• Ending a program on Windows Mobile 6 that refuses to die

  I have an application that was installed on a handheld device running Windows Mobile 6.0. The application basically connects to a remote server and sends scanned barcodes to it. The application shut down unexpectedly, and now it refuses to go away. I tried starting it up again and nothing happened. I went to the Running Programs, hit Stop All, and it ended everything but the application. It gives an error saying it's not responding, so I try to End Task, and it does nothing. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the application. Is there any way to kill this thing?

• Looking for personal scheduling software / todo list with rather particular requirements

  I've been scouring the web for a couple of (my boss') hours, looking for a piece of software that can organize my tasks in two ways. First, I have a list of bullet points / todo items I can do at any given time. Think of stuff like solve issue X, ask X about Y, write documentation about Z, etcetera. Second, I have a number of running projects I'd like to organize better, as in schedule for a certain part of a day of the week. Ideally (I think), my day would be organized as 50% spent on projects and 50% on the other small things. Now, I don't like most calendar applications (such as Outlook & friends), their UI is too 'official', not really easy to move stuff around (in my experience). I don't like most todo lists either, too static and things. I like new, fast and hip software. I've looked at GTD versions of Tiddlywiki, and I like mGSD for one particular feature. You can make lists of tasks and basically give them one of three statusses - Now (nothing required, you can do it right away), Waiting (you need someone or something before you can work on this), or the most gratifying of all, Done. I like that feature because it's a simple todo list, but indicates more accurately the things you can do right now and the things you depend on someone else for to do. Anyways, that's just a small aspect of that program - most of the other things in there I can't find a particularly good use for. If there's something like that (maybe something that works even snappier, cleaner UI), combined with an easy to use bit of scheduling software (optionally separated into two applications, but preferrably not), I think I'd like that. (Besides something like that, I also use several instances of Trac to monitor tasks and bugs and things for the various clients and projects I have to serve, and TaskCoach to monitor the amount of time I spend on each task / each client. An easy / low-maintenance time tracking software would be neat too) Of course, the software has to be free to use. I don't like shareware, trials, limited software and the like. I could develop my own too, but I'm lazy like that and there's a dozen other projects I'd like to do in my free time (neither of which I actually do). Edit: I like David Seah's printable CEO stuff, if something like that (with some video game / instant achievement / gratification) exists in software, it'd be awesome.

• Commit charge peak higher than system limit

  We are seeing some very strange behaviour on our servers and google didn't turn up anything usefull, so I'm tossing it out here. A standard server is configured with 4GB Ram, 2 4GB pagefiles and running windows server 2003. The servers are running 50-120 vb6/.net applications which normally consume no more than 100mb of memory, but will occasionally run up to 300 mb. The issue with a single process spending way too much memory is being traced down somewhere else, but the thing that is baffling us is that the reported peak charge is vastly higher than what we have available. As the image above shows, we are getting reported peaks that are way higher than what the system is actually capable of delivering. This number has been seen as high as 29GB, which makes no sense at all for a system with a limit of 12GB. Does anyone have an idea what is going on?

• Unable to set .NET 4 on Application Pool from remote, works locally on server

  I have setup Remote Administration for IIS successfully and connected to it. For some reason .NET Framework 4 doesn't show up as an option when configuring the Application Pools from remote even though .NET 4 is installed on both server and client (not that client should matter). If I login to the server with RDP and configure the Application Pools it work as intended, the option shows up. Even more odd is if I edit an Application Pool that already runs .Net 4 it shows up as an alternative (kind of strangly formatted text though, just says v4.0 instead of .NET Framework v4.0.30319 ) How should I proceed to solve this?

• Get Remote Processes on Windows 2003 with cpu percentage

  I have a production server with it's cpu's running excessively high. Except in critical circumstances nobody is allowed to logon to servers during non maintenance times. I am looking for an application I can use to look at the processes on the remote server which include CPU % usage. An application like top. Windows native tasklist.exe doesn't show percentage, nor does sysinternals pslist.exe. Suggestions?

• Why does F@H not bind to more than one core on Windows?

  I have been contributing to Stanford's Folding@Home project for some time with most of the computers I own. I just installed the Windows client on a new machine running Windows 7, but see that the F@H process only binds to one CPU core. Is this due to it being run on Windows? (I have the 64-bit edition of Windows 7 installed.) On the Mac and under 64-bit Linux distros, it will run across all available CPU cores.

• How to make the Microsoft Word 2010 web install version completely download itself?

  I installed Microsoft Word 2010 using the handy web installation feature. The way this works is that Word installs a bare minimum of functionality and any time it needs a feature that has not been downloaded yet, it will download it in-place just as needed. The thing is, this is stalling Word every few minutes. Every few minutes, Word takes a small nap while it tries to find some obscure feature somewhere. This is really annoying. Is there a way to just tell the thing to completely download itself? This was a nice functionality for the trial but it is extremely annoying in actual use.

• Intel Network Connection: This device cannot start. (Code 10)

  I have a Intel® Desktop Board DP55KG (see http://www.intel.com/products/desktop/motherboards/DP55KG/DP55KG-overview.htm), which has a Intel 82578DC Gigabit Network Connection on board. Additionally, I have a Intel PRO/1000 PT Dual Port Server Adapter in a PCI express slot and I am running Windows 7 Professional 32-bit. Also I am running with Intels latest network driver, in the 82578DC questions this means 11.6.92.0 with driver date 2010.04.12. The problem I am having is that the Intel 82578DC Gigabit Network Connection will not start on boot with the following message: "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". Disabling and then enabling the device after boot makes the network connection work again without any problems, but as soon as I reboot the problem occurs again. Any suggestion how to fix this? I have seen this problem on another Intel S3420GP board as well in Windows 7 that is.

  Hi all I was trying to confirm my understanding of "standby list" and "modified list" as stated in this article. Is it true that "Cached memory" (as shown in the image below) refers to memory that is currently cached (available for use), and memory that was previous cached (previously available for use), but currently used (now not available for use) ? So if x = "Cached memory" (1184), y = "modified cache pages", z = "cached and were modified", x = y + z holds true ?

• Home Wifi: wireless laptop cannot RDC to wired desktop (both windows 7)

  Hi, Both laptop and desktop are connected to same wifi router. desktop is connected through wire and laptop is on wifi. Both Pcs are running windows 7 and can ping each other and are in same workgroup. When I try to RDC my desktop on my laptop, it connects to the desktop and shows the windows credentials screen. An admin user (J) with same password exists on both PCs. But it gives an error "the user name or password is incorrect" However when I RDC the laptop FROM desktop using the above steps..it works perfectly wel! The same credentials issue comes with Shared folders. What am I doing wrong?

Products such as MS Office, Windows, MSSQL, etc. Only way I know to get a list of updates, is to go to the update page, and it only shows me ones I do not have. That and this is to assist a friend who I can not see their list of updates. I just need to know if a recent update could address their issue. (Not going to install updates blindly).

  I want to open the built-in task manager with Process Explorer's Replace Task Manager option checked. I've tried: Running taskmgr.exe from the run dialog. PE was opened instead. Creating a copy of taskmgr.exe in the same folder. Then run it. The built-in task manager was opened, but not working properly(its window was blank). Creating a symbolic link (using mklink) of taskmgr.exe in the same folder. Then run it. PE was opened instead. Is there any other method I can try? Thanks.

• Fast MMS streaming downloader?

  VLC can download MMS streaming video using the following command... C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC>vlc mms://blah.akamaistream.net/mystreaming.wmv :demux=dump :demuxdump-file=mystreaming.ps ... but it downloads the show at the regular reading speed. For shows that last longer than a few minutes, I was wondering if someone could recommend a good, preferable free, download for Windows to speed downloading?

  Here is a question about updating Oracle VM: Question: How can I perform Oracle VM 3 server updates from Oracle VM Manager? Answer by Gregory King, Principal Best Practices Consultant, Oracle VM Product Management: Server Update Manager is a built-in feature of the Oracle VM Manager. Basically, Server Update Manager automatically configures YUM updates on all the Oracle VM Servers, pointing each to our Unbreakable Linux Network (ULN) update channel for Oracle VM. The servers periodically check with our Oracle YUM repository and notify the Oracle VM Manager that an update is available for each server. Actual server updates must be triggered by the Oracle VM administrator – they are not executed automatically. At this point, you can use the Oracle VM Manager to put a server into maintenance mode which live migrates all the running Oracle VM Guests to other Oracle VM Servers in the server pool. Once all the Oracle VM Guests have been migrated, the Oracle VM administrator can trigger the update on the server. The entire process is documented in the Installation and Upgrade Guide of Oracle VM Documentation so I won’t spend time detailing the steps. However, configuring the Server Update Manager is exceedingly simple. Simply navigate to the Tools and Resources tab in the Oracle VM Manager, select the link for Server Update Manager and ensure the following values are added to the text boxes as shown in the illustration below: YUM Base URL: http://public-yum.oracle.com/repo/OracleVM/OVM3/latest/x86_64 YUM GPG Key: file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-oracle Every server in the pool will be automatically configured for YUM updates once you choose the Apply button. • Deploying WCF Tutorial App on IIS7: "The type could not be found"

  Hello, I've been trying to follow this tutorial for deploying a WCF sample to IIS . I can't get it to work. This is a hosted site, but I do have IIS Manager access to the server. However, in step 2 of the tutorial, I can't "create a new IIS application that is physically located in this application directory". I can't seem to find a menu item, context menu item, or what not to create a new application. I've been right-clicking everywhere like crazy and still can't figure out how to create a new app. I suppose that's probably the root issue, but I tried a few other things (described below) just in case that actually is not the issue. Here is a picture of what I see in IIS Manager, in case my words don't do it justice: This is "deployed" at http://test.com.cws1.my-hosting-panel.com/IISHostedCalcService/Service.svc . The error says: The type 'Microsoft.ServiceModel.Samples.CalculatorService', provided as the Service attribute value in the ServiceHost directive, or provided in the configuration element system.serviceModel/serviceHostingEnvironment/serviceActivations could not be found. I also tried to create a virtual dir (IISHostedCalc) in dotnetpanel that points to IISHostedCalcService . When I navigate to http://test.com.cws1.my-hosting-panel.com/IISHostedCalc/Service.svc , then there is a different error: This collection already contains an address with scheme http. There can be at most one address per scheme in this collection. Interestingly enough, if I click on View Applications, it seems like the virtual directory is an application (see image below)... although, as per the error message above, it doesn't work. • Whats the best way to update Ubuntu 9.04?

  I have a Ubuntu 9.04 server which has no packase support anymore. If I want to update my package lists, I get th following errors: Err http://de.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty-security/multiverse Packages 404 Not Found [IP: 141.30.13.10 80] W: Failed to fetch http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/jaunty/main/binary-amd64/Packages 404 Not Found [IP: 141.30.13.10 80] .... I read at the official Ubuntu-Support-Page, that there is a update-manager-core-Package to upgrade to a new release. Unfortunately I dont have this package installed and I am unable to install it because of the lack of package sources. EDIT: Installing the package update-manager-core from another release doesn't work because it depends on a higher version of python-apt. (Tried with 10.04) $ dpkg -i update-manager-core_0.134.7_amd64.deb Selecting previously deselected package update-manager-core. (Reading database ... 28743 files and directories currently installed.) • Detect browser focus/out-of-focus via Google Chrome Extension

  Is there a way to find out if Google chrome is in focus or out of focus? I'm creating an app which needs to know if the user is currently using the browser or not. By tying the detection through the content script in a Google extension, I've tried using blur and focus but the problem is that clicking on the address bar also fires a blur event. Same goes for detecting mouse movement, where moving the mouse outside of the viewing area will not be detected. I've also tried looking at onFocusChanged but it seems it only detects changes in chromes' windows not apps outside of Chrome. Anyone have other ideas for this? Also, would this be any easier if I created an add-on for firefox instead? Thanks!

• JNLP desktop shortcut creation with Windows 7 : "cannot create shortcut"

  Hi, we have an Java application deployed with Java Web Start (JNLP) that does a desktop shortcut. One client has issue with Windows 7 : in the end of startup/installation there is a message "cannot create shortcut". With our own Windows 7 machine we don't have problems and unfortunately we don't have much details yet. • Link To Work Item &ndash; Visual Studio extension to link changeset(s) to work item directly from VS history window

(– via MSDN) While making a check-in, Visual Studio 2013 provides you a quick way to search and assign a work item via pending changes section in Team Explorer. However, if you forget to assign the work item during your check-in, things really get cumbersome as Visual Studio does not provide an easy way of assigning. For example, you usually have to open the work item and then link the changeset which involves approx. 7-8 mouse clicks. Now, you will really feel the difficulty if you have to assign work item to multiple changesets, you have to repeat the same steps again. Hence, I decided to develop a small Visual Studio extension to perform this action of linking work item to changeset bit easier. How to use the extension? First, download and install the extension from VS Gallery (Supports VS 2013 Professional and above). Once you install, you will see a new "Link To Work Item" menu item when you right click on a changeset in history window. Clicking Link To Work Item menu, will open a new dialog with which you can search for a work item. As you can see in below screenshot, this dialog displays the search result and also the type of the work item. You can also open work item from this dialog by right clicking on the work item and clicking 'Open'. Finally, clicking Save button, will actually link the work item to changeset. One feature which I think helpful, is you can select multiple changesets from history window and assign the work item to all those changesets.  To summarize the features Directly assign work items to changesets from history window Assign work item to multiple changesets Know the type of the work item before assigning. Open the work item from search results It also supports all default Visual Studio themes. Below is a small demo showcasing the working of this extension.
