• Can you play Halo 2 and Halo 3 on an Xbox360 Arcade?

  I'm looking at purchasing a Xbox360 because I've wanted to catch up with the Halo trilogy. Does the cheap Arcade edition console support Halo 2 and Halo 3? Would I be able to save my game progress in single player? Would I be able to play online in typical maps? Would I be able to play games using the DVD drive or do I have to download everything? Does the tiny HDD hurt even if I don't download any games, trailers or music? Are there any other differences in comparison to the Xbox360 Pro? I have a regular TV that uses the composite cable, so I don't need the HDTV support in the Pro edition.

• Handling Indirection and keeping layers of method calls, objects, and even xml files straight

  How do you keep everything straight as you trace deeply into a piece of software through multiple method calls, object constructors, object factories, and even spring wiring. I find that 4 or 5 method calls are easy to keep in my head, but once you are going to 8 or 9 calls deep it gets hard to keep track of everything. Are there strategies for keeping everything straight? In particular, I might be looking for how to do task x, but then as I trace down (or up) I lose track of that goal, or I find multiple layers need changes, but then I lose track of which changes as I trace all the way down. Or I have tentative plans that I find out are not valid but then during the tracing I forget that the plan is invalid and try to consider the same plan all over again killing time.... Is there software that might be able to help out? grep and even eclipse can help me to do the actual tracing from a call to the definition but I'm more worried about keeping track of everything including the de-facto plan for what has to change (which might vary as you go down/up and realize the prior plan was poor). In the past I have dealt with a few big methods that you trace and pretty much can figure out what is going on within a few calls. But now there are dozens of really tiny methods, many just a single call to another method/constructor and it is hard to keep track of them all.

• Best approach for utility class library using Visual Studio

  I have a collection of classes that I commonly (but not always) use when developing WPF applications. The trouble I have is that if I want to use only a subset of the classes, I have three options: Distribute the entire DLL. While this approach makes code maintenance easier, it does require distributing a large DLL for minimal code functionality. Copy the classes I need to the current application. This approach solves the problem of not distributing unused code, but completely eliminates code maintenance. Maintain each class/feature in a separate project. This solves both problems from above, but then I have dramatically increased the number of files that need to be distributed, and it bloats my VS solution with tiny projects. Ideally, I'd like a combination of 1 & 3: A single project that contains all of my utility classes but builds to a DLL containing only the classes that are used in the current application. Are there any other common approaches that I haven't considered? Is there any way to do what I want? Thank you.

• Where can I find video and audio drivers for my netbook?

  I got a little netbook yesterday (an Acer Aspire One) for schoolwork and read in numerous reviews Ubuntu was a must. I dove into it blindly and downloaded 12.04 LTS and though I admit it's faster than before, I have no idea how it works yet and was stupid enough to get rid of the Windows 7 Starter that was on there before completely. I can see myself getting used to the rest of Ubuntu, but the main issue is that it seems to have eaten all of my drivers and I don't know where to get any Ubuntu compatible ones. Any video at all is jilty and kind of creepy and any audio is very distorted and REALLY creepy. I understand that this is a tiny $150 typing and light web use school device I'm talking about, but I feel really stupid making the poor thing worse than it was before and not knowing what to do about it. Does anyone know how to install graphics/sound drivers? Or, alternatively, does anyone know where I can get a copy of Windows 7 Starter. I can see myself liking this if the problems are fixable, but if not I still have the product key and would be able to tackle the problem by myself with that.

  It seems that the Snippet Compiler is not maintained anymore. So I need an alternative – also for getting syntax highlighting for code in publications. Preferable with the possibility to conserve this highlighting by copying selections to clipboard. Snippet Compiler does not allows this for selections – only by exporting the whole file content to clipboard with HTML- or RTF-formatting (File > Export > HTML to clipboard respectively RTF to clipboard). • CPU I/O communication

  Hi, I know there is this question already discussed, but I still don´t understand something, so please just help me clarify it. What I understand there is 2 way to do I/O aka communicate from CPU with other HW. One is to use in and out instructions, and second is the memory mapped. But what I don´t actually understand is, is IN and OUT instructions are used, you define source port. But what is this port? I mean, is it different set of pins on CPU or what? And, to what is that port connected? And for the memory mapped, I miss just a tiny detail. Wheather memory mapped I/O must be first set by IN and OUT instructions, or does the device actually somehow itself connects to the RAM and reads it? Thanks.

  Hello fellow programmers, I was just wondering what makes php work faster, I have a few methods that I always go and do, but that only improves the way I can read it, but how about the interpreter? Should I include the curly braces when there is only one statement to run? if(...){ echo "test"; } # Or.. if(...) echo "test"; === Which should be used? I have also found http://beta.phpformatter.com/ and I find the following settings to be good, but are they? • Creating a newspaper that effects the game's economy?

  I am writing a game in Objective C/cocos2d where a newspaper is a central part of what controls or rather effects the game's world economy as well as what a city might do (such as increase X, reduce Y) The newspaper is a bit like a "Chance card" in Monopoly, it has an effect on something. My question is, what is the best way to do write a newspaper that has both a random and specific effect within the game. Would the best strategy be to write out all the things a newspaper can affect, a PLIST of headlines (with placeholders). I think Tiny Tower uses a PLIST of events and it randomly picks an event, but I'm not sure how it actually parses it because certain events do different things. But then how do I parse all the scenarios that a newspaper can deliver? A big switch statement seems very long and complicated to do. I am wondering if there is a simpler way to handle this kind of thing. Related to this is that there might be no news that day and I'm not sure what the newspaper should display, should it just display the last headline? So, in summary. 1) A newspaper generates a headline, it affects different things, such as the world economy, prices, how city reacts 2) I need the newspaper to generate headlines (although there may be days when there are no headlines at all), but I am not sure how to parse it without using a big-ass switch statement. • Xubuntu 14.04 with Compton, strange screen tearing, only when playing videos though (advice needed)

  Hello beloved community, Yet again I am in need of your great expertise. I ran into a very strange issue and just can't wrap my mind around it. I'm running Xubuntu 14.04 exclusively, with Compton installed. The OS runs great and I have absolutely no screen tearing when I move my windows around, scroll in my web browser, work in Gimp or Photoshop (wine) or even when I play very graphic demanding games, like Metro Last Light, Euro Truck Driver 2 and so on. There's not a tiny bit of tearing to see, but as soon as I play videos, in xbmc, vlc or parole media player the tearing begins (strangely enough this does not apply to youtube videos). I followed all available workarounds on askubuntu and the ubuntu forum,like the 50-xserver-command.conf, startx /etc/X11/Xsession /usr/bin/xbmc-standalone -- -bs or libsdl1.2debian fix and many more, but to no avail. I also tried the Open Source Nouveau display drivers as well, but for some odd reason they don't work so great on my system or at least with my graphics card. Even with Compton installed and configured, I have an extreme amount of screen tearing, as soon as I switch to the proprietary Nvidia drives the screen tearing is gone completely, except for the video playback with xbmc, vlc or parole media player. System info for your reference: OS: Xubuntu 14.04 Linux-x86_64 - Processor: Intel Core i7-4770S CPU @ 3.10GHz - Ram: 16 GB - GeForce GT 750M 1024 MB - Nvidia Driver: 331.38 Has anyone experienced such an odd issue or do you have any advice on how I could fix this? • Leaving my wifi open for the world

  For my home I want to be a nice neighbor actually I have let my wifi open for the past maybe 6 or 7 years. I know that WEP, etc can be cracked within a couple of minutes but my neighbors son who works in IT told his mom and she told me that I am doing bad things and you know the story.. Do you think it's okay to leave your wifi open to the public? I live in a suburb with a tiny street and about 8 houses in reach of my wifi. I have a 16k DSL line so if some one joins me for a couple hours I would probably not notice. I would love your thoughts on whether I should encrypt my wifi or not.

• Canonicals with differing content

  Interesting conundrum here with canonicals. Lets say I have a site with a "verified" system where other websites can become so and so "verified". Their url to send people to to confirm verification is something like "blah.com/verify/company1" and "blah.com/verify/company2". But logically "blah.com/verify" itself is not verifying anyone in particular, so it redirects to the signup form to get verified, at "blah.com/verify/register" As far as the actual companies registered, I figure it doesn't make sense to index every individual url with only the tiny difference of which company name it's saying yay or nay to being verified, so canonicals could come in handy on those pages to condense the indexing. Yet making "blah.com/verify" the canonical "hub" doesn't work well because it's a signup form, not a verification page, so technically has quite different content from the various verification pages themselves. But at the same time it's a bit unfair to choose 1 company to point all the canonical benefits too to use that as the "hub", yet a bit wasteful to have google index every individual verification page and spread out all that linkjuice. Basically, I'm just looking for advice, what's best for this from a search engine standpoint?

• At which point is a continuous integration server interesting?

  I've been reading a bit about CI servers like Jenkins and I'm wondering: at which point is it useful? Because surely for a tiny project where you'd have only 5 classes and 10 unit tests, there's no real need. Here we've got about 1500 unit tests and they pass (on old Core 2 Duo workstations) in about 90 seconds (because they're really testing "units" and hence are very fast). The rule we have is that we cannot commit code when a test fail. So each developers launches all his tests to prevent regression. Obviously, because all the developers always launch all the test we catch errors due to conflicting changes as soon as one developer pulls the change of another (when any). It's still not very clear to me: should I set up a CI server like Jenkins? What would it bring? Is it just useful for the speed gain? (not an issue in our case) Is it useful because old builds can be recreated? (but we can do this to with Mercurial, by checking out old revs) Basically I understand it can be useful but I fail to see exactly why. Any explanation taking into account the points I raised above would be most welcome.

I added delimiters part and when I tried running the query from phpmyadmin, Firefox went into not responding state. After that I started Internet Explorer and tried opening my pages which use the same database, it worked fine. However, I tried opening phpmyadmin and IE went into not responding state as well. I restarted both servers. Later restarted PC. Tried again but its same behavior. So whats wrong with this tiny little code ? Am I missing something which might be causing infinite loop ? Thanks

• Permanent death in a MUD (think command line MMORPG)

  I have considered writing a MUD for years, and I have a lot of ideas my friends think are really cool (and that's how I'd hope to get anywhere -- word of mouth). Thing is, there's one thing I have always wanted, that my friends and strangers hated: permanent death. Now, the emotional response I get to this is visceral revulsion, every time. I'm pretty sure I am the only person that wants this, or if I'm not, I'm a tiny minority. Now, the reason I want it is because I want the actions of the players to matter. Unlike a lot of other MUDs, which have a set of static city-states and social institutions etc, I want the things my players do, should I get any, to actually change the situation. And that includes killing people. If you kill someone, you didn't send them to time out, you killed them. What happens when you kill people? They go away. They don't come back in half an hour to smack talk you some more. They're gone. Forever. By making death non-permanent, you make death not matter. It would be similar if a climax to a character's arc is getting a speeding ticket. It cheapens it. Non-permanent death cheapens death. How can I: 1) Convince my players (and random people!) that this is actually a good idea?, or 2) Find some other way to make death and violence matter as much as it does in real life (except within the game, of course) sans character deletion? What alternatives are there out there?

• Why is my wireless significantly slower on Ubuntu 12.04, as compared to windows 7?

  I'm dual booting 12.04, and Win7. Just a tiny bit of background, I'm starting to get more and more interested in programming and 3d modelling, so I'd like to learn more about ubuntu as a result of those interests. Still a complete newb though! Anyway, When downloading on windows, I get 1.5mb/s easy. Now I swap over to Ubuntu, and it hasn't topped 150 kb/s since I installed it some 6 months ago. I'd downloaded most of my programs on windows, so I never really noticed it, but as I'm committing to ubuntu more, it's starting to hinder me. I'm with Shaw, on their Highspeed 20, which gives me 20 mbps down, and 6mbps up. Speedtest.com shows me varying figures somewhat close to what shaw says they give on both windows and ubuntu, which is to be expected, given that it is shaw afterall... So, I don't know what you guys need to know, and I know even less about how to get it to you. Whatever information you guys need, tell me how to get it, how to get it up here, and i'll get it on here! I thought it might be that I'm using a proprietary driver, when an open sourced one would work better? But I really have no clue. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks guys!

• How to copy files between windows 7 professional and enterprise machines?

  I've got a desktop system running Windows 7 Professional and a laptop running windows 7 Enterprise in a domain-joined computer and I need to copy around 50 GB of files from the Enterprise machine to the professional one. I'd rather not burn a bunch of DVDs or use my tiny flash drive of 1 GB to do the transfer. How can I mount a drive from one of the computers to the other so that I can just drag and drop? I tried using a homegroup, but the windows 7 Enterprise laptop does not see it from the professional desktop and the laptop cannot make its own homegroup since it belongs to a domain.

• Precision loss when transforming from cartesian to isometric

  My goal is to display a tile map in isometric projection. This tile map has 25 tiles across and 25 tiles down. Each tile is 32x32. See below for how I'm accomplishing this. World Space World Space to Screen Space Rotation (45 degrees) Using a 2D rotation matrix, I use the following: double rotation = Math.PI / 4; double rotatedX = ((tileWorldX * Math.Cos(rotation)) - ((tileWorldY * Math.Sin(rotation))); double rotatedY = ((tileWorldX * Math.Sin(rotation)) + (tileWorldY * Math.Cos(rotation))); World Space to Screen Space Scale (Y-axis reduced by 50%) Here I simply scale down the Y value by a factor of 0.5. Problem And it works, kind of. There are some tiny 1px-2px gaps between some of the tiles when rendering. I think there's some precision loss somewhere, or I'm not understanding how to get these tiles to fit together perfectly. I'm not truncating or converting my values to non-decimal types until I absolutely have to (when I pass to the render method, which only takes integers). I'm not sure how to guarantee pixel perfect rendering precision when I'm rotating and scaling on a level of higher precision. Any advice? Do I need to supply for information?

• Rant - Why is Windows Azure not available in Africa?

  Yesterday at the .NET user group meeting in Kampala Uganda  I gave a talk on cloud computing with Windows Azure  (details will be in my next blog post). The guys where excited. Without owning they own inftrastucture and at low cost they can build scalable , highly available applications. Not quite. Azure accounts are only available to people in particular countries - none from Africa. I attended PDC in 2008 when Microsoft unleashed Windows Azure. One of the case studies to show the benefits ofr cloud computing was a project in Africa for an education service in Ethiopia. The point they where making was that the cloud was perfect for scenarios where computing infrastructure is not sophiscated, like Ethiopia. Perfect , i thought. So i got my beta account from PDC and started playing around in the cloud. Then Azure goes live , my beta account does not work any more and I cant pay because am from Uganda. Microsoft , this sucks. I dont know the reasons for Microsoft doing this, but am sure we can work out something. We in Africa need the cloud more than anybody else in the world. Setting up data centers that are higly scalable and available for our startups is not an option we have. But we also cant pay for cloud computing with Microsoft. Microsoft, we know we are a tiny insigficant market for a company your size, but your excluding us only continues to widen the digital divide. Microsoft , how about you have a reseller model for cloud computing. Instead of trying to deal direclty with each client you have local partners who help you sell and bill your cloud services. I think that would lead to Windows Azure being available in Africa. I can help you resell in Uganda.

• Determine All SQL Server Table Sizes

• Ugly Boot Screen after upgrading to 12.10

  Is there a way to change the ugly boot screen in 12.10? It seems to have rolled back to that 8-bit blocky looking thing with tiny orange dots underneath. It then breaks into process code under that, and it looks ghastly. I've read some tutorials on getting Plymouth to do some neat things, but they were for older versions of Ubuntu. I'm running a GeForce GTX 460 if that matters. Any help would be appreciated. Update: I've noticed/found a couple of things. The upgrade on my laptop didn't do this. It still uses the "normal" Ubuntu boot logo (using Plymouth, I assume). So, something is off with my desktop. And, I found and installed Super Boot Manager to see if that would help. With that, I enabled Plymouth and added a new theme, but the machine still boots with the block-ugly logo. Finally, I messed around with Grub on boot and added "nomodeset" after "quiet splash" and added it while deleting "quiet splash." None of these solutions worked. I'll keep hunting...

• Looking for something like Google's Picasa [closed]

  I almost like Picasa, but there are two issues that irk me and I wondered if anyone knew of an application that does what Picasa does but without the following problems: Network drives. Picasa is hopeless with network drives. Ideally, I'd like photos to be stored remotely and thumbnail databases to be stored locally with a client-server set-up to update client databases. The main aim is to get updates propagated to clients efficently, reduce network bandwidth and have quick browsing on the client. It needs to be snappy when used over a wireless network. This is just a minor point but the folder view looks awful, especially when it uses those tiny thumbnails. (Also, what is it with folders being drawn vertically. Having spent years looking at folders orientated horizontally, turning them on their side looks so wrong.)

• Okular (on Ubuntu 9.10) prints multiple pages per sheet (n-up) very small

  I'm trying to print a set of beamer slides with multiple slides per page (4-up or 6-up). When I select 4 pages or 6 pages per sheet in the Okular print dialog, the pages print quite small (perhaps even tiny -- about 1.75" by 1.25") and leave significant white-space on the page. I can get around this behavior by using the pdfnup utility (in the pdfjam package); which will correctly generate a 4- or 6-up pdf file but it's annoying to generate a second pdf file when I should be able to accomplish this task from the print dialog.
