• Expert system for writing programs?

  I am brainstorming an idea of developing a high level software to manipulate matrix algebra equations, tensor manipulations to be exact, to produce optimized C++ code using several criteria such as sizes of dimensions, available memory on the system, etc. Something which is similar in spirit to tensor contraction engine, TCE, but specifically oriented towards producing optimized rather than general code. The end result desired is software which is expert in producing parallel program in my domain. Does this sort of development fall on the category of expert systems? What other projects out there work in the same area of producing code given the constraints?

• iOS: How to access the `UIKeyboard`?

  I want to get a pointer reference to UIKeyboard *keyboard to the keyboard on screen so that I can add a transparent subview to it, covering it completely, to achieve the effect of disabling the UIKeyboard without hiding it. In doing this, can I assume that there's only one UIKeyboard on the screen at a time? I.e., is it a singleton? Where's the method [UIKeyboard sharedInstance]. Brownie points if you implement that method via a category. Or, even more brownie points if you convince me why it's a bad idea to assume only one keyboard and give me a better solution.

• gcc options for fastest code

  I'm distributing a C++ program with a makefile for the Unix version, and I'm wondering what compiler options I should use to get the fastest possible code (it falls into the category of programs that can use all the computing power they can get and still come back for more), given that I don't know in advance what hardware, operating system or gcc version the user will have, and I want above all else to make sure it at least works correctly on every major Unix-like operating system. Thus far, I have g++ -O3 -Wno-write-strings, are there any other options I should add? On Windows, the Microsoft compiler has options for things like fast calling convention and link time code generation that are worth using, are there any equivalents on gcc? (I'm assuming it will default to 64-bit on a 64-bit platform, please correct me if that's not the case.)

• Sending eMails in a external subnet in vmware ESXi

  This might be a bit hard for me to explain - and it is a pretty individual situation. I got a native server at Hetzner (www.hetzner.de). The public IP is 88.[...].12. I got ESXi running on this server. I can access the esxi console by the public ip, but none of the virtual machines. That's why I bought a public subnet with 8 (6 usable) IPs (46.[...]) and an additional public ip (88.[...].26). This additional public ip belongs to the first virtual maschine - a firewall appliance - which is connected to the WAN. This need to be done this way - since it is the official way by hetzner. My 46. subnet is behind the firewall. I got a virtualmin server with dovecot imap/pop3 server. When sending a email, most provider (gmail) will accept those mails, but a lot will put it into spam (aol). My theory is: The MX line of my domain says of course the ip of the virtual machine (46.[...]), but in the raw email it says that email is sent by the ip of the firewall (88.[...].26), which doesnt sound trustworthy. A solution would be if the firewall could handle mail, but it simply cant. How can I prevent this problem? Thanks.

  in mysql i use JOIN and one query is no problem. what about mongo? imagine categories and products. products may have more categories. categories may have more product. (many to many structure) and administrator may edit categories in administration (categories must be separated) its possible write product with categories names in one query? i used this structure categories { name:"categoryName", product_id:["4b5783300334000000000aa9","5783300334000000000aa943","6c6793300334001000000006"] } products { name:"productName", category_id:["4b5783300334000000000bb9","5783300334000000000bb943","6c6793300334001000000116"] } now i can simply get all product categories, and product in some category and categories alone for editation. but if i want write product with categories names i need two queries - one to get product categories id and second to get categories names from categories by that ids. is this the right way? or this structure is unsuitable? i would like to have only one query but i dont know if its possible.

  Hi, I am using Maven 2.2.1. and am new to Maven. I am trying to create an archetype based on an existing project. I have been using this blog post as a guide: http://blog.inflinx.com/category/m2eclipse/ Step 7 says "The next step is to verify that the generated archetype.xml (located under srcmainresourcesMETA-INFmaven (sic)) has all the files listed and they are located in the right directories." My generated archetype does not have an archetype.xml. It does have an archetype-metadata.xml file though. There aren't any errors in the output from calling archetype:create-from-project, just a couple of warnings about using platform encoding (Cp1252). Any thoughts on why this file wasn't generated?   Is there a way to use Log::Log4perl to make a smart self-logging module that logs its operations to a file even in the absence of the calling script not initializing Log4perl? As far as I can tell from the documentation, the only way to use Log4perl is to initialize it in the running script from a configuration, then modules implementing Log4perl calls log themselves based on the caller's Log4perl config. Instead, I'd like the modules to provide a default initialization config for Log4perl. This would provide the default file appender for the module's category. Then, I could override this behavior by initing Log4perl in the caller with a different config if needed, and everything would hopefully just work. Is this sort of defensive logging behavior possible or am I going to need to rely on initing Log4perl in every .pl script that calls the module I want logged?

• Upgrading PHP, MySQL old-passwords issue

  I've inherited a Windows 2k3 server running an XAMPP-installation from the stone age. I needed to upgrade PHP to facilitate an upgrade to MediaWiki to facilitate a new MediaWiki extension (to facilitate some documentation to facilitate doing my job to facilitate getting paid to facilit... you get the idea). However... installing a new version of PHP resulted in PHP's MySQL libraries refusing to communicate using MySQL's 'old style' 152-bit passwords. Not a problem in theory. The MySQL installation is post-4.1, so it should have the functionality to upgrade the user's passwords from 152-bit to 328-bit (what a weird hashing algorithm...). I ran the following: SET PASSWORD = PASSWORD('foo'); on MySQL but querying: SELECT user, password FROM mysql.user; returned just the same password I started out with - 152-bit. Now... I suspect you're thinking 'AHA! old-passwords is on!'. Unfortunately it's not - I've disabled it in the configuration (explicitly set it to 0), made doubly sure I have an absolute reference to that configuration file and ensured the service isn't using the --old-passwords flag. The service was reset after each and every operation. So I went onto another system and generated the 328-bit hash on there, copying the hash over to the first MySQL instance. Unfortunately, that didn't work either (I did remember to FLUSH PRIVILEGES). The application error is: "'mysqlnd cannot connect to MySQL 4.1+ using the old insecure authentication. Please use an administration tool [...snip...] Is there anything else I can try to get PHP to recognise MySQL as not using the 'old insecure authentication'? MySQL seems to be stuck in 'old-passwords' mode and I can't get it out of it.

• network error 414 when using google translate with wordpress

  I am using a jQuery and google translate on a wordpress site. It works well unless I call a div that is repeated in the loop like in an archives page. On these pages I get a network error 414 that the request URI is too large. The archives page I have are short and the php is only generating about 5 paragraphs for each category archive. Does anyone know how I can correct this error? Is this a serverfault question?

  Hi, I am looking to access the various bits of data in this data attribute: <div class="location" data="{id: 4, point: {lng: -71.413364, lat: 41.673681}, category: 'Restaurant'}"> The data attribute is easy enough to reach in jQuery, of course. But the string seems to be a non-standard or invalid form of JSON. I've tried JSON.parse() and also a basic JS method of splitting the array. By all accounts, it just seems to be an invalidly-serialized string. Will I need to reformat the data string? (it doesn't come from me, and it's used by other routines that I'd rather not break, so...)

• Why is only one Excel spreadsheet crippled, but others are fine?

  I have an inherited spreadsheet that I really don't want to rebuild at the moment. It's a simple small workbook that is small (< 200 rows that don't even reach to AA) and does nothing more than calculate some totals within the same worksheets. No macros, no external data sources, nothing beyond basic formatting of dates, numbers and strings. I see importing data from CSV/text has created many many workbook connections over time, but even if I delete them all (there were hundreds) it makes no difference in performance. Even clicking to simply change focus from cell to cell takes 10+ seconds, adorned by the spinning cursor and (Not Responding) appending to the title bar and the application locking up. The program seems to "recover" every time, but efficiency of editing this file is obviously seriously handicapped. All other files seem fine in Excel, and other programs have no apparent performance issues. I see Excel is chewing up CPU but I'm not sure how to narrow down what process or service is "clashing" with Excel. I tried the same file on other computers and performance is fine. If I turn off all start-up services and run only Excel, performance is restored... until I start using other programs and then it bogs down again. At this point, I would entertain almost any idea, theory or suggestion that helps pinpoint, solve or work around the issue.

  I have posts that use a custom field for start date and end date. Query_posts returns an array of posts that exist in the category I'm filtering. How do I query posts using this custom field that has date i.e. 03/11/2010 and not the full array. Pagination works on the full array so it returns all posts. I can use an if else to only show the posts newer that today, then pagination doesn't work. Would I have to build a custom mysql query?

I guess you know what I mean ;) My question probably falls into the "Which is the best style to do it?" category: How would you store these parameters (they may be Strings and Numbers that need to be formatted according to Locale) in the database? I'm using Hibernate to do the ORM and I can think of the following solutions: build a combined String and save it as such (ugly and hard to maintain I think) do some kind of fancy normalization and and make every parameter a single row on the database (clean I guess, but a performance nightmare) Put the params into an Array, Map or other Java data structure and save it in binary format (probably causes a lot of overhead size-wise) I tend towards option #3 but I'm afraid that it might be to costly in terms of size in the database. What do you think?
