been able to google lot of this stuff, but opinions from the "first hand" are always best. Thank you for responses, Mike

• Change color of a table cell using javascript using dropdown menu

  I'd like to use some javascript code to change the background color of a single cell within a table. I have some code below which allows me to change the page background color. This is similar in concept to what I would like to do, but I would really like to be able to change just one cell...not the whole page. I have thought about making the rest of the cell borders and background colors white, leaving the cell I want to manipulate transparent, but I think this probably a brute force method that will cause me trouble down the road. Does anyone have any advice to do this with javascript? • Image Data via Ajax - how can I display the image on the Page

  I am creating a Domino Document via AJAX that contains a photo. I am able to get the base64 image data back to the server in a Notes Domino Document. Data is stored in a Richtext (textarea) field as "data:image/jpeg;base64,/9j/4AAQSkZJRgABAQAAAQABAAD/2wBDAFA..........." - (this goes on for several lines) I am trying to display on the Domino Webpage using passthru tag <<image id= "pic1" >> in the onLoad event of the Form i try to shove the data into the image element using this code: //Photo Stuff alert(document.forms[0].photo1.value); document.getElementById("pic1").src = document.forms[0].photo1.value; The alert is showing the data. • HP Pavilion 15 with AMD dual graphics - Ubuntu live environment not starting

  I've had this laptop for about a day now and have decided to try Ubuntu on it and determine if I want to install it. I created a USB, it booted (Secure Boot was on, I tried with Secure Boot off to no effect), and then the problem occurred. The screen turned off for a second, turned back on to a black screen, shut off again and turned back on with a dialogue box telling me that the system had to use low-graphics mode. I clicked OK, selected low-graphics mode from the menu and clicked OK. The screen switched to the boot messages and did not go any further than this. Ctrl+Alt+DEL started rebooting the laptop though. I tried booting again, but this time I edited the boot options in GRUB to add nomodeset. This time, the laptop only booted to a black screen. Ctrl+Alt+F2 took me to a prompt, I tried startx from there, but X didn't start, complaining that it wanted kernel mode setting back. I can not seem to find any option to disable one graphics chip or the other in the UEFI setup menus. Laptop : HP Pavilion 15-E004AU. The CPU : AMD A6-4400M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics The graphics chip : AMD Radeon HD 7520G + 8670M Dual Graphics. The Ubuntu version : 13.10, 64 bit. Thanks. EDIT: I tried 12.04.3 LTS, it managed to bring the desktop up. There are severe graphics glitches after about two minutes though.

  Hey, I'm making an e-shop and to display the tree of categories and all the products with their multiple variations of prices I made like more than 150 mysql_query("SELECT ..."); queries on one page. (If I count the "while" loops). Is it too many, and if yes, can it have any negative effect? (ofc. it takes longer to load the data ..)   I've just come across this code snippet in some Exchange 2010 code and I was wondering if anyone knew why the programmer has done it this way. I've never seen an If statement formatted like this. It seems so backwards there must be a good reason for it?? if (true == MsgItem.HasAttachments) { // Code } I'm assuming it might have some optimisation over the various other ways of coding the same thing; if (MsgItem.HasAttachments) { // Code } or if (MsgItem.HasAttachments == true) { // Code } Its not a big deal I'm just curious. • Problem with installing Nvidia display drivers on Ubuntu 13.10

  Hello everyone and thank you for taking a look at this topic! I'm currently trying out Ubuntu 13.10 but I keep hitting a wall when it comes to installing a driver. I've tried: sudo apt-get install nvidia-current This resulted in a un-bootable system. The screen just stayed black and the cursor displayed as an 'X'. After that I did had to re-install Ubuntu. The computer I'm using is an Acer-Aspire-V3 with a build in Nvidia geforce GT 630M and also with a Intel HD graphics chip-set (not sure if chip-set is the right word here). "lspci | grep VGA" output: pascal@pascal-Aspire-V3-571G:~$ lspci | grep VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF108M [GeForce GT 630M] (rev a1) I've searched a bit here and there and found out that it would be wise to mention that this laptop is using (or so I think) Nvidia Optimus, not sure if it will add anything to the subject but at least I'll mention it just to be sure. Now to the questions: Q1 How is this caused and how can I fix it? Q2 What additional information could I provide to help you help me?

I basically had to install 12.04 LTS and use their 3.5 kernel family to get the system to boot. The 3.8 from 12.10 or the newest 3.11 from Ubuntu 13.10 leave me with a black screen upon boot. On one occasion I did hear the "log in" sound, but the screen did not display anything. I have purged all nvidia drivers so I guess it should just use the intel drivers, but apparently this is all messed up with newer kernel versions. This is different from the other "nvidia boots into blank screen" bug in that I don't rely solely on an nvidia card. Surely the intel on-chip card should be supported and leave me with something different from a blank screen? Again, it only works with kernel versions 3.5.0-41-generic, not with the 3.11.0-12 one that ships with Ubuntu 13.10. When I go into the grub menu and change the boot options from 'quiet splash' to 'nomodeset' I am able to boot the system, but then I don't get any graphics and trying 'sudo service lightdm start' doesn't succeed (I get 100% CPU for apport, but this doesn't do anything either, so I kill it). Help, I'm all out of ideas. EDIT: Let me add that I'm using the EFI boot system and have a dual-boot installation with Windows 8.
