  • What unix text editor should I learn? [closed]

    - by sixtyfootersdude
Maybe this should be a community wiki page... What unix text editor should I learn? My co-workers mostly use vi. I am thinking about vim because the syntax highlighting seems appealing. Is there any advantage to vi over vim? I know that there are a lot of emacs fans out there too? Is there any reason to learn a specific editor? Can you point me to some good learning references (for your suggested editor)? Thanks!

  • Learn mp3 format and audio signal processing

    - by Shankhoneer Chakrovarty
I am trying to learn the following things: How mp3 file looks like internally? I found this: http://mpgedit.org/mpgedit/mpeg_format/MP3Format.html but it seems old. Is there any recent changes to the format? I couldnt find any. How to open a mp3 file in java and look for bytes? I tried using audiostream but I am getting a lot of zeros and signed short integers which nowhere resemble the header/body format as mentioned in the above link. Am I wrong in interpreting the bytes? How to get amplitude, frequency and pitch of a mp3 file? No idea. Can you please suggest some book or tutorial? Can you please help me in getting the solution for the above questions? I am sorry if some questions appear to be naive, I am a just begun to learn mp3. Thanks

Site which updates new only css and pure css (no client side and server side) techniques, articles on daily or weekly basis. Or you can suggest any pure css rss feeds. My aim is to learn one new technique/trick daily. I know some well known blogs but do you know any other not well known but good blogs/sites. I want to know some hidden treasures.

  • How to learn more XMPP/Jabber command

    - by user359277
Hi, I am using ejabberd as a chatting server now. And I am writing a client to chat and register new user. Right now, I know some of the protocol to register a new account, like sending the following command to register new user: <iq type="set"><query xmlns="jabber:iq:register"><username>wfwfewegwegwewefg</username><password>wfwefwefwefwef</password></query></iq> My question is: I want to learn more command/protocol to talk to the server. So where can I learn more? For example, How can I ask the server if the user name exists or not. How can I ask the server to unregister a user. What is the key word I should search for? Should I search for Jabber XMPP protocol or what? Thanks

  • A good F# codebase to learn from

    - by Lucas
Hi all, I've been teaching myself F# for a while now. I've read Programming F# by Chris Smith (great book) and I've written a few small scripts for getting the job done here and there. But IMO the best way to learn a new programming language—and more importantly, the idioms that come with it—is to read a good open source codebase written in that language. Naturally, writing code in that language is crucial, but in the beginning, you're basically struggling with your own ignorance about how things should be done. You could perform certain tasks one way or the other, but it takes experience to realize the flaws and virtues of each. Even after you've gotten a firm grasp of how things work, reading the code of people who have an even firmer one helps a great deal. Most would agree that the most insightful parts of any learn-a-programming-language book are the code examples, and reading a well-written open source codebase is the next level of that. So are there any out there for F#?

  • Web Designer looking to learn back-end programming...

    - by Tabetha Moe
Hello, my name is Tabetha and I have a question... I am a web designer, but I always find that while designing the layout and coding the design I come up with great ideas for websites. I would like to know where I need to start in order to learn back-end programming not only for the knowledge, but also for the challenge of it. I have searched online but can't seem to find the information I am looking for. If anyone can give me a simple, straight-forward "this is what language you need to learn" answer, or perhaps guide me in the right direction I would appreciate it ten-fold. I am a complete noob when it comes to this, so even the most basic information is probably a pearl of wisdom for me. :)

  • What is a good balance for having developers learn at work

    - by Mel
So now I am the manager. One of the things I always promised myself I would do is have the other developers focus on learning new stuff. In fact I even want to force them to read a couple books that really helped me learn to program. However now I am also accountable for the product getting finished. I have this vision of everyone reading books instead of working and me getting fired. What is the best way to work learning into the developers schedules, especially for the ones that just don't care to learn. How much time should be spent on learning in a work week?

  • A server-side language to Learn

    - by Roth
I'm a graphic designer, with experience in print design. In fact, I'm working on digital prepress since 4 years ago. I'm doing a course on web design right now, although I have been studying it on my own for a while, online. So, my question is, what kind of server-side language do I need to learn? I'm feel comfortable with HTML, CSS, and Javascript, even with preprocessors like SASS and LESS, but server-side scripting becomes a nightmare to me. So, what kind of language is necessary to learn? Any book or resource to that specific language? Thanks a lot for your answers.

  • What Is The Best Scripting Language To Learn?

    - by Strider
I have been learning C and C++ for sometime now. But, they do not allow me to do a lot of things like writing a script/program to get a bunch of files from the internet easily. So, I want to learn a scripting language which is fun and which is useful for everyday chores. Which one would you recommend, and why? Other information that might be useful: References to tutorials / helpful information on how to learn the language. References to implementations of the language. Niches where you have found it to be particularly useful.
