• Top down or bottom up approach?

  this is the closest I think I can get to define my problem. I'm an interface designer and now I'm working with a team of programmers to develop a new CMS for a heavy media site. I'm sorry if it's a very, very dumb question to ask here, but I really need some help. As I've started developing a specification list for a prototype it turned out a very big one. I do realize now that the client-side will be JS heavy, with lots of DnD and other "cool designer stuff". The CMS will even include a small project management system for its users, nothing big like Basecamp, but with a live feed of comments etc. The problem is the the team has now separated. Someone is proposing the existing backend solution used in other CMS, someone is proposing to rewrite everything from scratch. The point to keep the code is that it is faster, the point to rewrite is to make it better for the proposed design (include Node.js and other stuff I don't actually get). The question is — can the UI specs influence back-end? The guys that propose to use the existing solution did everything with the Yii framework (as far as I know), and they say that everything on server is not affected by this "interface coolness". Others say that it does, that even autosave can't work without server load. Please, if this is really incomprehensible, again, I'm sorry, and I'll happy to clarify it after your questions. • Different color prompts for different machines when using terminal/ssh?

  Hi, I have 5 machines I constantly ssh into to do work. Its getting increasingly frustrating when I am issuing wrong commands on wrong boxes. Luckily I havent done anything bad yet. I wanted to know if there is any hack which I can hardcode which will display my prompt in different colors based on the machine I am ssh into? Such as blue for desktop1, purple for laptop, red for server etc? Is this possible? Currently I am using this command export PS1="\e[0;31m[\u@\h \W]\$ \e[m " taken from here http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/bash-shell-change-the-color-of-my-shell-prompt-under-linux-or-unix/ but it obviously doesnt work across ssh. Also, if you have any other cool bash tips for helping me ease my sight will be wonderful. • Visual Studio 2010 locking referenced Assembly

  I have a sandbox app that is built from the simple WPF Application template. This sandbox references an assembly that I am also building which contains the definition of a UserControl (WPF). I am instantiating this user control in the sandbox, to test the control's behaviour. The point of all this is to speed up development. This worked fine, but recently the .Vshost.exe paired with the sandbox process won't shut down. This prevents me from recompiling the Controls library, though ironically I can recompile the sandbox application. I can't kill the vshost process with Task Manager... only restarting VS2010 will clear it out. But every time I run the application from VS, the process just hangs there, blocking my workflow. I'm at a loss. Any ideas what could be causing this? Or does someone have any proposed workaround (mega-kill switch, perhaps?)

• Managing multiple ssh keys

  I have a lot of ssh keys, they are all passphrase protected and managed by ssh-agent. As a result of this, I am now getting "Too many authentication failures" on some connections. As has been explained on this site before, this is because ssh will try all keys the agent throws at it. The proposed solution is to use IdentitiesOnly in the config, together with an IdentityFile. While this indeed stops offering wrong keys, it seems it completely disables the agent in full, so now I have to type the passphrase on every connection. I could not find clear info about this. Does IdentitiesOnly just disable getting keys from ssh-agent in full? Or should it just block out the keys that aren't mentioned? • Salary Negotiation; How Best to Broach the Subject? [closed]

  So I have an upcoming performance review / salary increase and I am at a point in which I believe I will need to negotiate a larger raise than what is to be proposed. As I suspect this may be the case I have been reading as much information on the subject (negotiation) as possible. I work for a great company and fortunately I work under some really talented and reasonable managers. Unfortunately, I am not sure how best to bring up the subject. I don't want to sound greedy and I don't want to start off on the wrong foot. For the sake of argument, assume that I am actually worth more than I am being paid at the moment and I would like to make a counter offer for a relatively large increase (say, boss says 4%, I would like to counter with 15%. I know that seems very large, but I believe I have a case for it.) My question to you, those who are/have been on the other side of this scenario, is how should I start the conversation? What approach would make you most receptive to my plea? I've never negotiated before and I just don't want to start off on the wrong foot. My direct manager is a very straightforward individual, so sugarcoating is not necessary here, but at the same time, I don't want to seem overly aggressive or demanding. • How do I make control-click in Opera open new tabs?

  In Opera, as opposed to all other modern browsers I know, control-click does not open a new tab. Moreover, I couldn't find any good way to configure this behavior. The best available option seems to be this. However, it's so hacky that it won't work on HTTPS sites unless you enable user javascript there, which doesn't seem like a good idea. There also seem to be other proposed solutions, but none of them seem to work. I'd like this because my laptop has no middle mouse-button, and I'm a creature of habit. Do people have any ideas (for the latest version, 10.50)? I'd like ctrl-click to open a background tab, but I can do with foreground. Thank you!

• Windows 7 doesn't recognize DVD drive

  I reinstalled Windows 7 (x64) because DVD drive stoped being recognized. At first it worked, I even got to burn a dvd. Some time later it misteriously dissapeared again. This question has been asked and answered many times on the Internet, but no proposed solution works for me. Please help! Any clues are gratefuly accepted! EDIT: I booted a live CD and succesfuly tried to burn a DVD. When I rebooted back to windows 7 the DVD drive was there. I burnt another DVD and it also works... I don't know how much it's gonna last... The drive is a TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L632H. FW Revision: HS02. It's parallel ATA.

• Please clarify how create/update happens against child entities of an aggregate root

  After much reading and thinking as I begin to get my head wrapped around DDD, I am a bit confused about the best practices for dealing with complex hierarchies under an aggregate root. I think this is a FAQ but after reading countless examples and discussions, no one is quite talking about the issue I'm seeing. If I am aligned with the DDD thinking, entities below the aggregate root should be immutable. This is the crux of my trouble, so if that isn't correct, that is why I'm lost. Here is a fabricated example...hope it holds enough water to discuss. Consider an automobile insurance policy (I'm not in insurance, but this matches the language I hear when on the phone w/ my insurance company). Policy is clearly an entity. Within the policy, let's say we have Auto. Auto, for the sake of this example, only exists within a policy (maybe you could transfer an Auto to another policy, so this is potential for an aggregate as well, which changes Policy...but assume it simpler than that for now). Since an Auto cannot exist without a Policy, I think it should be an Entity but not a root. So Policy in this case is an aggregate root. Now, to create a Policy, let's assume it has to have at least one auto. This is where I get frustrated. Assume Auto is fairly complex, including many fields and maybe a child for where it is garaged (a Location). If I understand correctly, a "create Policy" constructor/factory would have to take as input an Auto or be restricted via a builder to not be created without this Auto. And the Auto's creation, since it is an entity, can't be done beforehand (because it is immutable? maybe this is just an incorrect interpretation). So you don't get to say new Auto and then setX, setY, add(Z). If Auto is more than somewhat trivial, you end up having to build a huge hierarchy of builders and such to try to manage creating an Auto within the context of the Policy. One more twist to this is later, after the Policy is created and one wishes to add another Auto...or update an existing Auto. Clearly, the Policy controls this...fine...but Policy.addAuto() won't quite fly because one can't just pass in a new Auto (right!?). Examples say things like Policy.addAuto(VIN, make, model, etc.) but are all so simple that that looks reasonable. But if this factory method approach falls apart with too many parameters (the entire Auto interface, conceivably) I need a solution. From that point in my thinking, I'm realizing that having a transient reference to an entity is OK. So, maybe it is fine to have a entity created outside of its parent within the aggregate in a transient environment, so maybe it is OK to say something like: auto = AutoFactory.createAuto(); auto.setX auto.setY or if sticking to immutability, AutoBuilder.new().setX().setY().build() and then have it get sorted out when you say Policy.addAuto(auto) This insurance example gets more interesting if you add Events, such as an Accident with its PolicyReports or RepairEstimates...some value objects but most entities that are all really meaningless outside the policy...at least for my simple example. The lifecycle of Policy with its growing hierarchy over time seems the fundamental picture I must draw before really starting to dig in...and it is more the factory concept or how the child entities get built/attached to an aggregate root that I haven't seen a solid example of. I think I'm close. Hope this is clear and not just a repeat FAQ that has answers all over the place.

• Natural language processing - Ideas for beginner's projects

  Hi guys, I am a beginner in NLP and NLTK. I am very interested in NLP and hence joined a weekend course on AI in some local institution, which requires me to do a project for completion of the course, and I decided to do it in NLP. The problem is,the instructor is not good at all for this course (According to me she is just a charlatan) (or may not be very interested in teaching as this is her last batch here after which the institute is going to send her out). So I am stuck in a situation where where I got to finish this project in a month to one and half months period, but as a naive person in the field I am feeling it very difficult to comprehend the things required to decide on project. (Also, as I am working full time, I am not finding enough time to dedicate on this). I considered using NLTK toolkit in python for the project for following reasons. (1) Python is famous for ease of use, rapid prototyping and very active community (considering very short span of time I have, and as I am a C programmer by profession, I need a language that I can learn fast and is simple to use). (2) NLTk has good review, and extensive documentation and a very active community. So the problem is what project should I take up, so that I can learn something and will be able to finish project in time. (I know almost nothing in NLP, don't even know what exactly corpora is... :( ) So, please suggest me some topics that I should consider for the project. Regards, MicroKernel :)

• FindByIdentity in System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagment Memory Issues

  I'm working on an active directory managament application. In addition to the typical Create A New User, Enable/Disable an account, reset my password etc. it also managages application permissions for all of the clients web applications. Application management is handled by thousands of AD groups such as which are built from 3 letter codes for the application, section and site, there are also hundreds of AD groups which determine which applications and locations a coordinator can grant rights to. All of these groups in turn belong to other groups so I typically filter the groups list with the MemberOf property to find the groups that a user directly belongs to (or everyone has rights to do everything). I've made extensive use of the System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagment namespace using the FindByIdentity method in 31 places throughout the application. This method calls a private method FindPrincipalByIdentRefHelper on the internal ADStoreCtx class. A SearchResultCollection is created but not disposed so eventually typically once or twice a day the web server runs out of memory and all of the applications on the web server stop responsing until iis is reset because the resources used by the com objects aren't ever relased. There are places where I fall back to the underlying directory objects, but there are lot of places where I'm using the properties on the Principal - it's a vast improvement over using the esoteric ad property names in the .Net 2.0 Directory services code. I've contacted microsoft about the problem and it's been fixed in .Net 4.0 but they don't currently have plans to fix it in 3.5 unless there is intrest in the community about it. I only found information about it in a couple of places the MDSN documentation in the community content state's there is a memory leak at the bottom (guess I should have read that before using the the method) http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb345628.aspx And the class in question is internal and doesn't expose SearchResultsCollection outside the offending method so I can't get at the results to dispose them or inherit from the class and override the method. So my questions are Has anyone else encountered this problem? If so were you able to work around it? Do I have any option besides rewriting the application not using any of the .Net 3.5 active directory code? Thanks

• Vote on Pros and Cons of Java HTML to XML cleaners

  I am looking to allow HTML emails (and other HTML uploads) without letting in scripts and stuff. I plan to have a white list of safe tags and attributes as well as a whitelist of CSS tags and value regexes (to prevent automatic return receipt). I asked a question: Parse a badly formatted XML document (like an HTML file) I found there are many many ways to do this. Some systems have built in sanitizers (which I don't care so much about). This page is a very nice listing page but I get kinda lost http://java-source.net/open-source/html-parsers It is very important that the parsers never throw an exception. There should always be best guess results to the parse/clean. It is also very important that the result is valid XML that can be traversed in Java. I posted some product information and said Community Wiki. Please post any other product suggestions you like and say Community Wiki so they can be voted on. Also any comments or wiki edits on what part of a certain product is better and what is not would be greatly appreciated. (for example,, speed vs accuracy..) It seems that we will go with either jsoup (seems more active and up to date) or TagSoup (compatible with JDK4 and been around awhile). A +1 for any of these products would be if they could convert all style sheets into inline style on the elements.

  How do I get the Silverlight Add-On for Visual Studio 2010? And where can I find lots of example code? When the interent and html was new, one could find examples of how to build a website on a few trusted web sites. The same web sites might not be the best choice for looking for examples for Silverlight, I guess. What are the best web sites where you can look at examples -- and most importantly -- look at the source code of some examples of Silverlight? Back when MFC existed as a option that programmers might use to develop windows applications, a coder could look at a huge list of sample code and step through that code to find something that somewhat did what he was looking for and use that example code to build his own app. Is there anything like that for Silverlight? I have found the http://gallery.expression.microsoft.com/ Expression Blend Gallery and I have found the http://www.silverlight.net/community/samples/silverlight-samples/ Silverlight dot net community samples. • Zend Framework or CakePHP?

  My group is going to attempt to build a new CMS from scratch, designed to serve the needs of our organization. It should be noted that none of us have any formal programming education, but we've picked up this and that from developing different websites, among others the one our community uses now. We've decided to program the new CMS in PHP, with total MVC seperation. Not wanting to re-invent all the little cogs and wheels needed for such a potentially large project as this, we've been looking into using a PHP framework, and some googling and blog-surfing landed us in a discussion: Zend vs Cake? Anyone have any useful input here? Also, any other tips for embarking on this project would be appreciated. (Except for suggestions for existing CMSes, we know they're out there.) EDIT: It seems I was a bit unclear. None of us are NEW to PHP - in fact, we all have fairly extensive experience from previous projects, including the current solution our community's website runs on which we built ourselves. The decision to not use an existing CMS is a very informed one, so although I appreciate all the good suggestions we really are going to do this ourselves. So. Zend vs Cake?

• Extension Methods and Application Code

  I have seen plenty of online guidelines for authoring extension methods, usually along these lines: 1) Avoid authoring extension methods when practical - prefer other approaches first (e.g. regular static methods). 2) Don't author extension methods to extend code you own or currently develop. Instead, author them to extend 3rd party or BCL code. But I have the impression that a couple more guidelines are either implied or advisable. What does the community think of these two additional guidelines: A) Prefer to author extension methods to contain generic functionality rather than application-specific logic. (This seems to follow from guideline #2 above) B) An extension method should be sizeable enough to justify itself (preferably at least 5 lines of code in length). Item (B) is intended to discourage a develoer from writing dozens of extension methods (totalling X lines of code) to refactor or replace what originally was already about X lines of inline code. Perhaps item (B) is badly qualified, or even misinformed about how a one line extension method is actually powerful and justified. I'm curious to know. But if item (B) is somehow dismissed by the community, I must admist I'm still particularly interested in feedback on guideline (A).

I know over time that will change and we'll want to swap in more dynamic information, so I've decided to go ahead and build a web application using ASP.NET MVC2 and the Spark view engine. There will be a couple of controllers that will have to do actual work (like in the /products area), but most of it will be static. I want my designer to be able to build and modify the site without having to ask me to write a new controller or route every time they decide to add or move a page. So if he wants to add a "http://mysite.com/News" page he can just create a "News" folder under Views and put an index.spark page within it. Then later if he decides he wants a /News/Community page, he can drop a community.spark file within that folder and have it work. I'm able to have a view without a specific action by making my controllers override HandleUnknownAction, but I still have to create a controller for each of these folders. It seems silly to have to add an empty controller and recompile every time they decide to add an area to the site. Is there any way to make this easier, so I only have to write a controller and recompile if there's actual logic to be done? Some sort of "master" controller that will handle any requests where there was no specific controller defined?

• Codeplex/Sourceforge for internal use

  I'm looking for a free/open source collaborative project manager that can be deployed internally in my workplace that would act similar to Codeplex or Sourceforge. Does anyone know of something like this, and if so do you have experience with it. Requirements: Open Source or Free Locally Deployable Has the same types of features found in Sourceforge / Codeplex Issue/Feature Tracking Community Interaction (ie. Voting, Roles, etc.) SCM Integration (Optional) .NET/Windows Friendly (Optional) Every business ends up having internal utilities, and domain specific apps that developers create to make life easier. Given the input of the internal developer community they have the potential to become much better (can you say GMail...), and I would simply like to foster such an environment internally by providing an easy place for that interaction to take place. UPDATE: So I like what I am seeing in both Trac and GForge, but both are heavily geared towards UNIX/Subversion environments. I should have specified this, but we are a MS shop from top to bottom. How practical do you think it is going to be to try and use these in a MS .NET environment? Would that be like trying to shove a square peg through a round hole?

• PHPUnit reporting "Aborted" no matter what tests are run

  Having a weird problem with PHPUnit. We're using PHPUnit as part of a continuous integration environment, that contains one app written using Zend Framework and one app written using CodeIgniter. Unit tests run just fine under Zend Framework, but whenever I run the tests for CodeIgniter using fooStack's CIUnit bridge, I always get the same problem at the end: PHPUnit 3.4.14 by Sebastian Bergmann. ............... . Time: 1 second, Memory: 7.00Mb OK (16 tests, 14 assertions) Aborted First off, I do not know what those empty spaces between the . means. Secondly, no matter what test I run (all of them or each one separately) I get the same Aborted message at the very end. The tests themselves do not contain any exit or die statements. When I run the same version of PHPUnit on my laptop (running OS-X Snow Leopard and same version of Zend Server Community Edition) I do not get that aborted message. Running PHP 5.3.2 on Ubuntu installed using Zend Server Community Edition. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

• Web development: Haskell or Scheme

  I would like to to choose one of these languages for building web applications. I'm not interested in framework per say, but have the following needs: Rapid development. Easy to scale. Strong community for the web. Quick and easy to deploy. I'm very familiar with Haskell, and have some familiarity with scheme (in particular PLT). Scheme appeals to me as good candidate for web development due to it's simple syntax which is homogenous across libraries. I state this despite my subjective opinion that Haskell is a 'cleaner' language. Haskell web apps seem to require learning and building a patchwork of different combinator libraries. On the plus side, I realise this can be quite expressive, although I'd prefer to eliminate impedance mismatches where possible. While scheme-plt looks to be a good fit, I can find but one example of it being used in the "real world". Haskell doesn't seem to fair too much better here, but there seems to be a bigger community behind the web side. Please help me make up my mind. For the most part I'm interested in real-world use cases.
