• Dropping support for IE6, Is swfObject still relevant?

  We have recently dropped support for IE6 at my job. The other developers have have opted for a generic object embed method: <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="example.swf" width="800" height="600" > <param name="movie" value="example.swf"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"> </object> This seems to work in all modern browsers but it really rubs me the wrong way. I'm sure this is wrong in several ways and is clearly a big step back in sophistication. So my question is in 2 parts, what is wrong with the above method? Is swfObject still best practice and what issues does it solve (besides IE6 click-activate)? Citations less then a year old would also be helpful.

• Dissapearing object function??

  Is there a reason for object functions to be unset or deleted or simply not applied for any reason at all that isn't intentional? I am maintaining someone elses code and gone through it many times. I use Google Chromes awesome debuger and also TextMate. These help me find the origin of error relatively fast. The problem I have now is that i have an object: types. This object conatains...types. And these types have functions and other variables attached to them. For some reason in the middle of the code, this type has been passed by reference millions of times probably. When it comes to a certain part of the code parts of it, seem to have dissapeared. Puff! And it's gone..! Anyone have a clue (other than it being removed somewhere else earlier in the code, I'm already looking for that)

• How do I include full PartCover results with TeamCity 5?

  Hi, I'm trying to get PartCover reports to generate correctly in TeamCity 5.0. When I click the Code Coverage tab in the build details, the reports are empty. I'm using the sln2008 build agent and my PartCoverage settings are as follows: Include Patterns: [*]* Report XSLT: C:\Program Files\PartCover .NET 2.3\xslt\Report By Assembly.xslt=>ByAssembly.html C:\Program Files\PartCover .NET 2.3\xslt\Report By Class.xslt=>ByClass.html Bonus points if you can describe how to include those reports (or just the important parts) with the email that TeamCity sends for successful/failed builds. I would like to continue using the sln2008 build agent, if possible, and not a different build agent.

• Deploying site pages in SharePoint

  Hi, I have around 9 web parts and 3 pages to be deployed. Each page will be having 3 webparts. From a deploymnet perspective, i think i have the following two options: Deploy the pages using a feature. The pages will have webparts present. Create a custom site definition with a document library and have the three pages as part of the document library. Can you please let me know which one of the options is better or is there any better solution?. Please note that the solution needs to work on WSS 3.0 as well.

• A function where small changes in input always result in large changes in output

  I would like an algorithm for a function that takes n integers and returns one integer. For small changes in the input, the resulting integer should vary greatly. Even though I've taken a number of courses in math, I have not used that knowledge very much and now I need some help... An important property of this function should be that if it is used with coordinate pairs as input and the result is plotted (as a grayscale value for example) on an image, any repeating patterns should only be visible if the image is very big. I have experimented with various algorithms for pseudo-random numbers with little success and finally it struck me that md5 almost meets my criteria, except that it is not for numbers (at least not from what I know). That resulted in something like this Python prototype (for n = 2, it could easily be changed to take a list of integers of course): import hashlib def uniqnum(x, y): return int(hashlib.md5(str(x) + ',' + str(y)).hexdigest()[-6:], 16) But obviously it feels wrong to go over strings when both input and output are integers. What would be a good replacement for this implementation (in pseudo-code, python, or whatever language)?

• Alternative Control Structures

  I've been wondering about alternative ways to write control structures. One that you learn early on for if statements is a replacement for this: if ( x ) { // true } else { // false } with this (sometimes this is more readable compared to lots of brackets): x ? true : false It got me thinking. Can we replace anything else incase it's more readable. We of course replace if statements like this: if (a < b) { return true; } else { return false; } with things like this: return a < b; We can save a long if with something like this (pretty much same as the one above): bool xCollisionTrue = (object.xPos < aabb.maxX && object.xPos > aabb.minX); So those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head for the if statement and doing comparisons. So I'm wondering what about looping constructs, for, while, etc. Maybe the code obfuscators might have some ideas.

  I have the following class structure (abbreviated for sake of time, names changed) in my application. When I was writing the code I felt that the similarities between Action1 and Action2 should warrant some sort of generalization. I've provided the UML Class diagram with the relevant parts (except for the interfaces, which I describe in code below). I was wondering if anyone had an idea on how to make this "better" architecture / class design. Also, actions that are very similar could be implemented in a near-future iteration. • Aero Glass Buttons Like Windows Media Player?

  Hi everybody, I am making making a program and I want to have a Aero Glass set of controls just like Windows Media Player, I found this: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/tims/archive/2006/04/18/578637.aspx but it just draws black. I also found a control that had the media player controls built in right ton the glass but it was no good it didn't want to render right and made different parts of my program not work. Any controls, or ways to extend the Aero glass so I can at least add my own buttons would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :) BTW C# only. :)

• Replacing xcode with macports software

  I have been trying to replace everything in xcode with stuff I can get from macports. So far, I installed xcode, then macports, then used macports to install gcc, gcc_select, gmake, elf-bintools, bintools, arm-bintools (just to be sure I replaced all the bintools), and then uninstalled all of xcode. I then linked /usr/bin/make with /opt/local/bin/gmake and used gcc_select to select gcc44--the one from macports. I also exported all the bintool executable paths into the .profile path. I was sure this would work (although I should have known better after working on it for 48 hours straight), but nothing will configure, and the log files all have the common error: :info:configure configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables I have a feeling it has something to do with libraries, but I am really not sure. I use a mac 10.5.8. If this is truely 'impossible', what parts of xcode to I need for macports to work? For example, I can uninstall the xcode folder without a problem.

• Measuring code coverage for selenium tests that reside in separate project

  I have two separate java maven projects: one is my web app itself and other one is tellurium+selenium automation tests for my web(I moved these tests to separate projects as their code doesnt really belong to the web app project code and doesnt use java classes of my web app, also I want to reuse some parts of those tests for testing my other web apps). Therefore, project where my tests reside doesnt know anything about my web app, except tellurium/selenium conf files(host name, credentials, browser). So the question: is there any way to measure code coverage of my webb app backend that is invoked by my tellurium/sellenium tests that reside in separate project? Thanks in advance. • Is there any way, short of "copy and paste inheritence" to share a .net class with a Silverlight app

  I have a project in two parts: a Silverlight front end and a WCF duplex service. Ideally, I would like to pass a message of a custom type (call it TradeOffer) from the WCF service to be consumed by the Silverlight application. When I try to, I get an error that indicates I can't pass an object of an unknown type across the wire like that and that, maybe, I could do so if I used the InternalsVisibleTo attribute on the server component. I'm not sure if that would work in this environment and know it would be messy in development. I originally put the message definition in a library to be used by both the service and the client, but couldn't add a reference to the library from the Silverlight client (because it's not a Silverlight assembly.) Is there some way I can access the definition of a message class from both the Silverlight client that consumes it and the service that publishes it without using the InternalsVisibleTo attribute or should I write the application another way?

• How much of Grails GORM to test?

  Is there a "best practice" or defacto standard with how much of the GORM functionality one should test in the unit/functional tests? My take is that one should probably do most of the domain testing as functional tests so that you get the full grails environment. But what do you test? Inserts, updates, deletes? Do you test constraints even though they were probably more thoroughly tested by the grails release? Or do you just assume that GORM does what it is supposed to do and move to other parts of the application?

• PCRE/PHP regex not matching last "item"

  Here's a regex that I've cobbled up: /(.*={76}\s)?\s*(.*?)\s\-\-\s(\d{2}\/\d{2}\-\d{2}\s\d{2}:\d{2})\s\s(.*?)\s(http:\/\/service.*?)\s(\-{76})/is and here's the text I will be parsing: http://p.linode.com/7015 and here's the replacement for the matched text: <item>\n\t<title>$2</title>\n\t<pubDate>$pubDate</pubDate>\n\t<description>$4</description>\n\t<link>$5</link>\n</item>\n\n I have almost come up with a regex needed to parse a block of text into RSS 2.0 XML markup. I've tested it with RegExr and RegexBuddy and it works perfectly except for the last "item" where there is no line breaks after the link (Line 269). In short, the problem is the "iProperty" article in the text is not matched. Any regex gurus willing to help me troubleshoot what's wrong? I've tried /(.*={76}\s)?\s*(.*?)\s\-\-\s(\d{2}\/\d{2}\-\d{2}\s\d{2}:\d{2})\s\s(.*?)\s(http:\/\/service.*?)\s*(\-{76})/is Here's the output that I get: http://p.linode.com/7016 but that didn't work as I expected (i.e. a newline would be optional). • Searching a document for multiple terms in VBA?

  I'm trying to create a macro to be used in Microsoft Word 2007 that will search a document for multiple keywords (string variables) located in an external Excel file (the reason for having it in an external file is that the terms will often be changed and updated). I've figured out how to search a document paragraph by paragraph for a single term and color every instance of that term, and I assumed that the proper method would be to use a dynamic array as the search term variable. The question is: how do I get the macro to create an array containing all the terms from an external file and search each paragraph for each and every term? • Background search for changes in TFS source control

  SourceGear Vault's client app has the ability to background search for changes. This is very useful because at any time I can take a quick peek and see what changes my team members have checked in and that I need to get latest on. This is also helpful for previewing any merges that might be necessary. And on a day to day basis, it helps me get a sense of what parts of the codebase are seeing the most churn. Is there a way to get this same functionality with Team Foundation Server, either with native features or a plugin? I know there is a Compare feature, but it takes way too long to be useful. Unless it could periodically refresh itself like Vault does, but I haven't found a way to do that. Anything new with Visual Studio 2010?

  Hi all Recently i asked two questions (1 and 2) about using OpenType features in programs written by python and .net languages, but didn't get an answer. i realized there is no way to change text rendering engines of operating systems, or force them to use OpenType. so now want to implement my own. such a program that: provides a text engine that receives glyph shapes from otf and ttf files and renders them in sequence of glyphs in text. generates all of OTL features can be used in other parts of applications like controls and components of .NET or python GUI libraries. if python and .net languages are not suitable in this situation, aware me about other programming languages or tools. comments and answers about text rendering system of common Operating Systems, or designing text engines compatible with unicode 5.02 protocol are welcomed.

• Windows 7 DWM weirdness

  I'm looking to write a FOSS "Alt+Tab" replacement (window switcher) for Windows, since there are a few features I feel it's (still) lacking; but I'm noticing two quirks I can't seem to fix: #1. (Somewhat Unrelated) In the default Windows 7 window switcher, one computer allows left clicking on a thumbnail to focus the window; however on another, similarly specced computer, I have to use a right click. The only difference between these two fresh installs is the theme. Any ideas? #2. (Directly Related) In both the default Windows 7 window switcher and the DWM API output, minimized windows often have no thumbnail, and instead show only the taskbar. This has been a long running problem with the Windows API, and in the past I've seen the popular recommendation being "restore (un-minimize) the window, take a screenshot, then re-minimize" - but this is sloppy and causes flickering, etc. Has anyone done this successfully using the newer DWM API? If sharing code, I'd prefer C# syntax, but VB.NET will do as well. Thanks!

• Screenshot of the Nexus One from adb?

  My goal is to be able to type a one word command and get a screenshot from a rooted Nexus One attached by USB. So far, I can get the framebuffer which I believe is a 32bit xRGB888 raw image by pulling it like this: adb pull /dev/graphics/fb0 fb0 From there though, I'm having a hard time getting it converted to a png. I'm trying with ffmpeg like this: ffmpeg -vframes 1 -vcodec rawvideo -f rawvideo -pix_fmt rgb8888 -s 480x800 -i fb0 -f image2 -vcodec png image.png That creates a lovely purple image that has parts that vaguely resemble the screen, but it's by no means a clean screenshot.

• PHP / jQuery page change transition

  Hey all Basically I want to replicate the page changing effect found here, at http://timvandamme.com/ But instead of using #values I want to use PHP includes, mainly because I want the site to be as uber-seo-friendly as possible... but still have this nice effect. So is there a way of doing this? I have a main index file which includes other php files in the centre using the usual 'GET' method, so my pages look like: "index.php?page=about" In my jQuery code I want to have a declaration where if I click the navigation, the content scrolls up, then once the relevant PHP file has loaded, have the content scroll back down and show the new page content (whilst also of navigated to the new page in the address bar, so if the user clicks the back button in their browser, they return to the previous page). I know how to code the scrolling bits, it's just literally the ajax loading includes / page navigation parts I'm struggling to work out :\ Any help would be MUCH appreciated!!! Thanks in advance. Additionally, any of these numbers (and any preceding .) may be missing. So the following are valid and parse as: 1.23.456 = version 1, release 23, modification 456 1.23 = version 1, release 23, any modification 1.23.* = version 1, release 23, any modification 1.* = version 1, any release, any modification 1 = version 1, any release, any modification * = any version, any release, any modification But these are not valid: *.12 *123.1 12* 12.*.34 Can anyone provide me a not-too-complex regex to validate and retrieve the release, version and modification numbers?   Trying to decode an invalid encoded utf-8 html page gives different results in python, firefox and chrome. The invalid encoded fragment from test page looks like 'PREFIX\xe3\xabSUFFIX' >>> fragment = 'PREFIX\xe3\xabSUFFIX' >>> fragment.decode('utf-8', 'strict') ... UnicodeDecodeError: 'utf8' codec can't decode bytes in position 6-8: invalid data What follows is the summary of replacement policies used to handle decoding errors by python, firefox and chrome. • Java NIO SocketChannel writing problem

  I am using Java NIO's SocketChannel to write : int n = socketChannel.write(byteBuffer); Most of the times the data is sent in one or two parts; i.e. if the data could not be sent in one attemmpt, remaining data is retried. The issue here is, sometimes, the data is not being sent completely in one attempt, rest of the data when tried to send multiple times, it occurs that even after trying several times, not a single character is being written to channel, finally after some time the remaning data is sent. What could be the cause of such behaviour? Could external factors such as RAM, etc cause the hindarance? Please help me solve this issue. If any other information is required please let me know. • Databind List Of Objects To A WinForms DataGridView, But Not Show Certain Public Properties

  I'm not even sure if i'm doing this correctly. But basically I have a list of objects that are built out of a class. From there, I am binding the list to a datagrid view that is on a Windows Form (C#) From there, it shows all the public properties of the object, in the datagrid view. However there is some properties that i still need accessible from other parts of my application, but aren't really required to be visible in the DataGridView. So is there an attribute or something similar that I can write above the property to exclude it from being shown. P.S. Im binding at runtime. So i cannot edit the columns via the designer. P.P.S. Please no answers of just making public variables (Although if that is the only way, let me know :)).
