  • How do I comperes and split files with terminal

    So what I wanted to do. comperes(7zip) and split 600MB folder into 199MB parts but sadly when I tried to do this task with archive manager it gave me an error, but I know that if I use terminal it will work. I looked this up in askubuntu and found out about this commend 7z a -v5m -mx0 ubuntu.7z I understand that v5m will split it to 5 mb parts and -mx0 means that it will not comperes it but I want it to comperes so what should I write instead of this -mx0 pleas note: I am using .7zip because I most probably will use this file on windows pc thank you in advanced

  • Restoring file properties but not the complete files, from backup

    While copying data from my old storage on a Linux computer to the new (linux-based) NAS, I accidentially failed with getting the properties (most important: the modify dates) along to the new location. I also continued to use/modify the files at the new location and hence, cannot just copy it all over again. What I would like to do is a diff between files in the old vs. the new storage, and for those being identical, restore the properties from Linux storage to the NAS storage files. Is there a clever way such as a script or a tool to do this? I could either run it on the Linux box or in worst case from a remote Windows computer. Grateful for any suggestions. /Jon

  • Download from http server all directories,files and subdirectories and so on

    I want to download from remote http server all files directories,files and so on. I found some solutions to ftp server,but doesn't work to http. Until now no luck with wget -r or -m. It download all direcotories in the root and the respective index.html. Not all files and sub-directory under such it(note the sub-directory may have another directory and so on) not sure on tags fix for me if needs. Note: I'm not a native english speaker,sorry for bad english.

  • Desktop directory disappears in gnome-terminal, then appears again, but all files in it are deleted

    I am able to see my Desktop and with all its various links and files. But in the terminal when I try to access the Desktop directory: cd ~/Desktop I get: bash: cd: /home/administrator/Desktop: No such file or directory Then I find I am unable to access any of the files on the Desktop when I click on them although the file icons are there. Then the icons disappear after my clicking on them. Then I am able to access the Desktop directory in the terminal but the directory is empty i.e. all the files/folders have been deleted. What's going on? How can I fix this?

The directory has this setup: owner/group = www-data Permissions = 700 Questions: Is this a good way to secure the directory from a hacker uploading files? Will the hacker be able to upload the files directly to the directory? Note: I have a bunch of other security measures in my upload script + an .htaccess script in the directory that disables script Execution. One controversial topic was if we should provide swap inside the VM templates. Therefore I'd like to ask the following questions From an elastic Cloud provider point of view, does it make sense to offer swap partitions / files in the VM templates or is swap not needed when a VM can be resized? Which scenarios necessarily demand a swap file to be present? What kind of Storage should be used for swap files (e.g. local / central, FC / iSCSI / NFS)? Are there any best practices for offering swap files in a performant way in Cloud Infrastructures?

  • Can't access windows 7 shared files on Ubuntu 11.10

    I just set up ubuntu 11.10 and Samba. I got it to access shares on a Vista machine, but when I try to access the shares on a windows 7 machine it asks for a Username, Domain, and Password. I have no password set up on the windows 7 machine so I put in the username, and domain try to connect and the password prompt keeps appearing...also tried guest and admin with no luck...I've tried many different fixes(modifying registry entries & advanced securities on the win 7 machine) with no luck.   • Delete files on external hard drive affect SSD?

    I've got a SSD as my primary hard drive. I have an external HDD hard drive which I use to store downloaded files. At the moment I have to delete 80 GB of that external hard drive. I realized that if I delete it normally, it would probably go to the recycle bin of my SSD. I am wondering how I can delete the files on my HDD without affecting the SSD or putting any files on it.   • Writing a basic shader for large input files

    I started writing a shader for my iOS app and instead of starting from scratch i used this tutorial here: http://www.raywenderlich.com/3664/opengl-es-2-0-for-iphone-tutorial I wrote an import function, first to import wavefront .obj models. My problem is that with I can't handle larger inputs (with a simple cube it was working). I realized that the indices array is an array of GLubyte values, which is unsigned char, so as a result i cant have more than 256 indexes. I modified it to GLuint, but then only get a blank screen.   • MP3 files downloaded from cloud incomplete/cut off (Android app)

    I noticed today on my phone (Droid X running Android 2.2.1) that when streaming the Ubuntu One app would skip to the next song before the previous one had finished. Looking into it, one of the mp3s downloaded from the server was only 2.5MB instead of 4.2MB as it shows on the server itself via one.ubuntu.com. It's happened with multiple tracks today (I remember it happening once the first time I used the app too but shrugged it off as a glitch). The app itself shows a star on the playlist item indicating the file was downloaded even though it was apparently cut off for some reason, perhaps lack of good cell coverage, or some sort of dropped connection. It seems like the latter may be happening and instead of showing an error or retrying it just stops and shows the download is complete.

  • Git doesn't sync files until committed, even if checked out in a different branch

    Okay, I have git 1.7.11.1 on Windows and I have a local test repository with 2 branches. One is master with index.php and help.php. I then create another branch called slave :) I run from git bash rm help.php and it disappears from the folder, but I don't stage anything. I switch to checkout master branch and it is supposed to restore file help.php because it is not modified in the master branch, isn't it? And it does not do it. When I go back to the slave branch and commit and then switch to checkout master then help.php appears. Is that the way it is supposed to to work? Why?

  • Cached css/javascript files on Sun Java System Web Server

    I'm doing front-end web development in a Solaris 10 / Sun Java System Web Server 7.0U2 environment. I have noticed that changes to static css or javascript files often do not take effect immediately, whereas changes to static html files always do. My best guess is that a default setting in the web server causes it to cache certain file types in order to provide reasonable performance out of the box. I don't have the admin server running--I'll need to edit the config files by hand. What change(s) can I make so that all of my css and javascript edits take effect immediately? Thanks!

  • Process video (canon) mov files

    Well i would like to program something to process HDR made by magic lantern a canon add on. That doesnt change the format its just some kind of add on, that can produce HDR video. Its a bit complex to make such videos so i would like to use some math and make it myself and makee the software freeware (as a thanks to the creators of magic lantern). The problem with that HDR that normal converts have a lot of artifacts, and i would like to make something (for free) using some new algorithms. I have made, this works fine on individual images, my ideas work. I would want to do this on that canon 60d video format. Canons mov format, and am so far out of luck to read that out. It must be possible dough as i know in some projects they do it too. I would not like to export a movie first to jpg and then back to video as that requires a lot of disk space, i would like to retrieve individual frames, do my math based multiple frames, and then build a new movie on it. The output video can be of any type, avi or mov again. Does anyone know of a library who can do that ? (read and save), So i could use it in a C# project (i prefer C# above c++, but c++ is an option to program in to for me).

  • Files and folders disappeared from my desktop

    Suddenly all files, folders and icons that were on my desktop have disappeared. tried making "show hidden files", no luck. tried using recovery software, but it did not find any of this files, so I assume they were not deletes. c:/Users/<myname>/Desktop does look empty from the Explorer, as well as from cmd. installed MalwareBytes, it did find and remove some malware, but it didn't seem to help. used RogueKiller and it did find some suspicious registry called "HideDesktopIcons". ¤¤¤ Registry Entries : 4 ¤¤¤ [HJ DESK] HKCU\[...]\ClassicStartMenu : {59031A47-3F72-44A7-89C5-5595FE6B30EE} (1) -> REPLACED (0) [HJ DESK] HKCU\[...]\NewStartPanel : {59031A47-3F72-44A7-89C5-5595FE6B30EE} (1) -> REPLACED (0) [HJ DESK] HKCU\[...]\ClassicStartMenu : {20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D} (1) -> REPLACED (0) [HJ DESK] HKCU\[...]\NewStartPanel : {20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D} (1) -> REPLACED (0) I deleted this registry, rebooted, it only unhid My Computer and User icons, but my desktop stuff is still missing — any ideas what should I do next?

  • svn project with linked common files

    The src directory of my project is composed by three folders: two sub-projects and some common files. I linked the files of the common directory to the two sub-projects. I've just imported my project to svn but end up with three duplications of the content of the common directory. I'm wondering if svn can deal with this and how. Like an option which specify to not consider links. I thought about deleting in svn linked files from the sub-projects. Thank you, Éric.

  • Extract photo stills from .vob files

    My parents had all the family slides scanned by a photo lab. The lab returned the digital photos on two DVDs as movies; there's some stock music over a slideshow with fades between each photo. The discs contain only a handful of files, including some very large VOB files. I'd like to extract these photos and import them into iPhoto. I saw this answer about capturing stills, and that might work if I can figure out the right offset from the beginning and the right capture rate. But this approach seems very error-prone for this purpose. Is there a better way? I wish the individual photo files were stored in a directory on the discs, but they're not there.

  • Recovered video files won't play

    I have an SD card with pictures and video which malfunctioned. I was able to recover the files with Photorec. The pictures are OK, but wen I try to open the vide files (*.mov extension) in get the following errors when I try to open them in the following programs Windows Media player: "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file" Quicktime: "Error -2048: Couldn't open the file because it is not a file that QuickTime understands" VLC: it shows the first frame of the video and the sound is just white noise The filesizes look correct so I presume the data is still in there. Is there any way to fix these recovered video files?
