  • I try install dhcp3-server, but /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server file is missing. Whats going on?

    I've found several how-to's that essentially go through the same process in setting up DHCP. Here's a link that has the list of step needed install and setup DHCP. I follow all the steps and find that the sudo /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server restart portion returns command not found only to reveal the the file doesn't even exist. I've installed (sudo apt-get install dhcp3-server) and uninstalled (sudo apt-get remove dhcp3-server) two or three times. I'm pretty sure my config files are good because I've had to check them three times. But I don't think I'm to that point of being able to see them action it. I cant control the process. Why is the file missing? How is it supposed to get there? Help?

  • How to save/retrieve words to/from SQlite database?

    Sorry if I repeat my question but I have still had no clues of what to do and how to deal with the question. My app is a dictionary. I assume that users will need to add words that they want to memorise to a Favourite list. Thus, I created a Favorite button that works on two phases: short-click to save the currently-view word into the Favourite list; and long-click to view the Favourite list so that users can click on any words to look them up again. I go for using a SQlite database to store the favourite words but I wonder how I can do this task. Specifically, my questions are: Should I use the current dictionary SQLite database or create a new SQLite database to favorite words? In each case, what codes do I have to write to cope with the mentioned task? Could anyone there kindly help?     Is it possible to add wildcard serveralias (example: *.somesite.com) in an apache server without modifying httpd.conf manually? I use a DNS different from my hosting server and i have added asterisk A record to my DNS to point all request like (test.somesite.com,test2.somesite.com) to my hosting servers IP, but i don't see anyway of adding asterisk serveraliases to apache httpd.conf file in my cpanel. Pls is there a solution?

  • How do I disable DirectDraw and Direct3D acceleration on Windows 8? [closed]

    Some old games that i would really like to play run slowly on some graphic drivers when direct3d acceleration is enabled. I have tried many suggestions but none seems to work. The only thing i have not tried is disabling direct3d acceleration. Is it possible to disable DirectDraw and Direct3D acceleration on my Windows 8 pc? There are certain bad versions of GeForce drivers that cause this problem. This is a problem in the drivers themselves and is unfortunately completely outside our control. The recommended way to fix this problem is to update your graphics card drivers (go to NVIDIA's web site for this). Alternatively, there is a workaround that alleviates or solves the slowdown problem altogether. Try this: Right-click on your desktop and select "Properties". Go to the "Settings" tab and click on "Advanced...". Click on the "Troubleshooting" tab and move the slider to the left until it says that all DirectDraw and Direct3D accelerations have been disabled (around the middle of the range). Finally, click on "OK". Note that this workaround might cause other games on your computer to slow down, so you may have to switch back and forth between settings, but it's certainly worth a try if you can't obtain an updated graphics driver. -source: interactionstudios

    I have a computer with 1M of RAM and no other local storage. I must use it to accept 1 million 8-digit decimal numbers over a TCP connection, sort them, and then send the sorted list out over another TCP connection. The list of numbers may contain duplicates, which I must not discard. The code will be placed in ROM, so I need not subtract the size of my code from the 1M. I already have code to drive the ethernet port and handle TCP/IP connections, and it requires 2k for its state data, including a 1k buffer via which the code will read and write data. Is there a solution to this problem?

  • How to design this simple database?

    I have 2 tables - one storing user information (id, username, password) and the second one storing information about events (id, name, description, date, username(represents the user who created the event)). I would like to implement 'favourite events' functionality. This would allow the user to store his favourite events and later display them in a list. I am not sure how to implement this in terms of design. I need a simple solution. Something like storing the IDs of favourite events in a field in the user table. I am using mysql and php. Can anyone point me to the right direction?

Is there a way to get the favourite count other than calling users/show, and accessing the property this way?     The error i'm getting is in the fillPayroll() method in the while loop where it says payroll.add(employee). The error says I can't invoke add() on an array type Person but the Employee class inherits from Person so I thought this would be possible.     If i enter a url directly into the address bar of the browser, i get the following results: logger.debug ENV['HTTP_REFERER'] // => logger.debug request.referrer // => / So the first one gives me a blank result which is what I expected but the second gives me the root? Is this correct? It seems from the docs (http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActionController/AbstractRequest.html#M000478) that they should return the same thing. And secondly, why does it return the root, if there was no referrer.

  • How to disallow use of disable_functions in?

    I'm obviously not the first one to have this problem, but I cannot not find an answer to this situation. I want to lock down PHP a bit, more specifically the use disable_functions. The environment is CentOS 6.2/PHP 5.3.3 fcgid/Apache 2.2.15: Whats the proper apache config (AllowOverride, etc) to disable any PHP setting to be changed via .htaccess? All other overrides are ok (current setting is AllowOverride All) Whats the proper config to forbid effective use of disable_functions in all but the master php.ini (as in forbid use of disable_functions in /home/myvhost/etc/php5/php.ini or any directory within in that vhost public_html. another way to say this: the only effective disable_functions comes from the master php.ini)? If #2 is not possible, at least whats the proper config to disallow a vhost owner to effectively use any php.ini but the vhost main one (/home/myvhost/etc/php5/php.ini)? Thanks

  • How do you keep down your urge to learn many things [closed]

    One of the difficulties i have is to lower my urge to learn new things (Languages, tools, frameworks etc.). I know it's good to stay the bleeding edge, but at the same time i want to learn things properly. I really see that i need to strike a balance between staying bleeding edge and knowing things properly. For example: Before choosing Arch (Desktop), Ubuntu(Server) and Knoppix(Portable) -- depending on situation -- as favourite distributions. Virtually i have tried all popular linux distributions. You name any popular linux (Redhat, Ubuntu, Arch, Suse, Knoppix, Slax, Slackware) i have tried it for some time. In fact i have spent few years experimenting the operating systems. Before choosing Python, Javascript (nodejs). I have tried all the languages i cameacross Scala, Haskell, Erlang, Ruby, Python, Perl, Scheme. Same applies for database. All popular db RDBMS (Oracle, Mysql, Postgres, SQLite[Favourite] etc) and NoSQL (Mongo, Couch, Neo4j etc.). Advantages i see: We get a overall picture of the technologies/tools/languages. It's useful to select the right tool for the job. We develop a taste and choose the One we like. Disadvantages: I feel that i spend somuch time and see a need to strike a balance. In summary, for e.g. If i see a blog post in HackerNews about CofeeScript i will try it out irrespective of what i am currently learning (Say Haskell). I switch back to learning Haskell, then again i see DART i check it out. And this continues.. Effectively i take more time to learn Haskell, but learnt about other new stuff on the way. The quetion i have is how do you strike a balance between staying bleeding edge and learning properly.

    We have exchange running on one of our server here and there are 2 users connecting via outlook. The company has a generic Info@ email account and all users need to see this. I know I cant add a second exchange account to outlook so what are my options? Every user needs to see whats not been read whats been responded to etc. Thanks

  • Screen is very dim on an Acer Aspire 6920Z

    I've been trying to figure this out for a week now, my laptops screen is on and working but you cannot see whats on the screen without shining a flashlight at it. I'm using a spare monitor by the VGA port right now to be able to use this laptop, which is kinda a pain. Been reading around a bit about this problem and it seems to be a common-ish problem it seems. I've tried to change the brightness which doesn't help whats so ever. It just happen one day after I turned off the laptop for the night. The screen flashes on for a bit at start up, then goes completely dim. Anyone with this problem and find a fix? You can search up this computers spec by the name/model in the title if you need hardware info. I never had this problem with the old Ubuntu 10.04.

  • rts libgdx design?

    I am attempting to create a simple rts multi-player strategy game using libgdx. I am stumped at the moment. I want the underlying game world to run at all times and be aware of where all items are on the map.. so if player A logs in and moves unit to some location on the grid and logs off, that unit info is still there and can be accessed again by player A when they log back on to move somewhere else (if it didnt get attacked during the playerA was logged off). How can i do this? Do i create a main game world on the server and when players connect make client just sequentially request whats in each visible tile? Is there an easier way to get this done? Or go SQL route? Whats better?

  • VS2010 Launch Presentations

    Last week I was in Vegas to present at the DevConnections / VS2010 Launch event.  The show was well-attended and everybody I spoke to agreed it was educational and enjoyable.  My three talks were all on Wednesday, 14 April 2010, including one at 8am for which I was impressed to see a large turnout in attendance.   Pragmatic ASP.NET Tips, Tricks, and Tools My first session was on tips, tricks, and tools for ASP.NET developers.  This is a talk Ive given in past years, but which I refine every time.  I usually like to have a full session to devote to tools, and a separate talk just for Tips and Tricks, but for this show I was only given the one 75-minute slot, so I had to cut some materials to make things fit.  The talk went well, all the demos work, and the attendees seemed to enjoy it, and I like giving it, so hopefully I can continue to present on this topic in future DevConnections shows. Download the ASP.NET Tips, Tricks, and Tools slides and demos.   Whats New in ASP.NET MVC 2 My second talk of the day followed immediately after the Tips and Tricks talk, and was a brand new talk for me.  I have to throw out a thank-you to Phil for letting me see his MIX slide deck before he gave his talk, as that was a big help.  The official whats new document online is also worth checking out if youre interested in this subject.  Download the Whats New in ASP.NET MVC 2 slides and demos.   SOLIDify Your ASP.NET MVC 2 Application Just because youre using a ASP.NET MVC doesnt mean your code cant still end up being a big ball of mud.  This session describes a number of principles of software design that can help ensure applications remain loosely-coupled and malleable even as they age and increase in features and complexity.  This was my last talk of the day and did have one minor demo failure involving a database constraint.  Ive given this talk many times before, and in this case I had to fit it into a 60-minute timeslot, so Im not sure I had quite enough time to drive home all of the concepts to everyone in the audience.  That said, I did hear a number of positive comments on how the talk went, so thats encouraging.   • Does text size and placement on page have an effect on seo

    I was wandering seeing as Google and others keep trying to get more and more 'human' in terms of rating whats good and whats spam, is it known if they take into account the size of a heading ie. an thats font size is 40px is going to speak allot more to the user than a thats font size is 14px.. similarly does placement factor ? ie. a 300 word article at the bottom of a landing page (not in the footer but bellow the useful content) would just be there for seo purposes. i know they look at if your doing things like text-indent:-9999px; and white text on a white background, but what about these more border line practices that both have legitimate uses but also the possibility to be spammy
