  • Beginner to RUBY - require_relative problem

    Hi, I'm learning Ruby (using version 1.8.6) on Windows 7. • When -exactly- does the Rails3 application get initialized?

    - by bergyman
    I've been fighting left and right with rails 3 and bundler. There are a few gems out there that don't work properly if the rails application hasn't been loaded yet. factory_girl and shoulda are both examples, even on the rails3 branch. Taking shoulda as an example, when trying to run rake test:units I get the following error: DEPRECATION WARNING: RAILS_ROOT is deprecated! Use Rails.root instead. (called from autoload_macros at c:/code/test_harness/vendor/windows_gems/gems/shoulda-2.10.3/lib/shoulda/autoload_macros.rb:40) c:/code/test_harness/vendor/windows_gems/gems/shoulda-2.10.3/lib/shoulda/autoload_macros.rb:44:in 'join': can't convert #<Class:0x232b7c0> into String (TypeError) from c:/code/test_harness/vendor/windows_gems/gems/shoulda-2.10.3/lib/shoulda/autoload_macros.rb:44:in 'block in autoload_macros' from c:/code/test_harness/vendor/windows_gems/gems/shoulda-2.10.3/lib/shoulda/autoload_macros.rb:44:in 'map' from c:/code/test_harness/vendor/windows_gems/gems/shoulda-2.10.3/lib/shoulda/autoload_macros.rb:44:in 'autoload_macros' from c:/code/test_harness/vendor/windows_gems/gems/shoulda-2.10.3/lib/shoulda/rails.rb:17:in '<top (required)>' Digging a bit deeper into lib/shoulda/rails, I see this: root = if defined?(Rails.root) && Rails.root Rails.root else RAILS_ROOT end # load in the 3rd party macros from vendorized plugins and gems Shoulda.autoload_macros root, File.join("vendor", "{plugins,gems}", "*") So...what's happening here is while Rails.root is defined, Rails.root == nil, so RAILS_ROOT is used, and RAILS_ROOT==nil, which is then being passed on to Shoulda.autoload_macros. Obviously the rails app has yet to be initialized. With Rails3 using Bundler now, there's been some hubub over on the Bundler side about being able to specify an order in which the gems are required, but I'm not sure whether or not this would solve the problem at hand. Ultimately my questions is this: When exactly does the environment.rb file (which actually initializes the application) get pulled in? Is there any harm to bumping up when the app is initialized and have it happen before the Bundler.require line in config/application.rb? I've tried to hack bundler to specify the order myself, and have the rails gem pulled in first, but it doesn't appear to me that requiring the rails gem actually initializes the application. As this line (in config/application.rb) is being called before the app is initialized, any gem in the bundler Gemfile that requires rails to be initialized is going to tank. # Auto-require default libraries and those for the current Rails environment. Bundler.require :default, Rails.env

  • Admin interface in Rails

    - by yuval
    I have an admin controller located in controllers/admin/admin_controller.rb I also have a pages controller located in controllers/admin/pages_controller.rb pages_controller.rb inherits from admin_controller.rb in routes.rb, I have an admin namespace as such: map.namespace :admin do |admin| admin.resources :pages end I want the admin have basic CRUD functionality in pages_controller.rb (I know how to do that) I want the index and show methods to be available to front-end users I would like the show and index actions to use separate views, but the same code. Questions: Should I create a new pages_controller for the front-end, or share the methods index and show? If share, how would I display separate views depending on whether the url is /admin/pages or /pages If share, should I place pages_controller in /controllers/admin (where it is now) or just in /controllers? Thank you very much.

  • NameError: uninitialized constant Nokogiri::HTML::DocumentFragment

    - by Mike Sutton
    About three hours ago I started seeing the above error in my production server. It comes from a call to the sanitize gem: vendor/rails/activerecord/lib/../../activesupport/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:276:in 'load_missing_constant' vendor/rails/activerecord/lib/../../activesupport/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:468:in `const_missing' vendor/gems/sanitize-1.2.0/lib/sanitize.rb:91:in `clean!' vendor/gems/sanitize-1.2.0/lib/sanitize.rb:84:in `clean' vendor/gems/sanitize-1.2.0/lib/sanitize.rb:49:in `clean' app/helpers/application_helper.rb:28:in `display_none' app/views/main/_blogs.html.erb:13:in `_run_erb_47app47views47main47_blogs46html46erb' The error only occurs on the production server (linux), not my development machine (windows) I tried rolling back my latest deployment but it didn't fix it. I've updated to sanitize 1.2.0 (which was the latest version brought down by gem update sanitize, though I note my host is running 1.3.6. Can anyone provide any clues to help fix this?

  • How does Rails find models and controllers? How can I get it to load more models?

    - by David
    I'm trying to create a non-ActiveRecord model in app/models/gamestate.rb. Then inside my controller (PlayController) I should be able to do GameState.new, right? No go: NameError (uninitialized constant PlayController::GameState): app/controllers/play_controller.rb:23:in `play' (at least in the development environment) But! If I do have a model called app/models/play.rb, then it's automatically loaded and I can do Play.new. So my question is: how does Rails know which classes to load? What sort of name mangling does it do to get from play#action to PlayController to app/controllers/play_controller.rb to app/models/play.rb? It seems awfully fragile, but maybe a better understanding of how this works would help. And finally, how can I get it to load app/models/gamestate.rb?

  • rails large amount of data in single insert activerecord gave out

    - by Nik
    So I have I think around 36,000 just to be safe, a number I wouldn't think was too large for a modern sql database like mysql. Each record has just two attributes. So I do: so I collected them into one single insert statement sql = "INSERT INTO tasks (attrib_a, attrib_b) VALUES (c1,d1),(c2,d2),(c3,d3)...(c36000,d36000);" ActiveRecord::Base.connection.execute sql from C:/Ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/connection_adapters/abstract_adapter.rb:219:in `log' from C:/Ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activerecord-2.3.5/lib/active_record/connection_adapters/mysql_adapter.rb:323:in `execute_without_analyzer from c:/r/projects/vendor/plugins/rails-footnotes/lib/rails-footnotes/notes/queries_note.rb:130:in `execute' from C:/Ruby/lib/ruby/1.8/benchmark.rb:308:in `realtime' from c:/r/projects/vendor/plugins/rails-footnotes/lib/rails-footnotes/notes/queries_note.rb:130:in `execute' from (irb):53 from C:/Ruby/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activesupport-2.3.5/lib/active_support/vendor/tzinfo-0.3.12/tzinfo/time_or_datetime.rb:242 I don't know if the above info is enough, please do ask for anything that I didn't provide here. • Rails 3 namespacing requires model to be defined twice?

    - by RSG
    I'm pulling my hair out trying to understand namespacing in Rails 3. I've tried following a few different tutorials, and the only way I can get my models to work is if I define my model in both the base directory and my namespace directory. If I only define the model in the namespace directory it expects it to define both Model and Namespace::Model, as below: LoadError (Expected .../app/models/plugins/chat.rb to define Chat): or LoadError (Expected .../app/models/plugins/chat.rb to define Plugins::Chat): I'm sure I'm missing something obvious, but I could really use a pointer in the right direction. Here are the relevant excerpts. /models/plugins/chat.rb class Plugins::Chat include ActiveModel::Validations include ActiveModel::Conversion extend ActiveModel::Naming ... end /controllers/plugins/chats_controller.rb class Plugins::ChatsController < Plugins::ApplicationController load_and_authorize_resource ... end /config/routes.rb namespace :plugins do resources :chats end /config/application.rb config.autoload_paths += Dir["#{config.root}/app/models/**/"]

  • How to disable Empty Recycle Bin confirmation dialog?

    - by kjo
    In Windows 7 (at least) when one chooses Empty Recycle Bin from the RB menu, one gets prompted with a dialog like: Are you sure you want to permanently delete these 11 items? (modulo the actual number of items mentioned). Is there a way to disable this dialog (without disabling the use of the RB altogether)? NOTE 1: This dialog comes up even if one has unchecked the box labeled "Display delete confirmation dialog" in the RB Properties dialog (as long as the RB has not been disabled). NOTE 2: As alluded to above, any answer that entails disabling the use of the Recycle Bin altogether is explicitly ruled out. This includes any answer that involves selecting the button labeled "Don't move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted." in the RB Preferences window. NOTE 3: This question has nothing to do with Outlook Express.

  • File type actions for ruby scripts

    - by Kovags
    Hello, I just installed the Ruby interpreter and created the file test.rb. In the Folder Options, I created the rb file type and an action called Run and assigned the application C:\Ruby192\bin\ruby.exe "%1"" So It's possible for to get into the Windows XP command line and run the script simply by doing this: C:\>test.rb But when I need to send parameters to the script, I can't simply do the following: C:test.rb parameter1 parameter2 I'll have to do the following instead: C:\Ruby192\bin\ruby.exe c:\test.rb parameter1 parameter2 I just noticed that I'm able to edit the action the following way to pass more parameters: C:\Ruby192\bin\ruby.exe "%1" "%2" "%3"" That allows me to give 2 parameters to the script, but for some cases I need to pass a handful of parameters and it doesn't seem right for me to append "%5" "%6" "%7" ad nauseam. What's the canonical way to do it?

  • How to use Sprockets Rails plugin on Heroku?

    - by Kevin
    Hi, I just deployed my Rails app to Heroku, but the Javascripts that were using Sprockets plugin don't work. I understood that, because my Heroku app is read-only, Sprockets won't work. I've found this sprockets_on_heroku plugin that should do the work, but I don't really get how to use it : I added config.gem sprockets in config/environment.rb I added sprockets in my .gems file I pushed these on Heroku and Sprockets was successfully installed I locally ran script/plugin install git://github.com/jeffrydegrande/sprockets_on_heroku.git and the plugin was successfully installed Nothing changed on Heroku, so I tried to install the plugin on Heroku with heroku plugins:install git://github.com/jeffrydegrande/sprockets_on_heroku.git, which returned sprockets_on_heroku installedbut then, a heroku restartor a heroku pluginscommand would return this: ~/.heroku/plugins/sprockets_on_heroku/init.rb:1: uninitialized constant ActionController (NameError) from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/heroku-1.8.3/bin/../lib/heroku/plugin.rb:25:in `load' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/heroku-1.8.3/bin/../lib/heroku/plugin.rb:25:in `load!' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/heroku-1.8.3/bin/../lib/heroku/plugin.rb:22:in `each' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/heroku-1.8.3/bin/../lib/heroku/plugin.rb:22:in `load!' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/heroku-1.8.3/bin/../lib/heroku/command.rb:14:in `run' from /opt/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/heroku-1.8.3/bin/heroku:14 from /opt/local/bin/heroku:19:in `load' from /opt/local/bin/heroku:19 What should I do? I get the following error: /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/rack/handler/fastcgi.rb:23:in `initialize': Address already in use - bind(2) (Errno::EADDRINUSE) from /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/rack/handler/fastcgi.rb:23:in `new' from /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/rack/handler/fastcgi.rb:23:in `run' from /www/test.rb:7 Here is the application: #!/usr/bin/ruby app = Proc.new do |env| [200, {'Content-Type' => 'text/plain'}, "Hello World!"] end require 'rack' Rack::Handler::FastCGI.run app, :Port => 4000 ... and the lighttpd.conf: server.modules += ( "mod_access", "mod_accesslog", "mod_fastcgi" ) server.port = 80 server.document-root = "/www" mimetype.assign = ( ".html" => "text/html", ".txt" => "text/plain", ".jpg" => "image/jpeg", ".png" => "image/png" ) index-file.names = ( "test.rb" ) fastcgi.debug = 1 fastcgi.server = ( ".rb" => (( "host" => "127.0.0.1", "port" => 4000, "bin-path" => "/www/test.rb", "check-local" => "disable", "max-procs" => 1 )) ) Can someone help me? What am I doing wrong?

  • In Ruby, why is a method invocation not be able to be treated as a unit when "do" and "end" is used?

    - by Jian Lin
    The following question is related to the question "Ruby Print Inject Do Syntax". My question is, can we insist on using do and end and make it work with puts or p? This works: a = [1,2,3,4] b = a.inject do |sum, x| sum + x end puts b # prints out 10 so, is it correct to say, inject is a class method of the Array class, which takes a block of code, and then returns a number. If so, then it should be no different from calling a function and getting back a return value: b = foo(3) puts b or b = circle.getRadius() puts b In the above two cases, we can directly say puts foo(3) puts circle.getRadius() so, there is no way to make it work directly by using the following 2 ways: a = [1,2,3,4] puts a.inject do |sum, x| sum + x end but it gives ch01q2.rb:7:in `inject': no block given (LocalJumpError) from ch01q2.rb:4:in `each' from ch01q2.rb:4:in `inject' from ch01q2.rb:4 grouping the method call using ( ) doesn't work either: a = [1,2,3,4] puts (a.inject do |sum, x| sum + x end) and this gives: ch01q3.rb:4: syntax error, unexpected kDO_BLOCK, expecting ')' puts (a.inject do |sum, x| ^ ch01q3.rb:4: syntax error, unexpected '|', expecting '=' puts (a.inject do |sum, x| ^ ch01q3.rb:6: syntax error, unexpected kEND, expecting $end end) ^ finally, the following version works: a = [1,2,3,4] puts a.inject { |sum, x| sum + x } but why doesn't the grouping of the method invocation using ( ) work in the earlier example? What if a programmer insist that he uses do and end, can it be made to work?

  • Heroku app throws "Internal Server Error"

    - by picardo
    This app works just fine on my local computer. After pushing it to Heroku, static pages appear to be working but the blog section throws an Internal Server Error. I pulled the logs by running "heroku logs" and this is what I get: ==> production.log <== /usr/ruby1.8.7/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/eventmachine-0.12.10/lib/eventmachine.rb:256:in `run' /home/slugs/215194_e5b887e_c999/mnt/.bundle/gems/gems/thin-1.2.7/lib/thin/backends/base.rb:57:in `start' /home/slugs/215194_e5b887e_c999/mnt/.bundle/gems/gems/thin-1.2.7/lib/thin/server.rb:156:in `start' /home/slugs/215194_e5b887e_c999/mnt/.bundle/gems/gems/thin-1.2.7/lib/thin/controllers/controller.rb:80:in `start' /home/slugs/215194_e5b887e_c999/mnt/.bundle/gems/gems/thin-1.2.7/lib/thin/runner.rb:177:in `send' /home/slugs/215194_e5b887e_c999/mnt/.bundle/gems/gems/thin-1.2.7/lib/thin/runner.rb:177:in `run_command' /home/slugs/215194_e5b887e_c999/mnt/.bundle/gems/gems/thin-1.2.7/lib/thin/runner.rb:143:in `run!' /home/slugs/215194_e5b887e_c999/mnt/.bundle/gems/gems/thin-1.2.7/bin/thin:6 Something wrong with the eventmachine gem, I suppose....but it works fine on my machine. So I'm not sure what's going on or how to debug it.
