• Internet stopped working after aircrack install (can still connect to my router). Suggestions?

  I'm sure I did something dumb during the install for aircrack, but I have no clue what. Like I said, I can connect to my router (not trying to crack, simply logging into it), I just can't get internet access. To make this more interesting, the machine is dual booted and when I log into Windows I have zero issues. I feel like some driver may have been messed up in the process, but I'm not sure if that's a reasonable assumption or how exactly to check that. Also, can't revert to backup as there are none. Suggestions on how to trouble-shoot would be appreciated. EDIT: Hard-wiring to the wall I can get internet access on the Ubuntu side... PS- I know this is a stretch as far as fitting the Ubuntu section, but no other stackoverflow sites seemed to fit better.

• Can/should one record unstructured suggestions and feedback in an issue tracker?

  I'd like to advocate the use of issue-tracking software within an organisation that currently does not use it. But there's one aspect of their situation for which I'm unsure of what to suggest: their projects frequently receive informal verbal feedback or casual comments in meetings or in passing from a wide group of interested parties, and all this information needs to be recorded. Most of these messages are noise, but they're vital to record and share with developers for two reasons: Good suggestions often come out of this process. It can be necessary to have evidence of clients' comments when they forget previous instructions or change their mind. Is this the sort of information that should be stored in an issue-tracking system, or kept apart in a separate solution? Are there issue-tracking systems that have particularly good support for this sort of unstructured information?

• "A hard disk may be failing" , but no additional info via gdu-notification-deamon (suggestions?)

  Got this message after logging in: A hard disk may be failing One or more hard disk report health problems. Click the icon to get more information. On WUBI and 10.04, there was no icon to click, and clicking on made the message go away. After rebooting, the message did not display again. I've got everything on all my hard drives in duplicate, so not super worried about a disk failure, though I am wondering why the message had no info on which disk it thought had problems. Suggestions?

• Is Ubuntu running well on an usb hdd? Need suggestions

  Dear Linux and Ubuntu pros, I have here a company notebook, and because the hdd is full encrypted I cannot install an extra partition for another system that I would like to use in my free time. And I really need another system, because this crap windows here with that much of antivirus, antispyware, anti-whatever on it is sooo slow and anoying. What can I do? I could use an external usb hdd with another system. Because I would like to handle big files and so on, I dont want to use an sub stick. An usb 2.5hdd + ubuntu is what I think the best option. Here are my question: Do I have to note something? Is Ubuntu running well on an external hdd? Do I have big performance problems (because of the usb hdd)? Should I buy a very fast hdd for much money or is it not that important? Any suggestions? Thank you :)

• Need suggestions on how to create a website with an encrypted database.

  Hi guys, I want to create a website where a user enters content (say a couple of sentences) which eventually gets stored in a backend database (maybe MySQL). But before the content leaves the client side, I want it to get encrypted using something on client like maybe javascript. The data will travel over the web encrypted, but more importantly, will also be permanently stored in the backend database encrypted. Is JavaScript appropriate to use for this? Would 256 bit encryption take too long? Also, how do you query an encrypted database later on if you want to pull down the content that a user may have submitted over the past 2 months? I'm looking for tips, suggestions and any pointers you guys may have in how to go about learning about and accomplishing this. Thanks!

  Hi there, so I've been working on developing an idea for an application that I think has the potential to be successful, however after some initial research I've discovered that at least part of my ideas are covered by a patent out there, the patent in particular is held by a really large company (I don't want to give away specifics for fear I'd draw their attention for sure). I'm debating a few options: 1) Develop patents around my ideas that don't conflict and maybe approach the company in question for a license exchange 2) Just approach them for a license outright 3) Just develop around it anyways and hope for the best :-p What have other people done in these situations? Are companies generally willing to grant patent licenses? Are they willing to grant them at reasonable prices? Thoughts?

• Any suggestions how it would be good to promote software in a small company ?

  Ok, I know if I am Red hat or other giant and offer some support etc. I can be profitable, in fact, Red Hat is doing quite well. However, what about a small company where I create a small program. e.g. an instant messenger for a windows or linux (just as an illustration) and I want to sell it. But how can I sell it if it is free and everybody can download it? Any advice? I like the idea of FSF by Richard Stallman, however I am missing the way how to sell my software under GNU/GPL licence. Any advice, how can I solve this problem? Any profitable small business software developers around with their opinion? Any links or names of small companies taht I can look at and study their model of business?

• Suggestions for a Live chat software on websites for customer support?

  Recommendations needed. We want to get in touch with customers via live chat. Requirements: chat window customisable to mingle with website theme (colors etc) preferably the window should be within webpage and not only pop-out/popup. ease of use by customer minimally intrusive should have triggers/Alerts to backend side. for ex: user is unable to fill-up signup form or something, we should be able to offer help to user and this chat window automatically shows to user. What is the cost ? UPDATE: After R&D we also narrowed down to comm100 and liveperson, and we will go with comm100. LP is best commerical soln. but comm100 is a good free soln. We go with comm100 as starting point. But it gives out exceptions alerts sometimes in the dashboard. Can it be configured for chat invitations triggered on certain conditions. Currently only a timebased trigger is available. Any other major difference between these two ?

The new site have to follow the structure of the old site that requires the presence of a vertical main menu in the left column that contains the link to all the statics pages in the site. • I can write code...but can't design well. Any suggestions?

  I feel that I am good at writing code in bits and pieces, but my designs really suck. The question is how do I improve my designs (in order to become a better designer). I think schools and colleges do a good job of teaching people as to how to become good at mathematical problem solving, but lets admit the fact that most programs taught at school are generally around 1000 - 2000 lines long, which means that it is mostly an academic exercise and no way reflects the complexity of real world software (a few hundred thousand to millions of lines of code). This is where I believe that even projects like topcoder/project euler also won't be of much help, they might sharpen your mathematical problem solving ability - but you might become a theoretician programmer; someone who is more interested in the nice, clean stuff, and someone who is utterly un-interested in the day to day mundane and hairy stuff that most application programmers deal with. So my question is how do I improve my design skills? That is the ability to design small/medium scale applications that will go into a few thousand of lines of code? How can I learn design skills that would help me build a better html editor kit, or some graphics program like gimp?

I did find some useful informations that aren't available in a quick, light mobile format and I added to my site: teathers' programming, pharmacy shops open at night, twitter account embedding... have you got any other suggestion? I was thinking about facebook oauth to add some "social" feel, but I woluld like to avoid cloning fb information/features, just add some other cool addictive thing. • Migrating master-slave MySQL database servers to 2 new servers, any tips or suggestions?

  I'm setting up 2 new database servers that will be replacing a current master-slave setup. All boxes are running / will be running MySQL on RHEL. Our current naming conventions: db1 - master database db2 - slave (using MySQL replication) db01 - new master db02 - new slave We need to get db01 to be the new master with db02 as the new slave. What is the best way to migrate db1 and db2 to db01 and db02? db1 and db2 are running in a production setting and we need to minimize all downtime; db1 has roughly 30GB of data in the database. Any suggestions or tips on how to migrate to our new servers would be much appreciated.

• Web and email host migration - Limitations and suggestions to make the process as easy as possible.

  I developed a website for a friend of mine to replace his current 'all inclusive' provider (website creation, updating, web hosting, email hosting). I've already paid for a hosting service which currently houses the website which I have created. I need to cancel the previous service provider to get the domain migrated to the new host, however I will still need to transfer or recreate all of the email addresses that everyone in his company had previously. Is there an easy way migrate email accounts (still linked to the same domain) while migrating to a different host? Will any methods allow all users to retain their archived emails and folder structures? What is the process to do so. Because the current provider is a rather large website development and hosting company, I will have limited access to the data they have stored. As you can probably tell, my knowledge in this area is very limited - any/all suggestions you may have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. -Jack

  For years I have used .dmg or .sparsebundle (Encrypted and Password Protected) to safely keep home directory backups on my Mac. Now, I am looking for a similar Full Permissions/Read/Write that maintains an encrypted, and password protected file that it Tri-Platform. I'd like to have the future ability to use it on Mac OS X, Windows 7/8, and Ubuntu (current releases+). I appreciate your recommendations. Thank you. (I like mounting a DMG and having a file directory structure that can be easily maintained and organized. When done, un-mounting the file.) (I've seen Windows tools to open encrypted DMG files? and I will explore these options, but with the desire to also keep the file accessible on on three OSes, someone might have additional suggestions.)

• I'm trying to set up a LAMP server so it's totally anonymous, any suggestions?

  I'm going to set up a web service which will use the LAMP stack. One of the most important features of the site is that it should be anonymous. We thought that a cool thing will be if the server didn't made any logs that could potentially identify a user. I'm working on a web app for a news organization. They want a site to allow people to sumbit news leads and tips (text / files) to journalists. We think if we can provide good anonymity people will be more inclined to provide information. We will also teach how to use stuff like TOR as an extra precaution for whistleblowers Is this even possible? Any suggestions of obscure things we should look into?

  I am writing a web-app that uses a tagging system to organize the user's submitted reports. Part of it uses ajax to get suggestions for tags to present to the user based on the content of their report. I am looking for suggestions on how to present this information for the user. I'm not quite certain what a friendly way to do this would be. Edit: Well, most of the responses here seem to be focused on the user typing in keywords. The idea I'm trying to define here is more towards presenting the user a set of suggested keywords that they may accept or decline without having to type a tag in manually. • Looking for suggestions for hosting Windows 2000 Server in the cloud / VPS / etc?

  I have a Windows 2000 Server, currently virtualized in Hyper-V, that I would like to get running off-site as a backup (cloud, VPS, etc). You can't virtualize in EC2 and I'm fairly certain there are no Server 2000 AMI's floating about (correct me if I'm wrong!). If anyone has a recommendation on how I can get a virtualized Windows 2000 Server running in a secure, remote environment I would be grateful. As far as locations go I'd be interested in both North America as well as Australia and Europe. In a nutshell, we're ploughing our way out of a legacy codebase and this server is the last that remains of the legacy apps. However, it is still very much used by our clients. Everything is backed up each night (data, images, etc) to tape which is then taken offsite. However, in the event of a fire I would love to have a backup legacy server to point DNS records to. So while I am rebuilding from the ashes our services would already be available. It would save a lot of time and make my managers all the more happy (and that's what it's all about, riighhtt? :D) Thank you all for your suggestions. • Suggestions for cleaning up the mess after removing the "system tool" virus?

  Hi! Last night I got infected with the "System Tool" virus. For those who don't know it disallows the user from executing any software, changes the desktop, stops all security software from running, and continually requests that you buy a Trojan security software. It took me a few hours but I finally managed to remove the software. To do this I went into my Ubuntu partition and searched out files that had been created around the time that I got infected and deleted the executable. Then I went back into my W7 partition and ran an MBAM full scan, an MSE full scan, an AVG bootable USB scan, and ran a ClamAV scan from my Ubuntu partition (Together these found 3 more infected executables). I also ran a Ccleaner full sweep and the registry cleaner just in case. I think I have found all of the problems but am still concerned that there might be a payload leftover from the virus that I didn't find. Do you have any suggestions of what else I can do to be sure. Just FYI I use W7 64 bit and MSE as my primary antivirus. I was using chrome when I got infected and it seems that it was due to a slightly out of date Java installation (MSE gave me a warning that the website had used a Java exploit and then my desktop changed to the classic "System Tools" desktop) Thank you very much for your help.

• Suggestions for splitting server roles amongst Hyper-V virtual servers / RAID6 or RAID10? / AppAssure

  We have 2 Hyper-V hosts at present running 1 virtual server that was converted from a physical box running all roles. My plan is to split the roles over various virtual machines, upgrading to the latest software versions as I go, and use the backup server as a standby in case the main server fails. AppAssure backup software has a feature called Virtual Standby, so the VHD's can be ready to be fired up on the backup server if necessary. Off-site backups will be done via external USB drive for now. I'm just seeking some input/suggestions into how I'm planning to split the roles out amongst various virtual servers. Also, I'm curious how to setup the storage on the servers. We do not have any NAS's, SAN'S or any budget for this. What would the best RAID level be to use? I'm thinking either RAID6 (which is currently used) however I'm concerned about the write speeds, or RAID10 but again I'm worried that I can only lose 1 drive (from the same mirror) as opposed to any 2 with RAID6. I realise I have a hot swap for this, but what if a further drive fails during a rebuild? Is the write penalty of RAID6 worth the extra reliability over RAID10? Or will it be too slow with all the roles I am planning, therefore RAID10 is my only real option? The reason for the needed redundancy is I am the only technician and I'm not always on-site. Options I've considered: 1) 5 drives in RAID6 set, 200gb for host OS, rest for VM storage. 1 drive for hot swap - this is how it is currently setup 2) 4 drives in RAID10 set, 200gb for host OS, rest for VM storage. 2 drives for hot swap 3) 4 drives in RAID10 set for VM storage, 2 drives in RAID1 set for host OS. No drives for hot swap - While this is probably the best option with the amount of drives I have, I don't like the idea of having no hot swap 4) 3 drives in RAID6 set for VM storage, 2 drives in RAID1 set for host OS. 1 drive for hot swap All options give us enough storage capacity for our files, etc. We don't have any budget for extra drives or extra hot swap HD chassis for the servers. We have about 70 clients and about 150 users. • My linux server takes more than an hour to boot. Suggestions?

  I am building a CentOS 5.4 system that boots off a compact flash card using a card reader that emulates an IDE drive. It literally takes about an hour to boot. The ultra-slow part occurs when Grub is loading the kernel. Once that's done, the rest of the boot process only takes about a minute to get to a login prompt. Does anyone have any suggestions? I suspect that it may have to do with UDMA. Everything IDE-related in my BIOS seems to checkout. The read performance hdparm is telling me 1.77 MB/s. Ouch!   Hello, we use in all our pages in the 1st line of our HTML code the: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd"> We are moving on to the new IE8 and we would like to keep the DOCTYPE unchanged, is there any suggestions/warnings we better be aware of? I mean like: "Be careful that CSS min-width is not working anymore in IE8 transitional, be careful that it will screw up page in this and that, etc." Thanks!
