• SQL 2008 Replication over Internet

  We have decided to put our servers in data centers on east and west coast of US, to keep high level redundancy. After evaluating number of replication options, apart from VPN there is no other way to do replication for SQL Server. We are investigating VPN but I have following questions. Our Large DB consists of media information (pictures/movies/audio/pdf) etc, so we are not very concerned about security because they are not financial sensitive data. SQL 2005 supports or can be configured to support replication over internet? If Yes then should we downgrade to 2005? If SQL 2008 Publisher is configured for Web Sync, can we write an automatic program (C# Windows Service) to act as pull subscriber and run on the subscriber server and replicate subscriber database? Or are there any API available in SQL where we can write our own program to do replication in very generic way? (In a nut shell, can we write our own C# Windows Service based Subscriber program?)

• Configuring Notepad++ to run knitr2pdf

  Sorry for such a basic question but since I do not have a degree in programming... I am a user of R, knitr and Notepad++. I was trying to configure Notepad++ to run pdflatex and knitr(knit2pdf). By googling I found how to do it for pdflatex but I did not find anything for sweave/knitr. The following are the good ones for pdflatex http://www2.sofi.su.se/~mbe/docs/npp_r_latex.pdf http://www.tlhiv.org/ma497/software/ I inserted cmd /c cd /d "$(CURRENT_DIRECTORY)" && pdflatex.exe -shell-escape "$(FILE_NAME)" into the runrun menu in Notepad++. I do not fully understand the command though. I will appreciate any help on this. Please direct me if you can to any resource for learning these commands. I will be grateful to get any help in configuring Notepad++ for running knitr.

• What are the minimum hardware requirements for the latest version of Android Jelly Bean OS?

  I searched around, and there's no information that points exactly to the suggested, minimum, or otherwise dated information containing specifications on this. I want to install a newer version of Android on an older ZTE-X500 MetroPCS smartphone. However, I'd like to know the backwards compatibility in regards to using a newer featured OS with lackluster, limited hardware compared to today's smartphones, such as Galaxy S4. However, I still wish to do this. If Jelly Bean is too demanding, I will set up Honeycomb, or get a modified Honey Comb ROM, or tweak the source to my preferences. However, nothing outlines the specifics of the "system requirements" it suggests for optimum performance, such as RAM, processor speed, processor features, and/or any other features, like DMA, video circuit advancements, and/or sound and special hardware requirements noted as well. Please, if you will, point me to a source that mentions this, and please tell do not link me to any PDF file formats. Thank you. PS: I'm a computer programmer.

• Using .htaccess to protect direct access of files

  We need to prevent direct access of files on our site from someone just entering a URL in their browser. I got this to work by using an htaccess file and it is fine in IE & Safari, but for some reason Firefox doesn't cooperate. I think it has something to do with the way Firefox reports referrers. Here is my code in the .htaccess file. • How to keep Flash secured with EMET?

  I use EMET to secure a number of applications on my computer - web browsers, Office suite applications, PDF readers, as well as Adobe Flash. Overall it's working great, except that the Flash executables contain the version number in the file name, so every time there's an update, the file names change and I have to remember to re-add them manually to EMET. Is there a way to streamline this process? EMET does support wildcards, but only in the path itself, not the file name, so something like %windir%\system32\Macromed\Flash\*.exe wouldn't work. Is there any other way to add a whole folder to EMET so that any new executables in that folder are automatically secured?

• Actionscript multiple file upload, with parameter passing is not working

  Hey everyone, First off, I am very bad at flash/actionscript, it is not my main programming language. I have created my own file upload flash app that has been working great for me up until this point. It uses PHP to upload the files and sends back a status message which gets displayed in a status box to the user. Now I have run into a situation where I need the HTML to pass a parameter to the Actionscript, and then to the PHP file using POST.   I am trying to go for a 3 monitor setup on my workstation, but need some information before I can invest in a new graphics card and 2 monitors. Would be glad to get some help here: I have a Dell Precision 490 workstation with Nvidia Quadro FX 4500 graphics card (PCI-E 16) on it. It has 2 DVI-D ports that can support 2 monitors upto 2560x1600 resolution. For the third monitor, I was looking at Nvidia NVS 295 card, however I am not sure if it is physically possible to hook another card to the motherboard. • Installing SDM on a Cisco 2821 ISR

  I trying to change the configuration of our router, it's a Cisco 2821 Integrated Services Router. I don't know much about Cisco products. While looking at the PDF manual for the router I notices it talked about SDM Security Device Manager. But when I point my web browser at the IP address of the router, it give me a very simple web interface. It's sort of like a string builder for CLI commands. I'm guessing SDM was not installed on it. So my question how would I go about do that? I found this link (below), but I'm a bit new to networking. Despite the fact these URLs ends in such a format they are not static, but fake script requests, so I have a problems with them. What is the best way to do this? How can I add an exclusion for this URL or maybe I can to exclude the specific file exptension (.ppt.swf, pptx.swf) from the list of this Nginx location? Thanks.

• Timing issue with autohotscript, fails to dump or open destination file

  I've created a autohotscript to quickly dump selected text into my jot file on the Desktop and I think I'm facing a timing error. The script works like thus: Select text when reading a text file, browsing internet, reading PDF, etc. Hit Ctrl + J Contents of selected text is dumped into my jot file. When I press Ctrl + J very quickly, it sometimes doesn't come up in my jot file and sometimes when I keep pressing Ctrl + J for a long time, many instances of the text appear. • Syncing between "kindle for PC" and "kindle for iPhone"

  I have a number of ebooks that I am managing using calibre - E-book management. These books are in a number of various formats (pdf, chm, epub, mobi...etc). I found a blog post that detailed using calibre to convert the ebooks to ".mobi" versions and then, by double-clicking on the converted books, they would be added to my "kindle for PC" library. This worked very well. However, I can't seem to work out how to sync the books I've added to my "kindle for PC" library with my "kindle for iPhone" library. I should also mention that I do not own a kindle, all I'm trying to achieve is to be able to sync the books I've added to "kindle for PC" to "kindle for iPhone". Has anyone managed to do this? thanks.

  What should look like X Window System (X.Org) modeline to be put in xorg.conf, for high resolution (incuding recommended 1680x1050 @ 50Hz resolution) for 22" NEC LCD 22WV monitor? X.Org autodetect correctly only 800x600 and lower resolution SVGA modes, unfortunately. How can I generate proper "Modeline" line for xorg.conf? Is information included in NEC_Datasheet_LCD22WV-english.pdf enough (found on NEC LCD 22WV product info page)? What tools there are available to generate proper modeline for a LCD monitor for Linux? MS Windows (MS Windows XP Home) correctly detects and use 1680x1050 resolution; can I somehow get modeline information from MS Windows?

• Why does a website server recieve local files much slower than recieve files on other websites?

  The server at http://any2djvu.djvuzone.org receives same files from local computers much slower than from links on other websites (with the same files have been uploaded to the other websites, such as dropbox.com). The speed of uploading a file from local computers to other websites such as dropbox is also much faster than to any2djvu website. For example, a pdf file of 17MB needs more than 1 min to be uploaded to any2djvu server from a local computer with normal ISP such as Comcast High-speed internet, but takes less than 3 seconds from a dropbox link to any2djvu server, and takes around 10 seconds from the same local computer to dropbox. I wonder why there is such big differences for the speeds of different uploading ways to a web server? Thanks!

  How can I find out why my Apache webserver crashes? Sorry about my first post. Here is what I am doing: I am running xampp on windows xp. I was working on this tutorial and when i got to page 13 of the pdf version it crashed. I cant see anything weird in my error.log nor in my access log.   I'm having a weird issue where my buttons will work initially and direct me to an appropriate page, but when i go back to that page and try to use the buttons the roll-overs work but none of the buttons direct to a different page.   I'm trying to find some tool that helps me monitor several things. What are some requirements: Shows results on a web page. Checks existence of files/folders Checks sizes of files/folders Can parse xml files Can have several status depending if it's for instance, after 9pm Ping workstations/Servers to ensure they are on or off create daily/weekly/monthly reports (pdf, html, csv) show daily/weekly/monthly scheduled tasks check if specific users are logged in a machine check which users are logged in in a machine I've looked into some solutions but could not find what I wanted. Usually tools like nagios are more focused in servers, and spiceworks is not so specific. At this point I'm using a little powershell script that does several of these items, but before losing more time probably reinventing the wheel, what tools are out there? Thank you in advance.

• Which e-reader for O'Reilly books?

  Most of my programming books are from O'Reilly. Several of them need to be updated, and I'm thinking of going for an e-reader this time. O'Reilly sell their e-books as a multi-format bundle (PDF, EPUB and Mobipocket (Kindle)). Has anyone done a comparison of the formats as for suitability on a small e-reader screen? In Europe, the Kindle DX is not (yet?) available, so I'm not sure whether a Kindle or a Sony (or some other reader) is best suited for these books. Disregarding other advantages/disadvantages of the different readers for now, which one in your opinion gives the best experience with O'Reilly books in particular (or programming books in general)?

  Beyondtrust.com published a report, somewhat recently, claiming among other quite compelling things, "90% of Critical Microsoft Windows 7 Vulnerabilities are Mitigated by Eliminating Admin Rights" Other interesting 'facts' they provide say that these are also mitigated by NOT running as a local admin: 100% of Microsoft Office vulnerabilities reported in 2009 94% of Internet Explorer and 100% of IE 8 vulnerabilities reported in 2009 BUT, reading the first page or so of the report I saw this line: A vulnerability is considered mitigated by removing administrator rights if the following sentence is located in the Security Bulletin’s Mitigating Factors section, ?Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights. could be sounds pretty weak to me so and I wondered how valid all this really is. I'm NOT trying to say it's not safer to run without admin rights, I think that is well known. I just wonder if these stats are something you would use as ammo in an argument, or use to sell a change like that (removing users as local admins) to business side? Thoughts? There is a company called Zscalar that provides HTTPS Everywhere for Internet Explorer. I can't determine if the EFF approves of Zscalar's IE extension, or if the company hijacked the EFF tool's name. The only mention of Zscalar on the EFF website is the HTTPS Everywhere Atlas. The closest I can find from Zscalar are link backs on the Zscalar website and a Zscalar PDF that points back to the EFF website. The EFF tool is free, open source and can be audited, but I don't see similar governance for Zscalar's tool. For example, I don't see mention of source code at HTTPS Everywhere for Internet Explorer. And it looks like there's a "Free Trial" for HTTPS Everywhere for Internet Explorer (see the link on the right). Is Zscalar's HTTPS Everywhere for IE affiliated with EFF?

• LPR Printing InputSlot Issues

  I am printing from a Unix system to a Xerox Phaser 4510 (altho I have also had issues printing to a Xerox WorkCentre 7765). I am using LPR and trying to choose the InputSlot The lpoptions show the following options: InputSlot/Paper Tray: Tray1 *Tray2 Tray3 Tray4 ManualFeed Tray6 And here is a sample command that I am using: lpr -P printer -o InputSlot=Tray1 test.pdf.ps Here is the problem: Tray1 = Gives me Tray2 Tray2 = Gives me Tray3 Tray3 = Gives me Tray4 Tray4, ManualFeed, Tray6 = Tray2 (the default tray) If I change the default tray in either LPR, the printer settings, or both. LPR still sends tray2 as the default, where as printing from a windows machine or mac, would use the new default tray. I have also tried Tray0, and several other things, but I have not found a way to get it to print on tray 1. Any Ideas?

• Disable Save Changes dialoge in Adobe Reader X

  Yes, I've read and done the steps listed here with no results: Disable 'Save changes' dialog in Adobe Reader Basically what happens is with certain pdf documents, whenever I try to close them, it prompts me to save changes. This baffles me, as per their FAQ, Reader can't save anything, and I didn't make changes to the document in the first place. The one cause I could think of would be that the documents may not have been created with Adobe software, and as such may not write the pdfs in a way that makes Adobe happy.

• Add a remote printer over ssh on OSX?

  I have a printer at my office that is connected to a local network and my linux box at work can see it on the network. However, it is not visible to the outside world. I was trying to figure out a way to add it on my MacAir and so far have found two options: 1) Using ssh tunnel via CLI: cat file.pdf | ssh user@linuxbox lpr. 2) With Chrome installed on the linux box, using the Google Cloud Print service on the remote box and automator on my MacAir I can add the printer to Cmnd+p dialog box I like the first method since it does not require Chrome be installed and the second one since it allows to use Cmnd+p inside all applications. I was wondering if there is a way to combine by using automator to run the first command line script. What about port forwarding? Is it possible to forward the remote CUPS 631 port to a local port and then add the printer normally? What other methods would you recommend?

  My girlfriend requested me to recover a word file which is her 2 months of work :(, and this is her thesis for graduation. It shows the "Select the encoding that makes your document readable" screen when I tried to open it, I tried 2 recovery tools but didn't work. Wrote 2 pages and saved. Next morning she could not open it. it is possible that an error occured when saving. the computer she worked freezes sometimes , when she was working there was a file in usb she plug out and in it and continue to work. then saved.
