  • FREE Windows Azure evening in London on April 15th including FREE access to Windows Azure

    [Did I overdo the use of FREE in the title? :-)] April 12th to 16th is Microsoft Tech Days – 5 days of sessions on Visual Studio 2010 through to Windows 7 Phone Series. Many of these days are now full (Tip - Thursday still has room if rich client applications is your thing) but the good news is the development community in the UK has pulled together an awesome series of “fringe events” during April in London and elsewhere in the UK. There are sessions on Silverlight, SQL Server 2008 R2, Sharepoint 2010 and … the Windows Azure Platform. The UK AzureNET user group is planning to put on a great evening and AzureNET will be giving away hundreds of free subscriptions to the Windows Azure Platform during the evening. The subscription includes up to 20 Windows Azure Compute nodes and 3 SQL Azure databases for you to play with over the 2 weeks following the event. This is a great opportunity to really explore the Windows Azure Platform in detail – without a credit card! Register now! We’ll talk about how certain social networking sites can deal with huge volumes of data so quickly, and why it sometimes goes wrong.   • C# Domain-Driven Design Sample Released

    In the post I want to declare that NDDD Sample application(s) is released and share the work with you. You can access it here: http://code.google.com/p/ndddsample. NDDDSample from functionality perspective matches DDDSample 1.1.0 which is based Java and on joint effort by Eric Evans' company Domain Language and the Swedish software consulting company Citerus. But because NDDDSample is based on .NET technologies those two implementations could not be matched directly. However concepts, practices, values, patterns, especially DDD, are cross-language and cross-platform :). Implementation of .NET version of the application was an interesting journey because now as .NET developer I better understand the differences positive and negative between these two platforms. Even there are those differences they can be overtaken, in many cases it was not so hard to match a java libs\framework with .NET during the implementation. Here is a list of technology stack: 1. .net 3.5 - framework 2. VS.NET 2008 - IDE 3. ASP.NET MVC2.0 - for administration and tracking UI 4. WCF - communication mechanism 5. NHibernate - ORM 6. Rhino Commons - Nhibernate session management, base classes for in memory unit tests 7. SqlLite - database 8. Windsor - inversion of control container 9. Windsor WCF facility - for better integration with NHibernate 10. MvcContrib - and in particular its Castle WindsorControllerFactory in order to enable IoC for controllers 11. WPF - for incident logging application 12. Moq - mocking lib used for unit tests 13. NUnit - unit testing framework 14. Log4net - logging framework 15. Cloud based on Azure SDK These are not the latest technologies, tools and libs for the moment but if there are someone thinks that it would be useful to migrate the sample to latest current technologies and versions please comment. Cloud version of the application is based on Azure emulated environment provided by the SDK, so it hasn't been tested on ‘real' Azure scenario (we just do not have access to it).   • Creative, busy Devoxx week

    I got back from my first visit to the developer conference Devoxx in Antwerp. I can't describe the vibes of the conference, it was a developer amusement park, hackergartens, fact sessions, comic relief provided by Java Posse, James Bond and endless hallway discussions.All and all - I had a lot of fun, my main mission was to talk about Oracle's main focus for OpenJDK which besides development and bug fixing is making sure the infrastructure is working out for the full community. My focus was not to hang out at night club the Noxx, but that was came included in the package :)The London Java community leaders Ben Evans and Martijn Verburg are leading discussions in the community to lay out the necessary requirements for the infrastructure for build and test in the open. They called a first meeting at JavaOne gathering 25 people, including people from RedHat, IBM and Oracle. The second meeting at Devoxx included 14 participants and had representatives from Oracle and IBM. I hope we really can find a way to collaborate on this, making sure we deliver an efficient infrastructure for all engineers to contribute to OpenJDK with.My home in all of this was the BOF rooms and the sessions there meeting the JUG leaders, talking about OpenJDK infrastructure and celebrating the Duchess Duke Award together with the others. The restaurants in the area was slower than I've ever seen, so I missed out on Trisha Gee's brilliant replay of the workshop "The Problem with Women in IT - an Agile Approach" where she masterly leads the audience (a packed room, 50-50 gender distribution) to solve the problem of including more diversity in the developer community. A tough and sometimes sensitive topic where she manages to keep the discussion objective with a focus of improving the matter from a business perspective. Mattias Karlsson is organizing the Java developer conference Jfokus in Stockholm and was there talking to Andres Almires planning a Hackergarten with a possible inclusion of an OpenJDK bugathon. That would be really cool, especially as the Oracle Stockholm Java development office is just across the water from the Jfokus venue, some of the local JVM engineers will likely attend and assist, even though the bug smashing theme will likely be more starter level build warnings in Swing or langtools than fixing JVM bugs.I was really happy that I managed to catch a seat for the Java Posse live podcast "the Third Presidential Debate" a lot of nerd humor, a lot of beer, a lot of fun :) The new member Chet had a perfect dead pan delivery and now I just have to listen more to the podcasts! Can't get the most perfect joke out of my head, talking about beer "As my father always said: Better a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy" - hilarious :)I attended the sessions delivered by my Stockholm office colleagues Marcus Lagergren (on dynamic languages on the jvm, JavaScript in particular) and Joel Borggrén-Franck (Annotations) and was happy to see the packed room and all the questions raised at the end.There's loads of stuff to write about the event, but just have to pace myself for now. It was a fantastic event, captain Stephan Janssen with crew should be really proud to provide this forum to the developer community!

  • Flex Repeater: Delay repeater until rest of view has loaded

    Hi, I have a flex repeater for an accordion inside a TitleWindow that is quite slow, I've already set recycleChildren to true, which has helped, but it's still slow on the first load and causes the animation to stutter when I open the TitleWindow. The repeater is just one part of what's visible in the TitleWindow, what I would like to do is have the repeater load after the rest of the content in the TitleWindow so the animation of the TitleWindow being opened doesn't stutter (the main problem). Can anyone suggest what the best way to achieve that might be? Thanks, Chris

    Hi, our Webpage: http://www.checkdent.com/mobile/sv.php?id=12332181087788749 looks fine on Android G1, but comes resized on the Google Nexus (higher resolution) Half part of the Page is outside of the View! I implemented as mentioned at several places the: target-densityDpi=device-dpi < meta content="minimum-scale=1.0, width=device-width, , target- densityDpi=device-dpi, maximum-scale=0.6667, user-scalable=no" name="viewport" / it works great within the 'android browser' but in my Webview Application it still resize!!   • Removing the default pages when adding a domain via Plesk

    Hi, whenever I add a new domain into my new Plesk control panel on my dedicated server it creates a whole bunch of test files in the cgi-bin, httpdocs and httpsdocs. There must be some setting somewhere where I can tell Plesk not to do this? I've done a good Google search but must now turn to the StackOverflow masses :) Yours, Chris

  • Flex: Is it worth upgrading to Flex 4?

    Hi, I'm in the process of building my first serious Flex application and have started out using Flex 3.4 even though 4.0 was available mainly due to the larger number of resources. But now I feel very comfortable with the Flex API's, is it worth upgrading to Flex 4? What are the benefits?     Why does static char *opcode_str[] = { "DATA" , "DATA_REQUEST_ACK" , "ACK_TIMER_EXPIRED" , "ACK_UNEXPECTED_SEQ" , "ACK_AS_REQUESTED" } ; work, but static char **opcode_str = { "DATA" , "DATA_REQUEST_ACK" , "ACK_TIMER_EXPIRED" , "ACK_UNEXPECTED_SEQ" , "ACK_AS_REQUESTED" } ; fails with SEGV when opcode_str[0] is printf'd? I think it's because the second listing has not allocated memory for the five element array of pointers, but I need a more comprehensive explanation. All the best, Chris.

    I'm just learning ROR and I came across the if / else statements. I also came across 'elseif' but my text editor (textmate) doesn't pick it up as a keyword, not does the program run properly. if name == 'Chris' puts 'What a lovely name.' elseif name == 'Katy' puts 'What a lovely name!' end I'm using the book, Learn to Program, which was written several years ago. I was wondering if the 'elseif' was changed because when I simply use 'else' it seems to function properly

    Hi, many questions are close, but none answers my problem... How do I use reflection in C# 3.5 to get all classes which are static from an assembly. I already get all Types defined, but there is no IsStatic property. Counting 0 constructors is really slow and did not work either. Any tips or a line of code? :-) Chris

  • rake gems:refresh_specs error on unpacked gems

    Following the great advice of Chris Wanstrath, I decided to vendor everything. However, whenever I run a rake task now I get an error for each of my unpacked gems stating config.gem: Unpacked gem gemname in vendor/gems has no specification file. Run 'rake gems:refresh_specs' to fix this. I've done this but no dice. Anyone have the same issue? If so, how do I resolve? TIA

  • How can I reload a datagrid in flash action script, after an xml file has loaded

    Hi Everyone, Does anyone know how to change the rowcount of a datagrid in flash after it has been created on the stage. I am loading an xml file externally that contains the number of rows the datagrid should have, but the problem is that becuase this file is not loaded at runtime, it just picks the default 3 items. Maybe I have to reload the datagrid on the stage, or loop until it is defined. Does anyone have experince of this. Regards, Chris

    Hi, i have a webview in my iphone app where a google map location is opened like; Directions now the google map native app opens fine, but how could i add a RETURN button so it would jump back to my html page. Now i have to click my home button and the app close back to the desktop, so i have to start my webview again. in android its more easy, because there is always a back button and after viewing my gmap i simply back in my webview. thx chris

  • Flex: Change line height of Label component

    Hi guys, Maybe I'm googling for the wrong thing but I can't find anything on this. How can I change the line height of a Label element in Flex? I have two labels in a VBox and there is quite a lot of white space between them which I would like to reduce. There's no line height property and setting the height property causes overlap.
