  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Software Deployment on Active Directory - Schema Issue

    We have two servers, one running Windows Server 2003 SP2 and one running Windows Server 2008 R2. Both servers have their own versions of Group Policy Management (1.0.2 on 2003 and 6.0.0.1 on 2008). We are wanting to migrate everything over to the newer 2008 server, including software deployment. However, when I try to add a new software package using a .msi file, I get the following error: "The schema for the software installation data in the Active Directory does not match the required schema." I have tried two separate software packages and get the same error on the 2008 server. However, when I do the same on the 2003 server, it adds the software package without any problems. The .msi files I am using are up-to-date - one is the most recent version of Google Chrome. Is this problem caused by the different versions of the OS, or the Group Policy Management program? How do we "upgrade" our Active Directory to allow software deployment on the 2008 server? Thanks.

    I need to set-up Lync on a Server 2008 machine. The problem is that Lync cannot be set up on a Domain Controller. That means I need to have one Server 2008 that's a domain controller and another that's Server 2008 running Lync. I figured the best way would be hosting it on a single machine, using virtual machines. I installed Server 2008, but now my question is this. Do I add two virtual machines (Domain Controller and Lync), or do I only add one virtual machine for Lync, and the 'parent' Server 2008 can act as a domain controller?

    I am using VS 2008 Team Suite and SQL Server 2008 in my development environment. I am deploying to a shared-host website with shared-host SQL Server 2005. I want to push changes from my development environment to my production host. I tried using Data | Schema Compare... and it reports to me that it does not support SQL Server 2008. What do people use for this (Besides Red-Gate tools - I use those at my day job, and they rock...this is a volunteer thing for my son's school)? I am looking for something very inexpensive if not free.

  • SSRS 2008 Interactive Sorting in Sub-Report not working as expected

    I have a (parent) report that has a list. The details group of this list contains one sub-report. So basically if the list has 10 records (rows) the sub-report is executed 10 times. The problem seems to be with interactive sorting in the Sub-Report. It has 4 columns with interactive sorting enabled. When I run the parent report and try to sort columns SSRS "remembers" the previous sort column and sorts by multiple columns at the same time. For example if I sort by Col A then click to sort by Col B, SSRS will preserve the sorting of Col A (and the direction) and then apply the sorting to Col B. However I simply want to sort by Col B and do not want to Col A to be part of the sort. When I try this directly with the sub-report everything works as expected. Any ideas why this is happening?

    Warning Message: Saving changes is not permitted. The changes you have made require the following tables to be dropped and re-created. You have either made changes to a table that can't be re-created or enabled the option Prevent saving changes that require the table to be re-created. This is by design and can be quickly fixed in Management Studio by unchecking a property. To fix this in Management Studio, go to Tools - Options then go to the Designer Page and uncheck "Prevent saving changes that require table re-creation"

  • Move database from SQL Server 2012 to 2008

    I have a database on a SQL Sever 2012 instance which I would like to copy to a 2008 server. The 2008 server cannot restore backups created by a 2012 server (I have tried). I cannot find any options in 2012 to create a 2008 compatible backup. Am I missing something? Is there an easy way to export the schema and data to a version-agnostic format which I can then import into 2008? The database does not use any 2012 specific features. It contains tables, data and stored procedures. Here is what I have tried so far: I tried "tasks" - "generate scripts" on the 2012 server, and I was able to generate the schema (including stored procedures) as a sql script. This didn't include any of the data, though. After creating that schema on my 2008 machine, I was able to open the "Export Data" wizard on the 2012 machine, and after configuring the 2012 as source machine and the 2008 as target machine, I was presented with a list of tables which I could copy. I selected all my tables (300+), and clicked through the wizard. Unfortunately it spends ages generating its scripts, then fails with errors like "Failure inserting into the read-only column 'FOO_ID'". I also tried the "Copy Database Wizard", which claimed to be able to copy "from 2000 or later to 2005 or later". It has two modes: 1) "detach and attach", which failed with error: Message: Index was outside the bounds of the array. StackTrace: at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.PropertyBag.SetValue(Int32 index, Object value) ... at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.DataFile.get_FileName() 2) SQL Management Object Method which failed with error "Cannot read property IsFileStream.This property is not available on SQL Server 7.0."

  • Referencing SQL Server 2008 R2 SMO from Visual Studio 2010

    Hello. We read a number of things about referencing SQL Server SMO from Visual Studio but still don't have the definite answers we need. So, here it goes... A number of years ago we created a C# application using Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005. In that application, we added .NET references to a number of SQL Server SMO objects, and everything worked fine. Those references were: Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo GAC 9.0.242.0 Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo GAC 9.0.242.0 Microsoft.SqlServer.SqlEnum GAC 9.0.242.0 We have now migrated to Visual Studio 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2. However, when we try to reference those same SMO objects for SQL Server 2008 R2, they don't appear in the .NET references tab. We're wanting to reference the SQL Server 2008 R2 version of those same SMO assemblies for our upgraded C# application. On our development machines, we have SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer installed with all options, including the SDK such that the assemblies are found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\SDK\Assemblies. So, my first questions are: Are we supposed to do file references to the SMO assemblies instead of .NET references in Visual Studio 2010 w/ SQL Server 2008 R2? Or, is there some problem with our development machines such that the SMO assemblies are not appearing in the .NET references tab? Next, our production machines will have SQL Server 2008 R2 Workgroup installed with the client tools option selected, thus providing those same SMO assemblies in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\SDK\Assemblies. So, the next questions are: When we release to production, are we supposed to redistribute the SMO assemblies with our application? Or, will our application work on the production servers without redistributing the SMO assemblies (since the client tools/SMO assemblies have been installed)? What else????? Thanks for the help!

    Hi, We have a Windows 2008 cluster with several SQL 2008 instance. We would like to run a script that modifies 4 registry keys prior to the startup of SQL. I do not know if there is a way to have a script run through Windows 2008 clustering that does that. I have a VBS script to do it and tried to add a Generic Script to an existing cluster group, but it failed saying it could not be registered. Any ideas?

    same as in title? I have a test server with mentioned OS and my app is .net 3.5 based. I do want to know if win 2008 r2 comes with service pack 1 for .net 3.5 from the box. And does it come with .net 3.5 sp1 family update as WELL, since after I downloaded the update, the installer says I do not have software required to update. Could some win 2008 guru perhaps explain it to me? thanks luke

    Hi, I have a problem with group expressions in a list. I want to use two expressions: '=Ceiling(RowNumber(Nothing)/3)' and '=Cint(Fields!kpilevel.Value)' They work both individually, but when I insert them together only 1 works.     I am trying to generate a report using SSRS 2008. During report processing i am facing an error which states.."An error has occured during report processing .Query execution failed for dataset (datasetno).A severe error occured opn the current command.The results if any,should be discarded.Operation cancelled by user ". The datasetname for which query execution is failing is changing randomly.When I am executing those dataset queries seperately it was not throwing any errors.Sometimes I am getting my report without any failure.   • SSRS 2008 - How to hide the plus icon in a group visibility toggle cell

    I have a report that shows or hides columns in a group based on a header cell. SSRS makes this pretty easy and is kind enough to place a little plus/minus icon in the toggling cell. I want to HIDE this plus/minus icon when there is only one column of data in the subgroup, because it shows that one column by default so expanding the group doesn't do anything. This really only applies to one specific group, because all the others always have more than one column of data, so a way to hide only the icon for a specific group would be fine. JavaScript won't work (I don't think) because the client ID of the plus/minus image is generated by the report and changes with each generation. see this image for more clarity: http://imgur.com/vqaQA.png

    Hi, I have SQL reporting services configured to use a secure certificate and when I visit both Reports and ReportManager I get a 404 not found error. The reporting services logs do not contain any error information. I am a bit at a loss to know where to start to diagnose this problem, especially as SSRS is not using IIS. I created the SSL binding using the Reporting Services Configuration Manager; IP Address: (All IPv4) SSL Port: 443 Certificate: {the certicate was present in the drop down list} URL: https://mydomain:444/Reports What can I check to get this working?     Above is how my report looks, the part in yellow in hidden, and is only shown when the user clicks the + icon on the [name]. the result is basically the percentage difference from the Past [X] - [TERM] i.e there is a dropdown with, [weeks, months, days, hours] and a textbox of qty. so choosing qty = 4 and term = weeks will delivery a result set spread over 4 weeks based on the parent result sets date range and name ID I wish to populate here the number of rows, dependant on the value set by the user and the data will be from a dataset. Is it possible to dynamically add more sub rows ( like on row data bound ) if my first row is ID 123 [name], is it possible to send this value [123] to a dataset in order that all subrows are only relevant to the name with ID of 123? this is my first bash at SSRS so please no half cut answers, that just lead to more questions about the answer given :-) if this makes sense.     I am trying to perform a database attach upgrade to SharePoint Foundation 2010. At this point I am trying to attach the content database to a Web application by using Windows Powershell: Mount-SPContentDatabase -Name <DatabaseName> -DatabaseServer <ServerName> -WebApplication <URL> [-Updateuserexperience] I am following the directions from this TechNet article: Attach databases and upgrade to SharePoint Foundation 2010.  When I go to mount the content database I am receiving this error: Mount-SPContentDatabase : Could not connect to [DATABASE_SERVER] using integrated security: SQL server at [DATABASE_SERVER] has an unsupported version 10.0.2531.0. Please refer to “http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=165761” for information on the minimum required SQL Server versions and how to download them. At first this did not make sense because the default SharePoint Foundation 2010 website was running just fine.  But then I realized that the default SharePoint Foundation site runs off of SQL Server Express and that I had just installed SQL Server Web Edition (since the database is greater than 4GB) and restored the database to this version of SQL Server. Checking the documentation link above I see that SharePoint Server 2010 requires a 64-bit edition of SQL Server with the minimum required SQL Server versions as follows: SQL Server 2008 Express Edition Service Pack 1, version number 10.0.2531 SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 cumulative update package 3, version number 9.00.4220.00 SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 cumulative update package 2, version number 10.00.2714.00 The version of SQL Server 2008 Web Edition with Service Pack 1 (the version I installed on this machine) is 10.0.2531.0. SELECT @@VERSION: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (SP1) - 10.0.2531.0 (X64)   Mar 29 2009 10:11:52   Copyright (c) 1988-2008 Microsoft Corporation  Web Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.1 <X64> (Build 7600: ) (VM) But I had to read the article several times since the minimum version number for SQL Server Express is 10.0.2531.0.  At first I thought I was good with the version of SQL Server 2008 Web that I had installed, also 10.0.2531.0.  But then I read further to see that there is a cumulative update (hotfix) for SQL Server 2008 SP1 (NOT the Express edition) that is required for SharePoint 2010 and will bump the version number to 10.0.2714.00. So the solution was to install the Cumulative update package 2 for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 on my SQL Server 2008 Web Edition to allow SharePoint 2010 to work with SQL Server 2008 (other than the SQL Server 2008 Express version).   • SBS 2008 BPA Warnings After Migration From SBS 2003

    We just finished a we-know-just-enough-to-be-dangerous migration from SBS 2003 to SBS 2008, and things seem to have gone relatively smoothly. After running the SBS 2008 Best Practices Analyzer on the destination server, we've got three warning messages, and I can't tell if they're important or not. First, the easy one: SMTP Port (TCP 25 Status): The Edgetransport.exe process should listen on SMTP port 25, but that port is owned by the process. I don't think that this one is a big deal--e-mail is flowing through the SMTP connector. Since there are two spaces between "the" and "process," I'm assuming that for some reason BPA just couldn't figure out the owning process name and this is just some sloppy programming when displaying the message. (Indeed, on subsequent runs of the BPA this message goes away, and other times it comes back.) Now, two more scary sounding ones: No DNS name server records: There are no DNS name server (NS) resource records in the _msdcs sub-domain in the forward lookup zone for Windows SBS 2008. and, similarly, No DNS name server records: There are no DNS name server (NS) resource records in the _msdcs zone for Windows SBS 2008. Now for these two, everything appears to be functioning correctly--but I'm assuming this is a weird state as a result of the SBS 2003 to 2008 migration. Can anyone provide any pointers on how to fix it, or whether or not it can be safely ignored? Thanks!

  • Exchange 2003 SP2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Domain Controllers

    I'm looking at adding two Windows Server 2008 R2 Domain Controllers into our Windows Server 2003 domain to support our Exchange 2003 SP2 server and replace a retiring Windows Server 2003 Server. Our Domain and Forest functional levels are currently Windows Server 2003, which supports domain controller operating systems (Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2003) according to the "Appendix of Functional Level Features" on Technet . So there should not be an issue other than running adprep /forestprep and adprep /domain.... right!? But, according to the Exchange Server Supportability Matrix, Windows Server 2008 R2 Active Directory Servers are not supported as global catalog servers or domain controllers in a Exchange 2003 SP2 environment!!!??? This was a shock to me... How can Windows Server 2008 R2 be a DC for a Windows Server 2003 domain and forest, but not communicate with an Exchange 2003 SP2 server? Hopefully, I'm not the first to see this issue (or maybe I am), but I know a lot of Exchange 2003 admins will not be happy if there is not a work around... or is Microsoft trying to push everyone automatically to Exchange 2010...

    Has anyone successfully used AD authentication using the latest version of FreeNAS with Windows 2008 R2 domain controllers? I wanted to use FreeNAS to host files and share them via CIFS but I couldn't make FreeNAS authenticate with a Windows 2008 R2 domain controller. Ultimately, the new CIFS shares will be referenced in the DFS namespace that we already have running on Windows 2008 R2 servers. Any tip you can share with me?
