  I'm newbie on VPS configuration. So, I've installed apache, php and mysql and now I need to know how to configure Prefork to optimize Apache. • Restore data from overwritten LVM

  I lost all of my data (8 TB) which I collected over the past few years yesterday because I made some seriuos mistakes during the remounting of my LVM. I run a XenServer5.6 installation with additional 4 harddisks for data storage. An LVM over those 4 HDDs was used to store all of my data. Yesterday, I reinstalled XenServer and wanted to mount my old Harddrives and add the LVM. I run xe sr-create [...] for all disks (/dev/sdb .. /dev/sde), but that was totally wrong. This command deletes the old LVM on the disks and created an new, empty lvm on every single disk with no partitions. No i got 4 empty harddrives :( Is it possible to recover some data from that lost LVM volumes? I have no clue how to do it because i deleted all informations about the old LVM. Is there a way to access the files insed that old lvm directly?

• Proper use of disk to disk to tape backup using de-duplication and LTO5

  I currently have ~12TB of data for a full disk to tape (LTO3) backup. Needless to say, it's now requiring over 16 tapes so I'm looking at other solutions. Here is what I've come up with. I'd like to hear the community's thoughts. Server for Disk-to-Disk BackupExec 2010 Using De-duplication Technology 20+TB worth of SATA drives LTO5 robotic library connected via SAS 1Gbps NIC connected to network What I envision is doing a full backup of my entire network which will initially take a long time over the 1Gbps NIC but once the de-duplication kicks in backups should be quick. I will then use the LTO5 to make disk to tape backups and archive those accordingly. What does everyone think? Any faster way of doing the initial full backup over the 1Gbps NIC? What will be my pain points? Is there a better way of doing what I'm trying to achieve?

  I have a server with two Raids. Raid 0: 2x 1TB Raid 6: 8x 2TB The first raid I used for the hyper-v installation itself. The virtual machines should use the Raid 6, but how can I config it? I need at least one file server with the most of the disc space (maybe a second). But every vhd has a maximum of 2 TB and I can't use the volume directly because other virtual machines have to have access the Raid6. What do I do?

I am currently undecided between buying a JBOD case and installing OpenSolaris (because of ZFS), or purchasing a Nexenta license. The difference is about $ 12.500 for licenses over three years. What would you see as the main advantage in purchasing a nexenta license, beside the support? Did nexenta really enhance the basic OpenSolaris, or is it just a lot of marketing speak? No one really wanted to answer that question.

  I've got a complete backup of my main PC on 1.5 TB external hard drive that I carry around with my laptop so I can have access to all of my files while I'm on the move, however it has just dawned on me that if someone nicks my external hard drive they now have access to everything! Hence I'm looking for a way to encrypt my external hard drive. I'm after something that is: Secure (if I need to carry around a USB dongle to keep the key on so be it) Fast (the performance of the drive should still be reasonable) Cross-platform (I regularly use other peoples computers - Sometimes they are not windows based and might not even have internet access, however I still want to be able to access my files) Cheap (preferably free / open source!)

• Freezes when finishing installation of ubuntu 12.10

  I wanted to install Ubuntu next to my Windows 7 and made a 100GB partition for that. After that I downloaded the Image for burning the installation cd. As soon as I started to boot from that DVD, my computer made some crackling noises and then froze completely. I had to press the power button in order to shut it down. After that I decided to download the Installer Version for Windows and startet installing it on the E:\ partition named Ubuntu. So far so good, the installer finished and told me to restart my computer. I did that and Ubuntu wanted to finish the installation. As soon as that started, the computer made some crackling noises again and froze completely. Then I tried the Safe Graphics option, or whatever it is called, and it froze again. I would really like to have Ubuntu installed on my system, because I like it. My computer components are the following: Mainboard: Gigabyte X58-USB3 Processor: Intel Core i7 960 RAM: 8GB 2000Mhz Graphicscard: NVidia Geforce GTX 570 HDD: 1 TB 7200rpm with 3 partitions(100GB W7, 100GB Ubuntu, 800GB Data)

• Amazon RDS Pros/Cons of Multiple DBs per instance

  I run two completely independent websites. I am moving their MySQL databases to Amazon RDS. I'm not going to do Multi A/Z deployment - let's remove that variable from this question. I'm not sure whether to create a single RDS instance with two databases, or two Amazon RDS instances with a single database. Ignore cost for the sake of this question. I will not hit the 1 TB data limit so let's ignore that. However, it is extremely important that crashing one of the websites doesn't impact the other. Based on this document - http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AmazonRDS/latest/UserGuide/Concepts.DBInstance.html I'm assuming that if I write terrible code that crashes one of the databases in a given RDS instance, it could possibly take down the entire RDS instance (and thus inadvertantly affect the other database). • HP MediaSmart server system disk full

  I have a HP MediaSmart Server (EX 490) with Windows Home Server out of the box. It comes with a single 1.0 TB drive partioned 20 GB for the System disk. The system disk keeps filling up. I haven't installed anything but McAfee. Without getting into the philosophical discussions of why they would partition it thus, what is the likely culprit of this debacle? My D: Partition has plenty of space. I can get into the server only through Remote Desktop.

Here is the abstract about the whitepaper from official site: In this white paper we discuss two of the new features introduced in SQL Server 2008, Star Join and Few-Outer-Row optimizations. These two features are in SQL Server 2008 R2 as well.  We test the performance of SQL Server 2008 on a set of complex data warehouse queries designed to highlight the effect of these two features and observed a significant performance gain over SQL Server 2005 (without these two features). The results observed also apply to SQL Server 2008 R2.  On average, about 75 percent of the query execution time has been reduced, compared to SQL Server 2005. We also include data that shows a reduction in the number of rows processed and improved balance in parallel queries, both of which highlight the important role the Star Join and Few Outer-Row features played. • How to install windows 7 from scratch on a disk which already contains partitions

  Hi, I have following partitions on a 1 TB disk. 14 GB UNKNOWN recovery partition 100MB NTFS System Reserved partition for Windows 7 448GB NTFS Windows 7 system partition 468GB NTFS Data partition for windows 7 Now because of the problems mentioned in my other question here I got a brand new windows 7 cd and want to install it from scratch after deleting all the extra partitions. But windows 7 installation doesn't give me such options. It refuses to touch the 14GB Recovery and 100 MB (reserved by previous windows 7) partition. Any ideas ? Note: Because of it is a dynamic disks most of the freely available tools refuse to delete the partitions on the disk. regards.

• Time Capsule Refuses to Connect After Interrupted File Transfer

  I have a first generation Apple Time Capsule set up as a NAS on my network. I use the built-in hard drive for Time Machine backups, with a 1.5 TB external HDD attached to the Time Capsule over USB. Whenever I cancel a file transfer from the external drive to my Macbook (or quit a video I had been streaming from it, as was the most recent incident), I can no longer connect to the Time Capsule or the attached drive, and I have to unplug it to get it working again. How can I fix this? Is it a network error? Could the Time Capsule be at fault or could it be my computer?

• Copying files to zfs mountpoint doesn't work - the files aren't actually copied to the other filesystem,

  I have 3 x 4 TB disks in a NAS that I want to group together and access as if they were one whole 'unit' of some kind. I also have a 250GB disk containing the OS - this is full of films and tv shows currently. I thought zfs sounded good so I created a raidz zpool, after installing the ppa sudo zpool create store raidz /dev/sdb /dev/sdc /dev/sdd and set the mountpoint to /mnt/store sudo zfs set mountpoint=/mnt/store /store checked it was successful - I think it was sudo zfs list NAME USED AVAIL REFER MOUNTPOINT store 266K 7.16T 170K /mnt/store Then I wanted to move over a whole load of files from my home directory. I went to where the to-be-copied folder was (called media) and entered sudo cp -R * /mnt/store cp: cannot create directory `/mnt/store/media': No space left on device It seems like it's not copying over to the new filesystem I made (or thought I did). I've never really done this type of thing until a few days ago so may be running before I can walk... is this not the right way to copy files across? I've only used windows before so the idea of mountpoints is a bit mind boggling. I'm using XBMCbuntu 12 beta 2.0 which is based on 12.04. Will retry with normal Ubuntu 12.04 desktop to see if that's the problem. thanks for the help!

• Bluetooth Headset pairs and appears in Sound Devices, but shows as Disconnected?

  I recently got a TrueBlue TB-100T3 and tried pairing it with my computer (Windows 7 64-bit). At first it paired but would not appear under Sound Devices. I updated my Broadcom Bluetooth drivers here: http://www.broadcom.com/support/bluetooth/update.php Now my headset appears in both Playback and Recording, but shows as Disconnected. The device is on, paired, and appears under Device Manager as having no problems. I right-clicked and installed both the Hands-free Telephony and Headset services. I read somewhere that centos cant install on 2TB disk, so i made some partiotions smaller, but it's not workin. any idea? p.s. i am going to install Proxmox on that, but Proxmox same doesnt accept 2TB disks...

• How do I extract all the files in a VHD to a hard disk including permissions?

  I'd like to know wha thte best way is to make an exact copy of a vhd image and pu tit onto my hard disk. I've tried xcopy but there seems to be a number of issues rlated to permissions when doing this. Ideally I'd like to copy the bits so that they match exactly on the new drive. I encountered this when trying to restore a vista backup only to discover the idiots work who decided to not let me restore a 400 gig image to a 1 TB drive size. I've sucessfully mounted the drive in Win 7 which is the environment in which I'm trying ot copy these files.

• Most efficient Way to setup a game server

  I'm running a PHP based game which has over 45 Million members predicted for end of this year (2011) Currently we are on 7.5 Million, this game is being ran on facebook and I am in desperate need to help get this game server as efficient and as powerful as possible. it is a dedicated server with Processor Manufacturer Intel Model i7 920 Frequency 4x 2x 2.66 GHz NIC GigaEthernet RAM 12 GB Hard disk 4 x 1 TB specs. It has apache installed, cPanel, phpMyAdmin, several apache mods and MySQL. The game also runs 47 mysql calls per second per user. Is there any alternatives to the above which could be faster, more efficient etc? I dont mind having to recode the game to fit to it, as long as it maximises our upper limit of members on the game. • Is there a way to have customised text instead of subject in Thunderbird's inbox list?

  I am getting a lot of informational emails like "You've got a new message from ..." or "Notification of Donation Received", which often do not contain any information in the subject so that I have to open the email to see who sent the message or who donated which amount. I'd love to be able to make TB parse incoming emails and then display something interesting instead of the original subject, e.g. by defining a regular expression pattern. I know how to write regular expressions, but I do not know whether there is a way or an addon to modify the displayed text in the messages view. EDIT for clarification: I would like donation notifications from Paypal not to be displayed as original Notification of Donation Received but rather Paypal: John Doe has donated 50$

• Windows 7 Locks Up or Blue Screens after installing additional hard drive

  I've had my home theater pc for over a year now and it's been running with no problems what so ever. I got myself a new Seagate 2 TB hard drive for the holidays and ever since installing it the pc now randomly locks up or blue screens either upon putting it to sleep or waking it from sleep. The only thing I've tried so far is updating the firmware on the hard drive. I do have my minidump file saved off on my home theater pc however right now I'm at work and don't have access to it. Please help! Thank you!

• Making files generally available on Linux system (when security is relatively unimportant)?

  Hi, I am using Ubuntu 9.10 on a stationary PC. I have a secondary 1 TB harddrive with a single big logical partition (currently formatted as ext4). It is mounted as /usr3 with options user, exec in /etc/fstab. I am doing highspeed imaging experiments. Well, only 260fps, but that still creates many individual files since each frames is saved as one png-file. The stationary is not used by anyone other than me which is why the default security model posed by ubuntu is not necessary. What is the best way to make the entire contents of /usr3 generally available on all systems. In case I need to move the harddrive to another Ubuntu 9.x or 10.x machine? When grabbing image with the firewire camera I use a selfmade grabbing software-utility (console based) in sudo-mode. This creates all files with root as owner and group. I am logged in as user otb and usually I do the following when having to make files generally available to otb: sudo chown otb -R * sudo chgrp otb -R * sudo chmod a=rwx -R * This takes some time since the disk now contains individual ~200000 files. After this, how would linux behave if I moved the harddrive to another system where the user otb is also available? Would the files still be accessible without sudo use?

  What is it? And what causes it? Is it only for uncorrectable DIMM Errors(Troubleshooting DIMM errors)? When an UCE occurs, the memory controller causes an immediate reboot of the system. During reboot, the BIOS checks the Machine Check registers and determines that the previous reboot was due to an UCE, then reports this in POST after the memtest stage: A Hypertransport Sync Flood occurred on last boot 3 BIOS reports this event in the service processor’s system event log (SEL) as shown in the sample IPMItool output There are what seems to be some suggested answers to include Bad Caps Bios verisons (happens in one version not the other) Graphics card issues Lack of power to the CPU The list of possible generators seems to target everything but the computer case.
