  • Customizing user privileges for an account in Windows (xp/vista/7)?

    Hello, I'm a .NET developer and recently learning WINDOWS API. When ever a program starts, my Kaspersky anti-virus says "application belonging to trusted group is trying to set debug previleges". I started wondering what are debug privileges? When ever application tries to open a file (using OpenFileDialog) it gives this message about debug privileges. It sometimes also says the so & so application is trying to read desktop.ini I'm not sure about what exactly it is either. Any way, my concern is about user previlages. When creating user account. We can only set the account to be either Administrative or Limited user.   • Secure external connection to SQL Server (from third party software)

    I have a SQL Express 2008 R2 server running on a server in an internal lan network. A few databases are used by some third party software to store data. A SQL-Server user is used by this application to connect to the database. Now I need to access this database using a local installation of the software from an external pc. In this particular case a VPN connection is not the solution I am looking for. I have access to an external linux server, so I tried ssh tunneling from the windows server to the linux server and use the external pc to tunnel it back from the linux server to the client, but this is working very very slow. What are my other options to allow this external connection in a safe way?

  • Prevent Roaming profiles from syncing certain elements

    Hello everyone, I'm somewhat new to the Server 2008 front, and I'm afraid I've hit my first snag: I've set up roaming profiles, and they appear to be working too well. Is there a way to limit, ideally on a folder/object basis, what gets synced with a roaming profile? What I'm trying to do is: 1) stop my roaming profile from syncing desktop layout - I run a dual-screen desktop and a laptop, and it's really annoying to have to reposition everything after logging onto the laptop, because it forces everything onto one screen. 2) stop it from syncing registry variables - specifically, I want Visual Studio to load different setting files on each computer. Currently, the variable that contains that path is getting synced whenever I log in, so I get the settings from whatever box I last logged out from. 3) stop syncing the start menu - this one's not as big, but I'm noticing 'program not found' icons even for programs that are installed. they work when I click them - they just look ugly. I'm running Windows SBS 2008 x64 with two Win7 clients (x86 Pro, and X64 Ultimate). Is there a simple way to do that? Or am I trying to work too much against what roaming profiles are designed for? I could, of course, set up different profiles for the desktop and laptop, but that seems to defeat the point of roaming profiles entirely... Thanks in advance! Any help will be much appreciated =)

    We are setting up a routing link between the Windows Server 2008 networks of two different buildings in my organisation. Each network uses a different IP addressing scheme (one uses public addresses, the other one uses private), but the goal is having a single Windows Server domain across the gap between the buildings. The link is provided by a 100-Mbps point-to-point line. I have always understood that you should not have more than one DHCP server on a network. However, we are planning to put a domain controller on each building, and each domain controller will be a DNS server and a DHCP server as well. The intention is that a machine booting up in building A gets its IP address from the DHCP server closer to it, in building A, while a machine booting up in building B gets an address from the DHCP server in building B. Since the two buildings will be linked and the network will be only one, will this work? How can I avoid that a machine booting up in building A gets an address from the DHCP server in building B (or vice versa)? Thanks.

  • Users removing Administrator from files/folders permissions

    We're running Windows Server 2003 R2 with Active Directory and are having an issue with network shares whereby users, in an attempt to secure their documents, remove everybody (including the Administrator account) from their files/folders permissions. Since the Administrator no longer has read permission to them, we can't even backup files manually as we get permission errors. One solution that we've found is to change the owner of the files and directories to the Administrator account. We can then change the permissions as we wish. The problem is that this has to be done manually so can't really be applied to an entire share. Another solution that we've tried is to use cacls as follows: cacls d:\path\to\share /C /T /E /G Administrator:F The problem with this is that we're still getting an ACCESS DENIED error on files/folders on which Administrator was removed. Q1: Is there a way to restore at least read access to all files/folders to the Administrator account in a recursive fashion? That would be for the short term. For the long term we're looking for a solution to prevent users from removing Administrator from files/folders permissions. Since we're going to migrate to Windows Server 2008 R2 soon we could wait until we've migrated to implement such solution if need be. Q2: Is there a way to prevent users from removing Administrator from files/folders permissions on Windows Server 2003/2008?

  • ActiveDirectory user files aren't being shared? [on hold]

    I'm taking a class in college and my current project is to setup Active Directory. So I have two VMs, one is Windows Server 2008 R2 and the other is Windows 7. I setup the domain team15.net (this is the FQDN for the forest) on the W2008 server machine. And then I connected the Windows 7 machine to the team15.net domain, and now I can login to the administrator account on the W2008 machine by using TEAM15\Administrator for the username. However, any files that I add in Windows 7 while logged into TEAM15\Administrator are NOT shown in the Windows 2008 machine. Is this normal? It seems like any files I add to this user in the domain only exists for the machine that I'm currently using. Is it possible to change this so all files for all users are synced to all computers in the domain? If not then what are alternatives? I noticed that back in high school we also used domains but there was a shared drive E:\ that you had to store your files because if you put them on in the desktop instead then they would suddenly disappear once you logged out and back in. How can I setup a shared drive? and which computer would provide the storage for this drive?

    One of my coworkers just got a new laptop running Windows 7 Pro x64. We use a GPO to deploy the printers to every system, but for some reason it is not working on this system. I have been breaking my head over this for the past 3 hours now without any result. The strange thing is that gpresult /H seems to indicate that the GPO did run.   • Storing high precision latitude/longitude numbers in iOS Core Data

    I'm trying to store Latitude/Longitudes in core data. These end up being anywhere from 6-20 digit precision. And for whatever reason, i had them as floats in Core Data, its rounding them and not giving me the exact values back. I tried "decimal" type, with no luck either. Are NSStrings my only other option?     I've created a windows service in c#, using Visual Studio 2008 I pretty much followed this: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/dotnet/simplewindowsservice.aspx I created a setup project, as instructed to in the article, and ran it... it installs my service to c:\program files\product etc.... however, it does not then appear in the services list.. What am i missing?

    Hi, I am exploring the option of querying a web-page, which has a CGI script running on its end, with a search string (say in the form of http://sw.mycompany.com/~tools/cgi-bin/script.cgi?param1=value1&param2=value2&param3=value3 ), and displaying the result on my app (after due processing of course). My app is written in MFC C++ , and I must confess that I have never attempted anything related to network programming before. Is what I'm trying to do very infeasible ?   • 2nd Year College - Learning - Microsoft Server Products

    As the title says, I just finished my first year of college (majoring in Software Engineering). Fortunately my school likes Microsoft enough, and I can get pretty much anything I want that Microsoft sells. I also can get IBM Websphere and the like for free as well. Earlier this year, I set up an oldish computer (2.6 Pentium D, x64) to run ubuntu server headless. I'm predominately a Java developer, so Apache, Maven, Nexus, Sonar, SVN, etc made it onto the machine. It worked really well for personal and school projects, especially team projects (quick ramp up). Anyways, I started to pick up C# to complement my Java knowledge (don't judge me :P), and am interested in working with some of the associated Microsoft equivalents. The machine currently has the Ubuntu install, as well as Windows 7 Ultimate. I do all of my actual development work off my laptop, also running Windows 7 Ultimate. I was wondering what software you would recommend putting on the machine. I’m not actually serving anything off the machine itself, but in Ubuntu I had it doing integration tests with Hudson on every commit, and profiling my applications, etc, etc. The machine would be running headless, and I would remote into it. Here is what I am currently leaning towards / wondering about: Windows 7 Ultimate vs Windows Server 2008 (R2) (no one is really clear why I should go with one over the other) Windows Team Foundation Sharepoint (Never used it before, kind of meh about it) IBM Websphere or Glassfish (Some Java EE web server) SQL Server 2008 A DVCS In order to better control product conflicts / limit resource use, I’m wondering if I should install things into virtual machines (I can get VmWare or Microsoft Virtualization Products) I also plan on installing everything I had running under Linux (it’s almost entirely Java based development software, so it’ll run on both, only reason I went with ubuntu during the year was because the apache build seemed better). I’m primarily looking to become familiar with enterprise software development tools, as well as get something functional that will help my development process. (IE, I’ll still use project and assign tasks even though I might be the only one to assign tasks to, just to practice doing so). Is there any other software / configuration details I should explore? Opinions on my current list? I primarily use C#, Java, and PHP. I'm familiar with ruby, and python as well. Thanks!
