• Development Applications on big devices vs mobile phones: Similarities/Disimilarities

  Hello, I saw a news document on applications running in mobile devices. And, I believe that might be interesting for people where I live (Internet is not developed - but the cellphone networks are much better). So here are my questions: Where can I find documentation for beginners on that matter (And most importantly) Am I gonna be able to take advantage of acquired knowledge in .NET framework (C#, MVC, JQuery, XHTML, ...)? Am I gonna need my laptop or a special device to develop applications? Am I gonna need Visual Studio? And so on... Bref, What are similarities/dissimilarities between developments for applications running in big machines and those running on mobile phones? Thanks for helping

• Automatic form generation software

  Hi! I'm using winforms. I spend a lot of time drawing forms (maybe not a lot, but it is a boring task). To sum up... I want to develop a simple aplication that connect to a sql server database, let the user to select a table, and put the controls in a form for me (generate the designer code), based on the tipe of each column. Then my app will name each control like the column of the table, set the maxlengh property (if the type is varchar), and create a label with the same text near the control. If the column is a FK, then the app will draw a combobox and so on. I saw that Telerik Open ORM make something like this, but I only need a simple app for the IU Generation. If the same day I finish my little application I discover a tool that make the same... I will feel myself stupid :D Are there any tool out there that do this work for me? Thanks

• What technology for a rich UI desktop application ?

  For an internship, I'm gonna have to develop a desktop application. The focus is creating a rich UI ( cool effects, sound etc ). Which tech should I go with ? - Flash ? ( in this case, shoud I go with a flex project ? AIR ? what is the gain between this and a simple raw flash project ) - C#/Silverlight ? Any other possibility ? • How to to dump JS array... (boommarklet?)

  A page on a site I use is holding some of my data hostage. Once I have logged into the site and navigated to the right page, the data I need is in the array eeData[] - it is 720 elements long (once every 2 minutes of a given day). Rather than simulate the requests to the underlying stuff json supplier and since its only once a day, I am happy to simply develop a bookmarklet to grab the data - preferably as a XML or CSV file. Any pointers to sample code or hints would help. I found a bookmarklet here that is based on this script that does part of this - but I am not up to speed on any potential JS file IO to see if it is possible to induce a file "download" of the data, or pop it opn in a new window I can copy / paste.

• Apple Mac Software Development

  I'm planning on developing an Apple Mac application which will collect hardware information from the host Mac and also installed software info. The hardware and software info will be collected in an encrypted XML file and then posted back to a website. The application should run as a "service" or background process on the Mac and can be configured to collect the data on a frequent basis defined by another encrypted XML config file. I've done plenty of Windows based software development but never on the Mac. Can anybody point me in the direction of any useful info on how to develop on the Mac, collect hardware and software info, export to an XML file, file encryption and packaging a compiled app to run as a service? Is either Objective C, Cocoa or Ruby a possible option? Many thanks for your help in advance!

• Start a thread using a method pointer

  Hi ! I'm trying to develop a thread abstraction (POSIX thread and thread from the Windows API), and I would very much like it to be able to start them with a method pointer, and not a function pointer. What I would like to do is an abstraction of thread being a class with a pure virtual method "runThread", which would be implanted in the future threaded class. I don't know yet about the Windows thread, but to start a POSIX thread, you need a function pointer, and not a method pointer. And I can't manage to find a way to associate a method with an instance so it could work as a function. I probably just can't find the keywords (and I've been searching a lot), I think it's pretty much what Boost::Bind() does, so it must exist. Can you help me ?

According to Microsoft's "It just works policy" the IDE is no longer supported after april 8th 2008 It still works to develop and deploy vb 6 apps. The question is: When will it be impossible to support vb6 applications, or will they live forever like Cobol applications do?   I looked already and could't find anyting good. So a question is, are there any good web frameworks that would allow to easily develop GUI for the majority of high end phones? By this I mean It would have to work the same on majority of high end phones (forget the low cost ones) It would have to simplify the development and hide the ugly details from developer Clear design and good documentation. Also some stability on the market. The focus in on good looking and easy to make GUI. Javascript is only a plus. So basically I am looking for something like jQuery or maybe ExtJS for phone development. EDIT: It would be a big plus if it could be consumed in Delphi EDIT 2: If it was not clear, I am looking for a web base solution. So the target is HTML output and not native code.

  Hi, I am trying to develop a sample application that finds the process name of a particular application.. Suppose there is an application by name XYZ.exe.. But when the XYZ.exe application is executed, it is not necessary that it holds the same process name.. Let the application run under the process name abc.exe.. Now my question is this..   I would like to develop a command-line program that can process and give "help" for subcommands. To be concrete, say I have a single script called "cgent" and I would like to have subcommands "abc", "def", and "xyz" execute and accept the rest of the sys.args for processing by optparse. cgent abc [options] cgent help abc .... All of this is straightforward if I hard-code the subcommand names. However, I would like to be able to continue to add subcommands by adding a class or module (?). This is similar to the idea that is used by web frameworks for adding controllers, for example. I have tried digging through pylons to see if I can recreate what is done there, but I have not unravelled the logic. Any suggestions on how to do this? Thanks, Sean

I want to stop resend of my email/voice recording. I am C# develop, one of my client asked me this question.   I have a small .NET WinForms application, and couple of linux servers, DEV and CL1,CL2..CLN (DEV is development server and CL* are servers which belons to our clients, they are in private networks and it's a kind of production servers) I want an update mechanism so that (1) i develop a new version and publish it to a DEV (2) users of DEV-server install latest version from DEV (3) users of CL2 (employees of client2) install stable version from CL-2 directly (4) application checks for updates using server it was installed from (so, if it was installed from CL-2, it should check CL-2 for updates) (5) i should be able to propogate the update to a selected CL-server (using just file copy & maybe sed; not republishing), if i want that (and if i don't, that CL-server will have an old version until manually i update it) I tried to use clickonce, but looks like it meets only first two requirements. What should i do?

• Can I include both Apache Axis 1 and 2 libraries in the same project?

  If it sounds like a ridiculous idea then it is. The client only wants to have to install one project on their server. Our web service will be bridging between mobile phones and various SOAP services made in .NET, Apache Axis 1 and 2, which rely on standards to transfer files such as MTOM and DIME. I am looking for an 'architecture' trick, such as develop the Axis 1 calls in a separate project and compile as a jar, to then pass it into the Axis 2 project.... Hmmm. Anything rather than having to download the source code for Axis 1 & 2 and compile them using the same xml libraries, etc. "It can't be done" is an acceptable answer. Thanks!

  Data in the file_name field of the generation table should be an assigned number, then _01, _02, or _03, etc. and then .ldf (example 82617_01.pdf). Somewhere, the program is putting a state name and sometimes a date/time stamp, between the assigned number and the 01, 02, etc. (82617_ALABAMA_01.pdf or 19998_MAINE_07-31-2010_11-05-59_AM.pdf or 5485325_OREGON_01.pdf for example). We would like to develop an SQL statement to find the bad file names and fix them. In theory it seems rather simple to find file_names that include a varchar2 data type and remove it, but putting the statement together is beyond me. Any help or suggestions apprecuiated. Something like ........... UPDATE GENERATION SET FILE_NAME (?) WHERE FILE_NAME (?...LIKE '%STRING%');?

The Java platform anyway, still looked like it had some promise to it: Groovy and Grails. Why does all of this seem to be going the way of the dodo lately? (Yes, I know their stock price is dropping badly.) Is it just the economy? Or did the lack of cohesion (i.e., not settling on a framework) among the community finally lead to its demise?

• What's the best way to test MSSQL connection programmatically?

  I need to develop a single routine that will be fired each 5 minutes to check if a list of MSSQL servers (10 to 12) are up and running. I can try to obtain a simple query in each one of the servers but this means that I have to create a table, view or stored procedure in every server, even if I use any already made SP I need to have a registered user in each server too. The servers are not in the same phisical location so having those requirements would be a complex task. Is there a way to simply "ping" from c# one MSSQL server? Thanks in advance!
