• Which app can I use for easily annotating pictures/screenshots?

  Often I need to annotate (draw some arrows, lines, basic shapes like squares, ellipses etc and enter some text) on top of pictures (JPG, PNG images) and screenshots (again png images). I would also need to be able to crop, resize etc. I tried the Gimp but I could only enter text and perform all image transformations but couldn't find a way to draw boxes etc. I finally settled to Openoffice.org draw, but I know that isn't what I want, because in oodraw I need to insert my pic into a drawing and resize it (or the drawing) to fit and then go about making changes and finally export to png... Is there any image editor that allows adding shapes and text to jpg & png files and save the modified file in its place? If the tool can also have template collections (like dia does) for shapes that is an added bonus.

• Dual-screen Multimedia Control Suite for Linux (like Screen Monkey)

  I'm looking for some linux software to manage and control a dual monitor/multi screen setup for use in professional-like presentations (ie: monitor1=control, monitor2=projector/audience). I have the dual-monitor configured with my gnome desktop running over both monitors (that's the easy part). What I'm looking for is a neat/seamless way to switch between, say, OpenOffice Impress, DVD Player, VLC live video, Lyricue, other software on monitor2. To have monitor2 shown to the audience and run neat presentations of DVDs, Slideshows, etc. whilst controlling it from monitor1. I can run slideshows, play a DVD on monitor2 (drag & drop VLC on monitor2, and go fullscreen) etc. but this is rather messy in a presentation environment. I found this software: Screen Monkey. Looks like an excellent windows equivalent for what I want to do. Is there anything similar for linux? For Gnome, KDE, anything else X based? Thanks, SamJ

• Need disc image help pronto!

  I recently got a job as a junior network administrator. Last week the senior admins did their yearly reinstall of server 2003, exchange, drivers etc on the main server. I've been asked to back up the disc so that next year they can just copy over the pre-made image. What tools can i use to achieve both the creation of the entire servers HDD image and loading it back on (id like to test it in the sandbox.) To impress them, a program that is free is preferable. And maybe a tool that can do it all from booting the program off of a USB drive.

• What should I quote for a project I hope to get a job at the end of?

  Long story short: I applied for a (CakePHP, MySQL, etc) development job in London, UK. I grew up in Britain but am currently based quite a few thousand miles away in Canada, so I wasn't really expecting success. But quite a few emails and phone interviews later it seems that they really like me. At least to a point. Because such a major relocation would be a horrible thing to go wrong, they've sensibly suggested a trial run of getting me to build a website at a distance. I have the spec for this and it's quite a substantial amount of work. My problem is that I now need to suggest both a fee and a timescale for the job, and I haven't got any significant experience of working as a contractor. Looking at the spec, which is 1500 words of many concisely stated features, some fairly trivial and some moderately involved, I can easily imagine there being 2 weeks of intensive work there. (If everything went really well it might be closer to one week, but even though I want to impress, I definitely don't want to fall into the inexperienced-contractor trap of massively underestimating the amount of time a project will run to.) As an extra complication, there is no expectation that I should give up my day job to get this trial project done, so the hours will have to be clawed from evenings and weekends. I don't want to overcommit to a quick delivery date, only to find myself swiftly burning out due to an unrealistic workload. So, any advice for me? My main question is, what is a realistic hourly figure to demand of a stable but not excessively wealthy London-based company in the current market, bearing in mind that I'd like them to hire me afterwards? But any more general recommendations based on my circumstances above would be much appreciated too. Many thanks!

• The biggest ADF conference "down under"

  While Oracle Open World is the place to be for ADF presentations, for Aussies living in Perth, San Francisco is a tad far away (believe me from experience, the 23hrs flight from PER-SYD-SFO is tedious).  That's why I'm very excited to see that the Australian Oracle User Group at this year's Perth conference is running its largest set of ADF presentation to date: 5! Okay, it doesn't compare to the 60 ADF sessions at OOW, but it's a small conference of around 300 people that runs for 2 days with 54 sessions total, not 40000 people that runs for 5 days with 1900+ sessions, so I think that's a good effort for a conference that's at the end of the earth! • Why We Need UX Designers

  Ok, so maybe this is really why I need UX designers.  While I have always had an interest in photography and can appreciate a well designed user interface putting one together is an entirely different endeavor.  Being color blind doesn’t help, but coming up with ideas is probably the biggest portion of the issue.  I can spot things that just don’t look like they work right, but what will? UX designers is an area that most companies do not spend much if any resources.  As they say, you only get one chance to make a first impression and and a poorly designed site or application is a bad first impression.  Given that they you would think that companies would invest more in appearance and usability. One of two things need to be done to rectify this issue.  Either we need to start educating our developers on user experience and design or we need to start finding ways to subsidize putting full time designers on our project teams.  Maybe it should be a time share type of situation, but something needs to be done.  As architects we need to impress on our project stakeholders the importance of User Experience and why it should be part of the budget.  If they hear it often enough eventually they may present it to you as their own idea. del.icio.us Tags: User Experience,UX,Application Design

• Recent update killed unity 3d launcher

  I am scratching my head on this one, a lot of things are still new to me. I updated 126 packages just now through the update manager, and upon reboot everything works fine except the unity launcher. It's just a dark space. The dash still works, as does the top panel and docky. • Launching LibreOffice Files - Unusual Window Behaviour

  Ubuntu 11.10 Unity. If I launch LibreOffice Files (ODS, ODT, ODP) with a double click in their home folders they launch with the appropriate application (Calc, Writer, Impress) however the application windows do not display the usual Close, Minimize, Restore buttons in the left hand corner. There is just a blank space where they should be. In the Unity launcher on the left there is not the expected white arrow next to the launcher icon and the open app is not seen by the ALT+TAB keystroke when you have multiple windows open. For example: if you have an app open in this way and say Firefox, if you minimize Firefox you are only left with the desktop and you have no way to locate the open LibreOffice app. Clicking the app's icon in the launcher simply opens another instance. A messy workaround is to click [Firefox] to a restored window and the LibreOffice app can be seen behind it allowing a mouse click to bring it forward. If I open the LibreOffice app from the launcher and then Open a file from its menu, it all behaves as expected. I don't find this as convenient; anyone know how to fix the bad behaviour?

• Working with the ADF DVT Map Component

  The map component provided by the ADF Faces DVT set of components is one that we are always ending up using in key demos - simply because it is so nice looking, but also because it is quite simple to use. So in case you need to show some geographical data, or if you just want to impress your manager, here is a little video that shows you how to create two types of maps. The first one is a color themed map - where you show different states with different colors based on the value of some data point there. The other is a point theme - basically showing specific locations on the map. For both cases I'm using the Oracle provided mapviewer instance at http://elocation.oracle.com/mapviewer. You can find more information about using the map component in the Web User Interface Developer's Guide here and in the tag doc and components demo.   I want to use the openoffice chinese fonts, eg AR PL SungtiL GB, but the xelatex tells me that it is an invalid name (as shown below). It seems like the font name has spaces and so it doesn't recognize it? How should I get around this? (/usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/latex/base/syntonly.sty)kpathsea: Invalid fontname `AR PL SungtiL GB', contains ' ' I am using the xeCJK package in XeTeX 3.1415926-2.2-0.9995.2 (TeX Live 2009/Debian) on Ubuntu.

This question has been asked on SO, but essentially recommends running OpenOffice in headless X server, which was an absolute pain last time I used it. (Mostly due to hard to replicate bugs due to OO crashing.) Is there any other way, (Hopefully using Linux CLI utilities only, and pure Python above them?)

  i want to write program, in windows, which will write a .sh file, then connect to a linux machine via cygwin and ssh, and execute that .sh file. I've had to use dos2unix to convert .sh files that I created in windows to run under linux. Obviously if I am executing a script with ssh it will have to be linux formatted to work. so I need to know how to create a linux appropriate .sh file using c or openoffice basic or vBA. thanks!

  I am generating a csv file from a PHP array. It opens just fine in Excel and OpenOffice Calc, however the data in one of the column are zip codes. Excel makes the cell formats of the column number general by default. This results in the leading 0 getting dropped in zip codes. Is there any way I can specify the cell formats within the CSV file?

  I want too display PPTs as inline on webpage via swf. So I convert them to swf using OpenOffice scripting. I can embed them into webpage via swfobject, however this has two major problems, Swfobject require me to tell the size of uploaded swfs, which I dont know in advance, as size/aspect ratio of swf depends on uploaded presentation. This doesnot put next/previous controls. Is there a tool/library using which I can emebed swf player in page without these problems.
