• Many Different Things Rolled into a Ball

  Yeah I know I don’t blog much anymore, because life has taken me places that don’t involve the interwebs unfortunately.  I am in the midst of planning two events, starting a non for profit, creating more sessions for various conferences, submitting to various conferences, working a 40 hour a week job, attempting to hang out with boyfriend/friends/family.  So you can see that list does not include this blog sadly that’s how it goes sometimes.  The bottom piece very important over any of the top pieces.  I haven’t seen St. Louis in a while and I get to go back.  I was gone from home for MVP Summit and Best Practices Conference, so the boyfriend and cat didn’t get to see me either for a bit.  Then you have to add in the whole toilet being broken fiasco this week.  Maintenance really thought it would be cool to turn off the ability to flush.  I mean who does that?  Then when we call the owner he comes by turns it on and we figure it was an accident, because well the next day no one came by to tell us there was a leak.  It was all kinds of strangeness and involved me running to other people’s toilets.  As Dan Usher would say, I was a sad panda for a few days.  So I guess I wanted to post a few thoughts here just because I can.  I do not like multiple content editor webparts embedded with html files in numerous pages doing the same thing.  I will tell you why I don’t like these particular webparts and the way they are being used.  First off if you have a bunch of pages with script includes it’s about time you should just dump them into the masterpage.  Why bother finding all 20 pages and changing those pages when you can just use a single masterpage that already exists? The other thing that is bothering me days is screen scraping.  Just don’t do it, because in 2010 you will find the UI is substantially slower.  I understand you are new and you have no idea what to do.  You are also using 2007 am I right?  So then you need to go to codeplex.com and type in a search for SPServices.  Download it, use it, love it and then have it’s babies (well maybe don’t go so far this is not the GRID in Tron). If you have a ton of constants in your code why did you not go in and create a webpart with a bunch of properties and/or link to a configuration list hidden in the browser?  This type of property and list could help you out in the long run.  The power users and administrators can now change the control without you having to compile it over and over again.  It’s good stuff.  Also, you can change the control without compiling it, especially in 2007 where you have to do a farm solution.  In 2010 you can do a sandbox solution I guess, but shouldn’t you make it as easy and supportable as possible for other users? In conclusion I’m an angry person when it comes to viewing something repeatedly and analyzing it in a system.  Now we will move on to the next topic…MVP Summit…So yeah I can’t really talk about particulars, but I can talk about my experience as a person.  Don’t build something up to be cooler than it is only to be dropped from your 10,000 foot perch.  My experience was great, but the content overall was something to be desired.  It’s ok I got to meet a lot of people I would not have met if I had not gone.  Some of it was surreal, such as product group members showing up and talking to us.  It was pretty neat.  Plus I never had the chance to get to that mythical MS Office in Redmond.  Prior to Summit it was like Rainbow Brites unicorn trying taunting me on television when I was a kid.  So I guess with all that said I give it a B.  It was awesome in some way, but lacking in other ways.  The cool part is that I got to go.  Would I have lived without going? Yes, but it was still cool. I could prattle on about other things and make this post massive, but I’m going to pass and give myself a piece of Sunday to play Rockband and do 800 other things.  I hope the two of you who read this blog are well.  I’ll catch you all at another juncture.  Have a good weekend and varying holidays in between. • How is an HTML5 game sold?

  (I know this site doesn't give legal advice, but what I'm dealing here with isn't anything serious at all. Also, I apologize to JP for being annoying over this.) Someone found a game I made on the Internet, and expressed interest in buying it. We agreed upon a price, and, in the meantime, I removed the game's source from the Internet, just to be sure. Now, I'm wondering what to do next. These are the terms: He gets the game's source code, and only that, without the graphics (which weren't made by me). He gets the right to develop and sell the game. I get to keep the ownership of the original game, meaning that I can use it in my portfolio when applying for jobs, for example. The game gets to stay on its original site. But I am not sure how can I legally realize this. Which license can I use?

• How many vertices are needed to draw reasonably good-looking terrain?

  I have some pretty expensive code in my terrain vertex shader, and I am trying to figure out if it will still be fast enough. I haven't yet developed a level-of-detail system for my terrain rendering, but I can easily benchmark my code by just drawing mock triangles. My problem is, how do I know how many vertices to test with? Are there for example rendering engines that will tell me how many terrain vertices are currently on-screen? Or maybe it is possible to create a formula that will give me an estimate based on screen resolution?

• Python or HTML5/JS for game development on 2014 [on hold]

  So I've decided to give game development a go. I have experience on php/html/css/sql/js(jquery) so learning a new language shouldn't be as hard. I was reading that python and javascript are both nice for simple 2d non-intensive games. I found that python has this library/engine called PyGame but I realized that it was last updated 4 years ago. People still use this? And for javascript, I found libraries like 'pixi.js', 'melon.js' and 'cocos2d'. My goal is to make 2D games that would require the same performance as terraria, realm of the mad god, castle crashers.. and all those types of games. Taking into consideration, that I do want an updated library, what language of this two would be best to choose and what library to grab for it? Thanks in advance, sorry if question is broad. Let me know and I can edit to add more.

• Is there a global "low resolution" filter for OpenGL?

  I'm trying to learn a little about OpenGL, so I'm making a simple 2D game (with OpenTK), and so far it's coming along well. I thought it would be fun to give it that, for lack of a better word, retropixelated look of games from the early nineties. I figured it would be an easy thing to do -- simply draw everything at half its normal size and scale up with no anti-aliasing. But I can't find any resources on how to do this. I can set the min/mag filters of my textures to nearest and that works fine for my sprites, but I'm using lots of primitives and I'd like the effect to apply to them as well. The one idea I had was to draw everything at half size, then somehow copy the render buffer to a texture, then render that texture full-size, but I don't know how to do that, and it seems like there must be a better way. Can anyone help me out?

• Is there an alternative to javascript for the web that can do multi-threading and synchronous execution?

  I would like to program web applications as I do with desktop programming languages, where the code is synchronously executed and browser doesn't freeze when doing loops. Yes I know there are workarounds using callbacks and setTimeout, but they are all workarounds after all and they don't give the same flexibility when programming in the orthodox way I've been looking at Dart as a possibilty, but I can't seem to find where it says it can do either of these. The same with haxe, emscript, and the hundreds of other converters that try to circumvent javascript. In the end it gets converted to Javascript so you ultimately have to be conscious about asynchronous/multi threading.

• How can I host a website on a dynamically-assigned IP address?

  I recently upgraded my internet to the point that it is much faster and more reliable than my current webhost. I would like to move my current domain to be hosted at home, but my IP address is dynamic. As far as I know, I only get a new IP when I restart my modem and or router (which is almost never) or when cable one (my ISP) pushes out a firmware update (rarely). There are a few ways I can see doing this: Convince my ISP to give me a static IP Assign my router my current IP to force a static IP (which might work?) Set my DNS record to my current IP address and update it on the rare occasions that it changes. Obviously I'm hoping that the first one works, but I don't want to pay a lot of extra money (if that's what it takes) to get a static IP address. Which of these options will work most reliably?

• bash script to login to webpage

  I am trying to login into this page but I cannot for the life of me get it to work. I have to login to this site when i connect to my school's wifi in order to start a session. So far ive tried to use bash and cUrl to achieve this but have only achieved to give myself a headache. will cUrl work or am I on the wrong track? Any help is greatly appreciated! • How to setup NX server and client?

  I installed NX server on my desktop and able to run it successfully following this tutorial: http://michigantelephone.wordpress.com/2007/10/15/how-to-install-nx-server-and-client-under-ubuntukubuntu-linux/ When i run the command sudo /usr/NX/bin/nxserver –status I am seeing the following output : NX 900 Connecting to server .. NX 110 NX Server is running. NX 999 Bye. It means i have setup NX server correctly.. But on other machine when i open NX client it is asking for hostname..what name should i give there? Every tutorial is explaining about how to install and start NX server but not about how to connect to the server from client.. Could you guys please help me? Thanks in Advance Deter

• How do I get Poulsbo (GMA500) drivers to work?

  I'm trying to get working the Poulbo driver under Ubuntu 9.10. I've installed poulsbo-driver-2d poulsbo-driver-3d poulsbo-config packages from sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gma500/ppa. The packages installation is working. After I have to put in xorg.conf driver "psb". Then I reboot and I have no more display. I have to switch back to vesa in order to display back. Can someone give me some kind of solution?

• Better way to do AI Behavior in AS3/Flixel

  I'm making a game in Flixel and I need to program an NPC. It's rapidly turning more complex than I expected. I was wondering if there are any best practices, tutorials or examples that you can refer me to, to see how this is done. I can probably hack it together, which is what I always do, but it would be nice if I can make it maintanable and can add stuff later on. Here's screenshot to give you an idea: The butler will be an NPC that will follow you, or guide you, and talk to you the whole time. EDIT: More specifically: What I have now is a long list of IF statements in the update loop of the butler (about 8 different cases), and all I have covered is his walking behavior. I want him to comment on things and sometimes switch his main behavior to be more aggresive or distant,... Is there any way to keep track of this, or is complex code with many many nested if statements the way to go?

I wish the SQL Server team would give it as much love. Service Broker is a wonderful technology, let down by poor resourcing. • Are there any formalized/mathematical theories of software testing?

  Googling "software testing theory" only seems to give theories in the soft sense of the word; I have not been able to find anything that would classify as a theory in the mathematical, information theoretical or some other scientific field's sense. What I'm looking for is something that formalizes what testing is, the notions used, what a test case is, the feasibility of testing something, the practicality of testing something, the extent to which something should be tested, formal definition/explanation of code coverage, etc. UPDATE: Also, I'm not sure, intuitively, about the connection between formal verification and what I asked, but there's clearly some sort of connection.

  I recently went on a couple of interviews and all of them asked a one or two design questions, like how you would design a chess, monopoly, and so on. I didn't do good on those since I am a college student and lack of the experience of implementing big and complex systems. I figure the only way to improve my design capability is to read lots of others' code and try to implement myself. Therefore, for those companies that ask these questions, what are their real goals in this? I figure most of college grads start off working in a team guided by a senior leader in their first jobs. They might not have lots of design experience fresh out of colleges. Anyone could give pointers about how to practice those skills? Thank you very much

• Is there a more intelligent way to do this besides a long chain of if statements or switch?

  I'm implementing an IRC bot that receives a message and I'm checking that message to determine which functions to call. Is there a more clever way of doing this? It seems like it'd quickly get out of hand after I got up to like 20 commands. • Kepler orbit : get position on the orbit over time

  I'm developing a space-simulation related game, and I am having some trouble implementing the movement of binary stars, like this: The two stars orbit their centroid, and their trajectories are ellipses. I basically know how to determine the angular velocity at any position, but not the angular velocity over time. So, for a given angle, I can very easily compute the stars position (cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orbit_equation). I'd want to get the stars position over time. The parametric equations of the ellipse works but doesn't give the correct speed : { X(t) = a×cos(t) ; Y(t) = b×sin(t) }. Is it possible, and how can it be done?

• Junior software developer - How to understand web aplications in depth?

  I am currently a junior developer in web applications and specifically in asp.net mvc technology. My problem is that the c# senior developer in the company has no experience with this technology and I try to learn without any guidance. I went through all tutorials (e.g music store), codeplex projects and also read pro asp.net mvc 4. However, most of the examples are about crud and e-commerce applications. What I don't understand is how dependency injection fits in web applications (I have realized that is not only used for facilitating unit testing) or when i should use a custom model binder or how to model the business logic when there is already a database schema in place. I read the forum quite often and it would very helpful if some experienced developers could give me an insight about how to proceed. Do I need to read some books to understand the overall idea behind web applications? And what kind of application should I start building myself - I don't think it would be useful to create similar examples with the tutorials.

  I'm trying to add windows 7 for my new 12.10 grub bootloader. None of the things worked out; such as .. copying bootx64.efi methods, I'm getting this output: grub-probe --target=fs_uuid /boot/efi/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sda1. • Creating the Business Card Request InfoPath Form

  Business Card Request Demo Files Back in January I spoke at SharePoint Saturday Virginia Beach about InfoPath forms and Web Part deployment.  Below is some of the information and details regarding the form I created for the session.  There are many blogs and Microsoft articles on how to create a basic form so I won’t repeat that information here.   This blog will just explain a few of the options I chose when creating the solutions for SPS Virginia Beach.  The above link contains the zipped package files of the two InfoPath forms(no code solution and coded solution), the list template for the Location list I used, and the PowerPoint deck.  If you plan to use these templates, you will need to update the forms to work within your own environments (change data connections, code links, etc.).  Also, you must have the SharePoint Enterprise version, with InfoPath Services configured in order to use the Web Browser enabled forms. So what are the requirements for this template? Business Card Request Form Template Design Plan: Gather user information and requirements for card Pull in as much user information as possible. Use data from the user profile web services as a data source Show and hide fields as necessary for requirements Create multiple views – one for those submitting the form and Another view for the executive assistants placing the orders. Browser based form integrated into SharePoint team site Submitted directly to form library The base form was created using the blank template.  The table and rows were added using Insert tab and selecting Custom Table.  The use of tables is a great way to make sure everything lines up.  You do have to split the tables from time to time.  If you’ve ever split cells and then tried to re-align one to find that you impacted the others, you know why.  Here is what the base form looks like in InfoPath.   Show and hide fields as necessary for requirements You will notice I also used Sections within the form.  These show or hide depending on options selected or whether or not fields are blank.  This is a great way to prevent your users from feeling overwhelmed with a large form (this one wouldn’t apply).  Although not used in this one, you can also use various views with a tab interface.  I’ll show that in another post. Gather user information and requirements for card Pull in as much user information as possible. Use data from the user profile web services as a data source Utilizing rules you can load data when the form initiates (Data tab, Form Load).  Anything you can automate is always appreciated by the user as that is data they don’t have to enter.  For example, loading their user id or other user information on load: Always keep in mind though how much data you load and the method for loading that data (through rules, code, etc.).  They have an impact on form performance.  The form will take longer to load if you bring in a ton of data from external sources.  Laura Rogers has a great blog post on using the User Information List to load user information.   If the user has logged into SharePoint, then this can be used quite effectively and without a huge performance hit.   What I have found is that using the User Profile service via code behind or the Web Service “GetUserProfileByName” (as above) can take more time to load the user data.  Just food for thought. You must add the data connection in order for the above rules to work.  You can connect to the data connection through the Data tab, Data Connections or select Manage Data Connections link which appears under the main data source.  The data connections can be SharePoint lists or libraries, SQL data tables, XML files, etc.  Create multiple views – one for those submitting the form and Another view for the executive assistants placing the orders. You can also create multiple views for the users to enhance their experience.  Once they’ve entered the information and submitted their request for business cards, they don’t really need to see the main data input screen any more.  They just need to view what they entered. From the Page Design tab, select New View and give the view a name.  To review the existing views, click the down arrow under View: The ReviewView shows just what the user needs and nothing more: Once you have everything configured, the form should be tested within a Test SharePoint environment before final deployment to production.  This validates you don’t have any rules or code that could impact the server negatively. Submitted directly to form library   You will need to know the form library that you will be submitting to when publishing the template.  Configure the Submit data connection to connect to this library.  There is already one configured in the sample,  but it will need to be updated to your environment prior to publishing. The Design template is different from the Published template.  While both have the .XSN extension, the published template contains all the “package” information for the form.  The published form is what is loaded into Central Admin, not the design template. Browser based form integrated into SharePoint team site In Central Admin, under General Settings, select Manage Form Templates.  Upload the published form template and Activate it to a site collection. Now it is available as a content type to select in the form library.  Some documentation on publishing form templates:  Technet – Manage administrator approved form templates And that’s all our base requirements.  Hope this helps to give a good start.

• Using C++11 for cross-platform Game Engine Development

  Note: This is not a 'give your opinion' question about C++03 and C++11. Our game engine, written in C++03, is designed to be compiled on Windows, OSX and iOS. Linux support is planned for the (very) near future. Our experience is limited when it comes to consoles, which is why I am asking this question. Currently, we are debating whether switching to C++11 and using non-compatible features of the C++11 standard could pose a problem in the near future when we need to port our engine to any of the current gen consoles (perhaps the compilers supported by some console(s) do not support C++11 yet? We don't know...). So, game developers who have experience across multiple platforms and consoles, do you think we should stick to C++03 until the new generation of consoles arrive and most everybody has switched to C++11 standard (have they already?). Or are most consoles using/support compilers (VC++, GCC or variants?) that are already supporting C++11 features?

• No dual boot option, no boot priority order

  I installed Ubuntu yesterday. I partitioned my C: when it was asked to give memory allocation to Ubuntu. The version is 12.04. I was able to install Ubuntu completely: Ubuntu is successfully installed. Restart you computer. I restarted and there was no Ubuntu option. Windows 7 also asked for a boot repair. So I did that too. I then wanted to change my boot priority order to Ubuntu but couldn't find it in BIOS section. I allotted 20GB to Ubuntu and it is deducted from C: but I couldn't see the partitioned drive in Windows 7. Wubi was working fine before on PC with dual boot option. I used Linux Live key creator to boot my PC through pen drive.

• New to world of Ubuntu

  I've been running Ubuntu 13.04 since June 2013, and upgrading to 13.10 as we speak.(Note I own total 3 laptops.) My goal is to have one complete Linux machine and one dual boot, and third well (he is a newer Lenovo with Windows 8.1 and is touch screen.) but I want to learn Ubuntu life and further myself with using it for everyday use, but I'm not very fluid in Linux usage and hoping to find people who have a love for teaching others how to be one with the BEST OS IN THE WORLD! Hope I've got few people wanting to teach or give good instruction for success. ~Mike Cheney~
