• Problems with WCF reliable session (reliable messaging)

  Hi, In our WCF application I am trying to configure reliable sessions. If I disable the reliableSession on the client I get this message: The action is not supported by this endpoint. Only WS-ReliableMessaging February 2005 messages are processed by this endpoint. So it seems that the server is configured correctly for RM. I cannot find anything valuable about the error I get so I don't know how to fix this. Any ideas what can be wrong? Thank in advance, Rob

• Android SDK fails to install

  When I try to install the android SDK it fails to install. My OS is Windows XP I just downloaded and installed Java JDK 1.6 Java -version from the command line returns: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/ask java version "1.6.0_17" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_17-b04) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 14.3-b01, mixed mode, sharing) My environment vars have: JAVA_HOME=c:\progra~1\java\jdk1.6.0_11 I downloaded android-sdk-r04-windows.zip I unziped it in V:\AndroidInstall\ When I go to the V:\androindinstall\android-sdk-windows and type "SDK Install.exe" nothing happens... If I go this from graph When I do this from a graphical file viewer I get a quick flash that looks like a command line window and nothing.... When I try to run android list targets from the tool directory I get: Error: Error parsing the sdk. Error: V:\androindinstall\android-sdk-windows\platforms is missing. Error: Unable to parse SDK content. So the basic install setup is not happening. Additional clues: I have a G1 and Android 1.0 was running on this machine. (Almost a year ago) I've updated my G1 to 1.6 so I thought I'd update my SDK before starting new development. When I tried to upgrade it tried and then died as the "directory was in use" So I cleaned out all the android directories, rebooted and redownloaded everythign from scratch. Now it won't run at all. I've clearly got something in an unhappy state, but I've cleaned up all the directories and no remanants seem to be running I've rebooted.... I've missed somethign I just can't figure out what. Paul

• MySQL performance - 100Mb ethernet vs 1Gb ethernet

  Hi All I've just started a new job and noticed that the analysts computers are connected to the network at 100Mbps. The ODBC queries we run against the MySQL server can easily return 500MB+ and it seems at times when the servers are under high load the DBAs kill low priority jobs as they are taking too long to run. My question is this... How much of this server time is spent executing the request, and how much time is spent returning the data to the client? Could the query speeds be improved by upgrading the network connections to 1Gbps? (Updated for the why): The database in question was built to accomodate reporting needs and contains massive amounts of data. We usually work with subsets of this data at a granular level in external applications such as SAS or Excel, hence the reason for the large amounts of data being transmitted. The queries are not poorly structured - they are very simple and the appropriate joins/indexes etc are being used. I've removed 'query' from the Title of the post as I realised this question is more to do with general MySQL performance rather than query related performance. I was kind of hoping that someone with a Gigabit connection may be able to actually quantify some results for me here by running a query that returns a decent amount of data, then they could limit their connection speed to 100Mb and rerun the same query. Hopefully this could be done in an environment where loads are reasonably stable so as not to skew the results. If ethernet speed can improve the situation I wanted some quantifiable results to help argue my case for upgrading the network connections. Thanks Rob

To avoid multiple inheritance ambiguity problems (so I thought), I used virtual inheritance: class NewDriver : public Driver, public virtual Plugin, public virtual CmdObject But then, in the implementation of a virtual method in NewDriver, I tried to call the Mgr::RegisterPlugin method that takes a Plugin*, and I got this: ".\NewDriver.cpp", line 89: cc0286: error: base class "Plugin" is ambiguous if (!m_pMgr->RegisterPlugin(this)) How is the this pointer ambiguous, and how do I resolve it? • Creating a multi-step process with mysql and php

  Hi, I am working on a script which allows users to create a stepped process. The steps will consist of sending visitors to urls where they will fill out a form then be directed to the next step the user has created. Each user can create as many steps as they wish and the url for each step will be unique. I am not sure if I am doing this in the correct/most efficient way so I have a few questions about this. Before I begin here is a simple version of my table structure: step_id user_id step_url step_order 1 1 example.com?step=1 1 2 2 test.com?step=1 1 3 1 example.com?step=3 2 A visitor will be directed to step_url: example.com?step=1 by user_id: 1 On this page there will be a form which contains a hidden field with the value of the step_id like this: <input type="hidden" name="step_id" value="1"> Once the visitor has filled out this form it will be processed by my script at a url similar to: http://mysite.com/form-process.php Once the form has been submitted I then need to direct the visitor to the next step my user has created. I would currently do this using code similar to this: SELECT step_url FROM table WHERE step_order='$current_step_order'+1 Here are my questions about this: Is this the best most efficient way to accomplish this? • Android: ListActivity design - changing the content of the List Adapter

  Hi, I would like to write a rather simple content application which displays a list of textual items (along with a small pic). I have a standard menu in which each menu item represents a different category of textual items (news, sports, leisure etc.). Pressing a menu item will display a list of textual items of this category. Now, having a separate ListActivity for each category seems like an overkill (or does it?..) Naturally, it makes much more sense to use one ListActivity and replace the data of its adapter when each category is loaded. My concern is when "back" is pressed. The adapter is loaded with items of the current category and now I need to display list of the previous category (and enable clicking on list items too...). Since I have only one activity - I thought of backup and load mechanism in onPause() and onResume() functions as well as making some distinction whether these function are invoked as a result of a "new" event (menu item selected) or by a "back" press. This seems very cumbersome for such a trivial usage... Am I missing something here? Thanks, Rob

• How do I debug a crash when I run my garbage-collected app in Rosetta?

I don't have access to a physical PowerPC machine so I am trying to use Rosetta to confirm that the PowerPC portion of the app works correctly. • Newbie question about Java

  Okay, I know that Java is a language but somebody has asked me if they can write a web application to interface in with a web app I've written in ASP.NET. I'm implementing a web service to serve up an XML so it's pretty language agnostic. However, I'm not 100% sure whether going down the Java route makes a lot of sense. I was kind of expecting PHP or ASP.NET server side code with maybe some Ajax/JavaScript or maybe a heavier client JavaScript program using JScript. Could some kind sole explain the basic Java environment when it comes with webapps. I've inferred the following - am I barking up the right tree? Java when run like ASP.NET is called JSP JavaBeans is a bit like the .NET framework, i.e. it's a library of re-usable components Java EE is a bit like ASP.NET in that it's a framework for building web pages on a server Java can also run on the client but it needs the Java VM installing When running Java on the client, can you use JavaBeans and is there a framework? Can it also use JScript? I don't think so as JScript is JavaScript library. Whilst running Java on the server would be okay, this is a relatively small application and therefore Java sounds like a bit of overkill. PHP or ASP.NET feels a better fit. But I don't think they should go down the Java applet in the browser and it adds complexity that's not needed. Thanks, Rob.

• Windows Azure WebRole stuck in a deployment loop

  I've been struggling with this one for a couple of days now. My current Windows Azure WebRole is stuck in a loop where the status keeps changing between Initializing, Busy, Stopping and Stopped. It never goes live, and I can can never see the website as a result. The WebRole is an "out of the box" MVC 2 application with Copy Local set to true on the Mvc dll and I haven't even tried hooking up a storage or WorkerRole yet, and there is nothing really happening inside the Start method that I can see would crash. I've really tried going back to basics to ensure nothing can complicate the process and the website launches without a problem on the Dev Fabric and yes it looks just like the standard "Home", "About" MVC app - just can't get it running in the cloud! Funny thing is, a few days ago, this exact package worked on the staging area in the cloud, and I could even see it in the browser - but could never get it swapped over to production, so I deleted everything and started from scratch, and now I can't even get it running on staging... Does anyone have any ideas on what I could do to diagnose this problem myself because since logging this problem on the forums 2 days ago, there has been no improvement or feedback. • Error Log states that I have MySQL connect error, yet script runs fine

  Hello All, First, thanks for all the help I've received so far from StackOverflow. I've learned much. Once again, I'm posing a rudimentary question that I've searched on, but cannot find the exact answer to. Here or on PHP.net. It's sort of like what this guy asked, but not exactly: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/288603/mysql-throwing-query-error-yet-finishing-query-just-fine-why So, I saw my errorlog ballooning up when I checked my site directory and opened to notice that a bunch of errors have been recorded since I wrote this new Admin area. I know something is obviously awry with my scripting for the error to be thrown, but the weird thing is, the script actually runs through and pulls all the data I need without breaking. The log contains: PHP Warning: mysql_query() [function.mysql-query]: Access denied for user 'someuser'@'localhost' (using password: NO) in /home/mysite/adminconsole.php on line 15 I don't get that because that very line is where I setup my connection... the exact same way I do it everywhere else on the site with no problem. • Why isn't UIScrollView always calling viewDidLoad on subviews?

  I'm a bit confused on the behaviour of UIScrollView as it pertains to subview loading. In my app, I lazily load subviews into my scroller. Most of the time, -viewDidLoad is called on the subview immediately after adding it the UIScrollView. There is one scenario where it isn't being called. At the 'end' of my scroll view I have a "please wait" view. When it is fully scrolled on to the page, it fades out, I add the subview and -viewDidLoad is not called. In this case, when I remove the last subview and add another subview, I get nothing. I've tried [scrollView setNeedsDisplay] and [scrollView setNeedsLayout] to no avail. I've also sent the same messages to the view I just added - no dice. Does anyone have any insight here? Many people have many questions about -viewDidLoad and I haven't been able to find one related to direct subviews inside of a scrollview. Or I have and I haven't realized it :) Thanks in advance! • how to insert multiple rows using cakephp

  In the cakePHP project I'm building, I want to insert a defined number of identical records. These will serve as placeholders records that will have additional data added later. Each record will insert the IDs taken from two belongs_to relationships as well as two other string values. What I want to do is be able to enter a value for the number of records I want created, which would equate to how many times the data is looped during save. What I don't know is: 1) how to setup a loop to handle a set number of inserts 2) how to define a form field in cakePHP that only sets the number of records to create. What I've tried is the following: function massAdd() { $inserts_required = 1; while ($inserts_required <= 10) { $this->Match->create(); $this->Match->save($this->data); echo $inserts_required++; } $brackets = $this->Match->Bracket->find('list'); $this->set(compact('brackets')); } What happens is: 1) at the top of the screen, above the doc type, the string 12345678910 is displayed, this is displayed on screen 2) a total of 11 records are created, and only the last record has the values passed in the form. I don't know why 11 records as opposed to 10 are created, and why only the last records has the entered form data? As always, your help and direction is appreciated. -Paul

• Help with MySQL query - Product orders report without duplicate shipping charges

  Hello, I have an issue creating a custom report for an e-commerce store running on osCommerce. The client wants the report to have the following columns: Date, Order ID, Product Class, Product Price, Product Tax, Shipping, Order Total The criteria for generating the report are Date Range and Product Class (Textbooks for example) The client wants the report to list each Textbook purchased on its own line. Orders with multiple textbooks would display a separate line for each Textbook in the order. I have it all working except for one part: the shipping amount is order-specific (based on the order total), not product-specific, and is displaying for each product. I need it to display only for the first product of each order, so it is not counted more than once. • Passing custom Python objects to nosetests

  I am attempting to re-organize our test libraries for automation and nose seems really promising. My question is, what is the best strategy for passing Python objects into nose tests? Our tests are organized in a testlib with a bunch of modules that exercise different types of request operations. Something like this: testlib \-testmoda \-testmodb \-testmodc In some cases the test modules (i.e. testmoda) is nothing but test_something(), test_something2() functions while in some cases we have a TestModB class in testmob with the test_anotherthing1(), test_anotherthing2() functions. The cool thing is that nose easily finds both. Most of those test functions are request factory stuff that can easily share a single connection to our server farm. Thus we do a lot of test_something1(cnn), TestModB.test_anotherthing2(cnn), etc. Currently we don't use nose, instead we have a hodge-podge of homegrown driver scripts with hard-coded lists of tests to execute. Each of those driver scripts creates its own connection object. Maintaining those scripts and the connection minutia is painful. I'd like to take free advantage of nose's beautiful discovery functionality, passing in a connection object of my choosing. Thanks in advance! Rob P.S. The connection objects are not pickle-able. :(

• IE performance issues with offsetHeight and offsetWidth

  I have a site that grabs the response text from an AJAX call and does 'innerHTML' on a div that is going to contain it. After I do the 'innerHTML' I process the DIV by traversing the whole hierarchy of nodes and grabbing their [offsetWidth/offsetHeight] to do some operations with it. Why not css style width/height? because sometimes those values are not available since I don't control what is coming from the AJAX response, plus I want the real box dimensions including borders/scrolls/padding. On large injections (let's say 7,000 new DOM elements) IE takes way longer time than FF/Safari just to get this [offsetWidth/offsetHeight], actually if I wasn't doing injection but just render the contents of the HTML in the browser and processing it, it would be much faster. But that is not an option since I have to inject it on a div that will contain it. Anybody has deal with this kind of issue before? is there an alternative to innerHTML, I have try using documentFragment to inject and process and the move it to the div and still I don't see much gain. How can I get the values that are available with [offsetWidth/offsetHeight]? Thanks a bunch for any suggestions. Paul

• How do I run a command as a different user from a root cronjob?

  I seem to be stuck between an NFS limitation and a Cron limitation. So I've got root cron (on RHEL5) running a shell script that, among other things, needs to rsync some files over an NFS mount. And the files on the NFS mount are owned by the apache user with mode 700, so only the apache user can run the rsync command -- running as root yields a permission error (NFS being a rare case, apparently, where the root user is not all-powerful?) When I just want to run the rsync by hand, I can use "sudo -u apache rsync ..." But sudo no workie in cron -- it says "sudo: sorry, you must have a tty to run sudo". I don't want to run the whole script as apache (i.e. from apache's crontab) because other parts of the script do require root -- it's just that one command that needs to run as apache. And I would really prefer not to change the mode on the files, as that will involve significant changes to other applications. There's gotta be a way to accomplish "sudo -u apache" from cron?? thanks! rob

  Does anybody know if it is possible to return an associative array as the result of an Oracle function, if so do you have any examples? I have an Oracle package which contains an associative array declaration as defined below: TYPE EVENTPARAM IS TABLE OF NUMBER INDEX BY BINARY_INTEGER; This is then used in a stored procedure outside the package as follows: v_CompParams areva_interface.eventparam; The intention is to store an associative array of strings in the variable v_CompParams, returned from a Parse function in another package. The definition for which is as follows: PACKAGE STRING_MANIP IS TYPE a_array IS TABLE OF NUMBER INDEX BY BINARY_INTEGER; FUNCTION Parse (v_string VARCHAR2, v_delim VARCHAR2) RETURN a_array; FUNCTION RowCount(colln IN a_array) RETURN NUMBER; END; The code which implements this is: v_CompParams := STRING_MANIP.PARSE(v_CompID,v_Delim); Unfortunately it doesn't work, I get the error 'PLS-00382: expression is of wrong type'. I foolishly assumed, that since a_array derives from the same source Oracle type as the variable v_CompParams, that there would be no problem casting between them. Any help much appreciated.   Hello, I'm trying to migrate my app from PHP and RDBMS (MySQL) to Google App Engine and have a hard time figuring out data model and relationships in JDO. In my current app I use a lot of JOIN queries like: SELECT users.name, comments.comment FROM users, comments WHERE users.user_id = comments.user_id AND users.email = '[email protected]' As I understand, JOIN queries are not supported in this way so the only(?) way to store data is using unowned relationships and "foreign" keys. There is a documentation regarding that, but no useful examples. • Windows Mobile : How to bind dropdown's selectedvalue to a column in table A and the list data to a

  Hi, I am trying to learn the basics of Windows Mobile development against SQL CE and have come across a basic problem. I have two tables. One called Customers that stores customer info and has an identity column called ID as the primary key. The other table is called Orders which has a column called CustomerID (the FK constraint is present). I have added a DataSet to the project that contains both tables and have autogenerated the edit/view forms. This has produced a text control for the CustomerID column in the Order table for the new/edit form and I deleted it and replaced it with a dropdown list. Then, using the 'Advanced' databinding options (in Properties) I set the datasource of the list to the Customers table setting the value to the ID field and the text to the CustomerName field. I then set the SelectedValue of the list box to the CustomerID field of the Orders dataset. So far so good. When I run the app in the emulator and view the 'New' form for Orders the Customer dropdown is indeed populated with a list of customer names and I can select one and happily create a new order successfully. This is confirmed when I see the order appear in the Orders Grid form. However, when I then click on the order in the grid and then select 'Edit' the order loads but the dropdown always shows the first customer in the list and doesn't seem to bind the SelectedValue to the Orders dataset CustomerID field. Now I am an ASP.NET guy and normally hand craft the DAL and it's binding to the UI so I'm not entirely sure where to look to investigate what is going wrong here as this is all generated code. I am sure it is something very trivial but any pointers would be appreciated. My gut feeling is that the SelectedValue and the Customers.CustomerID values do not match for some reason? • Multiple SessionFactories in Windows Service with NHibernate

  Hi all, I have a Webapp which connects to 2 DBs (one core, the other is a logging DB). I must now create a Windows service which will use the same business logic/Data access DLLs. However when I try to reference 2 session factories in the Service App and call the factory.GetCurrentSession() method, I get the error message "No session bound to current context". • Is A Web App Feasible For A Heavy Use Data Entry System?

  Looking for opinions on this, we're working on a project that is essentially a data entry system for a production line. Heavy data input by users who normally work in Excel or other thick client data systems. We've been told (as a consequence) that we have to develop this as a thick client using .NET. Our argument was to develop as a web app, as it resolves a lot of issues and would be easier to write and maintain. Their argument against the web is that (supposedly) the web is not ready yet for a heavy duty data entry system, and that the web in a browser does not offer the speed, responsiveness, and fluid experience for the end-user that a thick client can (citing things such as drag and drop, rapid auto-entry and data navigation, etc.) Personally, I think that with good form design and JQuery/AJAX, a web app could do everything a thick client does just as well, and they just don't know what they're talking about. The irony is that a thick client has to go to a lot more effort to manage the deployment and connectivity back to the central data server than a web app would need to do, so in terms of speed I would expect a web app to be faster. What are the thoughts of those out there? Are there any technologies currently in production use that modern data entry systems are being developed as web apps in? Appreciate any feedback.
