  • Good ways to dynamically generate the start image of an iPhone/iPad app

    - by Dr Dork
I'm self-learning iPhone development and I see that one of the aspects of an iPhone/iPad app is the start image that gets displayed when your app is run. I'd like my start image to display some basic info about the user when the app is launched, but that info has to first be collected by the user when the app is first run. That tells me that I either need to dynamically generate the start image after the user enters their information or I need to place a label of some sort on top of my static start image in order to accomplish this. The first time the app launched and before the user enters their info, the start image can be anything or nothing at all, I'm not concerned about this. So, my two questions are this... Can you place controls, like a label, on top of the start image when your app is launched? If not, what's a good approach to dynamically generating the start image after the app is launched for the first time and the user info is collected? Thanks so much in advance for your help! I'm going to begin researching this question right now.

  • Android: Determine when an app is being finalized vs destroyed for screen orientation change

    - by Matt
Hi all, I am relatively new to the Android world and am having some difficultly understanding how the whole screen orientation cycle works. I understand that when the orientation changes from portrait to landscape or vice versa the activity is destroyed and then re-created. Thus all the code in the onCreate function will run again. So here's my situation: I have an app that I am working on where it logs into a website, retrieves data, and displays it to the user. While this is all done in background threads, the code that starts these threads is in the onCreate function. Now, the problem lies in that whenever the user changes the screen orientation, the app will log in, retrieve the data, and display it to the user again. What I would like to do is set a boolean that tells the app if it is logged in or not so it knows whether or not it must log in when the onCreate function is called. So long as the app is in memory the HttpClient will exist and contain the cookies from logging the user in but when the app is killed by the system those will go away. So I would assume that I need to do something like setting the logged in boolean to false when the app is killed but since onDestroy is called when the screen is rotated how is this possible? I also looked into the finalize function and isFinishing() but those seem to not be working. Shorter version: How can I distinguish between when an app is being killed from memory from when an activity is being rotated and different code for each event? Any help or a point in the right direction is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  • A few questions about a Rails model for a simple addressbook app

    - by user284194
I have a Rails application that lists information about local services. My objectives for this model are as follows: 1. Require the name and tag_list fields. 2. Require one or more of the tollfreephone, phone, phone2, mobile, fax, email or website fields. 3. If the paddress field has a value, then encode it with the Geokit plugin. Here is my entry.rb model: class Entry < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :name, :tag_list validates_presence_of :tollfreephone or :phone or :phone2 or :mobile or :fax or :email or :website acts_as_taggable_on :tags acts_as_mappable :auto_geocode=>{:field=>:paddress, :error_message=>'Could not geocode physical address'} before_save :geocode_paddress validate :required_info def required_info unless phone or phone2 or tollfreephone or mobile or fax or email or website errors.add_to_base "Please have at least one form of contact information." end end private def geocode_paddress #if paddress_changed? geo=Geokit::Geocoders::MultiGeocoder.geocode (paddress) errors.add(:paddress, "Could not Geocode address") if ! geo.success self.lat, self.lng = geo.lat,geo.lng if geo.success #end end end Requiring name and tag_list work, but requiring one (or more) of the tollfreephone, phone, phone2, mobile, fax, email or website fields does not. As for encoding with Geokit, in order to save a record with the model I have to enter an address. Which is not the behavior I want. I would like it to not require the paddress field, but if the paddress field does have a value, it should encode the geocode. As it stands, it always tries to geocode the incoming entry. The commented out "if paddress_changed?" was not working and I could not find something like "if paddress_exists?" that would work. Help with any of these issues would be greatly appreciated. I posted three questions pertaining to my model because I'm not sure if they are preventing each other from working. Thank you for reading my questions.

  • preparing SMS app for Android KitKat

    - by Pmsc
in agreement with the recent post from Android Developers http://android-developers.blogspot.pt/2013/10/getting-your-sms-apps-ready-for-kitkat.html ,I was trying to prepare my app to the new android version, but encountered a problem with the part they suggest to create a dialog to let the user set the app as the default application to handle SMS's : Android Developers Post public class ComposeSmsActivity extends Activity { @Override protected void onResume() { super.onResume(); final String myPackageName = getPackageName(); if (!Telephony.Sms.getDefaultSmsPackage(this).equals(myPackageName)) { // App is not default. // Show the "not currently set as the default SMS app" interface View viewGroup = findViewById(R.id.not_default_app); viewGroup.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE); // Set up a button that allows the user to change the default SMS app Button button = (Button) findViewById(R.id.change_default_app); button.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() { public void onClick(View v) { Intent intent = new Intent(Telephony.Sms.Intents.ACTION_CHANGE_DEFAULT); intent.putExtra(Telephony.Sms.Intents.EXTRA_PACKAGE_NAME, myPackageName); startActivity(intent); } }); } else { // App is the default. // Hide the "not currently set as the default SMS app" interface View viewGroup = findViewById(R.id.not_default_app); viewGroup.setVisibility(View.GONE); } } } the code itself in pretty much straightforward, but I'm unable to access to Telephony.Sms.getDefaultSmsPackage because it says that Telephony cannot be resolved, and I can't find any import or declaration that would fix that. Can anyone please help? Thanks in advanced.

  • After downloading an application with two Launcher components from the Marketplace, clicking "Open"

    - by user267728
    Create a sample application with two launcher icons. For example, two components such as: <application ...> <activity ... android:name="TestActivity01"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" /> <category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" /> </intent-filter> </activity> <activity ... android:name="TestActivity02"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" /> <category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" /> </intent-filter> </activity> </application> Either install the application via downloading from the Marketplace, or via AppInstaller. When the message box asks you if you would like to run the application, an exception is thrown: 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): android.content.ActivityNotFoundException: Unable to find explicit activity class {com.xxx.xxx/com.android.internal.app.ResolverActivity}; have you declared this activity in your AndroidManifest.xml? 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at android.app.Instrumentation.checkStartActivityResult(Instrumentation.java:1 480) 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at android.app.Instrumentation.execStartActivity(Instrumentation.java:1454) 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at android.app.Activity.startActivityForResult(Activity.java:2660) 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at android.app.Activity.startActivity(Activity.java:2704) 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at com.android.packageinstaller.InstallAppDone.onClick(InstallAppDone.java:105 ) 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at android.view.View.performClick(View.java:2344) 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at android.view.View.onTouchEvent(View.java:4133) 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at android.widget.TextView.onTouchEvent(TextView.java:6504) 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at android.view.View.dispatchTouchEvent(View.java:3672) 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:882) 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:882) 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:882) 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchTouchEvent(ViewGroup.java:882) 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow$DecorView.superDispatchTouchEv ent(PhoneWindow.java:1712) 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow.superDispatchTouchEvent(PhoneW indow.java:1202) 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at android.app.Activity.dispatchTouchEvent(Activity.java:1987) 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow$DecorView.dispatchTouchEvent(P honeWindow.java:1696) 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at android.view.ViewRoot.handleMessage(ViewRoot.java:1658) 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:99) 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:123) 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:4203) 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:521) 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java: 791) 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:549) 02-03 16:42:44.270: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(395): at dalvik.system.NativeStart.main(Native Method) The crash happens because com.android.internal.app.ResolverActivity is trying to find a (single) component which resolves the following intent: <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" /> <category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" /> Please note that this has been tested BOTH with the AppInstaller, and the actual Marketplace on a real device.

  • Google MapView doesn't work after signed the app.

    - by user164589
Hi guys, I am facing to android application signing problem. My application contains Google MapView. When I compile the app and run on the emulator, MapView works fine. But signed the app, MapView doesn't work. I've get Google Map API. This works on the simulator. I could sign the app once 2 months ago. Then I've upgraded the app. Now I need to sign the app again. Actually I don't know why signed app's mapView doesn't work. How to fix it ? Please advice. I used following steps when sign the app: Run Eclipse. Select the project. Right Click - Android Tools - Export Signed Application Package - Then Filled forms. (In forms, Validity years: 200, and all passwords are same.) Can you suggest me ? Thanks in advance.

  • Bug on submitted app binary but not in the simulator - CALayer position contains NaN

    - by Jonathan Thurft
    I submitted my app to the App Store where is ready to download. I've since then received some interesting crash reports when people select an image from the ImagePicker in one of my views. This bug (see below) makes the app crash. I was wondering 2 things. Can anyone spot the problem in the code below? How do you deal with bugs that are only in the App Binary but do not show up when trying to recreate them on the dev environment? - I can make the app crash with the Binary that is on the app store but when I do the same on the simulator or on my test phone the app works perfectly.. The Crash report in BugSense CALayer position contains NaN: [798 nan] Class: CALayerInvalidGeometry 0x00120e99 -[imageCroppingViewController imagePickerController:didFinishPickingMediaWithInfo:] (imageCroppingViewController.m:126) + 163481 The Code - (void) imagePickerController:(UIImagePickerController *)picker didFinishPickingMediaWithInfo:(NSDictionary *)info { UIImage *image = [info objectForKey:UIImagePickerControllerOriginalImage]; imageView.image = image; CGRect rect; rect.size.width = image.size.width; rect.size.height = image.size.height; imageView.center = scrollView.center; [imageView setFrame:rect]; scrollView.contentSize = imageView.frame.size; self.navigationController.navigationBar.hidden = NO; [myPicker.view removeFromSuperview]; }

  • App Crashing Inspite of Being ARC Enabled

    - by proctr
I have been working on an iOS App for sometime now and its almost ready to submit. However, when I gave it to few people for testing purposes (running iOS 5)..they reported cases where the app crashes and the home screen is displayed on the phone OR a frozen app screen appears with no response whatsoever The app is ARC enabled and Xcode shows no warnings. So, I'm relli tensed about what's going wrong. I have declared properties in the following fashion: @property (nonatomic) IBOutlet UILabel *devCountLabel; @property (nonatomic) IBOutlet UIView *splashView; Likewise other properties are declared. Could anyone provide a solution ASAP. It is mainly a network based app and thus, CoreData usage is minimum.. Anyway, I'm running out of time..So Please provide a fix asap..oh and thanks a ton for it. PS: The App doesn't crash in the simulator, so I'm guessing it has something related to memory. And the crashes are random. So, repeating a set of steps to reproduce the crash doesn't help either. For Eg. When I click a button, modalViewControllerAnimation results in normal case. Now this occurs as expected most of the time and freezes the app other times.

  • Ideas for multiplatform encrypted java mobile storage system

    - by Fernando Miguélez
Objective I am currently designing the API for a multiplatform storage system that would offer same interface and capabilities accross following supported mobile Java Platforms: J2ME. Minimum configuration/profile CLDC 1.1/MIDP 2.0 with support for some necessary JSRs (JSR-75 for file storage). Android. No minimum platform version decided yet, but rather likely could be API level 7. Blackberry. It would use the same base source of J2ME but taking advantage of some advaced capabilities of the platform. No minimum configuration decided yet (maybe 4.6 because of 64 KB limitation for RMS on 4.5). Basically the API would sport three kind of stores: Files. These would allow standard directory/file manipulation (read/write through streams, create, mkdir, etc.). Preferences. It is a special store that handles properties accessed through keys (Similar to plain old java properties file but supporting some improvements such as different value data types such as SharedPreferences on Android platform) Local Message Queues. This store would offer basic message queue functionality. Considerations Inspired on JSR-75, all types of stores would be accessed in an uniform way by means of an URL following RFC 1738 conventions, but with custom defined prefixes (i.e. "file://" for files, "prefs://" for preferences or "queue://" for message queues). The address would refer to a virtual location that would be mapped to a physical storage object by each mobile platform implementation. Only files would allow hierarchical storage (folders) and access to external extorage memory cards (by means of a unit name, the same way as in JSR-75, but that would not change regardless of underlying platform). The other types would only support flat storage. The system should also support a secure version of all basic types. The user would indicate it by prefixing "s" to the URL (i.e. "sfile://" instead of "file://"). The API would only require one PIN (introduced only once) to access any kind of secure object types. Implementation issues For the implementation of both plaintext and encrypted stores, I would use the functionality available on the underlying platforms: Files. These are available on all platforms (J2ME only with JSR-75, but it is mandatory for our needs). The abstract File to actual File mapping is straight except for addressing issues. RMS. This type of store available on J2ME (and Blackberry) platforms is convenient for Preferences and maybe Message Queues (though depending on performance or size requirements these could be implemented by means of normal files). SharedPreferences. This type of storage, only available on Android, would match Preferences needs. SQLite databases. This could be used for message queues on Android (and maybe Blackberry). When it comes to encryption some requirements should be met: To ease the implementation it will be carried out on read/write operations basis on streams (for files), RMS Records, SharedPreferences key-value pairs, SQLite database columns. Every underlying storage object should use the same encryption key. Handling of encrypted stores should be the same as the unencrypted counterpart. The only difference (from the user point of view) accessing an encrypted store would be the addressing. The user PIN provides access to any secure storage object, but the change of it would not require to decrypt/re-encrypt all the encrypted data. Cryptographic capabilities of underlying platform should be used whenever it is possible, so we would use: J2ME: SATSA-CRYPTO if it is available (not mandatory) or lightweight BoncyCastle cryptographic framework for J2ME. Blackberry: RIM Cryptographic API or BouncyCastle Android: JCE with integraced cryptographic provider (BouncyCastle?) Doubts Having reached this point I was struck by some doubts about what solution would be more convenient, taking into account the limitation of the plataforms. These are some of my doubts: Encryption Algorithm for data. Would AES-128 be strong and fast enough? What alternatives for such scenario would you suggest? Encryption Mode. I have read about the weakness of ECB encryption versus CBC, but in this case the first would have the advantage of random access to blocks, which is interesting for seek functionality on files. What type of encryption mode would you choose instead? Is stream encryption suitable for this case? Key generation. There could be one key generated for each storage object (file, RMS RecordStore, etc.) or just use one for all the objects of the same type. The first seems "safer", though it would require some extra space on device. In your opinion what would the trade-offs of each? Key storage. For this case using a standard JKS (or PKCS#12) KeyStore file could be suited to store encryption keys, but I could also define a smaller structure (encryption-transformation / key data / checksum) that could be attached to each storage store (i.e. using addition files with the same name and special extension for plain files or embedded inside other types of objects such as RMS Record Stores). What approach would you prefer? And when it comes to using a standard KeyStore with multiple-key generation (given this is your preference), would it be better to use a record-store per storage object or just a global KeyStore keeping all keys (i.e. using the URL identifier of abstract storage object as alias)? Master key. The use of a master key seems obvious. This key should be protected by user PIN (introduced only once) and would allow access to the rest of encryption keys (they would be encrypted by means of this master key). Changing the PIN would only require to reencrypt this key and not all the encrypted data. Where would you keep it taking into account that if this got lost all data would be no further accesible? What further considerations should I take into account? Platform cryptography support. Do SATSA-CRYPTO-enabled J2ME phones really take advantage of some dedicated hardware acceleration (or other advantage I have not foreseen) and would this approach be prefered (whenever possible) over just BouncyCastle implementation? For the same reason is RIM Cryptographic API worth the license cost over BouncyCastle? Any comments, critics, further considerations or different approaches are welcome.

  • Time with and without OpenMP

    - by was
    I have a question.. I tried to improve a well known program algorithm in C, FOX algorithm for matrix multiplication.. relative link without openMP: (http://web.mst.edu/~ercal/387/MPI/ppmpi_c/chap07/fox.c). The initial program had only MPI and I tried to insert openMP in the matrix multiplication method, in order to improve the time of computation: (This program runs in a cluster and computers have 2 cores, thus I created 2 threads.) The problem is that there is no difference of time, with and without openMP. I observed that using openMP sometimes, time is equivalent or greater than the time without openMP. I tried to multiply two 600x600 matrices. void Local_matrix_multiply( LOCAL_MATRIX_T* local_A /* in */, LOCAL_MATRIX_T* local_B /* in */, LOCAL_MATRIX_T* local_C /* out */) { int i, j, k; chunk = CHUNKSIZE; // 100 #pragma omp parallel shared(local_A, local_B, local_C, chunk, nthreads) private(i,j,k,tid) num_threads(2) { /* tid = omp_get_thread_num(); if(tid == 0){ nthreads = omp_get_num_threads(); printf("O Pollaplasiamos pinakwn ksekina me %d threads\n", nthreads); } printf("Thread %d use the matrix: \n", tid); */ #pragma omp for schedule(static, chunk) for (i = 0; i < Order(local_A); i++) for (j = 0; j < Order(local_A); j++) for (k = 0; k < Order(local_B); k++) Entry(local_C,i,j) = Entry(local_C,i,j) + Entry(local_A,i,k)*Entry(local_B,k,j); } //end pragma omp parallel } /* Local_matrix_multiply */

  • Scheduler with Asp Mvc

    - by Samuel
Hi, I want to use a Scheduler like Telerik Scheduler in my Mvc project. The problem is that the Scheduler is a Asp.Net WebForm control. For this reason, I must create a WebForm page in my Mvc project to put the Scheduler control. When I show the page, it work fine to render the layout of the control but if I try to interact with it; click for change date, change to day view to week view, the control don't change. I know that postback doesn't work in mvc project but does it work in a WebForm page in a Mvc project? If it doesn't work, it is the reason why when I try to interact with the control, the control don't respond. I think it's because the postback don't work and the Scheduler use 100 % Databinding where when I change date, the postback don't contain any data that I have changed and for this reason, the control can't change is layout. Have you any ideas about postback with WebForm in mvc project? What type of design can I adopt? (Two differents projets: One for my Scheduler with WebForm and another for all the rest of my website in Mvc project) Any other control easily to use with Scheduler? Tips and tricks when needing both WebForm control and Mvc control in Mvc project? Thank you very much.

  • ASP.NET MVC 4/Web API Single Page App for Mobile Devices ... Needs Authentication

    - by lmttag
We have developed an ASP.NET MVC 4/Web API single page, mobile website (also using jQuery Mobile) that is intended to be accessed only from mobile devices (e.g., iPads, iPhones, Android tables and phones, etc.), not desktop browsers. This mobile website will be hosted internally, like an intranet site. However, since we’re accessing it from mobile devices, we can’t use Windows authentication. We still need to know which user (and their role) is logging in to the mobile website app. We tried simply using ASP.NET’s forms authentication and membership provider, but couldn’t get it working exactly the way we wanted. What we need is for the user to be prompted for a user name and password only on the first time they access the site on their mobile device. After they enter a correct user name and password and have been authenticated once, each subsequent time they access the site they should just go right in. They shouldn’t have to re-enter their credentials (i.e., something needs to be saved locally to each device to identify the user after the first time). This is where we had troubles. Everything worked as expected the first time. That is, the user was prompted to enter a user name and password, and, after doing that, was authenticated and allowed into the site. The problem is every time after the browser was closed on the mobile device, the device and user were not know and the user had to re-enter user name and password. We tried lots of things too. We tried setting persistent cookies in JavaScript. No good. The cookies weren’t there to be read the second time. We tried manually setting persistent cookies from ASP.NET. No good. We, of course, used FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(model.UserName, true); as part of the form authentication framework. No good. We tried using HTML5 local storage. No good. No matter what we tried, if the user was on a mobile device, they would have to log in every single time. (Note: we’ve tried on an iPad and iPhone running both iOS 5.1 and 6.0, with Safari configure to allow cookies, and we’ve tried on Android 2.3.4.) Is there some trick to getting a scenario like this working? Or, do we have to write some sort of custom authentication mechanism? If so, how? And, what? Or, should we use something like claims-based authentication and WIF? Or??? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I have a Facebook app so users can login to my website using their Facebook account, but when you type my website name into Facebook's search (the search box right next to the Facebook logo) the app shows up in the search results. When I click it, it says "Misconfigured App - Sorry, the details for AppName cannot be displayed because the app is misconfigured." I want to remove my app from Facebook's search results, because it's not meant for users, but I can't figure out how to do it. Any ideas?

  • What is the best way to generate income from mobile games?

    - by Thomas
As the title states, what is the best way to get income from mobile games? (taking into consideration that creating the games only costs a lot of time and the games are relatively simple) As I see it, there are multiple ways of getting money from mobile games, Selling them for a fixed price (seems like a high threshold for potential buyers) In-game purchases (I can imagine this only works for several types of games, I don't see this working well for monopoly unless you like really fancy hotels ;) Ingame advertisements / sponsorships Which way will most likely bring the most profit?

  • Software to consolidate contacts from multiple sources?

    - by Neil
I'm looking for an app that can take my contacts from Gmail, Facebook, and my mobile phone, to come up with one consolidated address book that, for each contact, contains the name, email address, facebook username, and mobile number, and if possible, export this data to the Mac Address Book. Is there any app that can do this? Online or offline will do. Currently, I've been only able to find apps that need to be hosted on my own server, such as the ones below.
